Sonny Garza Receives Querídos lectores...

2026 Lifetime Achievement Honor U pon being sworn in for my second four year term on the Lubbock City Council, I talked about my late grandfather Don Juan Martinez. He always shared moments of wisdom.

I recall a few days before I was going away to college to always strive for higher education. More so, telling me that when I became successful, not to forget to reach back and pull forward the next generation behind me.

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) released a comprehensive data analysis on the state of education across all educational levels, and it appears enrollment of Latino students at college campuses continues to increase.

But while Latino enrollment has increased overall, the Latino student population as a whole still lags behind the enrollment rate of other groups.

The same pattern exists with the number of college degrees awarded to Latino students.

Also according to the NCES data, from 1976 to 2017, the Latino presence in degree-granting postsecondary institutions increased from 4% to 19% overall, whereas during the same period, the percentage of Caucasian students dropped from 84% to 56%.

It was estimated that the number of college degrees awarded (associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate’s) increased around 32% over the latest 10-year cycle (from 2005–2006 to 2016–2017).

The largest increase was achieved by Latinos as the number of college degrees awarded to the U.S. Latino population increased by 70% during the same 10-year cycle. This is saying that 70% more Latino students in college managed to earn a college degree from 2005 to 2017. This is in stark comparison with the rise of degrees awarded to other groups (Caucasians increased by 19% during that same 10-year cycle, for example). The rise of college degrees awarded to Latinos is quite an accomplishment, driven mainly by population changes. But Latino students that earned a college degree only comprised 5% of the total degrees awarded during 2005-2006.

Unfortunately, with the dismantling of the Department of Education as well as DEI programs, obtaining a higher education could be challenging for many. This is why I often urge students to apply for scholarships - a list can be found on our education page. I also urge them to stay focused on their catalog to complete their graduation goals on time. Now more than ever a higher education is important, as such let us always strive for higher education, and let us always support one another. So, a big congratulations to the Class of 2026!

I want to wish all the men who are blessed to be fathers and take pride in their role as dads. I especially wish a Happy Father's Day to my daddy, Joe Martinez! I love you! And of course Happy Father's Day to my darling husband, Frank Garcia!

Internationally recognized for his work in plant genomics and biotechnology, he was named one of Scientific American’s 100 Most Influential People in Biotechnology in 2015. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. In 2024, he was elected to the European Molecular Biology Organization.

Before joining Texas Tech, Herrera-Estrella served as director of the National Laboratory of Genomics for Biodiversity (LANGEBIO) in Guanajuato, Mexico, where he helped build one of Latin America’s premier plant genomics research centers.

Graduation is an Education Milestone

MONSTROCITIES THAT THREATEN OUR WAY OF LIFE

Data centers take energy, more energy than thousands of households, increasing energy costs while overburdening grids.

Data centers take water for cooling, more water than exists in many locales, increasing water conflicts, costs and shortages. Data centers take land that could be used for farming, housing or less resource-intensive industries. Data centers take money, having not yet demonstrated profitability — more like financial bubbles than secure investments.

Data centers won’t hire enough fulltime employees to make them long term contributors to healthy economies because data centers, ultimately, take jobs from human workers, jobs that support families and communities, jobs that are less costly in natural resources and only look like a greater expense on quarterly spreadsheets, jobs that anchor civilization.

Data centers force-feed the risk of sentient artificial intelligence that might vanquish human supremacy. Data centers purvey a product that at best mitigates the need for actual human contact, and at worst addicts victims to antisocial behavior. So, why are we considering permitting these resourcesucking monstrosities that threaten our way of life and life itself?

s we embark on Father's Day June 21, 2026, Latino Lubbock Magazine is proud to showcase recipients of the 10th Annual “Adelante Awards" recognition program, is an initiative of Los Hermanos Familia, whose objective is strengthening families and building community, was established in 2008 to showcase Hispanic men and youth in the Lubbock community. The 2026 recipients include: ARTS Alejos Anaya is the Orchestra Director at Lubbock High School and a lifelong musician who has dedicated more than 18 years to developing and inspiring young artists. As a conductor, educator, and performer, he has helped shape the musical landscape of Lubbock through his work with the Lubbock Youth Orchestras, Lubbock Symphony, and community ensembles.

