Translations Process Work Initial Ideations

The starting point for this project was a poem that I could not read, but could see, feel, and translate visually. Initial “readings of the poem brought about feelings of nostalgia, warmth, and peace.

Translations Process Work Initial Ideations

Without much direction, only a feeling generated by the poem, the first round of translations emerged. These sketches played with motion and scale, and revealed feelings of secrecy, fragility, and comfort.

The sketches were scanned, vectorized, and printed on transparency paper. Then, using a light table, I collaged the transparencies over repurposed microslides and photo negatives. This technique allowed me to capture complex, high contrast and layered images that eventually led me to words such as: dream, memory, distant, foggy, and silent.

From these explorations, I developed a series of three posters that incorporated my photographs.

I developed a new set of posters based on this collaged transparency technique by creating a large, clear “poster” that I could layer on top of physical backgrounds. Posters

First, I traced the word “memory” onto a sheet of repurposed plastic using Posca paint pens, and then began photographing it in different environments using a tripod.

Finally, I digitally layered the photographs to create these composite posters.

The final product materialized as an interactive, informative pamphlet about global warming, incorporating my own photographs & posters, as well as transparent infographics with data sourced from NASA. I created handmade paper out of recycled shopping bags for the inside cover, and bound the book using repurposed string.

Family Crest Process Work Initial Ideations

Beginning with myself, and where I come from, the initial ideations and mind mapping explored my family, places I’ve lived, and symbols that are significant to my family and I. It’s important to note the influence that my great grandmother Rosamond had on my life, and consequently, this project.

Family Crest Process Work Initial Ideations

Inspired by my great grandmother Rosamond’s countless scrapbooks that she kept in her wooden chest, I designed a keepsake box of my own. Using the nouns I discovered in my mind mapping, I developed imagery that would later be translated by carving rubber stamps.

Stamp Carving

The designs were transferred using pencil onto 1x1 rubber carving blocks, and then carved and printed by hand using black ink.

Stamp Carving

Taking inspiration from my mood board, I sourced fabric from mens’ dress shirts at the thrift store, and used pages from scrapped books and magazines to print the stamps onto.

Family Crest Final 3D Project

I used a repurposed tin box, covered the lid with the stamped fabric, and filled it with small artifacts, folded maps, and lavender, just like the kind that my great grandmother had on her back porch. Final 3D Project

Mass Customization Process Work Initial Sketches

In the initial ideations, I wanted to explore window blinds that encorporated solar panels, automated opening & closing, and an accompanying app. After some research, I quickly realized blinds designed using this technology already exist, and are quite expensive.
