This month's cover reflects a fiesta through the vibrant piñata. The expression through color in every layer demonstrates pride in culture and heritage that is now a part of celebrations for everyone. I always enjoy the excitement brought on by the piñata, and how everyone jumps at the content and fun it brings, which I thought was appropriate as we celebrate this observance.

As we embark on Hispanic Heritage Month, it is great to see our colorful culture. We are a community of 57 million strong who refuse to be a political piñata during elections and when facing issues. That's why every voice and every vote matters. Collectively, we can achieve big dreams for our community. With that, let the celebration begin from September 15th to October 15th! Hispanic Heritage Month A

s I r e flect on the current state of Hispanics I'm sad to say that I am disgusted by the treatment and political antics against our community.

As the Publisher of Latino Lubbock Magazine (LLM), it’s my personal mission to deliver to my readers a publication that is objective and informative with a level of passion and soul equal to the Latino spirit. Yet, it is difficult when many communities are under attack, and it feels personal for the Latino community, and to me!

The administration’s tactics go well beyond their claim of just targeting violent criminals. They’re racial profiling all Latinos, citizen and noncitizen alike […] with no criminal records, trying to go to work, checking in at health care facilities, taking their children to school, going to church, and showing up for court appointments.

Interestingly, less than 10% of those detained have been convicted of violent offenses.

The regression of our community should be a concern for all, and yet we must stay strong and move forward.

In 1988, Congress authorized September 15 through October 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month.

During this month, America celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, and the Spanishspeaking nations of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

As we talk about the Latino population growth. Latinos remain one of the fastest-growing racial and ethnic groups in the United States today.

And what I think is important to note is that they have accounted for about half of the nation’s population growth since 2010, and even before that, into the 1990s, about half of the U.S. population growth since then has come from growth in the U.S. Hispanic population.

Hispanics make up almost one in five Americans today, and that’s

up from less than 5 percent back in 1970. With this type of growth, it makes sense why we are so targeted.

And, once again, as we embark upon this national observance, what we continue to witness is the role of Hispanics regressing - in media, in leadership roles, etc. It is a true disappointment and not what we ever imagined.

Latino Lubbock Magazine is a platform and a tool for dialogue, not just for Hispanics, but for the community at large. We share content in a respectful and unifying manner to foster relations in our community for all Latinos, allies, supporters, activists, concerned citizens, and the public to analyze, review, understand, and present solutions related to Latinos and those of our community.

Like many, we are conflicted and know that as Americans we've been pushed beyond understanding.

Many who have become victims of this aggression believe that the diversity of our country is the backbone of our strength.

We must take a stand when it comes to racism, discrimination, corruption, exclusion, misinformation, dictatorship, human rights, and SUPPRESSION. Working together for our community is not a partisan activity. It is necessary, and we can all advocate for better health care, better education, better housing, and civil rights - and INCLUSION. Defending the powerless against the powerful is not so much a statement of our politics as it is a statement of our humanity. It is also, at its core, our job or charge as Americans, and as a community locally to nationally.

This is an existential moment. If we do not act to end the assault, if our community does not rise to challenge it, if we do not inspire our allies to join us and galvanize the public to act, this affects the very core of who we are as a nation and what we stand for.

Annually, I share this message with you...and will continue because we need to be reminded of the legacy left by those who struggled first, and those who persevere.

Despite our diversity, Latinos have a shared public policy agenda. Like all Americans, we desire a government that stays off our backs but stands by our side. Hispanics believe in a fair government that guarantees

equal opportunity for all by reducing discrimination in employment, housing, health care, and education by ending racial profiling -- by making sure working families, and not just the wealthy, get a tax cut. Latinos want a humane government that maintains our traditions as a nation of immigrants by acting to not stand on the side and watch the dehumanization of immigrant children.

Hispanics need a compassionate government that helps people in difficult circumstances get back on their feet by providing job training to those who need it, by working toward a health care system that works for everybody, and by increasing support for home-ownership programs and other asset-building strategies.

Latinos expect their hard earned dollars to support a government that invests wisely in its young people today to ensure our country's economic prosperity tomorrow by making preschool universal so all kids start school ready to learn ... so all students, rich or poor, get the same opportunities, by supporting community-based education programs, to prevent dropouts and help those who do fall through the cracks.

Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, Raul Yzaguirre, also the past CEO of NCLR, now Unidos US, forewarned, "We will not be inspired by a message alone. A few phrases in Spanish won't work anymore. Promises can be broken in Spanish as well as in English. Like other Americans, Latinos will vote on issues for candidates who deliver. And, like other Americans, we will hold elected officials and all political parties accountable for actions, not just words," he expressed confidently that Hispanic Americans believe and will continue to strive for the American dream.

Yzaguirre's words were a call to action, and they are just as relevant today as we continue to fight to make the promises of democracy real for all Americans. It is why, generation after generation, our forefathers have worked so tenaciously to make sure all of us have a voice and that all of us exercise our right to vote.

While some recognize that we continue to become this nation’s largest and fastest-growing ethnic group, we continue to be big business, potential voters, and vital to leadership and decision-making roles... and yet, our contributions are often disregarded

because they have not yet felt our power or considered our contributions.

The Latino population growth has been dispersing across the country.

About half of the Hispanic population is in California and Texas alone, so about half of that 62 million live in just those two states. And suppose you include Florida, New York State, New Jersey, and Illinois. In that case, you’ll start to get up to three-quarters of the Hispanic population in just a handful of states, which has implications for the distribution of potential voters from this group. Unfortunately, Texas’ governor’s decision to redraw redistricting maps will have consequences. This grwoth is part of the reason why we have become THE TARGET. Political season or not, we must not allow ourselves ever to become a political piñata, hitting us with what they think they want us to hear, but often they end up insulting our intelligence and never genuinely listening or validating who we are and our needs. Needs that include equity in purchasing homes, health care, good schools, safety, and jobs.

We must claim and become owners of our future because many still see Hispanics only as supplicants and not as decision-makers, as consumers and not as producers, as law breakers and not as law enforcers, and as tax expenditures and not as tax contributors. And while stereotypes about the Hispanic community abound, invisibility is even more pervasive.

The fact is that Hispanics are not only about demanding our rights but also about fully preparing to shoulder responsibility. Latinos want to build a nation where people are judged by their actions and not by their accents.

The growth is there.... and yet, generation after generation, our growth and our contributions remain disregarded because our share of voters doesn't quite match our share in the general population. Will you stand up, or sit on the sidelines? Or will you disregard who you are and allow the abuse of our community to fit in and be accepted?

Now is the time for Latinos to be politically engaged, and our votes could not be more decisive. A critical part of our civic engagement work is to ensure that citizens know their rights and get involved in the political process at all levels—local, re-

gional, state, and national. We call on all eligible voters to register and vote in every election they can, encouraging others to do their part as well.

Collectively, we have to use the power of our voice and, above all, come election time, we have to use the power of our vote. Our time is now! ¡Es nuestro momento!

Now more than ever, Hispanic organizations must work collectively to sustain our contributions, existence, and place at the table. We must call on community leaders and organizations to seek justice through the courts and hold our elected officials accountable. Additionally, we call on individuals to take actions to express their concerns through traditional and social media, as well as with higher officials.

And when faced with injustice, we must stand up to it. We must double down. We must go back to our communities, back to the town halls, and back to the polls when elections come. We cannot sit on the side.

I also call on our non-Hispanic friends and remind them not to be silent.

Martin Luther King Jr. had several famous quotes regarding silence, including: "There comes a time when silence is betrayal"; "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter"; and "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends". Please, do not be silent!

Still, in observance of this month dedicated to us, Latinos should be admired for believing in the sanctity of the heritage of language and culture and how we treasure these gifts, and for our continuous, and often overlooked, contributions to society.

Above all, Hispanics must be viewed not as the problem but as part of the solution. And, with God's favor, and as the best days of this community are to come, and as Hispanics ascend, I commit that there will be a direct link between these realities. ¡Ánimo!

The request seeks approval of Specific Use for a permanent cement batch plant at 1509 Marshall, north of Grinnell Street and west of Avenue N, on approximately 4.359 acres of unplatted land.

I want to highlight th ree critical concerns: cumulative industrial burden, documented environmental risk, and longterm neighborhood impact.

Cumulative Industrial Burden Our neighborhoods are already surrounded by heavy industrial uses on multiple sides.

• To the west, Miller Mortuary - located immediately next to the Mahon, Jackson, and Guadalupe neighborhoods - was recently fined by TCEQ for a clean air violation. This is not theoretical risk; it is a documented example of how nearby industrial operations have already failed to meet basic environmental standards.