Passionate about making music accessible to all, he creates opportunities for students and musicians of every background to grow, perform, and succeed. Alejos’s impact is seen not only in the excellence of his programs, but in the generations of students he continues to inspire.

BUSINESS/ ENTREPRENEUR Gilbert Arredondo impacted the Lubbock community through both public safety and community development.

With a distinguished career in law enforcement, he built trust while protecting the community.

After retiring, he continued his service as a home builder and real estate broker, investing over 20 years

in developing affordable housing in North and East Lubbock. His work has expanded access to homeownership and strengthened neighborhoods. He is also a member of the West Texas Home Builders Association.

Beyond his profession, Gilbert is committed to mentorship and philanthropy, guiding young men through his initiative, Father to the Fatherless, and supporting organizations that uplift families across the community.

Flores was recognized for his dedication over two decades that improved the lives of others through leadership, service, and community involvement.

Born in Slaton, Texas, Flores He was raised by his grandparents, and overcame early educational segregation to build a successful Lubbock auto-parts business, Gilbert's Auto Supply, before enter-

ing local politics.

Flores has represented northeast Lubbock County on and off for the past 24 years as a Democrat.

Since being elected in 1993, he has worked to strengthen infrastructure, support economic growth, and advocate for the needs of Lubbock County residents.

He was re-elected in 1996 and 2,000. Flores assumed office again in 2017. He left office on December 31, 2024.

In response to the influx of ARPA funds totaling $60 million, Flores outlined strategic allocations during his reelection announcement. Recognizing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on local businesses, he earmarked over $10 million to support small businesses in Lubbock County.

Flores shared that 175 businesses

applied for assistance, each receiving support ranging from $20,000 to $50,000, demonstrating his commitment to mitigating the economic repercussions of the pandemic.

He supported improved roads like North University, and East Lubbock associated with the arrival of Leprino Cheese, which created employment opportunities.

A proud Lubbock native with deep community roots, Gilbert has served on numerous local and state boards and continues to support organizations that impact education, health, and community development. His legacy reflects a lifelong commitment to public service and the betterment of the Lubbock community.

He is married to Kathy Flores.

Although summer is a time they can relax, reading can also help them unwind.

When planning summer activities with children, remember to leave some time in their schedules for reading. Some convenient times may be before bedtime or over breakfast.

Use books to break the boredom.

Without the regular school regimen, adults and kids need more activities to fill the hours. So read aloud, and be a storyteller, tell them about your familia and growing up.

Combine summer activities with books, and let them know that reading is an important part of your life.

Lubbock, Texas - Today (May 4), Mark Llanas announced this will be his final year as head baseball coach at Lubbock Independent School District’s (Lubbock ISD) Estacado High School (EHS). Llanas has led the program at EHS for the past 16 years since becoming head coach during the 2010-2011 season.

“Coach Llanas has been more than a coach at Estacado High School.

He has been a pillar of leadership, a mentor, and a champion for our students and community,” said Dr. Angelica Wilbanks, EHS principal.

“For more than two decades, he has built a legacy defined not only by wins and championships, but by the lives he has impacted and the standard of excellence he has set.

We are incredibly grateful for his dedication to Estacado and wish him and his family continued success and fulfillment in this next chapter.”

Under Llanas’ leadership, the Matadors achieved 14 playoff appearances, including three District Championships, eight BiDistrict Championships, six Area Championships, and three Regional Quarterfinal appearances. In total, he has 296 career wins, and, over the years, saw several of his players achieve numerous All-City and AllState honors.

Llanas has dedicated the past 23 years to coaching at EHS, including serving as an assistant pitching coach for the seven years prior to becoming head coach. He is a 2003 graduate of Lubbock Christian University, where he earned his degree in physical education and was a pitcher for the Chaparrals baseball team.

He and his wife, Valerie, have been married for 17 years and have three sons: Royceton, Nolan, and Lennon.

In addition to coaching at EHS, Llanas currently teaches Advanced Placement World History and AVID courses.

