MONTEVIDEO La capital política y ciudad más poblada del Uruguay es también la sede del Mercosur y de la ALADI, con más de un millón trescientos mil habitantes.

The political capital and the most populated city of Uruguay is also the headquarters for the MERCOSUR and for the ALADI, with over a million and three hundred thousand inhabitants.

El 22 de noviembre de 1723 el maestre de campo portugués Manuel de Freytas Fonseca fundó el fuerte de Montevieu. Algunos meses después, el 22 de enero de 1724, una expedición española proveniente de Buenos Aires, organizada por el gobernador de esa ciudad, el español Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, obligó a los portugueses a abandonar el lugar. Así los españoles comenzaron a poblar la nueva ciudad, inicialmente con familias provenientes de Buenos Aires, y luego con familias originarias de las Islas Canarias. En diciembre del mismo año se confecciona un padrón de habitantes y luego se traza un plano delineatorio y se la designa como San Felipe y Santiago de Montevideo, nombre que luego es abreviado tal como se conoce hoy, a casi 300 años de su fundación.

On November 22nd, 1723 Portuguese Field Marshal Manuel Freytas Fonseca founded the Fort of Montevieu. Some months later, on the January 22, 1724, an expedition Spanish from Buenos Aires organized by the Governor of that city, the Spanish Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, forced the Portuguese to leave the place. Thus the Spaniards began to populate the new city initially with families coming from Buenos Aires and then with families originating in the Canary Islands. In December of the same year a register of inhabitants is made and then a limit extension map is created and the city is named as “San Felipe y Santiago de Montevideo” name which was then abbreviated as it is known today, nearly 300 years from its foundation.

Its port was considered as the most important one of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata and as the axis of the growth of the city and the country.

La capital política de Uruguay y sede administrativa del Mercosur, es una ciudad amable, de escala humana, y como dice su Intendenta “intensamente arbolada, con un árbol cada tres habitantes”, los que se distribuyen entre las calles y más de 1.000 plazas y plazoletas, construidas alrededor de los espacios públicos.

The political capital of Uruguay and the administrative headquarters of the Mercosur is a friendly city, of human scale, and as the Mayor says “intensely wooded with a tree every three inhabitants”, which are distributed among the streets and more than 1,000 plazas and squares built around public spaces.

De estos espacios públicos, articuladores cotidianos de la vida en sociedad, la Intendenta remarca muy especialmente a la rambla costanera como “…la democracia hecha espacio público”, al punto de ser su paseo más representativo y popular.

The positioning of the city in quality of life has been highlighted by various publications such as America Economy that places it as the least congested of Latin America; Financial Times identifies it as one of the 10 most attractive Latin American cities for foreign investment, or the Inter-American Development Bank that puts it as a model in promoting policies of State beyond electoral cycles. Another of the highlights that naturally arises in the talk is the Ciudad Vieja, that peninsula impregnated with the port that gave rise to the city that invites to its pedestrian tours and to discover the intimate history of the city that flows in its bookstores, bars and theatres.

En ese recorrido, desde el Mercado del Puerto hasta el Cabildo de la Plaza Matriz, numerosos museos y galerías se presentan a nuestro paso, entre las que se puede destacar el Museo del Carnaval, el MAPI (Museo de Arte Precolombino e Indígena), el Torres García o el de la Migraciones, entre los que se puede hacer una pausa para un café o degustar alguno de los platos de la rica y variada gastronomía local.

El Mercado Agrícola, remodelado en su aniversario número 100, es otro paseo ineludible de la ciudad, junto a las ferias vecinales, de las que se destaca la popular de Tristán Narvaja, verdadera fiesta comercial callejera de los días domingos. En lo que se refiere a la oferta hotelera, la Intendenta destaca que “ha mejorado sensiblemente, tanto en calidad como en cantidad. Montevideo tiene más alternativas para los visitantes y mantiene en construcción nuevos hoteles. La reinauguración del Hotel Carrasco, una joya recuperada para el patrimonio activo de la ciudad, es símbolo de esta etapa. The “Mercado Agricola”, remodeled on its 100th anniversary is another of the inescapable tours of the city together with the local street markets, with Tristan Narvaja being the most popular one; a truly commercial street festivity on Sundays. In what it refers to hotel offers, the Mayor emphasizes “it has improved significantly, both in quality and quantity. Montevideo has more options for visitors and is developing new hotels. The re-opening of the Carrasco Hotel, a jewel recovered for the active patrimony of the city, is a symbol of this stage. We are the main touristic destination in the country and we must boost the permanent renovation and improve our service for those who want to come and enjoy”.