• This request proposes adding a permanent cement batch plant to the north of us.

This means our neighborhoods would be boxed in on three sides by industrial operations with known emissions, dust, noise, and truck traffic. The cumulative effect is not reasonable, and it is not equitable.

Documented Environmental and Health Concerns Cement batch plants generate particulate matter, dust, truck emissions, and noise.

Even with mitigation, these impacts accumulate over time. Residents already report dust settling on porches, vehicles, and outdoor spaces from existing operations.

Not to mention all that is inhaled at just stepping out onto their yards.

The recent TCEQ enforcement action against Miller Mortuary demonstrates that environmental violations do occur - and when they do, our neighborhoods pay the price. Adding another highimpact industrial use increases the likelihood of additional burdens on air quality and public health.

Long-Term Neighborhood Impact

a nd protect i ng est ablished neighborhoods. Approving another batch plant at this location would undermine that balance.

The property is unplatted, and its proximity to long-standing neighborhoods makes it uniquely sensitive. A Specific Use should only be granted when the benefits clearly outweigh the burdens placed on surrounding residents. In this case, the burden is substantial, and the benefit to the broader community is limited.

For these reasons, I respectfully ask the council to deny the Specific Use request for a permanent batch plant at 1509 Marshall.

Our neighborhoods are already carrying more than their fair share of industrial activity. Adding another batch plant would intensify environmental risk, reduce quality of life, and further surround our

CENSORSHIP INEQUITIES I'm really dissapointed with the folks who are trying to censor books in LISD. While I appreciate that the trustees have been cooperative, and believe that Dr. Rollo looks out for her students. The"Censor Crew" on the other hand are attacking our school district for the wrong reasons. Its not because they care about the kids, if that's the case then why is their leader not holding Cooper School District accountable for the books they carry?!

Why are these people not holding Frenship ISD accountable for not posting their book list online - like required by the State of Texas?!

Oh yeah, we know why! Because LISD has a significant minority student enrollment, and we know how this group feel about minorities.

They want to use LISD as an example, and hurt them because of the brown and black bodies they teach.

A separate, nationwide injunction blocking the U.S. Postal Service from implementing the order’s mail-ballot mandates remains in place, meaning the core of the executive order is still blocked for now, even as today’s ruling clears the way for other parts of it to move forward. The president’s executive order, if ultimately deemed lawful, would give the federal government unprecedented control over which voters can receive a mail-in ballot, threatening access for millions of eligible voters across the country.

Lubbock Sets Property Tax Rate

Lubbock ISD reports the homestead exemption led to about $1 billion less taxable property across the district this year.

During its financial update today, it reports cost-cutting across the district in the face of a $22 million shortfall.

• Life insurance conversation uncomfortable - When it comes to life's most important topics, higher percentages of parents feel comfortable talking with their children about drugs and alcohol (55 percent), religion (53 percent) and politics (44 percent) than discussing life insurance (38 percent), family finances (36 percent) or sex/puberty (30 percent).

• Parents count - 45 percent of Americans first learned about life insurance from a family member. Daughters were most likely to name their moms (21 percent) as their top source for first learning about life insurance, while sons are most likely to list their dads (22 percent). Becoming a parent is the number one life event that prompts individuals to obtain life insurance coverage (37 percent), however just 51 percent of parents have individual life insurance policies outside of work.

• Most families budget for vacations/cell phones before life insurance - More than 7 in 10 parents consider life insurance to be important (71 percent) and over three-fourths say it plays a role in their overall

chase life insurance.

A greater percentage of parents would be willing to adjust their budget to afford cable TV (76 percent), a family vacation (69 percent), or a cell phone and service for each family member (62 percent), compared to life insurance.

• Knowledge Curve Seventy-eight percent of Americans consider themselves at least somewhat knowledgeable about life insurance. However, one in five (22 percent) feel they are not at all knowledgeable about life insurance.

• More than death benefits - Forty-four percent of Americans believe that "life insurance benefits are only accessible when an insured family member passes away." However, many policies offer benefits while a policyholder is still alive. These "living benefits" can be accessed for qualified college, retirement and emergency expenses (this may reduce the death benefit and cash value).

Key Tax Terms to Know

ere are some key terms when various local governments work on setting a property tax rate.