“I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to coach the sport I love for so many years and will always cherish the time I’ve spent leading and mentoring numerous generations of students at Estacado,” said Llanas. “I look forward to continuing teaching and supporting the Matadors as Valerie and I spend more time supporting our sons in their academic and athletic pursuits.”

Davila Receives Silver Eagle Award for 73 Years of Service mbitious, bright, to rest. His roommate in the hospital, a shoe repairman from San Antonio, had a different A courageous, idea. He wanted to teach his fellow patients determined,

energetic, fearless, generous, and hardworking. Those are the descriptive words attributed to this year’s Silver Eagle Award winner given

by Los Hermanos Familia (LHF) about Frank Davila.

For nearly seven decades Davila has repaired shoes for customers across West Texas and Eastern New Mexico.

Davila, 94, still uses pen and paper in his shoe repair shop on Auburn Street, just east of North University. The machines inside are also younger than their operator. Davila says his cash register was probably made in the 1940s.

“As long as it works, it’ll do the job,” Davila said.

The 94-year-old cobbler is an expert when it comes to lining and insoles. The machinery is now an extension of his craft. He’s been repairing shoes since the 1950s, but his story begins much earlier.

He was born outside of Laredo in 1933, the son of Mexican immigrants. For several years, his family traveled to New Deal to work the harvest, and in 1942, decided to stay.

“My mother would cry, we’re going to freeze to death, no,” he joked.

Davila says his parents often pulled him out of school to work, and eventually took him out for good after the 4th grade. At 17, he, his mom and one of his sisters became sick with tuberculosis. They were sent to a hospital near San Angelo for treatment.

“I got there, and I wanted to write my dad that I had got there, I went on the bus, that I got there all right. And I had to ask somebody to write me a letter. Man, I was so ashamed. So, when they would write me, I would copy the letters, and I started reading papers, books in Spanish,” Davila said.

Davila says much of his treatment was only

his trade, so they could bring it home after they healed.

He also connected Davila with a business owner in Lubbock, who gave him his first job in the industry.

“I worked 10 years for him, and I never asked for a raise. Every time I learned a little bit more, he would pay me more,” Davila said.

Davila took over Frank’s Shoe Repair in 1964, giving it the new name.

“So, altogether, again it’s a blessing. It’s a blessing all the way around,” Davila said.

Customers come from all over the area for Davila’s work. A woman from Muleshoe, picking up boots for her father, said Davila is the best around.

Lubbock musician Junior Vasquez, also a past recipient of the Adelante Awards in the Arts & Entertainment category, has been a customer for more than 34 years.

“When I would come, I didn’t have to question anything, I would look at the boots and they would be better than when I brought them in, coming out, they looked like brand-new boots,” Vasquez said.

Vasquez says he and Davila can relate, and that friendship is what keeps customers coming in.

“He doesn’t want any drama; he doesn’t want any kudos. That’s not the kind of man he is, at least I gather. But, I thought, it’s the perfect time. It’s the middle of Hispanic Heritage Month, and not only one of the oldest businesses in Lubbock, but one of the older gentlemen running a business in Lubbock, but also he’s Hispanic,” Vasquez said.

Davila says he wishes he had just one penny for every customer he’s served over the last 73 years, but he says he doesn’t need any new customers; his current clients keep him pretty busy.

He plans to serve those customers as long as he can get around.

These include protecting the distinctive “grandeur of humanity” amid rapidly changing technology and for the use of AI in warfare to be subject to “the most rigorous ethical constraints.”

While the encyclical focuses on AI, it is a text that goes beyond technological questions and touches on crises facing humanity.

Pope Leo said that the “just war” theory – a four-pronged Christian doctrine stating what conditions justify war – is “now outdated,” saying that military force can only be used for “self-defense in the strictest sense.”

He adds that the “litmus test” for social justice is the treatment of migrants and refugees and offered an apology for the church’s legitimizing in slavery and delay in denouncing the scourge.

The pope, who has made peacemaking a central feature of his pontificate, warns that the use of “force, violence and weapons” ultimately “has disastrous consequences for civilian populations.”

