Kay Town

Andrew Kay is having a taste of his own medicine

he other day I got home exhausted and sat on a biscuit tin. Needless to say it buckled under my weight and is now of no use whatsoever. Sadly it was not our biscuit tin; our biscuits seldom last long enough to require being kept in an airtight container. We do have a biscuit tin but we use it to keep patent medicines in. Within its depths there are ointments, unguents and unctions, lozenges, pastilles, pills, potions and powders. Having grown up in St Helens, Lancashire (I still refuse to think of it as Merseyside) all ailments were dealt with by the administering of Beecham’s Powders. The local company had a massive red brick building right in the centre of town and for many locals it was the alternative to working for Pilkington Glass. Sir Thomas Beecham, conductor and author of one of the finest and sauciest quotes relating to the cello, was the family’s most famous son, and perhaps the town’s too. I can’t think of many famous names that hail from the place that was once my home. Oh of course, Johnny Vegas, that makes me feel slightly better and of course the much missed Pete McCarthy who might have claimed Warrington as home but went to school in St Helens.

The Right Price

Touch of Luxury

Location, Location, Location!

I digress – as always. The pill tin has been much in demand this week as both “I’m not dead yet of us seem to be harbouring the Sussex though, not quite” collection of viral cold bugs, hacking coughs, runny noses... the works. I know that there is little point going to see the doctor, after all a cold is a cold and not much can be done, although I do feel that sometimes they like telling you off for wasting their time. Maybe that’s how they get their kicks, berating us for worrying about our health. I seem to remember an equal number of occasions when I have been told off for not coming to the doctor sooner. You can’t win, can you? So a tin full of patent remedies has to be the answer, surely? Even if I do mix and match them with an alarmingly liberal approach. After all, what harm can it do? Probably more than I think, especially as I never ever check the best before dates. I’m not dead yet though, not quite.

Nicola, who started her career with Hamptons International in December 2008, has been working as a letting agent in and around Brighton and Hove for the last 10 years. Swimming pool, gymnasium and tennis courts are seldom standard to a modern development. It also happens to lie in one the prettiest valleys in Sussex right on the edge of the new national park with rural vistas on all sides. For me, it is not only a personal achievement but evidence of our professionalism as an agency, showing our clients that they are dealing with someone who is knowledgeable and who they can trust to do a good job.” Karen Standing, Regional Director at Hamptons International who works alongside Nicola said: “We could not be more proud of Nicola’s achievement. The Landlady The Landlady battles with modern technology

Robert Nemeth enjoys a Regency weekend

Illustration: Jake McDonald

f there is one thing as sure as Christmas arriving on 25 December, it is the depressing fact that by mid-October I will be in receipt of a wailing call from one of my tenants, claiming that their boiler is broken. I thought I’d got away with it this year, as by 14 October nothing had happened and the Landlady Towers Empire appeared to be functioning like a slick machine. On 15 October, I received an email from my wonderful letting agent in Hastings claiming that the tenant in mine and Katy’s flat had no heating or hot water. In spite of the fact that these tenants are rather sporadic with their rent payments – in fact, they haven’t paid the rent for three months – they have a small child, and there was a brisk north-easterly whipping along the coast lending an undesirable chill factor. Heavy hearted (because I know that this particular boiler is the Lazarus of the central heating world), I called my Hastings plumber and awaited the bad news with chequebook at the ready. Ideally, I’d switch off the boiler and emigrate for the winter, and I am suffering from heat envy having just received a text from a good friend who’s off to the Caribbean tomorrow. Even my own family members are off gallivanting and The Big Son has just returned from Turkey, where he spent a week with his girlfriend. In the pub last Thursday while he was away, I was having a drink with a couple of girls The Big Daughter went to school with. One of them asked if The Big Son was any better, as she’d heard via Facebook that he was really ill. As I don’t – and will never – ‘do’ Facebook, this was the first I’d heard about it, so I texted him immediately to ask if he was okay. Fool that I am, I actually expected a reply “Fool that I am, I actually to my concerned missive, but my phone remained silent for expected a reply to my the rest of the week. I assumed he was either not as concerned missive...” ill as we first imagined, or that he was so ill he couldn’t even lift his texting finger, in which case his girlfriend would probably get in touch, so I left well (or rather ill) alone. On Sunday morning while having a lie-in, my sleep was rudely disturbed by two text messages coming through at once. It was the miraculously resurrected Big Son, his first text asking why The Big Daughter was not at work and the second urging me to go to her bedroom to make sure she was alive. The Big Daughter’s boss had texted him to ask why his sister wasn’t at work. When they were babies, I used to check they were still alive all the time. I didn’t expect to have to do it in in their mid-twenties. You will be delighted to know that The Big Daughter was indeed still very much alive, had overslept and was very indignant when I went into her room to check that she was still breathing. That’s scare-mongering modern technology for you.

