October, is also the month we celebrate Thanksgiving and there is many thing we should be thankful for, but do you know how we have come to celebrate thanksgiving, you can find out more within this issue.

Enrique Iglesias is featured on our cover, he was out of the spotlight since 2014 and he is back with a new album, although he did come out with several singles and he is now back on tour with Ricky Martin. As per the pandemic, we see that the situation is evolving and we are hopeful there is a end in sight. Question: I completed my post-secondary studies in Canada and I applied for a Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The visa stamped in my passport is still valid but it says “student”. Can I still travel outside of Canada and use this visa to re-enter even though I am no longer a student?

Pregunta: Terminé unos estudios post-secundarios en Canadá y apliqué a mi permiso de trabajo de post graduación (PGWP). La visa estampada en mi pasaporte sigue vigente pero dice “student”. ¿A pesar de que ya no soy estudiante todavía puedo viajar fuera de Canadá y utilizar esta visa?

Answer: The visa stamped in your passport (Temporary Resident Visa) is a travel document. This is something that allows a person to get on a plane and enter Canada because they are a citizen of a country that requires a visitor visa. This is independent from a work permit, such as a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), which is what grants an individual status in Canada. The expiration of the visa (TRV) does not affect a person’s status in Canada; it is the duration of the PGWP that determines the status. Similarly, if the PGWP expires, the person does not keep their status just because the TRV has not yet expired.

Respuesta: La visa estampada en su pasaporte (Temporary Resident Visa) es un documento de viaje. Esto es algo que le permite a una persona montarse a un avión e ingresar a Canadá, ya que es ciudadana de un país que requiere visa. Esto es totalmente independiente de un permiso de trabajo como el permiso de trabajo de post-graduacion (Post-Graduation Work Permit – PGWP) que es lo que otorga estatus en Canadá. El que venza la visa (TRV) no le quita el estatus en Canadá a una persona, lo que la mantiene en estatus es la duración del PGWP. In order to travel outside the U.S. and re-enter Canada, a person who needs a visa must have a valid TRV. However, it does not matter if the TRV says “student”, “worker” or “visitor”, what matters is that it is valid. If the TRV has expired, then it must be renewed if you plan to travel and re-enter Canada. This application can be made within Canada.

Question: I have an open work permit and a valid visitor visa (TRV), but both expire in December due to the expiration of my passport. I requested a new passport, but I would like to know if the TRV is still valid with my new passport or if I should apply for a new one.

Answer: The expiration date of an immigration document, whether it is a work permit or a tourist visa (Temporary Resident Visa), is not automatically extended when a passport is renewed. After renewing a passport, a person must apply for a new work permit and TRV, if eligible to renew these documents.

Respuesta: La fecha de vencimiento de un documento migratorio, tanto un permiso de trabajo como una visa de turismo (Temporary Resident Visa), no se extiende automáticamente al renovar el pasaporte. Al renovar el pasaporte una persona debe aplicar a un nuevo permiso de trabajo y TRV, de ser elegible a renovar estos documentos.

ast month, elections were held to elect new Members of Parliament and with it the hopes to elect a new Prime Minister or gain a majority government. Trudeau was able to hold on to power with a minority government for the second time. But what other things must we consider? What challenges will Trudeau face, as well as the opportunities that may arise in the coming years.

El mes pasado se llevaron a cabo elecciones para elegir al nuevo Primer Ministro de Canadá, en donde Justin Trudeau refrendó su lugar y se convirtió por tercera ocasión en el máximo mandatario de nuestro país.

MINORITY GOVERNMENT Since the liberal party did not gain a majority in Parliament, Justin Trudeau will have to negotiate with other parties to carry out the proposals he made while campaigning and turn them into initiatives or laws.

Pero ¿qué otras cosas hay que tomar en cuenta sobre este hecho? Aquí te contamos los retos que enfrentará el gobierno de Trudeau, así como las oportunidades que se tendrán en los próximos años. Compared to other countries in the world, we as immigrants see that society in Canada holds our governments accountable, we debate, and if we don’t like something, we simply vote them out. Proof of this is that these elections were very close, but still, the Liberal party was able to hold on to power.

En comparación a Latinoamérica, los inmigrantes vemos que la gente en Canadá sí le exige a su gobierno, no se calla, y si no le gusta algo simplemente le da NEXT. Prueba de ello es que estas elecciones fueron muy apretadas, pero aun así ganó la mayoría.

THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC Part of the public opinion says that Trudeau did not handle the pandemic correctly, in certain aspects it may be that it was one of the most restrictive countries in the world. But globally we were considered one of the nations that best handled the COVID-19 pandemic. However, being well aware, who actually handled the pandemic well? Countries like the USA reacted late and proof of this are the high numbers of contagion in more than a year and a half. WAS IT ELECTION TIME? Although it is true that the Trudeau government has made good choices, it must also be recognized that this was probably not the time to hold a snap election. We as citizens were not very objective when voting, and it is understandable, since many of us have been affected emotionally and physically by the pandemic, causing too many mixed feelings. Do you think it was a good time to hold elections? Anyway, at the end of the day, Canada is a beautiful country and thanks to elections we can hold our government accountable. Regardless of which party is in power and the preferences of each individual, we hope that whoever leads us in the coming years will work for and for all Canadians.

