OPEN OR EXPAND YOUR BUSINESS IN CANADA ABRE O EXPANDE TU NEGOCIO EN CANADÁ English On April 21, 2022, the event “Conectando Canadá - La Ruta de Expansión” was held in Bogotá, Colombia, with organizations such as the Canadian Embassy in Colombia, the Colombian-Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Toronto Business Accelerator, Latam StartUp, among others. Experts on immigration, entrepreneurship and business expansion shared their knowledge with entrepreneurs and business owners interested in expanding or creating their businesses in Canada. During the event, attendees were able to access complete information on adapting their business to the market with the topics: Business Migration and Relocation and Business Establishment.
Andrés Rey is an economist from the University of Rosario (Colombia) with a Master’s degree in Corporate Finance from the University of Barcelona (Spain). He has over 15 years of a professional career dedicated to designing, implementing, and directing entrepreneurship programs, currently from his company Cinnetico. According to experts, opening a business in Canada is possible thanks to the different factors that make this country a destination open to opportunities. The Toronto-Waterloo region is considered the Silicon Valley of the north, with a much higher rate of business creation than the US. Its principal cities, Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, are listed as leading ecosystems in Innovation and development, Startups, Artificial Intelligence, Video Game Industry.
Canadian lawyer, Andrew Carvajal, is one of the specialists who guide this process. In addition to being a partner at Desloges Law Group, he is originally from Toronto, where he leads the Economic Immigration area at the firm. His immigration practise focuses on corporate immigration, including work permits and applications for Labor Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs). Mr. Carvajal has been a member of the Ontario Law Society since 2011.

Tell us about your past professional experience
How were your first two years in Canada?
I moved to Canada a year after graduating with honours in Tourism Business Administration at the Universidad del Valle de Mexico. Upon arrival, I would’ve liked to work on something related to my major; however, without previous experience, I had to start with jobs as a cleaner, busgirl, cook, and factory worker. At some point, I got a non-paid opportunity as a travel agent, which I took as an investment for my future. After a few months, that decision served its purpose, and I was offered a paid job at another travel agency where I worked for four years until I went back to Mexico. When I arrived back home, with my proficiency in English, I was able to get a job in guest services at a renowned hotel in the city. A year later, the first Embassy of the State of Kuwait in Mexico was established inside the hotel where I worked, and unexpectedly, I was offered a job as the Assistant to the Ambassador and event planner. Two years later, I returned to Canada. Having worked at the Embassy of Kuwait, benefited me to get a job at the Consulate of Mexico in Toronto. Four years later, my life took another turn and I got a job at the Ontario Ministry of Education.
My first two years in Canada were of discovery. Discovering a new country, a new culture, a new way of living, but also, discovering my own strength. I faced many challenges, for instance; the language barrier, adjusting to the cost of living, the weather, the lack of opportunities for a young newcomer without Canadian experience, and of course, finding myself completely responsible for my well-being and my own success. Despite this, it was also in those first two years that I truly discovered how lucky and resilient I am. I’m blessed with having a supporting family, and I was lucky to find people along the way who, without even knowing me, opened their doors for me, offered me a helping hand, provided me with their support, and helped me find new opportunities. Looking back, I believe that’s what kept me hopeful and motivated to continue making my way and building a life in Canada.

What are the challenges that a working mom faces in Canada? I think one of the hardest things for was to find balance. As a single mom it was hard to manage household responsibilities while trying to guide my son in the best way possible and spending quality time with him, in addition to managing work, seeking opportunities of professional growth and trying to find time to take care of myself. At times I felt exhausted and overwhelmed, but somehow, I just had to make it work for the two of us. What is your current profession? I am currently a Project Coordinator/ Senior Protocol Officer at the Ontario Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs, Cabinet Office. Our office manages the relationship between foreign representations in Ontario and the office of the Premier and Cabinet Ministers. We also work with the office of the Lieutenant Governor. What advice would you give to those moms that daily face challenges such as being a woman and having a child? I think that it is important to try and build a network of people who you can trust and who you can reach out when needed. As parents, nothing compares to spending time with our children but there are days when we just need to step back a find a moment to take a breath and realign. Having a community to reach out for support can make a huge difference. Open up and ask for help, your own mental health and wellbeing is incredibly important so you can be there for your child. What do you enjoy in your free time, what to you do? I have a very curious mind and a nomadic soul. I truly enjoy learning new things, I practice meditation and mindfulness as I think it expands my mind and perspective. Music, singing and laughing are a must in my everyday. One of the things that really makes me feel fulfilled is travelling with people I love and discover new places with them.