No-new-revenue tax rate: This takes into consideration how much appraised values have changed, and would provide the taxing entity with roughly the same revenue from properties on the tax rolls for both years. It does not take into consideration new development or other significant changes to property.

If your property’s appraised value change is in line with the average change across your district/city/county, the no-new-revenue rate means your tax bill will be the same as last year.

Voter-approval tax rate: In most cases, according to the Texas Comptroller’s Office, if a government adopts a rate above the voterapproval rate, it triggers an election for voters to approve the tax increase.

A property tax rate does not continue from one year to the next. Taxing entities must set a rate every year.

Exemptions: The Texas Comptroller’s Office has information on the homestead exemption, exemptions for those 65 or older, citizens who are disabled, disabled veterans or their surviving spouses, surviving spouses of first responders killed in the line of duty, and others.

holesterol is bad for you, right? It’s actually a bit more complicated than that. Cholesterol is a part of every cell in your body and plays an important role in keeping you healthy. The two most important kinds of cholesterol to monitor are HDL, or high-density lipoprotein, and LDL, or low-density lipoprotein, both of which play a part in your overall well-being.

LDL, more commonly known as “bad cholesterol,” can become bad for you when it builds up on artery walls, impeding the flow of blood and increasing your risk of heart disease—the number one cause of

death among Americans, including Hispanics, according to the American Heart Association. HDL, on the other hand, is believed to carry cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where it can be eliminated from the body. Some experts believe that HDL removes excess cholesterol and slows buildup on artery walls. So reducing your risk of heart disease is not as simple as lowering cholesterol levels, or even lowering the level of LDL. In fact, some experts believe that it’s not actually the levels of cho-

Currently there is no effective way to screen for ovarian cancer. Because of this the disease often goes undetected until it is at an advanced stage.

However, women may prevent the disease by following these healthy living guidelines:

n September 1968, Congress authorized Presid e n t Ly ndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week, which was observed during the week that in-

cluded Sept. 15 and Sept.

16. The observance was expanded in 1988 by Congress to a month long celebration (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15), effective the following year.

America celebrates the culture and t raditions of those who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-

speaking nations of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of the independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept.

18, respectively.

The U.S. Government, in wanting to recognize the accomplishments of Hispanic-American citizens created by Public Law 90-498 National Hispanic Heritage Week on September 17, 1968. The law was later amended by Public Law 100402 expanding the event to National Hispanic Heritage Month on

What is a Hispanic? Let's start by saying what it is not. It is not a racial identification. Hispanic is more of a regional identification like saying "North American." What is a Hispanic? Hispanics come in all sizes and shapes. There are Jewish, Arab, Asian, Indian, Black and White Hispanics as well as brown.

What most Americans perceive as brown is actually a mix of Indian and White. When Spanish explorers settled the Americas, they did not bring families with them like the English settlers did when they arrived in the U.S. The Spanish explorers were mostly soldiers and priests, etc. As a result, the soldiers intermarried with the Indian women they found in the countries they explored. The result was a new ra-

cial identity known as mestizos. In time, mestizos became the middle class and the largest population.

The U.S. Census Bureau defines Hispanic Origin as persons of Hispanic origin were identified by a question that asked for self-identification of the person's origin or descent. Respondents were asked to select their origin (and the origin of other household members) from a "flash card" listing ethnic origins. Persons of Hispanic origin, in particular, were those who indicated that their origin was Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or some other Hispanic origin. It should be noted that persons of Hispanic origin may be of any race.

Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic H o n o r S o c i e t y, has been named an "Honor Chapter" for its outstanding activities in 2025-26. This is the 22nd consecutive year that Texas Tech has received this honor that was granted to only 12 chapters nationwide in 2026.

Professor Comfort Pratt, Texas Tech’s chapter adviser and current national Sigma Delta Pi VicePresident of the Southwest, was instrumental in earning this and previous year’s awards.