MANEJO DE LA PANDEMIA Parte de la opinión pública dice que Trudeau no manejó bien la pandemia y en ciertos aspectos puede ser que fuera de las más restrictivas, pero a nivel global fue considerada como una de las naciones que mejor manejó la situación del COVID-19. Sin embargo, siendo muy conscientes, ¿quién en realidad manejó bien la pandemia? Países como USA reaccionaron tarde y prueba de ello son las altas cifras de contagio en más de año y medio. ¿ERA MOMENTO DE ELECCIONES? Aunque es cierto que el gobierno de Trudeau ha tenido aciertos, también hay que reconocer que probablemente éste no era el tiempo para realizar elecciones. Los ciudadanos fuimos poco objetivos al momento de votar, y es comprensible, ya que muchos nos hemos visto afectados emocional y físicamente por la pandemia, haciendo que haya demasiados sentimientos encontrados. ¿Tú crees que fue un buen momento para hacer comicios electorales? En fin, al final del día Canadá es un país hermoso y gracias a su gente ordenada y exigente tiene un buen gobierno. Independientemente de qué partido esté en el poder y de las preferencias de cada individuo, esperamos que quien nos gobierne en los próximos años trabaje por y para el pueblo canadiense y para mejorar nuestras oportunidades como inmigrantes.

English Singer, Composer and actress was named Artist of the year by the Bilboard awards in Argentina and Most Popular female Argentinean Artist in Spotify releases “Maldita Foto” joined by the Colombian Manuel Turizo.

After two years of being completely away from the stage due to the pandemic, Tini performed at the Madrid festival on September 4th. “It’s incredible really, I had to suspend what was my last ‘show’ in Madrid due to the pandemic and now coming back and meeting the public in Spain was beautiful,” she said.

“Maldita Foto” is the second song in the latest production of Tini, the first song was “Mienteme” and with that song she captivated international audiences, the song is still very popular. “You never know what will happen to the songs and I am very astonished with what happened, this is a song that has the spirit of our Argentine cumbia and people from all over the world are enjoying these rhythms makes me proud and makes me very happy “, said Tini. This song along with the urban ballad of “Maldita foto” are a preview of the new sound that the singer seeks to explore.

HISPANIC HERITAGE CELEBRATING MONTH, DIVERSITY! English The Hispanic and Latino Community is growing in Canada and a proof of this is that our Canadian Parliament established in 2018 that October would be designated “Hispanic Heritage Month”. In order to celebrate the contributions of all immigrants that belong to this diverse community. As Hispanic-Latinos we contribute to the social, economic and political fabric of this great country we now call home. Although it is a relatively new celebration, the city of Toronto celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month since 2009. This is when Toronto City Council declared April as the month to celebrate our heritage. However, by 2014 the date was transferred to October when the Hispanic Canadian Heritage Council was created. Afterward, the province of Ontario declared October the official date for Hispanic Heritage in 2015. At the same time, it was chosen to use the term “Hispanic” to refer to everyone who has a Latin American Origin or are Hispanic. However, it took a couple of years for Hispanic Heritage Month to become declared as a national celebration. It was until September 16th of 2018 when Parliament named it the “Latin American Heritage Month Act” which was delivered at a gala party to the Toronto community by Member of Parliament Pablo Rodríguez, who at that time was appointed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as Minister of Culture and Multiculturalism.

This makes it clear to us, that the Latino community has earned a place within this beautiful nation. Like those who were born here, we have worked and contributed so much to this country that gave us new opportunities to study, work and live. We are very happy to be here and contribute to society.

EL MES DE LA HERENCIA HISPANA, UNA CELEBRACIÓN LLENA DE DIVERSIDAD Español Los hispanos y latinos hemos tomado gran fuerza en el país conforme pasan los años, prueba de ello es que el Parlamento de Canadá estableció de forma oficial en 2018, que el mes de octubre de cada año sería designado para celebrar a todos los inmigrantes pertenecientes a estas comunidades. Esto con el fin de reconocer nuestra valiosa contribución al tejido social, económico y político canadiense. Aunque, si bien esta celebración es relativamente nueva, su historia data desde mucho tiempo atrás. ¿Quieres saber más? Entonces sigue leyendo. Como te comentamos, de forma oficial se conmemora desde hace 3 años, pero en Toronto, comenzó desde antes. La historia inicia en 2009, cuando la Alcaldía de Toronto proclamó la celebración del “Mes de la Herencia Hispana” en abril de cada año. Sin embargo, para el año 2014 la transfirió a octubre, al ser creado el Consejo Canadiense de la Herencia Hispana. Luego, la provincia de Ontario sería la primera en instituir oficialmente un Mes de la Herencia Hispana en 2015. Asimismo, se eligió el término “hispano” para referirse a todos las personas que tengan un origen latinoamericano o que sean hispanohablantes. Sin embargo, para que el Mes de la Herencia Hispana fuera reconocido oficialmente en todo Canadá, tuvieron que pasar unos años más. Fue hasta el 16 de septiembre de 2018 que el Parlamento firmó definitivamente el “Acta del Mes de la Herencia Latinoamericana” la cual fue entregada en una fiesta de gala a la comunidad de Toronto por el diputado Pablo Rodríguez, quien en ese entonces fue nombrado por el mismo Justin Trudeau como ministro de Cultura y Multiculturalismo de Canadá. Esto nos deja en claro que desde hace mucho la comunidad latina se ha ganado un lugar dentro de esta bella nación. Al igual que quienes nacieron aquí, hemos trabajado y aportado tanto a este país que nos dio nuevas oportunidades de estudio, trabajo y de vida, y nos sentimos muy orgullosos de estar aquí.

Agradecer Como lo dice la propia fecha, este día se trata de agradecer. Por lo mismo, en algunas casas, se realiza una oración de gracias para conmemorar este día tan especial. No importa la religión o creencias, lo importante es dar gracias por todo lo bueno.

Como dato cultural, el Thanksgiving Day se celebraría el 6 de noviembre, pero en los años 50 se determinó que sería el segundo lunes del mes de octubre. Esto se debe a que Canadá está más al norte y las cosechas se recogen mucho antes.