LEIDY MEDINA VILLAMARIN CAME TO CANADA FROM COLOMBIA English Two super moms tell us about their experience arriving in Canada. And we say “super” because they do the impossible to see their family happy and get ahead in a completely new country for them. Leidy Medina Villamarin came to Canada from Colombia three and a half years ago. “I am a new mom! Our son was born in the summer of 2021 in Toronto; I received excellent medical care and 1-year maternity leave. I would have had to pay in Colombia, and the maternity leave would be for only four months. I attended the Baby Club at the community center; it is essential to relate to other mothers because it is challenging to be away from our families. Sometimes, you experience a lot of loneliness. I will return to work, and my son will have access to a subsidized kindergarten and will receive a monthly economic benefit; without a doubt, it is an excellent help for migrants like us. Despite all efforts, seeing your baby smile is worth everything.”

Y decimos “súper” porque hacen lo imposible por ver feliz a su familia y salir adelante en un país completamente nuevo para ellas. Leidy Medina Villamarin llegó a Canadá desde Colombia hace tres años y medio. “¡Soy mamá primeriza! Nuestro hijo nació en el verano del 2021 en Toronto, recibí excelente atención médica gratuita y una licencia de maternidad de 1 año, en Colombia tendría que haber pagado y la licencia sería de 4 meses. Asistí al Baby Club del centro comunitario, es importante relacionarse con otras madres porque estar lejos de la familia es difícil, en ocasiones se experimenta bastante soledad. Regresaré a trabajar, mi hijo accederá a un jardín infantil subsidiado y recibirá un beneficio económico mensual, sin duda es de gran ayuda para los migrantes como nosotros. Pese a los esfuerzos, ver a tu bebe sonreír lo vale todo”.

Español La SafeTTC es una aplicación móvil que ofrece a los usuarios de la TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) un método rápido y discreto para denunciar cualquier tipo de acoso o actividad sospechosa dentro del transporte público, directamente al Centro de Control de Tránsito de la TTC, en la ciudad de Toronto, Canadá. Esta app se encuentra disponible para dispositivos iOS y Android, y desde ahí, los usuarios pueden informar a detalle algún incidente o situación que observen, ya sea en un vehículo, en una estación del metro o en una parada de autobús o tranvía.
English SafeTTC is a mobile app that offers users of the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) a fast and discreet method to report any harassment or suspicious activity within public transport directly to the TTC Transit Control Center in Toronto, Canada. This app is available for iOS and Android devices. Users can report any incident or situation they observe, whether in a vehicle, subway station, or a bus or streetcar stop. To use it, you need to enter the home screen of the application and select one of these options: “Report a Problem” button. This option allows users to send texts and photos or videos directly to Traffic Control. From a series of drop-down menus, you will need to select the type of vehicle, route number, station location, and category for Transit Control to assess the situation and have the report. “Call the police” button. If you select this option, you will be connected directly to the 9-1-1 dispatch. Use it only in an emergency where police, fire, or medical assistance is required.
SafeTTC was designed with the subway system in mind. So if you submit a report in an area without cellular connectivity, it will be stored and automatically submitted as soon as you reconnect. You can download the app for free from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).

Victory Day celebration is a Canadian tradition and is also observed in Scotland but not elsewhere. Victoria was Canada's first queen when the country was founded in 1867. Queen Victoria became queen at the age of 18.

Mexican beaches are internationally known as some of the best, and with their crystal clear waters and warm climate, they have become the favourite destination of locals and foreigners. If you want to visit not-so-popular beaches but still enjoy the Mexican wonders, we recommend the following.