Each summer, the 640 chapters of Sigma Delta Pi nationwide are asked to submit an annual report detailing their numerous activities and projects from the academic

t’s crazy that the school year is change routines but establish new Iexcited underway, but I’m so nervously ones too, and to see what the year has in having a plan store for everyone. I am happy to say I made varsity tennis, and our high school tennis team has been doing well. I’ve enjoyed our team bonding events, and I think we are building team chemistry and culture. My goals for the rest of the year include making straight A’s, volunteering for my community, making it to regionals in tennis this year, finishing my driving hours for my license, and being the best person that I can be. Let Us Not Forget

n September 11, 2001, ter- Middle East. They belonged to a still working to help rebuild and O rorists attacked the Unites terrorist group called Al Qaeda stabilize the nation. Since 2001, States. They hijacked (ahl KAY-dah), led many Al Qaeda members have four airplanes in midflight. The terrorists flew two of the planes into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact caused the buildings to catch fire and collapse. Another plane destroyed part of the Pentagon (the U.S. military headquarters) in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Officials believe that the terrorists on that plane intended to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. Passengers on the plane fought the terrorists and prevented them from reaching their goal. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks.

A total of 19 terrorists hijacked the four planes on 9/11. All of the men were from nations in the

Al Qaeda practices an extreme version of the religion of Islam. The group is intensely opposed to the United States and other Western, democratic nations. They are especially against the military presence of these countries in Arab nations. Since the group’s creation by bin Laden in the late 1980s, Al Qaeda has helped coordinate and fund numerous bombings worldwide.

In October 2001, the U.S. and its allies invaded Afghanistan, where Al Qaeda was based. The extreme Islamic group that ran Afghanistan's government, known as the Taliban, was protecting Bin Laden and allowing Al Qaeda to run training camps in the country. U.S.-led forces soon brought down the Taliban. They are are

The U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003.

Then President George W. Bush and other U.S. leaders believed that the country’s dictator, Saddam Hussein, was hiding terrible weapons that could be given to terrorists. Hussein was captured and later put to death by an Iraqi court. No weapons of mass destruction were found.

Following 9/11, the U.S. government took many steps to try to make the country safer. Let us not forget.

argarita R. Estrada turned 100 years old on July 20, 2026. Family and friends gathered to honor this remarkable milestone during a special birthday celebration held on July 18 at One Accord Fellowship in Lubbock, Texas.

Margarita was born on July 20, 1926, in Poth, Texas, to Marcus and Refugia Rodriguez. She grew up with five brothers—Francisco, Antonio, Jose, Marcos Jr., and Juan—and one sister, Luisa.

In 1949, Margarita moved to Levelland, Texas, with her family.

There she met the love of her life, Jose T. Estrada. The couple married on December 29, 1949, and together they were blessed with twelve children: Francisca, Jose T. Jr., David, Juan, Miguel, Eduardo, Francisco, Eduarda, Santiago, Jose T. III, Pablo, and Margarita.

Her birthday celebration was filled with love as her four

living children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-greatgrandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends came together to celebrate her century of life. Family members traveled from New York, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and communities across Texas to share in this unforgettable occasion.

Margarita is deeply loved by everyone who knows her. When asked about the secret to living such a long and blessed life, she simply says, "I have no secrets.

God is the one that has given me this long life."

Her faith, love for family, and enduring spirit continue to inspire generations. Happy 100th Birthday, Margarita R. Estrada!

May God continue to bless you with His love, peace, and abundant grace.

Mexican Independence Day

l 15 September 1810 is the day of E the "Grito de Dolores" or Miguel Hidalgo's call to take up arms against

Spanish colonial government. The movement that led to Mexico's independence began on September 16, 1810.

Miguel Hidalgo is regarded as the "Father of Independence". Hidalgo, a criollo Catholic priest, called his parishioners to arms with his nowfamous Grito ("Shout") de Dolores, in the small town of Dolores (now Dolores Hidalgo) to Chihuahua.

He marched to Guanajuato, where the Spanish barricaded themselves in a grain warehouse.

El Pípila, a miner who burned down the doors,

gave Hidalgo the first victory of the independence movement. With Ignacio Allende, he defeated Spanish forces at the battle of Monte de las Cruces, just outside Mexico City. But rather than pressing to the capital, he retreated to Guanajuato and spent the rest of the war fleeing from a bolstered royalist army. His forces occupied Guadalajara but then were pushed northward toward the U.S. border, where they hoped to find refuge. The Spanish army caught up with Hidalgo in the state of Jalisco and convicted him of treason. He was executed by firing squad in Chihuahua in 1811, and his head was put on public display in Guanajuato for 10 years.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 says, “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” Notice it doesn’t say everything is beautiful while we are waiting. Some seasons are confusing, frustrating, even painful. But God sees what we cannot see. What feels like a delay to us may actually be God preparing something in us.

