sowing the tropics in suburbia growing up, my mom would regularly try to grow tropical plants in our garden from food scraps we would discard. an avocado pit from a half-eaten avocado. a pineapple stem from our morning smoothie. a kalamansi from seeds she smuggled from back home. while the ‘normal’ white moms in our predominantly white suburb would grow (or at least pay latino gardeners to grow) roses and petunias, my mom would attempt to grow mangoes. I would always think she was so strange, this brown immigrant mother of mine, because each one of them would die, or at least remain permanently stunted and black from the cold. but each year she would still continue to plant them, water them, nurture them, as her mother, and her mother’s mother before her, taught her to do.
