With the turf now cut, fundraisers are promising the £6 million building in Bristol Gate, Brighton, will be complete by summer 2015. Hundreds of people attended a special thank you party at the American Express Community Stadium on Tuesday 18 March to mark the start of work. The Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre is the result of close working between two charities: Macmillan Cancer Support and the Sussex Cancer Fund.

n 1979, as a 16-year-old lad, I ran the London Marathon in 3hrs 39 minutes. Officially you have to be 18 years old, so my ‘claim to fame’ is that potentially I am the youngest person ever to have run the London Marathon! “This year is the 25th anniversary of that, and I will be running the Brighton and London Marathon this April to raise funds for two very special children’s charities, Rockinghorse and Great Ormond Street. “My inspiration to do this is my eight-year-old daughter, Mia, who was born with a rare hand condition known as ‘Symbrachydactyly’. hen investing in a property, you are not only buying bricks and mortar, but also the immediate surroundings, which are significantly influenced by your neighbours. Good neighbours can help sell a house and boost its value, whilst bad ones can knock as much as 10% off the price. So when buying, it’s worth enquiring about a seller’s relationship with the neighbours, and sellers should always be transparent when answering a buyer’s inquiries, as an omission can lead to problems. One buyer successfully sued the previous owners of their property for not disclosing long-running problems with neighbours, and were awarded £67,500 in costs and compensation. Although by no means a comprehensively reliable guide, the following pointers might help you avoid future headaches:

How well do the neighbours maintain their property and garden?

Do they have loud parties? A walk-past on a Saturday night might be useful.

Could any bordering hedges be a potential sticking point? If so, investigate.

Find out if the surrounding properties are rented or owneroccupied. If rented, what is the turnover of residents, and are they likely to be as interested in maintaining a good relationship with their neighbours as an owner-occupier might be?

Are the neighbours planning any building work that might interfere with your personal space and privacy? There is nothing to stop you asking them!

he past few months have been very busy for the rental market in Hove and Brighton, with a steady stream of applicants and plenty of rental properties for them to choose from. Despite schemes such as the government’s Help to Buy initiative, allowing firsttime buyers to purchase with just a 5% deposit, the high purchase prices in the area mean even the 5% is still a hefty deposit to raise. As an example, a two bedroom flat in Brunswick Square, Hove, will cost around £500,000 to buy, meaning even with the Help to Buy scheme buyers need a £25,000 deposit plus £15,000 for stamp duty, followed by monthly mortgage repayments of around £2,880. In comparison, a similar property on the rental market will be around £1,800pcm with a deposit of £2,700. So it’s easy to see why for some renting is the preferred and more affordable option. This means that many tenants now view their rented accommodation as their ‘home’, rather than just a stepping stone. The Landlady The Landlady’s selective season & shopping list

O

ne of my long-term lodgers has moved out, leaving me with an empty room. In previous years, I would have been thrown into extreme panic, but this year, just like spring, the foreign student season seems to have commenced a little earlier than usual. Therefore, with a queue of people waiting to move in, I have spent my spare time this week preparing the room for the summer season. This means a splash of white paint, new bedding and a new rug to cover up the tea stains made by previous lodgers, who also seem keen to throw tea at the walls for some reason. While I was about it, I stain-sealed the huge damp patch on The Small Daughter’s bedroom ceiling and painted over it, much to the bewilderment of The Small Daughter, who couldn’t care less that her bedroom ceiling was partially brown and covered in mould spots. She is more concerned with makeup, hair straightening and posting selfies onto Facebook. Oh, to have the time to fritter in such idle pursuits. The Small Daughter is also totally disinterested in the fact that I’ve “I also have to buy used my work bonus this year to a new snorkel and book us a trip to the Seychelles and Dubai. While she is glued to YouTube mask as I left mine on her iPad Mini, I pore over The Lonely Planet and the internet to find on a beach in Cuba” us the best possible accommodation at the best possible prices, confuse myself with inter-island ferry timings and prices and attempt to sort out the Small Daughter’s dishevelled wardrobe, which is half at her dad’s house anyway. I am trying to waylay the inevitable last minute panic over suitable clothing for our trip, but feel that I am fighting a losing battle. The Small Daughter has grown so much over the past year that none of her clothes fit her anyway and I suspect that, on top of all the other expenses concerned with this trip, I will also be in for an entire new wardrobe. I also have to buy a new snorkel and mask as I left mine on a beach in Cuba last month, which although quite annoying, is a problem that I’m sure many people would like to have. The fact that I am going to be away from Landlady Towers for a fortnight has deemed it necessary to select my new lodger with extreme caution. Guitarists are fine as lodgers while I’m here to keep an eye on them, but I would be insane to leave them to their own devices while I’m several thousand miles away, especially as the Big Daughter displays a dogged reluctance to reprimand anyone in my absence. I have got a Japanese girl moving in on Sunday and am hoping she won’t be bringing a guitar with her.

Robert Nemeth on King Alfred indoor Bowls Club

P

hotographs from 1938 show a phenomenal amount of shingle being removed to make way for the foundations and lower levels of Hove Marina – the building that became the King Alfred when it was requisitioned by the Navy during World War II. What lies beneath today is a mystery to many. The area beneath the west side of the site is now completely derelict. It began as a car park and became a ten-pin bowling alley during the 1960s. Space was later found for a Megazone laser game centre which closed in 2004 after a court battle. “The case for a 50m On the east side, not only have Cheetahs Gym and Brighton & Hove pool has thousands Amateur Boxing Club thrived below ground, the King Alfred Indoor Bowls of supporters” Club has done so too for years. It as formed in 1946 and initially occupied part of the old car park on the west side. In around 1960, the car park on the east side was done away with and the bowling club took its place with, initially, four carpeted rinks. I visited recently for a behind-the-scenes tour. A short descent leads down to an expansive bowling area which was a real hive of activity when I visited. The club today has six rinks (two more were added in 1979) and these are framed in a somewhat striking manner by a series of large columns and lintels which hold up what is the outside trampolining area above. There is a spacious restaurant and bar area adjacent to the rinks where club members can relax when not bowling. Food is very much part of the bowling season though and different events come with different dining arrangements. On the club’s fixtures list, most events are either annotated as ‘Meal’ or ‘T&B’ (tea and biscuits!). It is unclear what the fate of the club will be when the King Alfred is redeveloped, whenever that may be. It is unlikely though that Brighton & Hove City Council will be proposing the sort of facility that formed part of the infamous Frank Gehry scheme. Gehry’s general offering offended many but the bowling element, which would have been built as a stand-alone facility beside Hove Park, was incredible. The case for a 50m pool as part of a new King Alfred has thousands of supporters and few opponents.
