The former prison of the Medieval city of Naumburg is located in a plot that today establishes an interruption to an axiality present between the civil and bishop towns and reinforced by the city gates. On the new proposed masterplan, the axis is continued while a new dynamic is developed to receive a new theatre to the city. The Royal Court building is kept as the main access and its position, scale and style are respected minimizing the constrast on the new volumes and enhancing its hierarchy with the landscape. The maintained buildings are the ones originally part of the complex, that dates back from 1855, and the posterior additions were removed.


The use of the undergrounds as an inhabited space is proposed in order to house the auditoriums, technical and workspaces without major impact with the overground landscape. The points of contact between the overground and underground surfaces are explored using tunnels, vertical elements and visual connections to allow that both achieve a great quality of space. The theatre components are designed to bring the audience close to the cast and production, creating awareness of the acting universe and the main elements of the stage, the apron and proscenium, are shaped to be the defined focus point in contrast with the organicity and fluidity of the surrounding walls.

reActivate ScaliMilano Scalo Farini, Milan, Italy

Landscape and Public Space Design | Collaboration: Gasymbeyli, N; Haoyue, Y; Huilan, D; Millet, G; Zohadi, N Scalo Farini was studied as a model to propose an strategy towards all the abandoned railways in the city of Milan. A connection was missing between the Scali, but also within the city. Adding up the notion of the outer green belt, the main concept of transporting the green from the external to the inner Milano was stablished. The proposal is a hybrid multifunctional space that present a program with a variety of ambiences demonstrating the potentialities and vibrancy of the site. The bridges, paths and street connect and integrate the multiple spaces attracting the closer communities to occupy and appropriate the space, bringing their identities to the park. The green, permeates the city fabric attracting new users to a more lively and vibrant space. Office+Labs for Novartis Basel, Switzerland

The new building complex plays the role of attracting the Novartis community to enjoy the open space of its central garden, surrounded by commercial facilities and aligned with the axis that leads to the Rheine River promenade, giving the possibility of experiencing a sequence of outer spaces. The garden works as a connector in two different scales, as part of the network of the urban structure, and as the central piece for the three buildings. The buildings have their main access from the garden and the functions distributed around its cores. reaching different levels of privacy. The cores communicate along the lower and more public levels to the upper offices and lab uses. The three buildings can be seen as a single object, having their undergrounds connected, with public use, and its formal and structural similarities but with three different programs and dynamics providing working space for the Novartix mix and a new identity.

Parco di Calimali Fagnano Olona, Italy

Construction Studio | Collaboration: Oner, E The cultural park is located in a post-industrial area between industrial buildings and the preserved natural Medio Olona Park. The proposal includes individual modules placed around the existing purification tank building from the previous use of the site. A set of new buildings give support to the activites that are realized by the community members in the area today providing an openable theatre for 180 spectators, a library, study/research rooms, rehearsal room, cenography workshops and commercial spaces. The brick modules are distributed along the site taking advantage of the natural landscape in collective composition allowing recreational and relaxing areas for the users to occupy and gather around the space.

Farmer’s Market Back of the Yards, Chicago, USA

CBD Studio | Collaboration: Fallico, C; Goicoechea, C; Smith, K The urban farm will act as a commercial facility for organic fruits and vegetables, gardens for private 1 Transverse Section cultivation, a greenhouse, an educational agriculture centre, and a farmer’s market. The project 2 Longitudinal Section 3 Street level utilises an abandoned railway as its site which allows the implemented farm land.

Overall, the projects aims to increase the quality of life, create a new identity for the neighborhood, and to bring the local community, as well as all of Chicago, around to the notion of urban farming being a beneficial activity.

The colonial style residence was redesign to house three apartment units to attend the local demand for student hous- 1 Street level ing options. The owner has used the building as a dentistry office and rented for residential use before and opted for a 2 Upper level renovation that allowed to rent for a different profile of user. The project was design attending the city parameters and mantained the façade simmetry, style and height to harmonize the residence aesthetics with the other buildings in the same block.

Residential Renovation in Belo Horizonte, Brazil

The apartment renovation focused on an affordable sollution to attend the owners demand for a minimalist decoration in a new home much smaller than their previous one. A second existent bedroom was adapted to an office combined with a closet providing extra wardrobe space. To compliment the choice for clear colours in the furniture and walls the design present colourful and textured objects in strategic points. 2

Republic’s Museum

Practice at Gortec Engenharia e Arquitetura

The presented work is part of the restoration and intervention project of Rio de Janeiro’s Museu da República (Republic’s Museum) - the Catete’s Palace. The project resulted from the action of the Historical Cities Preservation Program of IPHAN (National Institute for the Historical and Arstistical Heritage). Catete’s Palace has neoclassical architecture with a granite façade and marble portals. Designed in 1858 for the Nova Friburgo’s Baron residence, located in the country’s capital (at that time). Since 1970, the building houses the Republic’s Museum which includes a Library, Bar, Shop, and an outstanding garden. However the biggest attraction is the Palace itself.

The Palace acted as the Brazilian government’s executive branch headquarters from 1897 to 1960, until it transferred to Brasília. The site also played host to a number of historic events that defined Brazil’s history, namely the decisions regarding the two world wars, and the suicide of president Getulio Vargas. It was an accurate production that combined site visits, photos, hand drawings, 3D models and photogrammetry resulting in sections, façades, floor plans, details of the ceilings, roof, façades, sculptures and framming. 4 Street level ceiling detail 5 Second level ceiling detail

The summer residence needed restoration, the weather exposure left parts of its structure compromissed demanding a damage diagnosis. The owner also aimed to expand the house design adding a third floor to get a nice lake view and consequently changing the roof. Other parts of the proposal included an outside leisure area with a swimming pool and a spa, a lounge for barbecue and a renovation of the garage adding a guest room and green roofs as required. Other complementary projects included elements on the façade and entrance.