s a committee member of the Regency Society, some years ago, I wondered how we would celebrate the bicentenary of the Regency period. Regency Society Weekend, which celebrated the 200th anniversary of the end of the first year of the Regency era, was all that I imagined and more. Regency Society Weekend brought together some of the finest speakers in the country including Sir Simon Jenkins and Dan Cruikshank. I attended the talk of my friend Jackie Marsh-Hobbs to see what she had to say about the origins of the Regency Society and conservation of the Royal Pavilion. The story begins in 1850 when Queen Victoria sold the Royal Pavilion to the people of Brighton. But everything was removed from within, much of which was put in storage in the basement of Kensington Palace or installed in the new east wing of Buckingham Palace which was completed that same year. Chandeliers were even taken, as evidenced by the distinctive chandelier from the Pavilion’s “Regency Society Music Room which can be seen to this day behind members of the Weekend was all that royal family when they stand on I imagined and more” the famous Buckingham Palace balcony while waving to the public. Some chandeliers were returned during the 1860s but many are replacements. The Pavilion gradually fell into disrepair. Muddy bronze-coloured paint soon covered gold leaf. The entrance hall doors were painted corporation green. An ambitious group called the Regency Festival Committee ran a series of successful events – Regency Exhibitions – from 1946. These public displays demonstrated to visitors just how special the Pavilion could be with the right furniture in place. The Regency Society was formed the year before, and shared members with the Festival Committee, and also contributed photographs and other items to the exhibitions. The legacy of the Regency Exhibitions was a restored Royal Pavilion. They carried on until the 1970s until the Pavilion provided all-year-round complete exhibitions of its own, as it does to this day. When the Regency Festival Committee disbanded in 1957, its profits of £4,480 were given to the Regency Society and used to purchase various items which exist in the Pavilion until this day, such as the carpet in the Banqueting Room and a bust of George IV. It may have lasted for just several days, but Regency Society Weekend captured the magic of those influential Regency Exhibitions of old. The current committee should be very proud indeed. Distracted Dad

Mama Malone

Richard Hearn appreciates eccentricities

Malone is very grateful, honestly...