“The construction of a world in a state of perpetual conflict is an evil and must be named for what it is,” the pope writes, adding that, “Humanity possesses far more effective and capable tools for promoting human life and resolving conflicts, such as dialogue, diplomacy and forgiveness.”

His opposition to Just War follows remarks by US Vice President JD Vance that the pope “be careful when he talks about matters of theology” after the Catholic spiritual leader fiercely criticized joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran and rebuked world leaders for invoking religious language to rationalize war.

Pope Leo reiterated that humanity must confront new challenges by “listening” to diverse perspectives and coming to reason, while presenting his manifesto to an audience at the Vatican on Monday.

“Artificial intelligence already touches many areas of our lives

feel entrusted to look upon another huge transformation with eyes of faith, with lucidity of reason, with openness to mystery and with cries of the poor and the earth resounding in my heart.”

Parallels between AI and ‘Tower of Babel’ In the text, the pope also calls for a series of principles to be applied to the development of AI, including a fairer distribution of resources, the dignity of the human person, social justice and care for the environment.

Drawing on a biblical story, the pope warns that with AI, humanity risks building a “Tower of Babel,” which was an attempt for people to “make a name” for themselves with a single power and one language.

The pope says the story is a warning against a plan that “dominates and ultimately dehumanizes,” insisting instead that diverse opinions and groups should contribute to AI’s development.

Leo insists that the technology must protect peoples’ jobs and needs to be subject to “robust legal frameworks, independent oversight, informed users and a political system that does not abdicate its responsibility are required.”

An encyclical is traditionally a letter sent by the pope to the bishops and the wider Roman Catholic Church, but recently it has broadened with Pope Francis using the first encyclical of his papacy to address the whole world on protecting the environment.

Leo XIV’s document on AI, “Magnifica Humanitas” (“Magnificent Humanity”), is being seen as a similarly landmark text for his papacy, and as addressing an epoch-defining topic which he addressed to Catholics and “every person of goodwill.”

Pope Leo has already addressed the topic of AI several times during his year-long papacy, warning against “overly affectionate” chatbots, sending a message to tech execs meeting on AI in the Vatican and urging priests not to use AI when writing their homilies.

Pope Leo has identified AI as a top priority, and he is the first pontiff to personally present an encyclical letter to the world at the Vatican.

South Plains Parishes Prepare for 2026 Jamaica Season

atholic churches in the South Plains area are C now preparing for jamaica season, which are church festivals and the largest fund-raisers for many of the churches.

The first jamaica of the season will start at St. Patrick Catholic Church on June 7, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

According to Rev. Martin Piña, St. Patricks Church, beyond the fund-raising, this is a chance to bring the church community together.

"We start our planning early," he said explaining that the committee identifies music and performers for entertainment.

“The music must be family friendly and cater to individuals that are primary church goers,” he says.

Rev. Piña said that they try to provide entertainment for the established church goers, as well as the young people, and for primary Spanish speakers, keeping in mind Mexican Americans who enjoy the typical Tejano music that is uniquely West Texas.

They strive to make the event family friendly, including activities that allow for the children to have fun; its nonalcoholic; and the bands must abide by the church values presented to them.

He said that the food is always a draw.

“It’s traditional food that they don't get to eat normally like tripas, gorditas, old time delicacies that are unique to an event such as this.”

Rev. Piña added that people go to have fun and

socialize.

“It is a social precedent for families - people come together,” he said there are even some families that have a reunion during the jamaica.

His earliest recollection of attending a jamaica was when he was a child. He recalled that they went to Sacred Heart in Plainview, where they had a small carnival and he enjoyed the rides.

“Jamaicas are fun especially when you are a kid.”

He added that they also have a cultural dimension to them, “a cultural identity of who we are, and a cultural invitation to reconnect with our musical roots and our own traditions, brought about through food and music that we enjoy,” he concluded.

The jamaicas are scheduled over the summer.

Many attendees plan their Sundays accordingly, attending their own church festival and then supporting other churches in the Diocese, reconnecting with families and friends, and having fun.