Al finalizar, la Intendenta nos dice que: “La ciudad es construcción permanente” y que conscientes de esa responsabilidad es que se gestionan los desafíos de la vida cotidiana, proyectada al futuro para el disfrute de las generaciones venideras y de todos los turistas que nos visitan.

In the end, the Mayor tells us: “The city is always under construction” and being aware of that responsibility the challenges of everyday life are managed, projecting it to the future for the enjoyment of generations to come and of all the tourists that visit us.

Grutas del Palacio Un puente entre la naturaleza y la ciencia En el Departamento de Flores, Uruguay tiene su primer Geoparque, el segundo en AmĂŠrica Latina, y que integra la Red Global de Geoparques.

Grutas del Palacio A bridge between nature and science In the Flores Department, Uruguay has its first Geopark, the second in Latin America and which integrates the Geoparks Global Network.

Localizado en el sitio conocido como Rincón del Palacio, en el Paraje Marincho sobre el kilómetro 236 de la Ruta 3 se encuentran las Grutas del Palacio. Se trata de una formación que ha sido fruto de la erosión hídrica, compuesta por una coraza o techo de 70 centímetros de espesor y una serie de columnas de unos dos metros de altura que la sustentan.

Located in the place known as “Rincón del Palacio”, in “Paraje Marincho” on Route 3, km 236, the Grutas del Palacio can be found. It’s a formation that has been the result of water erosion, composed of a shell or ceiling 70 centimetres thick and a series of columns of about two meters of height underpinning it.

Compuestas por areniscas ferrificadas de color rojo ladrillo, resistieron a procesos erosivos desde hace miles de años.

Composed by red sandstones that resisted erosion for thousands of years.

Primero se creyó que fueron construidas por los indígenas que habitaban la zona, luego que las columnas eran troncos petrificados en el pasado geológico, pero recientes estudios señalan que las columnas reflejan el lugar donde se localizaron las raíces de antiguos árboles.

First it was believed that they were built by the natives who inhabited the area, then that the columns were trunks petrified in the geological past, but recent studies indicate that the columns reflect the place where the roots of ancient trees were located.

La presencia de huevos de dinosaurios en esa unidad geológica permitieron conocer que la sedimentación de las arenas de la zona ocurrió hace 70 millones de años (período Cretácico). Además de estas particulares formaciones, el Departamento de Flores ofrece una amplia y diversa propuesta turística que incluye áreas protegidas como la Localidad Rupestre Chamangá, reservas de flora y fauna como la Dr. Rodolfo Tálice, estancias y hotelería, gastronomía y lugares para realizar deportes acuáticos, senderismo, etc.

The presence of dinosaur eggs in this geological unit allowed to know that the sands sedimentation of the area took place 70 million years ago (Cretaceous period). In addition to these particular formations, Flores Department offers a wide and diverse tourist offer that includes protected areas such as the “Localidad Rupestre de Chamanga”, reserves of flora and fauna as the Dr. Rodolfo Tálice, ranches and hospitality, cuisine and locations for water sports, hiking, etc.

Florida Department located in the South Center of Uruguay, with its capital located 98 kilometers from Montevideo, was born as an urban location in 1760 under the name of Fortin de Pintado.

Florida departamento ubicado en el centro sur de Uruguay, con su capital situada a 98 kil贸metros de Montevideo, naci贸 como un emplazamiento urbano en 1760 bajo el nombre de Fort铆n de Pintado.

Este lugar ha sido testigo activo de la revolución independentista, en especial en el período posterior al desembarco del grupo de patriotas encabezados por el General Juan Antonio Lavalleja que se abrieran paso desde su exilio en Argentina el 19 de abril de 1825.

