eing ever so modern, I’ve gone digital. I know, everyone’s going digital so deal with it! But you weren’t around when I struggled with going decimal. I mean some of you may have been alive in 1969, but few of you were there, by my side as I struggled. It wasn’t the change to working in units of ten that phased me, far from it. No the problem for me was my anger. Anger that only three days after my 14th birthday the government were introducing a monetary system that would negate a huge chunk of my education to that point. From four to fourteen life was a minefield of furlongs, bushels, chains, pounds, shillings and pence. Then at a simple stroke all that was left was ten. TEN! The trauma of that legislation has, I believe, left me scarred. I can cope with most things that life throws my way, cook a decent meal, bake a cake, paint a wall and hang a roll of paper and believe it or not, I can change a wheel on a car. Dead butch I am. A short while back the need arose for an alarm “From four to fourteen life clock. But Mr R is less easlily woken, so I went out and purchsed a digital alarm radio, DAB to be precise. And I loved it from the get go. It’s small and nicely designed, it charges my phone overnight too, a real boon, and it has lots of settings so that I can be woken in a multitude of ways to music or to radio stations of my choice. Well my choice was BBC Radio 7. I love the mix of classic comedy and drama, I find it soothing; a real comfort. So when it was all set up I could be awakened by the gentle banter of ‘The Navy Lark’ or ‘Just A Minute’. Then recently I had to unplug and retune the device. BBC Radio 7 was gone. I pressed buttons in vain. I could not find my night time comforts from Broadcasting House. The next day I did a little research and discovered that the BBC, in its wisdom, had changed Radio 7 to Radio 4 Extra. I started to search the device and found it, but only after yet another numerically prompted trauma. I often wonder if I would be happier if I was still dealing with the little piles of cowrie shells that started my mathmatical misery.

The Landlady The Landlady has holiday withdrawal symptoms

T

raditionally, during the months of July, August and September, I tend not to leave Brighton, or if I do, I do not leave for long, as during these months, Landlady Towers tends to be full of potentially dangerous (when left to their own devices) students. I mean, I haven’t had a holiday for nearly four weeks! I’m joking, but just to be on the safe side and avoid any potential withdrawal symptoms, I am off to Spain tomorrow for a long weekend. I am going with four friends, one of whom has a holiday home in the Sierra Nevada near Granada, which is where we will be staying. This, plus the fact that we shall be flying with – and this is a first for me – a ‘budget’ airline means that it is a very cheap holiday. Indeed, it will be cheaper than staying at home and looking after all the students. And besides, I am fed up with them coming into my bedroom and asking inane questions about the washing machine, the dinner, the weather, the fridge, the oven, etc. And I’ve got another two months of it still to go this year. I am already quite dubious about going on holiday with these four particular friends “The cheeky airline as last time we went away steward commented together to Boston – that is America, not Lincs – the that we all looked like we weekend was so debauched that I slept for two whole days needed a Bloody Mary” on our return. And Boston, let me tell you, is one of the least dynamic cities I’ve ever visited. If I was to be perfectly honest and rather rude, I would say that it is the American equivalent of Coventry. Yet on our return flight, even the Border Control guard at the US end – not renowned for either their generosity or customer service – agreed that I could keep my dark glasses on for ‘medical reasons’. And the cheeky airline Steward did nothing to boost our confidence, as he immediately commented that we all looked like we needed a Bloody Mary. All this at 8.15 in the morning, I ask you. We’re all a bit older now, but I’m sure that it will not make a hap’orth of difference, as all five of us are quite strong-willed, yet at the same time, very easily led, which is not a winning combination if you have a plan. We are hoping to do some nice, sturdy walks in the Sierra Nevada, as well as a little lounging by the pool. We are also planning to go into Granada for a night on the tiles, which will probably severely curtail our walking plans, yet extend our ‘lounging’ ones. And I’m not even sure they do Bloody Marys on the ‘budget’ airlines... Oh dear.