Illustration: Paul Lewis

o I finally managed to write Daughter’s thank you cards. Two months late, not bad Malone, getting better. I don’t know what’s wrong with me; the weeks slip by, suddenly it’s nearly Christmas and angry aunties all over the UK are scrubbing us off the Next voucher list. I can’t wait til she’s old enough to do this herself and I can blame Daughter for the tardiness: “I know, I’m sorry Uncle Freddy, she’s just a terrible teenager.” Instead what happens is I come up with grand plans of making video cards, or taking photos of her using said birthday present (a keyboard, or a new dress) but then “Mother denies the equation of taking photo + putting me food, making me photo onto computer + getting annoyed at printer + finding an envelope + emailing mother for yearly hoover in exchange “what’re our relatives’ addresses for gruel” again?” conversation + procuring a stamp (where are those 17 stamp books I bought when they were cheap?) + remembering to take letters out of handbag when walking past a postbox and not carrying them for a week until they are dog-eared and covered in biscuit and lip balm = two month late thank you cards. It’s not a pleasing sum. In future, I’ll use the more traditional approach: buy card, get child to scribble “fank you unkle Feddi” and go to the post office, buy stamp and post at the very same time. Much more efficient, and this sum can result in a two week turnaround, thus resulting in a secured Next voucher for next year. And best of all, the thank you card vulture doesn’t sit on your shoulder for months reminding you every time you check your email: “Argkk Argkk! Stop looking at Groupon and make thank you cards, you distracted mess of a woman!” I can imagine my naughty 13-year-old writing thank you letters... “Dear Aunty Dawn, thanks for the Marks & Spencer vouchers, have bought food with them as Mother denies me food, making me hoover in exchange for gruel.” Hmm, maybe I should always be in charge of thank you cards. I am seriously considering starting my Christmas ones now; imagine my relatives’ shock... would it be cheating if I sent thank yous ready-made in their Christmas cards? “Thank you for the Next vouchers!” Don’t get me wrong, I am very grateful, I just have a long to-do list every day and the thank you cards are at the bottom. Someone has just reminded me about online card sending stores. Why had I forgotten about them? I remember one having the most evil, annoying theme tune, it’s like I just wiped it from my mind like a bad experience. Great, so now I’ve just accidentally written an advert for online card stores; I'm possibly stupid as well as disorganised and ungrateful! Dear relatives, instead of vouchers this Christmas, please send booklets of stamps, envelopes and many more hours in the day.

wo bananas and a dinosaur stuffed in an ambulance. No, not a headline about the demise of the NHS, but Youngest™ playing, eccentrically. A few days earlier, the same objects were in the ambulance too. There’s a pattern developing, I just wish I knew what it meant. I used to think the word eccentric applied to old people. If so, my two kids have really started putting in their apprenticeships early. The Boy used to be like it, and Youngest™, well, Youngest™ is in a different league. Let’s start from memory with The Boy. His top three eccentricities were: 1) he always had to open the door of the microwave when it pinged. Even if engrossed in some toy or game, or virtually “He hasn’t quite got the asleep; 2) he seemed to hate crossing idea that mood and species thresholds like going in are mutually exclusive” or out of our front door, as if allergic to a lintel; 3) he very much enjoyed wearing stripes, whether hats, T-shirts, trousers or socks. Dressed crazily, I sometimes wondered, if he were to walk near a supermarket‘s till, would they think he was a set of barcodes and charge us £54.71? Youngest™ shares the stripy theme, and will often meticulously name the colours involved. He does this colour naming thing with other stuff, too. Late for an appointment the other day, he insisted on pressing the pay and display button. “Not blue.” “No, not blue. We’re in a hurry.” “Not red,” he says, wagging his finger. “No, not red, come on, hurry up.” “Green. I press green.” His other eccentricities are also accompanied by a wag of the finger. On the school run this week he insisted we took up two toy plates, and some plastic cheese and peas – these I was to carry – while he carried Noddy, PC Plod and Big Ears. Then he went loopy up at the school when he realised he wasn’t wearing his stripy hat. Youngest™’s eccentricity is not just confined to objects. If we mistakenly call him by another pet name, “How are you, monkey?” or that sort of thing, he will answer: “I not monkey, I baby tiger!” (I think tiger is in line with the stripy preference). He is most insistent. Trouble is, if you ask “are you playing/happy/hungry?” he will also answer “I not playing, I baby tiger.” He hasn’t quite got the idea that mood and species are mutually exclusive. But there are layers to his understanding of self. While watching Toy Story, he bustled off to find a cowboy hat. “Are you Woody?” asked The Boy. “No!” shouted Youngest™. “Are you a baby tiger pretending to be Woody?”. Youngest™ nodded. His eccentricity means he is an enigma wrapped inside a puzzle wrapped inside a conundrum. Wearing something stripy.