And while the primary reason for churches is that these festivals are their biggest capital fundraiser used for the physical upkeep and improvement of their church parish, it also gives the church community a chance to work towards growing spiritually and through philanthropy.

he way we treat people says a lot about the condition of our hearts. In a world filled with rushed conversations, frustration, and constant disagreements, genuine kindness can seem uncommon. Yet Scripture reminds us again and again that loving others matters deeply to God. People may not always remember every word we speak, but they often remember how we made them feel.

Philippians 2:3-4 says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” This verse encourages us to think beyond ourselves and care for people sincerely. Treating others with patience, grace, and compassion is not weakness; it is evidence of spiritual growth.

Jesus showed this perfectly throughout His ministry. He noticed people others ignored, showed compassion to the broken, and welcomed those society rejected. Often, the clearest sign of God working through us is revealed dur-

ing inconvenient moments.

A simple encouragement, kind word, or listening ear can completely change someone’s day. Sometimes, even the smallest act of love becomes the very thing God uses to bring hope, healing, and comfort.

People are rarely interruptions to our lives.

Many times, they are the reason God placed us where we are. Every interaction gives us an opportunity to reflect His love, encourage people, and show kindness we receive ourselves today.

At the 10th Annual Adelante Awards Gala, two men were recognized for leadership to youth and for recruitment.

Master Sergeant Misael Gonzales was given the Cadre Mentor Award is a peernominated or unit-level honor presented to outstanding ROTC instructors and cadre members. It recognizes military staff who go above and beyond to shape and guide the careers of future officers.

Gonzales is a Naval Science Instructor at Lubbock High School and a proud Marine Corps veteran with over 20 years of honorable service. Today, he continues his mission by developing the next generation of leaders through the NJROTC program.

Through mentorship, service, and hands-on leadership, he guides his cadets in giving back to the community while instilling values of discipline, integrity, and responsibility. His leadership

Beyond his role as a recruiter, Mike mentors youth, supports future service members, and remains actively engaged in his community.

ave you ever heard that most car acciH dents happen within a few blocks of home? As it turns out, many accidents

happen before you even leave.

Injuries that happen at home account for 21 million medical visits and close to 20,000 deaths each year, according to the Home Safety Council’s 2004 State of Home Security in America. Older adults, who tend to spend more time at home, are at even greater risk. The good news is that by taking a few simple precautions, many of these injuries

can be prevented.

Don’t stop with physical safety; mental and emotional well-being are also part of feeling safe. Clear a cluttered area, create a space for yoga or stretching, learn about feng shui, put up a painting or photograph you love. Do one thing this month that will make you a little happier at home. Getting acquainted with your neighbors can also bring peace of mind. Knowing someone is looking out for you can greatly reduce stress and anxiety.

Rufus U. Rodriguez, a man whose life was marked by unwavering dedication, loyalty, and love, passed away on May 7, 2026, in Lubbock, Texas. Born on July 3, 1947, in Rosebud, Texas, Rufus lived a life that was not only defined by a remarkable career but also by enduring relationships and deep sense of community he cultivated over more than five decades.

For 53 years, Rufus owned and operated a beloved barber business that stood as a cornerstone of the community. More than just a place of work, his barber shop was a welcoming space where friendships flourished and customers became like family.

Rufus’s commitment to handling matters promptly—living by his guiding principle, “handle it today”—earned him the admiration and trust of all who knew him. His steadfast work ethic and genuine care for people defined both his professional and personal life.

Rufus is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Maria Luisa Rodriguez; his eldest son David Alaniz; daughters Veronica Rodriguez, Regina (Jason Martinez) Rodriguez, Lisa (Humberto) Gonzales, and Aurelia Flores; along with his 16 cherished grandchildren; and sixteen greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by five brothers and four sisters.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Crecencia Rodriguez; sister Guadalupe Martinez; brother Pete Rodriguez; and grandson Jonathan Martinez.

Angelita Gutierrez, 80, went to be with the Lord on May 3, 2026. She was born on December 17, 1945, in Poteet, Texas to the late Benselado and Refugia Perez.

Later in life on August 13, 1966, Angelita went on to marry Pedro Gutierrez Sr. in Tahoka cherishing 59 years of a loving marriage. Angelita was a strong and present pillar of the Tahoka community. For many years she served The Senior Citizens Center of Tahoka.