Robert Nemeth on the Chapel Royal Clock Tower

S

hoppers rarely look up so it may well be that many have missed it. Nevertheless, the Chapel Royal’s distinctive clock tower is a North Street landmark. I recently wrote a column about the vast empty vaults beneath the Chapel Royal, which led to a quick tour of the public areas above. The tower and two red-brick facades were added during the 1870s after the side of the original building was exposed following the demolition of the building to the south. It was in fact demolished so that could be widened. When Father David Biggs, priest at the Chapel Royal, suggested that I might wish to see the clock at the top of the tower, I obviously jumped at the chance. The interior of the church includes a number of noteworthy features including a Willis organ, built in 1883 by the famous London firm of Henry Willis & Sons. There is a Willis organ nearby in Brighton Dome and also in St “Two flights of steep, Paul’s, Salisbury and Truro Cathedrals. wooden steps lead A solid set of steps leads from the ground floor to the first floor gallery up to the clock” that hugs the north, east and west walls of the building. The gallery offers a delightful view of the nave below including its geometric linoleum floor, which was added during the 1990s. Although I would have been quite happy just to get climbing, the next stage of the ascent involved putting on a harness and it was at that point that I met up with Gary, the lucky chap who looks after the clock. Two flights of steep, wooden, ladder-like steps lead up to the clock and along the way they pass the pendulum and driving weights. Various openings, including a number of windows and translucent clock faces, allow plenty of light into the tower. The clock itself is a work of art and is a joy to behold. Although the winding process is now electrified, the clock works pretty much as it did when it was first installed. A small change is that it no longer chimes all night. Another – and it is only aesthetic – is that the names of those who have worked on the clock (I presume) have been written on its wooden cabinet. The earliest date that Gary and I could see was 1898. Funnily enough, a chalk note suggests that another Gary – Gary Overton – looked after that clock in 1960 – aged 17. I

t’s a strange thing buying a toy for a five year old. Choosing a birthday present feels like I’m not just buying a toy, it feels like I’m deciding which views of the world I’m going to impress onto my child. I’m considering a Barbie doll... where life is about changing outfits frequently and having a pony. Why isn’t there a Barbie who wears jumpers, works in a call centre and can be accessorised with a sofa and a PS3? Call centre Barbie! That seems more modern. Or I could buy her accessories for her “When she was little she Baby Annabell. She already wanted to play with cars. has the crying baby (finally found that elusive Then she was given dolls...” off button...) and the buggy, changing bag, etc that goes with it. Now I understand that children like to act out adults in their play and pretending to be a nice, nurturing baby-changing mamma is probably a good thing (rather than acting out moody doctors’ receptionists.) “C’mon Timmy, lets play moody doctors’ receptionists! I’ll be the poorly lady who can’t get an appointment till next week even though her leg has fallen off and you be the receptionist with a chip on her shoulder!” Sometimes I feel like I’m just allowing her to follow stereotypes. When she was little she wanted to play with cars. Then she was given dolls... Her friend visited the other day and he said disappointedly looking around her room, “I don’t play with dolls, I play with cars”. And I wondered how different his play must be, while my daughter is acting out feelings and behaviour. “Oh, poor baby you are sick, have this medicine.” She’s acting out compassion and nurturing, while this little boy is re-enacting the grand prix around his room. Perhaps this play nurtures a natural competitiveness and imprints the feeling of winning in his psyche (I’m guessing he’s not acting out losing the race...). I have no idea what complex anthropological events are happening when they play but I’m thinking we can guide them towards things we think might be good for them. I’m thinking of compromising and buying her a Barbie doll that’s a doctor! There is one! She wears a rather short skirt, though. If my doctor looked like that there’d be a lot more male patients in the waiting room wanting prostrate checks. Do you think playing being a doctor might make her want to be a doctor? Do I think that playing with a baby will turn her into a teenage mum? Or that her car-playing friend will become Lewis Hamilton? I guess not. But I’ve ordered the Doctor Barbie just in case – and a few racing cars...

irst, an update on last week’s Tooth Fairy negotiations. No sooner had I submitted my copy than The Boy had a second tooth fall out, this time in the playground. Gappy just got gappier. Later that night, worrying the evidence wouldn’t be under his pillow, he wrote an extra note: “I accseedentlee dropt me tooth and lost it”. I may as well continue with a few updates of previous Distracted Dad columns. If I just say I like duck, chicken or lamb, it makes me sound like I’m looking for a Sunday lunch. I’ve mentioned gravel before (Youngest™ loves carrying gravel around) and there’s no change there, just two places we have visited where gravel loomed large. A museum built inside an old quarry was one, the other was Sussex University, part of which featured boulders dotted around. To Youngest™’s eye, these just looked like massive bits of gravel. His frenzied pointing was like a tourist going into an American supermarket and marvelling at their genetically modified tomatoes. (I say tourist. This was me back in 2000.) I should update you on my running. To my shame, I haven’t been. Back in March, I did a 10k run, and since then events have stopped me continuing. At one point, I thought I had a life-long knee injury (caused by walking down a mountain while eating pastry). The knee now seems to be fine, but I’m a bit worried about my ankle. I imagine that might be a life-long injury, too. The Boy continues asking me what my favourites are, currently focused on Star Wars. He asks me every night who my I like the best. (Normally Darth Vader or R2D2, thanks for asking.) When I pointed out that he’d asked me the same question the night before, he looked at me as if to say ‘So?’. ‘Mine changes every night,’ was what he did say. ‘I thought yours did, too.’ On a variation of the old European coach tour quote, ‘If it’s Tuesday it must be Chewbacca.’