Inner space Richard Hill Interiors use their magic touch to make your clutter...disappear!

happy home is a home with sufficient storage space. How many family rows could be avoided if there were somewhere to actually put those discarded clothes and toys? Or a place to shut all that stress-inducing clutter away and out of sight? At this time of year, the ratio of stuff to storage can reach a critical tipping point; you simply run out of space. But overflowing cupboards and drawers don’t mean you need to move – you simply need to call in the professionals. Richard Hill Interiors have been providing bespoke storage and furniture to Brighton and Hove

since 1994. Working with a wide range of clients, they’ve transformed people’s homes and businesses with fabulous, functional extra space.

Don’t move, improve You might already have enough space – you just aren’t using it right. “Most people don’t realise that the right storage can almost double their usable space,” says Richard, “so they think they need to move when space gets tight. A bit of lateral thinking can save them space, and money. Why move when a simple redesign can solve the problem?” Older-style properties simply weren’t designed to cope with multi-tasking modern life, and new-builds rarely include sufficient storage. Clutter can start to mount up, and then chaos ensues. But you don’t need a big home to be organised, all you need is to be smart with the space you’ve got – which is where Richard Hill Interiors can help. And improving your home now will be an investment for the future. Plentiful, well-designed and stylish storage will give your home the edge in any market.

Make space for your life Lifestyle change often prompts people to sort out their storage. Clients often come to Richard after a new baby, starting to work from home, a house move or another significant life event. “Every home has ‘Cinderella’ spaces,” Richard says, “Under the stairs, over doors, attics, awkward corners that people usually ignore, or even room at the end of the garden for an office-come-occasional spare room. Identifying and using the space in your home correctly can change your life.”

Expert intelligence Richard Hill Interiors offer a full service from a free quotation through to design, planning, construction, and fitting. Working with your ideas, or bringing their own skills and experience to bear, they can help you to make the most of your space. Sometimes, size really does matter. Latest Interiors seeks out storage solutions to sort out your surroundings

t’s that time of year when things start to feel a little bit crowded; Halloween costumes, party clothes, Christmas presents and decorations all vie for storage space with the usual school stuff, sports kit, and household detritus. You may feel like you’ve run out of space altogether – but don’t panic, Latest Interiors is here to help with our handy guide to spot-on storage.

Spot the space The average home has a surprising amount of under-used and un-used space. Neglected walls, corners, under-the-stairs and over-the-doors are all areas that can be put to good work. If you’re drowning in clutter, take a good look at your home, and think creatively about any un-used space. But before you get carried away, remember that however much storage space you make, it will only work if you use it properly – so start by having a good sort out.

Clear it out If you haven’t used or worn something for more than two years, put it into long term storage, sell it, or give it away. Car boot sales, ebay, gumtree, Friday Ad and vintage fairs will all allow

you to make a few bob from your unwanted gear. If you can’t face the hassle of selling, or want to put the cash to better use, then there are charity shops aplenty in Brighton and Hove – and many will come and collect. Giving your unwanted stuff away feels really good. Freecycle is another great place for getting rid of unwanted stuff. If the thought of this overwhelms you, call in a professional. A space therapist or professional property ‘stylist’ will perform miracles with your possessions, pruning away unwanted stuff and reorganising you and your home.