Her commitment to ensuring seniors received nourishment went beyond a job.

A dedicated and faithful Catholic, Angelita was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, where she served as a Guadalupana.

She is preceded in death by her parents Benselado and Refugia Perez; three brothers Pedro Perez, Juan Perez and Benito Perez; and a granddaughter Jenyssa Gonzales.

She is survived by her loving husband Pedro Gutierrez Sr. of Tahoka; two sons Pedro Gutierrez Jr. (Lorena) of Levelland and Oscar Gutierrez (Nanette) of Lubbock; a daughter Rosemary Gutierrez of Lubbock; two sisters Anna Perez of Lubbock and Rosalinda Garcia of Abernathy; 14 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Paz Corona Nombraña, 93, passed away on May 16, 2026. She was born on January 24, 1933, in Bastrop, Texas, to the late Tiburcio Sr. and Matilda Corona. Later in life on December 23, 1959, Paz went on to marry Juan Nombraña cherishing numerous years of marriage.

As a devoted member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Paz was both a dedicated Crusillista and Guadalupana.

She took great pride in making tamales for Our Lady of Guadalupe Jamaicas, an act of love that connected her faith with tradition and family.

She is survived by her sons Miguel (Ruth), Richard (Terry), and Phillip all of Lubbock; daughters, Sylvia Cristan (Carlos), Estella Gomez (Mickey-DCD), Frances Silvas (Raul) and Rosa Beruman (Johnny) all of Lubbock; a host of grandchildren; great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; a brother Tiburcio Corona Jr.; her husband of 67 years Juan; and a sister Tia Gonzales. Children Juanio (Selma), Robert, Sally Frausto and Dolores DeLeon (Sammy-DCD), Ernest (Helen); two granddaughters and two great grandsons.

Roberta Lynn Cu n n e u t u b byJones, affectionately known as Robbie, passed away on May 13, 2026. Born on May 17, 1962, in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, she lived a life marked by devotion to her family, a passion for her craft, and a spirited sense of humor that touched all who knew her.

Robbie was a talented cosmetologist who practiced her profession in the state of Washington. Her dedication to hairstyling was not only a career but a true calling, earning her numerous awards and affirmations that reflected her skill and commitment. Her clients and colleagues admired her for her creativity and the joy she brought to her work.

Beyond her professional achievements, Robbie’s personality shone brightly. She had a big sense of humor and was known for bringing laughter and lightness to every conversation.

Robbie’s love for her family was central to her life. She was married to her best friend, Rodney Cunneutubby-Jones, who survives her and cherishes her memory deeply. She is also survived by her sister, Reta Kay (Pedro) Gonzales-Cunneutubby, her brother, Ricky (Alma) Cunningtubby, . Robbie’s circle of family extended to many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her parents, Clyde Cunningtubby and Martha Huitt Cunningtubby, preceded her in death.

Raymund o “Mundo” G. Guzman Sr., passed away on May 18, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, laughter, and dedication to family. Born on March 16, 1941, in Lockhart, Texas, Ray lived a life enriched by travel, music, and heartfelt connections.

Ray’s career as a truck driver took him across the United States, a journey of which he was especially proud. One of the most enduring memories treasured by those who knew Ray was the tradition of camping every Father’s Day for many years. He cherished having family gathered together, especially when playing Loteria.

Ray was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Armandina V. Guzman; his parents, Manuel and Isabel Guzman; his sister, Celia Carrasco; his brother, Ruperto Guzman; and his sons, Ray Guzman, Jr. and Adam Guzman, his brother-in-law Reyes Pequeno, and his sister-in-law Rosalinda Guzman. The circle of those who survive him is vast and filled with love: his sister Rosa Pequeno; brothers Manuel Guzman (Diana) and Albert Guzman; daughters Silvia G. Rivera, Ester C. Benitez, and Yolanda G. Rivera (Ramiro); sons Adam Guzman (Dianne) and Ruperto Guzman (Carla); and an extensive extended family of 22 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and many great-great-grandchildren.

