“How can I describe the Kingdom of God? What story should I use to illustrate it? It is like a mustard seed planted in the ground. It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of all garden plants; it grows long branches, and birds can make nests in its shade.” – Jesus, Mark 4:30-32
WHAT DO WE MEAN when we talk about the Kingdom of God? It could be described as the Kingdom of which Jesus is King. It isn’t a physical place, it’s a state of being where all things happen exactly as God intended in his perfect plan. Speaking to a group of the religious people of his time, Jesus said, “The Kingdom of God can’t be detected by visible signs. You won’t be able to say, ‘Here it is!’ or ‘It’s over there!’” FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS ALREADY AMONG YOU (MATTHEW 17:20-21) He said that as he stood there... AMONG THEM. Other times he told people that the Kingdom was near them as he stood near there…NEAR THEM. With the arrival of the baby in the manger, the Kingdom of God came to earth in the person of Jesus, but the Kingdom was not present in its finished form – that’s where we come in.
THE APOSTLE PAUL told Christ followers in Philippi, “We are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives.” That’s right. Christ followers aren’t citizens of an earthly nation, they are citizens of the Kingdom of God, and what we do as Kingdom citizens makes a difference in this world. “Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ.” – Paul, Philippians 1:27
The “Good News is that JESUS CAME TO SET THINGS RIGHT the way they were before sin entered the world. Jesus came to restore our broken relationship with God. He came to give freedom to captives and joy to the sad. The Kingdom that Jesus brought, and that we continue to bring as his followers, is a Kingdom of restoration.
THAT’S WHERE MUSTARD SEEDS come in. Jesus didn’t expect us to turn things around in the world all at once; he just asked us to do the things that are right in front of us – small things with big potential. When we Christ followers do a good deed, say a kind word, or take an action as a representative of Jesus, we are helping to bring the Kingdom to earth. We are setting things right in the name of Jesus
SO LET’S GET STARTED. Ask God to show you where you can plant mustard seeds today, tomorrow and all week long. Then come back with your stories. Write them in your journal so you don’t forget, and share them with your spiritual friends. Plant your seeds and get ready to see some sprouts. The Kingdom is near, the Kingdom is among you!