Make the room Are you making the most of your high ceilings? Fabulous floor-toceiling shelves or cupboards make use of the inches or feet overhead. A mixture of open shelves and closed boxes or units works best. Things you like or need to access can be left ‘on show’, while the rest is shut tidily away. Under-the-stairs cupboards can be fitted out with mix-and-match storage units to maximise space. A pull-out drawer for shoes, a tall cupboard for clothes or cleaning equipment, smaller drawers and even a low unit for stowing the hoover away can be fitted beneath

Two into one

Two generations – one house

rchitects have been influenced by market forces and have, at last, designed homes for those who are looking for a family home which can accommodate more than one generation, without the feeling of living in each other’s pockets. With today’s changing society, families are, either by choice or need, having to adapt their living accommodation to create effectively two households in one. This is fine provided the accommodation can be divided, so each has their own space. The new homes at Ovingdean Place, arranged over three levels, provide the perfect solution. As the properties are built in an elevated location, the skilful architects have designed the homes so one level could accommodate a virtually self-contained living space with kitchen and bathroom facilities whilst providing ample family living space on the remaining two levels. This flexible approach will appeal to couples with older children still at home or with a elderly parent to accommodate. The location also offers a balance between rural and urban life, as it is situated on the edge of the South Downs, close to the sea and yet a short distance from the bustle of Brighton city life. Ovingdean has a thriving community and offers lots of local activities for all ages. The homes are built to the highest standards and incorporate many luxury features, as well as sustainable construction which creates a comfortable and economical living environment for all. The beautiful show home is open at weekends from 11am – 4pm, and prices are from £649,950 to £825,000. For full details call Mishon Mackay New Homes on 01273 829300

THE NO 1 PROPERTY WEBSITE FOR BRIGHTON What inspired you to start the company Shutterly Fabulous? “We were looking for shutters for our own house and very few companies sold them. After spending time in the USA, we saw how popular shutters were. We believed the trend would happen in the UK and took the plunge.”

outstanding customer service. The marketplace has become a lot busier with many more shutter companies to choose from. Having our own manufacturing and directly employed staff, who we can train and share our ‘service first’ ethos, makes us stand out. Our number one source of business is recommendation, we never take that for granted. Two years ago we started an apprentice scheme to train our own Installation Technicians. It’s working very well, our customers can be safe in the knowledge that their shutters are being installed by a trained craftsman who cares.”

How quickly did it take off? “It was pretty amazing to get a sale in our very first week. It doesn’t always work that way with advertising! Our very first ad was in Latest Homes. We got a call days later and a sale that very first week. The business grew steadily from that point. It certainly felt reassuring that people were looking for the product. Shutters were still an unknown product as a window covering.” Shutterly Fabulous has been a regular advertiser in Latest Homes for years. “Latest Homes has been a great platform. We started the business with a bag of samples, a £400 website and our ad in Latest Homes. After that call in the first week, I think we’ve advertised in nearly every issue since! Brighton & Hove is our home and our staff all live in the area. We want to be recognised as the ‘go to’ shutter company for the city. Latest Homes is picked up by everyone and our regular presence has been a key part of our strategy to be known as THE shutter company of Brighton & Hove.”

Supplying and fitting a quality product must be very satisfying, but with that quality level do you find that customers come to you just the once? “Shutters do last a lifetime if you look after them – it could be assumed customers are a one off visit. But people move, extend and add shutters. Last week I got an email from one of our office team who had been out with our Installation team. The customer, Liz Gunn, said, ‘I was your first bay window customer 10 years ago.’ She has moved three times since then. We love that.”

Did you imagine that Shutterly Fabulous would grow as it has? “We knew we would work extremely hard to make the business a success but never envisaged so much would have happened in 10 years. The changes at our manufacturing facility are fantastic. The team we now have in the UK and the US are superb and the investment we have made during a recession has helped us grow. We’re proud of where we are now. At this 10th birthday it’s made us think, ‘Wow – that’s been quite a Shutterly Fabulous 10 years – who knows what the next 10 years will hold!’”

