I

’d love to say “I don’t know much about art but I know what I like” but it would simply not be true. Four years of art school has given me a decent level of knowledge, 16 years of commissioning illustration has added to it and 55 years looking at it can’t be ignored. So I know something about art, as a spectator and as a practitioner, and I know what I like. Knowing what I like is a gift and a curse. See it, like it, buy it. It’s a formula that gives both pleasure and pain, the pain if you can’t really afford to buy but have that burning desire to posess. Artists Open Houses have become an annual addiction for me. I do my best to resist the urge to purchase yet more art. Personally I will be looking for quality, variety, ambience – and a range of prices, too. I’m sorry, but I’m not looking at cake stalls. I will however be looking for things that I like, and in essence isn’t that what we all do when we view what we collectively call ‘Art’?

MAJOR INVESTMENT FROM BANK TO CHARITY TO IMPROVE HOMES

Brighton & Hove City Council and Brighton & Hove Seaside Community Homes (BHSCH) have agreed a funding facility of £30 million from Santander to invest in the council’s housing. BHSCH, a registered charity, will use the money to bring 499 council homes up to 21st century standards. The homes are being transferred to BHSCH by the council on a long lease. Work will

start in the late spring. Homes in disrepair and long-term empty homes and flats, which have not received investment, will be included in the initiative. Larger houses used as temporary accommodation will be converted into modern flats. All the ‘new’ homes will be let at affordable rents to families and others in housing need in the city. Gary Adams, director housing finance, Santander Corporate Banking, said: “We are pleased to have been able to provide this

innovative financing facility to enable the upgrade of this stock of social housing, which in turn will help improve the lives and living standards of Brighton and Hove residents.” www.brighton-hove.gov.uk

BIG RISE IN HOUSE SALES IN MARCH FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE MONTH

The latest Agency Express Property Activity Index provides further evidence that confidence is returning to the housing market. March saw a second consecutive monthly rise in the number of houses sold and it was the third consecutive month that there has

been a month-on-month rise in the number of new ‘For Sale’ listings Monthly house sales were up 23.2 per cent in March following February’s rise of 38.3 per cent. Sales reached their highest level since May last year and were 4.8 per cent up on March 2010 and 10.2 per cent up on March 2009. There was also a boost to the supply of properties on the market. The number of properties that were put up ‘For Sale’ in March in the UK was up 25 per cent, the highest level achieved since August 2010. am writing this column the day before the second Brighton Marathon. I’m extremely glad I did not enter this year, as soon after the last Marathon I suffered an Achilles tendon injury which I suspect was due more to overenthusiastic salsa dancing than excessive running. As every athlete – even amateur but determined ones like myself – knows, the Achilles problem can only be rectified by prolonged periods of rest. Rest is not a word that has ever featured in my vocabulary, and if I don’t run every day, I start to go mildly crazy. Therefore, my Achilles will never ever get better, but if that means I have an excuse to never run another Marathon as long as I live, I think I can just about handle it. Due to The New Boyfriend and hangovers that are completely beyond my control, my routine has gone entirely to pot, and I’ve been running at very random times of day. Sometimes, I’m up as early as 6.15am and leaping along the seafront – Achilles allowing – like a young gazelle. On other days, I don’t even manage to get out of bed until 5pm, which means that I run at 6.15pm. The words ‘young’ and ‘gazelle’ do not apply on these occasions. On certain days, I’ve run at 8.15 in the evening, then 6.15 the following morning, which almost counts as running twice in the same day. People who live on my running route must think I’m mad. Mind you, so are they if they’re up at 6am every morning. When I’m working in The Supermarket, a great deal of customers comment that they’ve seen me out running. I always feel like saying that the odds of that are rather favourable, being that I’ve done it almost every single day for the past 15 years. In fact, I’d be more surprised if they hadn’t seen me. Nobody will see me running “My Achilles might for the next two weeks though, never get better – but as I’m off to the USA, this time with The Small Daughter. We it’s an excuse to never are flying to Miami and run a Marathon again” travelling up the East Coast – via the horror that is Disneyworld – on the train to New York. This is a backwards repeat performance of a trip I made a couple of years ago, when I flew to New York, then travelled to Miami on the train. Last time I had great fun, many of the details being of the sort that cannot be repeated with a nine year old in tow. Thus far, The Small Daughter has her priorities right, and is more concerned with the in-flight meal service and entertainment than the actual destination. As well as looking forward to introducing The Small Daughter to the States, I am also welcoming the thought of being without a hangover for a fortnight. Bring it on!