This place has been an active witness of the pro-independence revolution, especially in the aftermath of the disembarkation of the group of patriots led by General Juan Antonio Lavalleja arriving from his exile in Argentina on April 19, 1825.

Allí, en Florida, en la Piedra Alta se vivió la declaratoria de la independencia uruguaya, y aún hoy podemos verla a orillas del río Santa Lucía Chico.

There, in Florida, in Piedra Alta, the declaration of the Uruguayan independence was filled, and even today we can see it in the Santa Lucía Chico river banks.

Pero destacados hechos históricos en esta zona privilegiada vienen desde mucho antes, en tiempos de los Jesuitas que conformaron estancias de gran incidencia en la región. Entre ellas Calera de las huérfanas y la Calera, dos de las Estancias Jesuíticas más importantes y emblemáticas del proyecto de desarrollo más audaz de los siglos XVII y XVIII.

But notable historical facts in this privileged area come from much earlier, in times when the Jesuits formed communities of high incidence in the region. Among them the “Calera de las Huerfanas” and “La Calera”, two of the most important and emblematic Jesuit establishments of the project of bolder development of the 17th and 18th centuries.

La “Estancia La Calera” fue hacia el siglo XVII la hacienda más importante de la Banda Oriental. Es conocida como la Estancia de los Jesuitas, por haber sido otorgada a la Compañía de Jesús por el Cabildo de Montevideo en 1745, y fue allí donde desarrollaron la primera y mayor agroindustria de la zona en esos tiempos, y en ambos márgenes del Río Negro instalaron establecimientos modelo. Son las primeras estancias de explotación ganadera y de elaboración de cal, usando los hornos para la fabricación de ladrillos, tejuelas y tejas. El actual casco, declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional en 1997, está en procesos de restauración, y hoy nuevamente en manos de la Compañía de Jesús, ha sido un lugar de referencia de la experiencia de los Jesuitas en la Banda Oriental. Recorrer este legado es solo uno de los recorridos turísticos que Florida ofrece al visitante, siguiendo el circuito denominado “Paseo Ruta 5 Sentidos”.

The “Estancia La Calera” was toward the 17th century the most important establishment in the “Banda Oriental” (Uruguayan territory). It is known as the “Estancia de los Jesuitas” by having been granted to the Jesuits by the authorities of Montevideo in 1745, and it was there where they developed the first and largest agricultural industry in the area at that time, and on both banks of the Rio Negro they installed model establishments. They are the first cattle and lime processing ranches, using the ovens for the manufacture of bricks, small and big tiles. The present town, declared a National Historic Monument in 1997, is in the process of restoration and today is in the hands of the Society of Jesus again. It has been a place of reference for the experience of the Jesuits in the “Banda Oriental”. Strolling through this legacy is just one of the tours that Florida offers to the visitor, following the circuit called “Route 5 Senses Tour”.

EL CEIBO RANCH

Es un establecimiento que data de 1849, ubicado a 16 kilómetros de la capital del Departamento, donde es posible compartir el estilo de vida del campo, rodeado de un agradable entorno donde habitan una amplia variedad de aves en un espeso monte natural de gran riqueza forestal. Espejos de agua y cascadas naturales completan este paisaje que invita a ser recorrido.

It is a settlement that dates from 1849, located 16 kilometers from the capital of the Department, where it is possible to share the lifestyle of the countryside surrounded by a pleasant environment inhabited by a wide variety of birds in thick natural woods of great forest wealth. Water mirrors and natural waterfalls complete this landscape that invites to be routed.

Hospedarse en El Ceibo es trasladarse a la vida de una estancia del siglo XIX, disfrutar de la comida casera, la huerta, los amplios dormitorios, los galpones y patio protegido por una glicina que ya cumplió 150 años, con las comodidades del presente, respetando la majestuosidad de lo antiguo.