Yet none of those seasons meant God had forgotten Joseph. God was developing the man who would eventually carry the promise.

Isaiah 40:31 reminds us, “But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength.” Waiting on God isn’t doing nothing. It is trusting, praying, growing, obeying, and believing while the answer is still unseen. God’s silence doesn’t mean His absence, and His delay doesn’t mean His denial. Keep trusting. Keep walking. Keep believing. God is never late. He is preparing you for what He has prepared for you.

Jenifer Ann Mares, 45, died on July 23, 2026. She was born on April 21, 1981. Her unwavering spirit guided her through life’s joys and challenges, shaping a legacy that will continue to inspire all who were graced by her

presence.

To her beloved husband, Jose MaresSanchez, Jenifer was a loyal companion and true partner. Together they shaped a home brimming with laughter, compassion, and the gentle cadence of everyday togetherness. Their union created a tapestry of enduring love – a story now honored in treasured memory.

As a mother, Jenifer’s dedication was both tireless and fierce, her heart enormous enough to embrace each of her eight children: Isaiah Dominick Mares, Jose Luis Mares III, Nicholas Lee Mares, Maximo Samuel Mares, Ezequiel Adriano Mares, Danika Sophia Mares, Zoe Alina Mares, and Richard Gael Mares.

Jenifer’s bond with her family extended far beyond her immediate circle. Her parents are Richard O., Rebecca Martinez, and Cruz Perez-Castillo, holding fast to the traditions and values instilled in her youth.

Her siblings include Richard Martinez, Jr., Fernando H. Martinez, Fabian H. Martinez, Victoria (Francisco) Ortiz, and Adam Soto.

Juan Olivares, Sr., 86, born June 24, 1940 tand passed away August 15, 2026.

Born in Laredo, Texas, on June 24, 1940 to Francisco Olivares Sr and Caledonia Olivares (Ortiz). He began his career with Brown Express in Laredo, before moving to Shallowater, where he and his wife worked on a ranch together. He later continued his career with A&D of Midland in Lubbock. He also earned his GED later in life.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife Maria Diana Olivares, and his daughter Amy Lee Olivares. His siblings as well include: Augustina Olivares, Maria Olivares, Simona Olivares, Antonio Olivares, Francisco Olivares Jr, and his parents Francisco Olivares Sr and Celedonia Olivares.

He is survived by his children Maria Diana Rivera, Sophia Aide Davila, Juan Olivares Jr, and Francisco Antonio Olivares, as well as his grandchildren, extended family and many friends.

Abelia Vasquez, 91, August 5, 2026 She was born on December 15, 1934, in Kenedy, Texas to the late Eliseo and Manuela Flores. Later in life she went on to marry Manuel Vasquez Sr. on November 25, 1948, in Kenedy, Texas cherishing 65 years of a loving marriage before he preceded her in death on February 9, 2014.

She is preceded in death by her parents Eliseo and Manuela Flores; her husband Manuel Vasquez Sr.; a son Arturo Vasquez; a daughter Francis Vasquez; brothers Jose Flores, Chindo Flores, Beto Flores, Pete Flores, Isreal Flores and Erasmo Flores; sisters Florinda Lopez and Tulis Shoemaker; grandsons Isaac Mendoza, Ben Vasquez and Joshua Mendoza; a daughter in law Lupe Vasquez.

She is survived by her sons Manuel Vasquez Jr. (Leticia) of Wolfforth, Eliseo Vasquez of Lubbock, Felix Vasquez of Idalou, Adan Vasquez of Round Rock and Abel Vasquez (Yolanda) of Round Rock; daughters Margaret Garcia of Idalou, Christine Flores (Alfredo Flores) of McKinney, Vicki Vasquez of Round Rock and Liza Vasquez of Idalou; a brother Ike Flores (Antonia) of Lubbock; a sister Elisa Castillo (Anastacio) of Utah; 26 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren and 20 great great grandchildren.

Deacon Richard Joe Flores, 88, passed away on August 14, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on August 2, 1938, in Pintada, New Mexico, Richard lived a life marked by devotion, service, and unwavering faith.