Do you believe in strong marketing, advertising and editorial? “We had marketing experience from previous jobs but it’s very different when From a simple start in Brighton and it’s your own business. We’ve spent large Hove you now have a nationwide sums on campaigns that haven’t worked business. Do you see it going even and small amounts that had fantastic further afield, a global presence? Shutterly Fabulous celebrate ten years results. We continually push our spend “I don’t know about global but I’m sure ideas to grow the company, without there’ll be additions to the group in the at the top of the shutter and blind market being ‘uncontrolled’. You need to think coming 10 years! We opened The Shutter before you spend and ask if the advert or Store in the USA in 2009 and that is going editorial is in the right place for your business and likely to bring a return.” extremely well. We have partnerships in Holland and France and we’re working on a larger operation in the French market.” Does that need, to re-affirm your brand through a press presence, continue? “Yes, 100 per cent. We advertise in key publications all the time. We know that You manufacture abroad, how does that affect prices and delivery times? our audience, while not buying shutters today, will have comfort through brand “When we launched in 2002, we manufactured in Canada. In 2005 we made the recognition when they do decide to purchase shutters. This and a focus on decision to partner with a Chinese manufacturer with whom we have worked strong PR ensures our name is bubbling along both locally and nationally.” exclusively ever since. We could not be cost effective if we manufactured in Europe. While price is a factor, quality is too.” The trend for shutters and blinds is strong, have you spotted new products? “We are ‘shutter mad’ but we’re always looking around, making sure we keep Have technological advancements changed what you do and how you do it? abreast of the latest trends. Working exclusively with Kelly Hoppen and B&Q “There’s been continual investment to speed up and improve production. Every (via our sister company, The California Shutter Co) we regularly discuss new product is custom made, a large proportion of that work being undertaken by products. Shutters have a long way to go. People are moving away from whites skilled craftsmen and women. Our policy of employing our own staff is and towards larger slat sizes. We’ve extended our range of colours to include something that we believe in. It comes with challenges but it ensures consistent greys and blacks as people see the stunning effects these can create. Curtain levels of service and the same customer experience. fabrics are rarely pure white therefore why should shutters be?” As we expand we work hard to find the right people and bring them here for months of training at our Brighton HQ, before we ‘let them loose’. hether you are the minimalist type or find that you like to hoard anything and everything, storage is a vital necessity in any house. Winter is fast approaching and you should probably start tucking away all those summer clothes you rarely got a chance to wear, the deckchairs you sat in once in that brief week in July and basically anything that reminds you of the long gone sunny months. Indoors or outdoors, functional or stylish, use storage to your advantage in every room of your house. Your bathroom may benefit from a cupboard fitted with a mirror to minimise wasting valuable room. Maybe your kitchen would look just a little smarter with a place to hang the utensils or stash your much needed condiments. Make your bedroom a more calming place by reducing your clutter with the help of bedside tables, a chest of drawers or a more decorative item like a dressing table. Simple units such as cupboards and shelves are perfect as a space saving solution for any room. You might find you need to display your favourite things or simply have a place to chuck useless items that don’t belong anywhere else. While you can buy pieces of almost any shape or size, from flatpack to more exquisite, bespoke storage is also an option. Make full use of any nook and cranny that might look like it is shouting out to be good for something. Definitely a good idea when limited for space, find a professional who can not only fit your specifications but advise you on the best way to choose. Who knows, with all the space you will save, you could be fully prepared for some early Christmas shopping as you will have plenty of places to hide everything from the rest of the family. hen I decided to retire in the UK, Brighton seemed to be the ideal area to live, by the sea and in a thriving town. This building gives me a panoramic view of the coast and is a very well maintained property. More importantly, it is a very safe and secure place to live. This apartment is very quiet and the position of the block gives you quick access to the beach, social and cultural activities and shopping.

e have lived here for over 12 years and this house has proved to be an excellent family home for us. When we first moved in we found that the studio/playroom gave us useful extra space on the ground floor. We have recently extended into the roof space and have been amazed both by the ease with which the staircase has fitted onto the first floor landing and the amount of space in our new main bedroom on the second floor.