Fue una de las primeras y más importantes estancias del Uruguay, fundado en 1854 por Pedro José Jackson, fue declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional en 1997. El gran casco colonial español conserva las características de la época, donde se aprecian detalles que recuerdan la historia de la estancia, con su iglesia, patio decorado con mayólicas y el portal de hierro forjado con el escudo de la estancia.

PANAMÁ VIEJO es el nombre con el que se conoce el actual sitio arqueológico donde se fundara la ciudad y permaneciera allí hasta un ataque del pirata inglés Henry Morgan.

OLD PANAMA is the name with which the present archaeological site is known and it is where the city was founded and remained there until an attack of the English pirate Henry Morgan.

Anteriormente había sido asediada en varias oportunidades por piratas, sufrido incendios y un terremoto, pero en 1671, luego de un mes de invadida por Morgan, los propios españoles hicieron volar los depósitos de pólvora como forma de terminar con los saqueos.

It had previously been besieged several times by pirates, suffered from fire and an earthquake but in 1671, after a month of being invaded by Morgan, the Spaniards themselves blew away the deposits of gunpowder as a way to put an end to the lootings.

Visitar las ruinas de la ciudad es un recorrido obligado, en el que se pueden observar los siete conventos, el hospital San Juan de Dios, la Catedral que conserva su torre y otras estructuras no identificadas.

EL CASCO ANTIGUO es el nombre que recibe el sitio donde se trasladó y volvió a fundar Panamá en 1673. Trazada en forma reticular hacia los cuatro puntos cardinales y de forma octogonal, destaca por sus barrios de calles estrechas, edificios con balconadas de hierro cubiertas de flores, murallas y baluartes, e importantes puntos de interés como la iglesia de La Merced, la de San José con su altar tallado en madera y la Catedral Metropolitana con sus dos torres gemelas.

EL CASCO ANTIGUO is the name given to the site where Panama was moved and founded again in 1673. Drawn in a reticular form towards the four cardinal points and octagonal in shape, it stands out for its neighborhoods of narrow streets, its buildings with iron balconies covered with flowers, its walls and bastions and the important points of interest such as the Church of “La Merced”, the San José church with its carved wooden altar and the Metropolitan Cathedral with its twin towers.

Un MUSEO en movimiento

Localizado en el casco antiguo de Montevideo, donde convive con construcciones modernas y edificios históricos de valor patrimonial, el MAPI – Museo de Arte Precolombino e Indígena– recibe a los visitantes en una construcción de fines del siglo XIX.

A Museum in motion Located in the old town of Montevideo where it co-exists with modern and historic buildings of heritage value, the MAPI - Museum of pre-Columbian and indigenous art receives visitors in an end of the 19th century building.

Desde setiembre de 2004 el MAPI abre sus puertas a visitantes de todo el mundo, instalado en un edificio que fuera declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional en 1986 y que fuera proyectado originalmente como un establecimiento Médico HidroTermo- Terápico, de dimensiones monumentales y en correspondencia a la moda europea de la época. Constituyó uno de los grandes proyectos de español Emilio Reus en el Río de la Plata, que quedó trunco por la quiebra del financista español.

Since September 2004 the MAPI opens its doors to visitors from around the world, installed in a building that was declared a national historic landmark in 1986 which was designed originally as a doctor hydro-thermotherapist establishment of monumental dimensions and in correspondence to the European fashion of the time. It was one of the major projects of Spanish Emilio Reus in the Río de la Plata, which was cut short due to the bankrupt of the Spanish financier.

CURIOSIDADES

Ya como propiedad del estado albergó los Bancos Nacional e Italiano y por años al Ministerio de Defensa Nacional, siendo clausurado debido a su deterioro al finalizar la última dictadura militar en Uruguay y permaneciendo cerrado por más de una década, pasando luego al ámbito municipal.

As a State-owned property it housed the Italian and National banks and for years the Ministry of National Defense, to be closed due to its deterioration at the end of the last military dictatorship in Uruguay and remaining closed for more than one decade being passed eventually to municipal control.