Akumal Sayulita Tourists from all over the world (German, French, American, among others) flock to this beach, attracted by a common element: the magical waves. You can see surfers enjoying the waves on this beach, and you can even have private surf lessons.
It is located in Quintana Roo state, near Cancun and the second largest reef in the world, which makes it perfect for diving and practicing some water activities. Akumal is also where sea turtles go to lay their eggs every year. Zipolite It is located in the state of Oaxaca. It is a beach that has carried the banner of freedom, peace, and love for years. Hippies from all over the world came to Zipolite to experience its atmosphere and join the counterculture twist it offered. JHONATTAN ARDILA COLOMBIAN IMMIGRANT ACHIEVES SUCCESS IN CANADIAN CINEMA JHONATTAN ARDILA: EL COLOMBIANO QUE LLEGÓ PARA TRIUNFAR EN EL CINE CANADIENSE English He was born in Cali, Colombia. At only four years of age, his parents decided to go to the United States to look for a better future for themselves and their son. He has lived in New York and Florida. However, the whole time he lived there, he was without immigration status. Due to immigration issues, his parents decided to go to Canada. In Montreal, he first approached the cinema, and he explained how this love affair began. How did you get into acting? It’s something I never thought about; in the United States, I took technology courses, and I liked it. So when I arrived in Canada without status or at first as a refugee, I couldn’t do that. I couldn’t practice or study, so as they say, God has everything planned since I needed to find a job. One day, I was on the internet looking for a job, and I saw a job posting that stated they needed extras for movies, so I wrote, and they scheduled an appointment, to which I went. That was in Montreal. And it turns out that it was for an X-Men movie, this was the first time I saw that because I hadn’t thought about the cinema or anything. Tell us about your venture as a director. Knocking on many doors, I managed to get a renowned talent agency in the country to represent me and thanks to that, I have been able to access Netflix movies and series. This dream began in Toronto. I signed with a manager. That one took me to another one and then another while looking for opportunities, and I started doing many student productions. The last series I did is called “Reacher” I was also in the last game of “Far Cry 6”. In this one, I had the opportunity to do the voice and the movements. I also did “iZombie,” “In the shadow of the Moon,” and “Taken,” among others.

What do you think of the roles of Latinos? All the actors in Toronto know each other. We are approximately 20, and we all go to the same castings. Most of the time, our characters are gardeners, kitchen helpers, gangsters, and such, so I said that I wanted to have the opportunity to be the main character and play a different role, and that is not a lie. So I got tired of waiting for someone to write that, so I did.
Español Nacido en Cali, Colombia. Desde los cuatro años sus padres decidieron irse a los Estados Unidos buscando un futuro mejor, para ellos y para su hijo. Vivió en Nueva York, en Florida, sin embargo, todo el tiempo estuvo allí sin papeles, sin estatus. Por temas migratorios sus padres tomaron la decisión de irse a Canadá. Fue en Montreal donde se da el primer acercamiento con el cine y nos contó como todo comenzó. ¿Cómo incursionas en la actuación? Es algo que nunca pensé. Yo en Estados Unidos, hacia cursos de tecnología y me gustaba como eso. Entonces cuando llegue a Canadá sin estatus o al principio como refugiado no podía hacer eso, no podía ejercer ni estudiar, entonces como dicen Dios tiene todo planeado, por la misma necesidad de encontrar trabajo. Una vez estaba en el internet buscando trabajo y veo que necesitan extras para películas, entonces escribí y me pusieron una cita y fui. Eso fue en Montreal. Y resulta que sí que era para una película de X-Men, esta fue la primera vez que vi eso, porque no había pensado ni en el cine ni nada. Háblanos de tus pasos ahora como director Esto empezó en Toronto. Gracias a Dios uno viene con la experiencia que a uno le ha tocado salir adelante pero poquito a poquito. Firmé con una manager, con una y con otra, buscando oportunidades, empecé a hacer muchas producciones estudiantiles. Tocando muchas puertas logré que me representará una agencia importante del país y gracias a eso he podido acceder a películas y series de Netflix. ¿Qué opinas de los papeles de los latinos? Todos los actores de Toronto nos conocemos, somos aproximadamente unos 20, todos vamos a los mismos castings. La mayoría de las veces los personajes de nosotros son jardineros, ayudantes de cocina, de gánster y esos, entonces dije que yo quería tener la oportunidad de no solo ser el protagonista, pero de hacer un papel que sea diferente y que no sea mentira lo que somos. WHERE TO LIVE If you are coming to Canada anytime soon, you must be thinking about where to live. Rental requirements are complicated for a newcomer. Try staying at an Airbnb or a homestay for one or two weeks. Finding stable accommodation will give you more time to search and flexibility since hotels are expensive. Staying at a hotel for a few days with the idea of looking for permanent accommodation is only an invitation to problems and unwanted expenses.

Yo te diría que lo sigas haciendo, porque de eso vivirás y comprarás. Es mejor que cuides mucho tus ahorros porque se van como agua, no será hasta que empieces a ganar en dólares cuando ya puedas por fin descansar un poco de la conversión. OLVÍDATE DE LOS LUJOS No trates de llevar la vida que llevabas en tu país de origen, por ahora es momento de concentrarte en que estás aquí para estudiar, iniciar una vida o trabaja, así que enfócate a ello. Recuerda que no vienes de turista. Nota: Obviamente tienes que disfrutar, conocer y turistear, pero siempre con el objetivo de hacerlo para distraerte y tomar energía para seguir adelante en este bello país.
