ifty six years old and for most of those years I have been a fan of Coronation Street. My memories of the early years are sparse, the student years scant, despite the mad rush each week in the halls of residence to get a seat for every episode, and my early 30s were dented by my commuting habits. Over the years there has never been any doubt that Corrie is about strong northern women, women like my mother, who, having just reached 80 is as feisty as ever. Woe betide anyone who gets on the wrong side of Ivy! Earlier this year I went off to Eastbourne to see Sister Act. In the foyer we bumped into an old friend and he was there to see his friend who was appearing in the show. Kindly he wangled us a lift back to Brighton with her if we were happy to go for a drink with the cast after. “She stormed her Well, I was up for that, especially when I saw that way through the show his friend was none other than Denise Black, actress as Mother Superior, and chanteuse, one-time lover of Ken Barlow on the whipped off her wimple Street and a star of Queer As and joined us for a pint” Folk, the iconic gay drama that changed people’s perceptions of not only gay life but what you could get away with on TV. Denise stormed her way through the Sister Act as Mother Superior, whipped off her wimple and joined us for a pint. There and then we became mates and now frequently exchange messages as she tours the show around the UK, but that tour is nearly over and she will be back in her adopted and much loved Brighton very soon. As well as a career as an actress Denise is also a well respected jazz singer with her own band Denise Black’s Loose Screw, a name which might give you an indication of the lady’s sense of humour. With a new album, Kiss The Joy, Denise has chosen to launch it at our very own Latest Musicbar on Thursday 15 November. No doubt it will be a riotous evening of music and humour with her usual mix of guests and ribaldry. I am now going to relax and listen to the new album.

t is now a week since I arrived back from the sunny isle of Ibiza and here in Brighton we seem to be in the throes of weather fashioned specifically for the misery of autumn. Autumn is my least favourite season as it heralds not only the onset of bad weather, but also serves to set off the alarm bells that indicate Christmas is imminent. It is not a season of hope or joy as far as I’m concerned. I was due to go back to Cuba in two weeks’ time for a further injection of sunshine, but since acquiring The New Boyfriend I have chosen to cancel my trip as The Old Boyfriend is sure to be lurking around Old Havana. At least we had a fine old time in Ibiza and on our first night, even though we didn’t set foot in a nightclub, didn’t get home until 6.30am. Our flight arrived at around 11pm and after a few drinks in our hotel bar – where we were the only occupants – decided that we were starving and went out in search of food. At 3am, rather disgruntled at finding nothing serving anything “Autumn sets off the food-like open, my friend N and I began to regret our alarm bells that indicate decision to stay in a peaceful place, several Christmas is imminent” kilometres from the fleshpots and KFCs of San Antonio. As we walked around the harbour in the hope of seeing an open kebab shop for the umpteenth time, we were lured into a two-seater red sports car by an Argentinian who claimed to be out on a hunt for food too. In fact, we fear he was more an opportunist hunter of stray women, who had cleverly blinded us with mention of food. With N and I crammed into the front seat of the sports car – N sitting on my lap – he took us to a bar where there was actually no food at all, only beer, which was fair enough. He then tried to persuade us to let him sail us in his yacht – ahem – to the neighbouring island of Formentera. Sadly, we were so desperate for a kebab that we simply had to turn down his offer and make him drive us back to our hotel – this time with me on N’s lap – where N and I made do with the Eat Natural cereal bars I’d had the foresight to bring with me. Although our 6.30am home time was only half an hour before breakfast at the hotel began, we were too tired and weak to wait and probably would have frightened people at the breakfast buffet anyway. The following night, we continued to show Ibiza how it was done and, even though we’d booked € 45 tickets for Space Nightclub, we didn’t even manage to get there until 4am yet were quite glad we’d spent the evening filling our boots in Ibiza town when we realised that a bottle of beer in Space was € 12. At least you can’t accuse me of not getting out much...