A proud Veteran of the United States Army, Richard served his country with honor and humility, ultimately retiring at the distinguished rank of Sergeant First Class at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Throughout his military career, he earned several commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He was also proud to hold a Sharpshooter Badge, a testament to his skill, discipline, and dedication as a soldier.

He continued his lifelong commitment to service as an Ordained Deacon, faithfully supporting his church community and ministering to those in need. Throughout his years of ministry, he served as a member of the clergy in Lubbock, Anton, and Littlefield, offering prayer, comfort, and guidance with a gentle spirit. His faith was evident in the way he treated others—always with kindness, humility and a servant’s heart.

Richard was deeply devoted to his family.

He was married to Luteria Flores, his beloved wife and steadfast companion, with whom he shared 68 years of marriage.

He is survived by his children: Loretta Salas, Richard Flores Jr., Ray Flores, Theresa Guidry, and Ann Marie Flores. He was blessed with a growing family - eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Julia Flores, and by three siblings. He is survived by four loving siblings.

Manuel Vasquez, Sr. passed away on August 19, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on March 3, 1938, and lived a life marked by love, hard work, faith, service, and devotion to family.

Manuel proudly served his country in the United States Army from March 8, 1955, to March 7, 1958, an accomplishment that remained a meaningful part of his life. He was also a member of the Class of 1954 at St. Joseph's School in Maumee, Ohio.

In his working years, he served as a Texas Tech Ground Maintenance Technician on the sign and striping crew, bringing the same steady work ethic and resilience to his career that defined so much of his life.

Among the accomplishments he held closest to his heart were serving his country in the Army, marrying his beloved wife, Jineva, and raising his two children, Elena and Manuel Jr. He found joy in camping, gardening, and playing Bingo, and he enjoyed attending church and spending time at the Senior Center.

Manuel is survived by his son, Manuel Vasquez Jr. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jineva Vasquez; his daughter, Elena Vasquez; his mother, Juanita Morin; and his father, Bonnie Vasquez.

Minnie H. Ramirez, 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

She was the heart of our home and our family. She raised seven children in a happy, loving home and taught them to be independent, hardworking, and caring individuals. Beyond raising her own children, she also helped raise three of her grandchildren, Jerry, Amanda, and Megan, giving them the same love, guidance, and care she had always given her family.

Minnie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard, with whom she shared 64 years of marriage; her son, Jerry Ramirez; her parents, Pasquel and Martha Hernandez; her brother, Placido Hernandez; her nephew, Lewis Garibay, who was more like a little brother to her; and her sonin-law, Adam Acebedo.

Mauro Padron Olguin, born on January 28, 1951, in Cuidad Fernandez, San Luis Potosi, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2026. Mauro’s life was marked by humility, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his family, his work, and his faith. At the age of 17, Mauro made a bold journey to the United States in the 1970s, accompanied by his cousin Matias. The stories of their travels were cherished in family lore, painting a portrait of youthful determination and resilience. This brave beginning laid the groundwork for the values Mauro carried with him—hard work, commitment, and a spirit of adventure.

Throughout his life, Mauro dedicated himself to the craft of masonry.

In December of 1974, he married Mary Alice Olguin, embarking on a lifelong partnership built on love and mutual support.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Alice; their cherished children, Priscilla Olguin, Mauro Olguin Jr., Alfredo Olguin, and Erica Olguin; and his adored mother, Carmen Padron.

Mauro’s influence extended through generations. He was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren and great-grandfather to three. Mauro’s family tree also branches to include 4 sisters, 2 brothers, and numerous nieces and nephews, who remain to cherish his memory.

Crystal Nicole “Dolly” Vela, 40, passed away on August 10, 2026, in Lubbock. She was born on November 20, 1985, in Lubbock, to Cindy Espinoza and Arthur Arguello.

Crystal graduated from high school in Lubbock, Texas, in 2004.

She went on to work as a licensed cosmetologist and later as a customer service representative.

Crystal was known for her loving personality, her genuine love for children, and her contagious laugh that could brighten any room. She leaves behind her children, Alyson and Austen Hernandez, and her cherished grandchild, Azaiah Mallory, who brought immense love and joy into her life.

She is also survived by her siblings, Dewayne Arguello, Dominic Arguello, Alexander Espinoza, and Alexis Espinoza, along with her beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, and her maternal grandparents, Willie and Rosa Rocha.