Daniel Rivera Jr. was born on September 1, 1954, in Nueces County, Texas. He attended Lubbock High School. Daniel worked at Bell Dairy (Gandy’s) for 26 years and later worked for AutoZone for 16 years as a commercial driver.

Daniel loved being a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and took pride in providing for his family.

Some of his favorite memories included fishing after Father’s Day lunch, being a hardcore Cowboys fan, and spending holidays with his grandchildren. He also dearly loved his fur-baby, Sadie Ann. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Mary Helen Rivera; previous marriage, Karen Rivera of 21 years; son Jason Rivera (Maria); daughters Corina Gonzales (Louis), Melissa Vaeza (Alex), Priscilla Gonzales, and Cynthia Garcia; brother Jessie Jalomo (Sandra); 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sons Danny Paul Rivera and Brent Lane Rivera (Valerie); father Manuel Jalomo; mother Apalonina Jalomo; grandfather Pedro Gomez; grandmother Petra Gomez; and son-inlaw Ruben Garcia. Daniel will be remembered for his hard work, love for his family, and the strength he carried throughout his life.

Elva F. Flores, 72, a cherished and devoted member of her community and family, passed away on May 20, 2026. She was born on March 14, 1954, in Mathis, Texas, to the late Domingo and Tomasa Flores. Later in life on December 31, 1974, Elva went on to marry Ricardo V. Florez in Mathis. They had 51 years of a loving marriage.

Elva was a woman of profound faith, drawing strength and comfort from God throughout her journey. Her spirituality was a cornerstone of her being. A woman of many talents and passions, Elva found joy in her love of sewing and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her parents Domingo and Tomasa Flores; a sister Juanita Moreno; brothers Richard Flores and Domingo Flores Jr. Elva is survived by her husband Ricardo V. Florez of Slaton; three sons Ricardo (Mindy) Flores Jr. of Lubbock, John Manuel (Nancy) Flores “Boots” of Slaton, and Daniel "DJ" Jesus Flores of Slaton; a brother Pedro (Adela) Flores of Coleman, TX; a sister Ninfa (Mike Hernandez) Bautista; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, host of nieces and nephews.

Aziyel Zylus DeLeon, known affectionately as "Papacito" and "Fat Fat." Born on November 16, 2025, Aziyel left this world far too soon on May 11, 2026. Though his time was brief, the radiant light he brought to those around him was unmistakable and deeply cherished.

He is lovingly remembered by his devoted parents, Leah Lovington and Christian DeLeon, who treasured every moment with their beloved son. Aziyel’s life was also celebrated by his grandparents: Amber C., Ray L., Chris L., Jacob D., and Juanita T., who held him dearly in their hearts. His extended family, including numerous aunts and uncles also carry the memory of his sweet spirit with them.

Aziyel’s great-grandparents, Linda Rodriguez, David Carrizalez, Juanita Torrez, Jose DeLeon Sr., Eloisa R. Tamez, and Ruben and Diana Lovington, remain steadfast in their love and remembrance.

He was preceded in death by Antonia and Jose Carrizalez.

Lucio Garza Jr., 79, departed this life on May 5, 2026. He was born in Bryan, TX and moved to Lubbock, in 1952. He started to work at Baldridge Bakery in 1964, where he met his wife Natividad Luera and married on December 3, 1965.

In 1967, his first son Abel was born. In 1969, Lucio went to work for McWhorter’s Tire and was one of the best tire man in Lubbock; he worked for McWhorter’s for 42 years and retired. His second son Jesse Joe was born in 1973. He went back to work and started to work for United Supermarkets for 10 years. Lucio loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father Lucio M. Garza Sr, his mother Maria Luisa Garza, his brothers Luis Garza and Jesse Garza, his sisters Mary Jane Perez, Mary Helen Days, and Sara G Carta, his granddaughter Cecily Garza. He is survived by, his wife Natividad Garza, his sons Abel Gabriel Garza (Nancy Bulk), and Jesse Joe Garza Sr, his sisters Mary Louis Bray from Chicago Illinois, Manuela Schaefer from Kentucky, and Teresa Lang from Lubbock, his brothers Esteban Garza from Irving, and Jose Garza Dallas, 11 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and