En convenio con la Intendencia de Montevideo, uno de los gobiernos de Canarias decidió invertir en su reciclaje. Luego de desistir y alejarse del proyecto, la Intendencia resuelve continuar con los trabajos de restauración, y mediante un convenio con coleccionistas privados se crea el MAPI, aunando objetivos comunes entre agentes privados y públicos.

In agreement with the municipality of Montevideo, one of the Canary Islands Government decided to invest in its recycling. Pero toda esta tarea trasciende las fronteras del museo tradicional, y esta temporada de verano ha llevado adelante una actividad denominada “El MAPI va a la playa”, que consistió entre otras cosas con talleres de arqueología en la arena en la que los niños participantes tuvieron la posibilidad de convertirse en arqueólogos por un día, en una actividad que combina conocimiento con juego, en una actividad que buscaba educar en la preservación del patrimonio cultural. El MAPI tiene amplia experiencia en el trabajo con niños, a través de los cursos y visitas guiadas que realiza, pero con esta novedosa experiencia, acercó el Museo al lugar donde estaba el público.

Toyota FCV-R Concept La CES 2014 no fue solo espacio de presentación de nuevos televisores y smartwatches, fue también un lugar donde la industria automotriz presentó sus avances e innovaciones de cara al futuro. La vid es una planta que prefiere un entorno seco y por tanto el exceso de agua la afecta, sobre todo al culminar la maduraci贸n, porque proliferan los hongos que atacan la uva.

Vintage 2014 A real challenge El clima en Uruguay trajo lluvias abundantes sobre fines de enero y principios de febrero, complicando la vendimia de este aĂąo. No fue generalizado en todo el paĂs, ni todas las variedades se vieron afectadas de la misma manera.

The climate in Uruguay brought rains of late January and early February, complicating this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s harvest. It was not widespread throughout the country, not all varieties were affected in the same way.

The grapevine is a plant that prefers a dry environment and therefore excess water affects it, especially at the end of the ripening, because of proliferating fungi that attack the grape.

GASTRONOMIA

En el norte por ejemplo se cosecha varias semanas antes, por lo que la calidad obtenida fue satisfactoria, en cambio al sur del Río Negro, los viñedos soportaron 10 días lluviosos que deterioraron la uva no recolectada. 68

Cuando el agua abunda, las plantas la absorben y las uvas se hinchan tanto que la cáscara se raja y la botrytis gris (hongo que ataca la uva) comienza a destruirlas. Aún en los casos en que no se da tal extremo, la fruta sufre una dilución del azúcar, lo que se traducirá en un menor grado alcohólico del vino, además de menor color y sabor. Uruguay se encuentra ubicado en una zona ideal para el cultivo de la vid, en la misma latitud que las principales regiones de Chile y Argentina, pero la diferencia sustancial radica en que ellos deben irrigar por la sequedad de sus veranos, en cambio los nuestros suelen ser lluviosos, con sus consiguientes complicaciones. Si bien la situación es complicada, los productores no dramatizan y tienen esperanzas. El Ing. Ricardo Varela de Viña Varela Zarranz afirma que “En estas circunstancias es cuando se aprecia la importancia de los trabajos preventivos en el viñedo: desbrotes, raleos, desalados, deshojes, tratamientos sanitarios. Algunos que favorecen el desarrollo de la planta y otros que previenen los efectos negativos de las lluvias”.

En la antigüedad, la cultura agrícola del Medio Oriente se asentaba sobre tres pilares: los cereales, el olivo y la vid. Cada uno de estos cultivos aportaba un alimento básico a aquellas poblaciones primitivas. En particular el olivo era venerado y considerado un árbol inmortal, por su gran longevidad, que le permite vivir más de un siglo. Con sus ramas se tejía una corona, usada como galardón en las primitivas Olimpíadas de Grecia. Hoy, la bandera de las Naciones Unidas ostenta una corona de olivo que abraza el mapamundi, como signo y deseo de paz mundial.

In antiquity, the agricultural culture of the Middle East was based on three pillars: cereals, olive trees and vines. Each of these crops brought a staple to those primitive towns. In particular the olive tree was revered and considered an immortal tree for its great longevity, which allows it to live more than one century. With its branches a crown was weaved and used as a prize in the primitive Olympics in Greece. Es esencial evitar las alteraciones térmicas y extraerlo solo por métodos mecánicos o físicos. Esto explica el motivo por el que muchas etiquetas subrayan el prensado en frío. Cuidar cada etapa del procesamiento define la calidad.

