Where... WE KNOW EACH ONE OF OUR STUDENTS STUDENTS FIND A PLACE AT ST. MICHAEL’S CATHOLIC ACADEMY One of the hallmarks of St. Michael’s is that our student body is as diverse as our program. And that is something to celebrate. Here, students can have the high school experience that will carry them forward personally, intellectually and spiritually. High school is a time for growth, a time to discover talents and passions, and a time to become a person who is confident and equipped for challenge and opportunity. What does a St. Michael’s student look like? There is no prototypical St. Michael’s student, but our students do share certain characteristics: they are respectful, curious and engaged. They are seekers and achievers - whether that’s on the stage, the playing field or in the science lab. What all of our students have in common is a desire to succeed. And what they find at St. Michael’s is a dedicated, top-notch faculty and college counseling staff ready to help every step of the way.

Your high school home might just be at 3000 Barton Creek Boulevard.

"We have so many great traditions and so much school spirit here. I'm happy to call St. Michael's my second home. " Danielle Escutia, '18

ACADEMICS

A

St. Michael's education encompasses critical thinking, analysis and collaboration, intentionally integrated in real world contexts, fostering the development of these skills and competencies for college, career and life. Our academic program is leading edge, second to none and designed with flexibility and a responsive curriculum for a changing academic landscape. Our highly skilled, enthusiastic teachers provide the structure and framework necessary for growth and advancement, while incorporating interesting and thought-provoking activities to help students realize the value and importance of the work they are doing. Students acquire a solid foundation in the academic core of English, Mathematics, Science, Theology, Foreign Language, and Social Sciences. Our STEM program provides a firm foundation of knowledge and competency for students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, while introducing opportunities and cultivating passions. Leading edge courses, such as Robotics, Environmental Science and 3D Modeling, are offered.

While at St. Michael’s, I have taught intelligent, inquisitive and creative young scientists who I know will positively impact our community - and perhaps our planet. I am surrounded here by great kids and wonderful peers. ~ Dr. Dennis Sheeter, AP Chemistry

An appreciation for Fine Arts and proficiency in Computer Science and Public Speaking are fostered. Students are encouraged to pursue individual interests through courses offered as electives. Honors and AP courses are designed to meet the needs of students who want to explore principles and concepts in greater depth St. Michael’s Catholic Academy is accredited by SACS/AdvancED and the Texas Catholic Conference. ATHLETICS

FINE ARTS

St. Michael’s competes at the highest level of private school athletics. As a TAPPS 5A school in sports, we go up against the many competitive teams in Texas—and regularly bring home team trophies and individual district and state honors.

The Fine Arts program seeks to enhance aesthetic perception and appreciation in students and create enjoyment in the wider community. We guide students in the mastery of technique, a process that leads to fulfillment and intrinsic esteem. We offer study and criticism of the arts to enlighten students and sharpen their analytical skills. We expose students to the arts as a way to broaden their experience of the world and instill appreciation for both great masters and emerging artists.

In the past two school years alone, our athletes have captured eight TAPPS State Championships in swim, track and field, volleyball, and in back-to-back tennis and cross country, wins. St. Michael’s offers 13 sports for both men and women.

Our Parent Association supports three main ideas: • Build community

PARENTS ARE PARTNERS AND VITAL COMMUNITY RELATIONS BUILDERS

• Invite and involve our parents in the mission and life of the school • Ensure that every student’s interest is supported and equally valued

(ST. MICHAEL’S IS YOUR HOME, TOO) If you were to ask anyone about what is so special at St. Michael's, at the top of the list would be community. As an alumna, I received an amazing education here. As a parent, there is a wide variety of activities; whatever your children are interested in, they will be able to find it at St. Michael's. Carolyn DeRoeck, Class of '93 and Current Parent

So many ways for parents and guardians to be involved at St. Michael's!

We strongly encourage all parents to join in supporting St. Michael's through multiple and meaningful volunteer opportunities. You will not only support the school but, more importantly, build stronger community bonds. St. Michael's does not require team fees or a “pay-to-participate” system, which almost all other private and many public schools require for athletic teams and other clubs.

Ideas... STUDENTS EXPERIENCE UNIQUE PROGRAMS AND LIFE-CHANGING OPPORTUNITIES

WINTER TERM St. Michael's was the first and is still the only college preparatory school in Austin to institute a Winter Term of specialized study. At St. Michael's, we believe that foreign exchange programs, international study, working internships, immersive and experiential coursework, and service have lifechanging potential. Winter Term is a unique academic, cultural, service, travel, and language immersion program now in its second year.

Ideas... WINTER TERM

The three-week Winter Term immediately follows the Christmas break. Students have the opportunity to participate in internships, mini-courses, or foreign travel for foreign language, cultural immersion, and service opportunities.

class. At first, I was anxious, anticipating wild animals

International trips have included exchange programs at sister schools Sainte Agnés in France and Highlands el Encinar in Madrid, as well as cultural immersion trips to Thailand and Italy. Service trips to India, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua have been transformative experiences for students.

Internships during Winter Term have represented a myriad of organizations and activities. From testing exercise physiology equipment at NASA to assisting veterinarians, learning how to run a fashion boutique, and seeing local government agencies and courtrooms at work, students benefitted from real world experience.

From dozens of popular choices, students have learned how to fly a drone, how data travels in cyberspace, and how to analyze various economic sectors to make predictions about stock market prices. Students recorded their own songs in our state-of-the-art recording studio, performed improv, and changed a tire. They were encouraged to try something new and different, to form new relationships and discover more interests.

Austin Ornithology Winter Term Mini-Course Students are introduced not only to a new hobby but to the biology, conservation and identification of bird species found in Central Texas during the winter.

Ideas... FLEX BLOCK ADVISORY Flex Block is one class period a day during which students choose their own activities, which may be individual meetings with teachers, study and homework sessions, Writing Center, guest speaker seminars, or connecting with friends. Mass and Advisory meetings also take place on certain days during Flex Block.

Within our Advisory Program we mentor students by providing academic, social and emotional support. The goal is to create a forum that gives each student a uniquely designed support system together with, and apart from, their peers. Advisory group meetings also provide the opportunity to educate students on certain topics, such as how to improve time management, goal-setting and organizational skills.

The Freshman Seminar is designed to start all freshmen on the road to academic and personal success at St. Michael’s during their four-year high school careers. Students complete a five-part seminar on time management and study strategies, and may also participate in specialized strategic learning classes for courses such as Biology and Math.

St. Michael’s is reimagining the role of education and creating an innovative and flexible program that embraces change. Students learn across disciplines and across oceans, seek what is possible, and participate in active learning.

or over 30 years, the Henderson Cup has been awarded annually by the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools to a single institution for excellence in Academics, Athletics and Fine Arts in each of six classifications.

Consecutive Academic Championships combined with consecutive Henderson Cup wins are unheard of. Our students, especially, but also our families, faculty, coaches, and staff deserve all the credit for making St. Michael’s the tremendous success it is today. The Henderson Cup win is just one example of the great things going on at the school. ~ Donald Figer, Chair of the Board of Trustees

Ultimately, students are challenged to find the place where interests and passions intersect with talents and gifts.