basement can give so much away about a building’s past. As principal floors are refurbished and redecorated, lower areas are often not used to their potential, or are simply forgotten. One such example is the basement of the Metropole Hotel where new services, such as boilers, have been added without removing old equipment. The old features – usually unglamorous – survive as the upper areas change as quickly as fashions change. In the case of Brighton Town Hall, its basement presents all sorts of clues about the classical structure’s history and, in particular, it contains the Old Police Cells Museum, which is accessed from the building’s attractive foyer. I recently met with Trustee Phil Mason for an up to date tour. The main attraction of the museum is a collection of 13 disused police cells, which divides up as eight for men and five for women. Spread amongst and around the cells is a variety of different exhibits. I was more curious about “The main attraction the fabric of the building itself though, including all sorts of inscriptions that had been added to of the museum is a the cells over the years. “THE COPS collection of 13 HERE ARE FAT *****” was one inspired case in point but another, disused police cells” “DAVE THE ROCKER 8TH JUNE 1964”, does capture the imagination. It was written not long after the so-called Battle of Brighton that was fought by Mods and Rockers on 17–18 May. No doubt of great interest to a delegation from Subterranea Britannica, whom I bumped into whilst looking around, is the sub-basement. This contains the parquet-floored police clothing store (where ‘capes’ and ‘breeches’ were kept) and old toilets but also, outside the confines of the museum, various boiler rooms that give away much about how the building was put together. o you think it could be psychological?” Yes, Doctor, I think my inability to breathe properly is all in my mind. That’s why I waited 45 minutes in your waiting room because I’m desperate to talk to a man about mucous. It’s just in my head that I was suddenly awoken choking a few days ago, gasping desperately for my next breath. I have suffered from Rhinitis since I was a teenager; this means I’ve spent my whole life with a packet of Handy Andies stuck up my nose. People ask me every day if I have a cold. Strangers hear me sneeze and tell me “there’s a lot of it going around.” I can’t be bothered to explain that I have a permanent cold all year round (sneezing and runny nose symptoms). With many ailments you just get on with it. You go the first time to the doctors, get a prescription, and then for various reasons you stop taking the symptom-directed medicine, rarely to return to the doctors, there seems no point – the medicine doesn’t work. So you get on with it, for years, because, after all, you’re not dying, it’s just annoying. Then one day you wake trying to breathe, confused as “I would like to be your over productive nose has formed a sudden thick barrier over the alluring vamp in the pharynx. I like breathing. It helps in being a good mother. It also means a satin nightie who I’m not dead. Hang on, am I actually a doesn’t have to go to mother...? Was having a child all in my mind too? Sometimes my boyfriend finds me with it stuck up my nose, blocking the leak as I’ve given up trying to stop the nose running. No, it’s not psychological, Doctor... I think what he meant to say was “how are you feeling? Are you stressed?” I would have told him I’ve had asthma and Rhinitis for over 20 years and I’ve had enough. I would have told him this, that is, if he really exists, right? Maybe he is all in my mind too. I am a writer, after all. Maybe I’m making this all up because I think nose blowing needs more coverage. It certainly does. Man-size tissues. Anyway, I understand many ailments are due to the mind, perhaps such as stressinduced IBS or migraines, but I’ve never heard of phantom snot!

e are in the one week of the year when The Boy is only four years older than Youngest™: Next week, the gap will be back to its normal five. Three years ago, Youngest™ was born a week into The Boy’s first week at school. No wonder The Boy often has a look of mild shock on his face. This five-year difference plays a key mathematical part when The Boy thinks of the future. “When Youngest™ is one hundred and five,” he might say, “I will be one hundred and ten”. (He is depressingly accurate at applying the same calculation to me, when the final number is almost biblical.) Youngest™’s birthday had all the key ingredients. Difficult to put together toy that took one family member – this time, my Dad – a few hours to complete? Check. Birthday cake photo needing to be retaken because camera out of memory? Check. A battle over balloons? Check. Oh yes, the balloons. They bounce idly around the living room, like actors who’ve done the matinee but are waiting for the evening performance. There is no more colourful weapon than a balloon, no larger source of conflict. There are ten days between The Boy’s and Youngest™’s birthdays but they are different star signs (I’ve just done some amateur maths, and I make that a one in three likelihood, so it’s not that remarkable). The Boy is Libra and Youngest™ is Scorpio. Now astrology is not really my thing – most readings seem to be endlessly interpretable and designed to flatter – but I’ve looked up the main traits and they seem to fit. The Boy apparently has a future career in indirect selling or diplomacy, which I think could be spot on, especially if I knew what “The Boy considers indirect selling actually meant. Youngest™ on the other hand, is told that Youngest’s birthday “your search for perfection can make you dissatisfied”. Hmm. Anyone who’s a dress rehearsal read previous columns will be nodding. I think The Boy considers Youngest™’s for his own” birthday as a dress rehearsal for his own. He instructs Youngest™ on the proper way of opening a present. “Now there. Now rip it there. Turn it over. Now open this card. No, not that one. This one.” The Boy enjoyed Youngest™’s birthday so much, he wanted something identical. We broke it to him – accidentally – that his actual birthday was a school day, and it turned out he’d done calculations in his head – not quite as accurate as his biblical age trick – that put it on a Sunday. It’s not so bad. He gets a two-dayer, family then friends after school, and I’m writing this on what I call birthday eve. Wish us luck.