For oil to be classified as Extra Virgin, it must pass two controls. On one hand the laboratory checks a number of parameters, including acidity, which must be less than 0.8%. The other control is the organoleptic, a tasting panel must classify it as such, with a rating among all the tasters of zero defect and another ratina for excellent fruity taste and smell. On the other hand the Virgin, also of high quality, supports an acidity of 2%, a defect rating of zero to three and a half and a positive fruity rating. During the past decades, the medical community has confirmed with certainty what was already known in an empirical manner by ancient civilizations. Olive oil is rich in vitamin E and other antioxidants. It helps prevent arterial sclerosis, to protect the brain from ageing and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease among other benefits.

Por ejemplo las aceitunas no deben tocar el suelo al momento de cosecharlas para evitar toda contaminación. Para que el aceite sea catalogado como Virgen Extra debe pasar dos controles. Por un lado en laboratorio se comprueba una serie de parámetros, entre ellos la acidez, que debe ser menor a 0,8%. El otro control es el organoléptico, un panel de cata debe catalogarlo como tal, con una calificación entre todos los catadores de cero defecto y otra de excelente frutado en olor y sabor. En cambio el Virgen, también de gran calidad, admite una acidez de 2%, una calificación de defecto de cero a tres y medio y un frutado positivo. Durante los últimos decenios, la comunidad médica ha confirmado con certeza lo que ya era conocido de manera empírica por las civilizaciones antiguas. El aceite de oliva es rico en vitamina E y en otros antioxidantes. Ayuda a prevenir la esclerosis arterial, a proteger el cerebro del envejecimiento y reduce el riesgo de enfermedades cardiovasculares ente otras. En Uruguay se ha dado recientemente un fenómeno muy dinámico y sorprendente en torno a la producción de aceite de oliva. En la última década se plantaron miles de hectáreas de olivos y se instalaron modernas almazaras o plantas de procesamiento. Este extraordinario desarrollo surgió del aumento de la demanda mundial, cada vez más convencida de las propiedades saludables de este aceite. El manejo artesanal de la cosecha y el cuidadoso procesamiento de las olivas, permite dar en nuestro país aceites Extra Virgen de gran calidad, que ya han ganado medallas en concursos inter-nacionales.

El Corsario Deslumbrante inicio de temporada El Ballet Nacional del Sodre comenzó su temporada en la sala mayor del Auditorio Adela Reta, con la presentación de El Corsario, inaugurando la quinta temporada bajo la dirección de Julio Bocca.

The National Ballet of the Sodre began its season in the Hall of the Adela Reta Auditorium, with the presentation of “The Corsair”, inaugurating the fifth season under the direction of Julio Bocca.

Esta aventura de piratas, corsarios, esclavos y harenes de bellas mujeres cautivas, fue presentada con gran despliegue artístico y un deslumbrante desempeño, tanto de la pareja compuesta por María Noel Riccetto y Ciro Tamayo, como del bailarín Acaoa Theóphilo, quienes conformaron un espectáculo muy bien recibido por el público.

This adventure of pirates, Corsairs, slaves and harems of beautiful captive women was presented with great artistic display and a dazzling performance of both the couple composed by María Noel Riccetto and Ciro Tamayo as well as the dancer Acaoa Theóphilo who formed a spectacle very well received by the public.

Tanto las primeras figuras como todos los integrantes del cuerpo de baile brindaron un espectáculo vibrante que colmó de sensaciones a los espectadores, más allá de los rubros de escenografía, vestuario e iluminación, íntegramente de producción local, sustituyendo así a decorados llegados del exterior que fueran utilizados en otras obras.

Both the main artists as well as all of the members of the crew gave a vibrant show that filled viewers with emotion. Besides all of the sets, costumes and lighting were of local production, thus substituting the decorations brought from abroad that were used in other works.