Be strategic Firstly, work out what it is you do that your competitors don’t, and then capitalise on it. Make sure your USPs are central to every action and thought process you have. Business customers will want you to increase their sales and reduce their costs for them. Non-business customers want status, popularity, pleasure, comfort. Feed their needs and think and act strategically at all times.

Avoid failure Avoid the mistakes that can lead to business failure. The top ones are, Lack of Direction (the failure to set goals), Impatience (spending too much on advertising without a proper customer base), Greed (trying to get rich quick), Poor Cost Control (conserve the cash), Poor Quality (of product or service), Insufficient Working Capital (don’t run out of money) and Insufficient Sales (selling is always the primary focus). Fit for purpose Someone once said that “the purpose of a business is not to make a profit but to keep a customer”, which is interesting. In my opinion, it is both, but the point remains. Focus on the purpose of the business, the market it is in, what you want to achieve and what your business would look like if it were ideal. Profit comes from servicing a customer, in a profitable way.

The business plan Not again, I hear you say, but yes, spend time on a good business plan. It makes you think early on and helps you to develop your business as you move along. Only one thing to add, it’s an oldie but a goody: everything costs twice as much and takes three times as long as you think it will.

Sales And finally, whatever you do, focus all energies on sales. Sell, sell, sell until your order book is bulging and only then concentrate on other things. Develop an effective sales process and deliver it every day. As a business owner, you should focus every day on sales and delegate everything else.

Summary

Ensure success Do everything possible to ensure business success. Make sure you ‘suit’ the product or service to the market. Undertake full market analysis before spending any money on advertising. Implement sound financial controls, and ensure high capability, competence and integrity from key people.

Successful businesses think every day about what to do to ensure success and what to do to avoid failure. Outside of this they concentrate whole heartedly on selling. Can I dismiss a driver who didn’t realise he was driving without a valid licence as it had expired? A. Potentially yes. As we all know, your driver won’t have been insured if he was driving without a valid licence and he will also have been committing a criminal offence. If your policies and procedures make it clear that it is an individual driver’s responsibility to renew their licence at the appropriate time and this man hasn’t, then the consequences of his inaction may well justify dismissal. Q. Even if those consequences didn’t actually arise? A. Yes, even if he wasn’t involved in an accident or stopped by the Police, you may still be able to dismiss him if the decision to dismiss is within what is known as the “band of reasonable responses” that an employer in your business might take. Reasonableness is assessed

objectively, so where there are potentially serious consequences of an employee’s misconduct that don’t actually manifest themselves, this doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t dismiss. Q. I had a similar case last year but I didn’t dismiss that driver because it was only a few days before he realised his licence had run out and he had some family problems which I believe led to the oversight. By not dismissing that driver, have I now set a precedent? A. Not necessarily, no. Any previous decision to dismiss will only be relevant where the circumstances are “truly parallel” and it sounds like the case with the first driver was different. Do you have a formal policy on this? If so, follow it and of course don’t forget to follow your disciplinary policy before deciding how to proceed with this driver as he might have a

mitigating argument as well. You are however entitled to deal with employees differently, providing you have an objective reason to do so. Q. This current driver was driving without a valid licence for about six months. It seems obvious to me that this is gross misconduct so do I really have to follow the disciplinary procedure? A. Yes, you do. A failure to follow a disciplinary procedure entitles a Tribunal to award an uplift on any damages they order an employer to pay and can lead to an inference that the dismissal was unfair. If you don’t hold a meeting, you won’t know of any mitigating circumstances. You should always follow the procedure before dismissing someone and always confirm the reason for the dismissal in writing, as the document may be used in evidence at any subsequent Tribunal hearing.