And this year, it’s time to dine in, in style – dinner parties, pop-up restaurants and great Brighton bake-offs mean that eating in is positively hip. Real cotton or linen napkins, sparkling glasses (add a little vinegar to hot, soapy water before washing them) and plain white tableware all help to create the perfect eating-in experience. However, to add a contemporary accent, mix some coloured or metallic glass and china pieces in to the spread to bring your table to life. Now all your perfect dining table needs is the perfect dinner.

We all love the idea of a grand dining table, but for most of us this just isn’t practical. Oblong tables are the easiest to accommodate in limited space, round or oval are the trickiest. A folding table (simple folding or drop leaf) gives you the most flexible eating space. Coloured veneers are this season’s key trend, in bold colour or stark white for a clean, modern look. If you have an openplan kitchen/living room with a bay window, think about using a curved clear or coloured glass table top and trestle legs for window-view dining. Directors Alan Larkin, Linda Lamb and Robert Williams launched Family Law Partners in April 2011, having worked together for five years as a family law team in a larger Sussex based general law firm. The three partners are all Resolution Accredited Specialists to an advanced level and are trained as Collaborative lawyers. In addition, Robert was appointed a Deputy District Judge in 2010. “Giving control back to families is what we specialise in,” explains Alan. “Resolution completely changed the landscape of family law. It was novel and radical to avoid pushing everyone into the court process.” The training for collaborative law is an additional intensive process to being a lawyer and is not for the litigiousminded. It is a non-adversarial approach to finding solutions. Collaborative law started in Australia which is more advanced in family law provision, and moved to the States, and in the last five years has been gaining ground in the UK. “Remember the client,” is a mantra that Alan lives by. Together, the three partners designed from scratch the service which reflects “how we would like to be treated, forgetting the fuddy duddy ways of the past, and looking at a whole range of new options”. These options include mediation, which has been established for about 20-25 years in this country. Linda is an experienced mediation

specialist working with families, and is one of the few mediators to include children. “Giving a voice to children is a very powerful message to give to parents who may be splitting up – to involve children in their decision making. “The process of collaborative law involves looking at different Linda options, and achieving Lamb consensus. There are always different expectations to deal with, and we have the ability to reach some common ground as well

However, if they are carried out fairly without undue influence, including proper financial disclosure, then they are increasingly seen as fair by the courts who now tend not to overrule them. They can be a way of pre-empting disputes. This week: Sickness absence and annual leave We take a look at a recent case law relating to sickness absence and annual leave and the right to carry holiday over. Mrs Larner, a clerical worker with NHS Leeds, was absent on sick leave for the whole of the leave year April 2009 to March 2010 and did not take paid annual leave during this period. When she was dismissed the following year, her employer did not pay her for the leave she had not taken in 2009 and 2010, arguing that she was not entitled to this leave as she had not requested it or carried over to another leave year. The Court of Appeal rejected the employer’s argument, holding that Mrs Larner was entitled to payment in lieu of this untaken leave on termination. The Court confirmed that the Working Time Directive (WTD) confers an unqualified right to

four weeks’ paid annual leave and that workers unable to take this leave due to sickness absence must be able to take the leave at another time, if necessary by carrying the leave over to another leave year and stated that a worker is entitled to payment for such untaken leave upon termination of employment. Importantly, the Court of Appeal held that workers who are unable to take leave because of sickness absence do not need to request leave for it to be carried over to another leave year. In Summary: • Employees on sick leave are entitled to take or carry over holidays, and to pay in lieu of holidays on termination. • An employee who is sick either before or during a period of annual

leave can take that holiday at a later date, if necessary by carrying over the leave to another leave year. • Employees who are unable to take annual leave because of sickness absence do not have to request leave in order for it to be carried over. • Employers can currently limit the carry over period for untaken leave by contractual/collective agreements. • Employers can currently limit the amount of leave that employees can carry over to the 4 weeks' leave under the WTD rather than 5.6 weeks' leave under the WTR or employees’ contractual entitlement (subject to what the contract allows). • Currently, employers are not under a duty to inform workers of their right to take annual leave whilst on sick leave.
