M

uch as I love eating out, I also love to eat in. Nothing makes me happier than a trip to my favourite food shops and a day in the kitchen. Given that we have been moving of late, that has not been high on my list of priorities and let’s face it, half the kitchen stuff, of which I have more than enough, has been packed away in boxes, some of which were marked bedroom. Given my love of cooking I have never had a really fabulous kitchen of my own, although I have cooked in some great ones owned by friends. Kitchen envy might be my greatest vice. While searching for a new home, Mr R pointed out that we should try to find somewhere with a good kitchen. To be honest I was happy to find somewhere with rooms big enough for two big blokes like us. But I have to say that my new kitchen – I say ‘my’ because Mr R does not often hit those pots and pans except for washing up – is not half bad. It doesn’t “It’s light and low in calories have any mod cons and a damn sight tastier than but that’s good. It does have lots of cupboards and work- compost, which I really don’t surfaces and it has have room for” inspired me to start cooking again, big pans of food and lots of soups, including my speciality of salad soup. I know it sounds weird but I hate waste so any leftover salad gets thrown into stock and brought to a simmer – then whizzed lightly with the stick blender. It’s light and low in calories and a damn sight tastier than compost, which I really don’t have room for. How I love my left-overs, they’re greener than green and they feel like food for free. By the way, a bit of dressing on that salad simply gives the broth a nice kick. Try it.

The Landlady The Landlady finds she has some extra tenants

I

t is half term and I’ve spent most of the week trying to keep The Small Daughter at least ten metres away from the Wii. On that note, it really gets me that although ‘metres’ comes up on the spellcheck, Wii doesn’t... Bah! modern life really gets on my t*** sometimes. I have also spent some of the week trying to arrange the scattering of my mother’s ashes in her chosen location, which is proving rather more tricky than I had ever imagined. My mother was a formidable woman when alive and is proving to be still fairly difficult from her urn. On her death bed, she dictated that she absolutely must be scattered at the local girl guide and boy scout Headquarters. Admittedly, she did help to build said HQ through an exhaustive amount of fundraising in the 1970s, but having one’s ashes scattered there seems to be a can of worms. Alas I have already peeled back the lid of this particular can by alerting a member of the local trefoil “I discovered about of my mother’s wishes and have half a tonne of old been given two options; the first option is to sneak into the grounds, sandwich packets, scatter the ashes and answer McDonald’s wrappers questions later, should anyone see us. The second option is to seek and Doritos packets” permission from ‘The Board’, who meet at the HQ on the first of every month. It is to be noted here that ‘The Board’ has already refused permission for plaques and memorial trees in the past. Furthermore, in order to get a contact name within ‘The Board’ I have to get in touch with the man who made the very long-winded speech at the funeral... I fear I have to go for option two, although a friend did suggest standing in the neighbouring field with a leaf-blower. On a more interesting note, I have discovered that not all of my neighbours are millionaire bankers with kids at private school. Unfortunately, said neighbours appear to be living in the bottom of my garden and the detritus left behind suggests that they are not exactly fairies. Admittedly, my garden is generally in a bit of a state, as I only actually go in there to tend to it a handful of times per year. The very end of the garden is a miniature forest and provides a habitat for foxes and squirrels and now, apparently vagrants. While in there the other day begrudgingly cutting back all manner of foliage, I discovered about half a tonne of old sandwich packets, McDonald’s wrappers and Doritos packets. There was also an old piece of wood laid out with a sleeping-bag on top of it. I have to say that I don’t actually mind people sleeping in my garden, but I do object to them leaving their litter behind them when they leave. I also fear that, where the ‘bed’ was positioned, they may wake up with The Big Son’s size 11 foot imprinted on their face if TBS forgets his key and has to use the ‘rear entrance’ to the house.

O

n my way home from Edinburgh, the subject of last week’s column, I took the opportunity to visit Lancaster to see one of England’s greatest follies. Brighton and Hove has more than its fair share of ornamental edifices. From the ornate clock towers in Preston Park and Blaker’s Park to the ornamental arches of St Nicholas’ Churchyard and the Royal Pavilion, we are blessed locally with many curious decorative structures. But not one compares to the Ashton Memorial. James Williamson (later Lord Ashton) and his father, also called James Williamson, were hugely successful Lancaster-based oil cloth producers. In 1877, they transformed the open moorlands and former stone quarries above the city into the magnificent Williamson Park. A temple, palm house and fountain that were designed by respected architect Sir John Belcher were added to the park in 1904. It was Belcher’s model of the proposed Ashton “My dad used to Memorial that was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1906. Its construction began the tell me how he next year and it opened in 1909 as a memorial remembered it to Lord Ashton’s family. The 150ft tower looms over the glorious as a child. The Ashton Memorial was conceived as a solid stone structure but cheaper materials were used in places such as brick, steel and concrete. By 1920, major repairs were necessary. I can actually remember it being closed when I played nearby, as a child, whilst visiting Lancaster to see my grandmother. It opened again in 1987. My dad used to tell me how he remembered it as a child. Whilst at school, he witnessed the dome burning, as did many other residents, when the memorial was badly damaged by fire in 1962. It’s a truism that buildings within childhood memories appear much smaller in person than envisaged. I

n half term we visited my mum who lives in London. My mother commented; “You always arrive and then fall asleep!” She sounded surprised by her own observation. I wanted to defensively list reasons as to why this lone parent would possibly arrive at her mothers after a long journey on two trains, and two buses with a five year old and want to collapse. I didn’t. I wearily mouthed the words “tired”. But in my head I thought, ‘it’s a long journey with a small child’, and ‘Mother you’ve just fed me a home-made “Usually when people roast dinner!’ have my daughter for a few Never mind the fact that I’m the permanent sole carer of a small child. hours I still feel on duty” When I arrive at my mum’s I literally just unfold, my body exclaims, ‘Nana’s here! She loves to spend time with her granddaughter’. Usually when people have my daughter for a few hours I still feel on duty, like I can’t turn off the phone in case she needs rushing to hospital or something. I feel I am always on call. And I feel like I need to say about a million thank yous when I collect her. Whereas when Nana takes her to the park, I feel like Nana is getting loads out of it for herself, it’s mutually beneficial, its not as a favour to me and for some reason this makes me more at ease. So I go into an exhausted coma not long after entering my mum’s house. I eat, then fall sleep like a teenager. My mum got abit cross at me when she asked if I wanted to come to the park with them. I said no through bleary eyes. Why would I want to go to the park when I can have a guilt free rest? I go to the park all the time. I look after my child 24/7, every month, about 350 days a year. To hell with rhodium and gold prices, guilt free rests are the most valuable thing in the world to me! I seem to be only able to have a guilt free rest when either my mother or her dad has her every half year. Everyone else I feel like they are doing it as a favour. I am always saying thank you. ‘Thanks for looking after her while I go to Aldi.’ ‘Thanks for taking her while I have the runs.’ And ‘thanks for looking after her while I go home and have an important snog with my boyfriend’, [some snogs are important). It sounds funny, but it’s so nice not having to say thank you to my mum. She had a great time at the a park, if anything she wants to say thank-you for the adventure. This truly makes me relaxed. I wonder, that if I become a grandparent and my daughter walks in and collapses handing over her child, whether I would be miffed. Probably, because I’d miss my daughter too...

ith three friends about to become parents for the first time, I thought I’d re-cap on Things I’ve Learnt As A Parent. Each one is represented by a line on my face that people assume indicates wisdom. (They’re wrong of course; they just indicate I’ve got lines on my face.) Learn to distract. If kids are annoyed that a programme isn’t on TV, don’t try and reason with them. Instead point out that a cloud in the sky outside looks like a dinosaur! Even if it doesn’t. (P.S Vary this. The cloud/dinosaur combo won’t work indefinitely). To a non-parent it probably looks like you’re in denial. I deny this. It’s just survival. Never announce plans in advance. If there’s the possibility of a trip to the park in four hours, never announce it earlier or you’ll have a small child holding their shoes. Bad things shouldn‘t be mentioned either. A supermarket trip proposed three days away can cause writhing on the floor right now. Children are illogical. Deal with it. Non-parents might think a toy should be a car, a doll, a teddy, but it’s more likely to be a set of keys, gravel inside a matchbox or a comb forced into a shoe. These are the things the under-3 will want to cuddle on a long journey. I’ve learnt, as a parent, you’ve got to get used to conversations being interrupted. To talk in bursts and not be offended when someone else stops mid-sentence to shout something to their own child. Never start again from the beginning or you’ll never make it past the same point. (I made this same mistake watching Inception.) I’m running out of space. I’ve learnt also that jigsaws are a pain to tidy away, but Russian dolls are worse. I’ve learnt that young children’s books are repetitive (get over it), that sleep is like gold dust. I’ve realised that there’s an awful lot of plastic in the world, think very carefully before buying a toy that speaks, and I’ve learnt never, ever, turn away an offer of help.

It’s easy to update your look and change curtains according to the season (or your mood) - cotton voile or linen in summer months, and heavier fabrics for the winter, work well. If you have the budget, go bespoke for a custom made fit, unless your windows are ‘standard’ sizes, in which case you might find the perfect pair on the high street. Choose style, material and colours carefully with the rest of your space in mind. If you want to make a feature of a large or unusual window, use colour and