T

he RNLI boathouse that was built on Kingston Beach in 1933 was knocked down in 2009 to make way for a new £4.2 million cathedrallike structure. The modern, highly advanced building, which opened in October 2010, houses two different rescue boats and features exposed timber throughout. The larger of the two boats is housed within a cavernous hangar with a vaulted roof. It is a 2000horsepower Tamar-class lifeboat called Enid Collett, named after the late donor whose legacy funded its purchase. It cost £2.7 million, weighs 31 tonnes and holds up to 118 people. A smaller inshore lifeboat is housed within the eastern portion of the building. Each has its own new slipway leading to the sea below. “The boat cost £2.7m, The frame of the building consists of huge Glulam beams weighs 31 tonnes and (from Austria apparently). Much of the exterior has been holds up to 118 people” clad with timber, and timber windows have been used throughout. Other environmentally-friendly features include a ground-source heat pump and rainwater-harvesting facilities. I was lucky enough to take a trip to the Marina on Enid Collett on the day when I visited the boathouse. The thrill began the moment the boat was released from its shackles, a second or so before it hit the sea at the bottom of the slipway. Although it was quite misty, I loved looking at the buildings along Brighton and Hove’s seafronts from a fresh perspective. Up close, buildings look very different to how their respective architects would have drawn them. From street level, for example, the lower levels of a building dominate the view. From afar, the proportions even out. The seafront compositions of Brunswick Town and Kemp Town were particularly pleasing when viewed from the boat. The team at Shoreham is headed by Coxswain Peter Huxtable, a local fishmonger, who explained to me just how much the RNLI relies on donations and volunteers. It receives no government assistance whatsoever (and doesn’t want it either), and the new boathouse was built following a massive community fundraising drive. Interestingly enough, Texaco donates the fuel for the boats at Shoreham – which is not at all cheap. A dinner will be held on Saturday 14 May at the Grand Hotel to celebrate the new boathouse’s opening – tickets are still available. I for one will certainly be there. I

haven’t got a problem with them. Hey, a lot of my friends are pet owners! I appreciate the need for some company that doesn’t talk back to you yet offers much needed affection and companionship. I just don’t understand people that buy lovely pets knowing that they won’t be around to look after them. My friends are trying to buy a cat at the moment. They found a seller selling kittens training to use the toilet. Using the human toilet – that’s probably ‘looking after “Dripping wet and naked, them’ too much... Today I have spent way too much I grab a broom and shoo time googling ‘how to stop neighbours cats from coming it out the flat door” in window’. A ginger cat keeps breaking and entering into my flat. Actually there’s no ‘breaking’ just ‘entering’ (through open windows.) The only breaking is the sound of my four year old breaking wind with utter fear as she happily plays looking up to suddenly find a lion (comparative to her size) strolling around the house, and then racing to lie in wait for its prey under the bed. My child is terrified. It’s only a cat... I assure her the cat is just lost and probably hungry for cat food, not her. Dripping wet and naked (I was in the shower) I grab a broom and shoo it out the door, then I assure the child that it will never return! The four year old suggests I get a towel and put the broom down. Then the next day it skips in through the window again. How? It’s jumping nine feet into our first floor flat! No wonder she’s so frightened – this a paratroop cat! We should send it to the Middle East. (But we should ask the British army first.) Googling, I find online forums exposing a world full of angry neighbours offering cat deterrent advice which verge on cruelty and madness. One deterrent suggested is a pellet made from ‘Lion Essence’. Yes the essence of the lion. The product reckons that the smaller cat will be deterred by the scent of a bigger cat... Righto...! Other deterrents suggested are stringing a line of CDs together, which cause reflections of light that put the cat off... Hanging a chain of CDs outside will not only deter cats but also deter rising house prices in the area. I want to stop the cat coming in the window but I don’t want it to look like Blue Peter has decorated. The child’s solution is “never open the windows again”. The next day I see the cat stuck on a balcony and people trying to shoo it down. “Is that your cat?” I say. Woman nods and then I say something bleary eyed at 8am that in retrospect I shouldn’t. I ask: “Do you feed it?” I meant to say, “I wonder how we can solve this...”. The woman gives me an astounded look and I scurry away home to make a necklace out of CDs.

he Boy isn’t really into football. His cousin is mad on it, lots of his friends are into it, but he’s not that bothered. He knows I like it and that Mummy thinks it’s ‘boring.’ Sometimes, on a Sunday morning, we watch Match Of The Day together. This is normally because I’ve missed the Saturday night and am desperate to know the scores (which I’ve studiously avoided through the day á la The Likely Lads.) The Boy will be kind of watching it, but mainly what he’s doing is asking me as many questions as possible, as if he’s being sponsored. He asks which team is which, who I want to win, and “how many nil have Chelsea scored”. I have to keep explaining that nil means nothing, and refers to one of the team’s scores, rather than just a word you put on the end of a number, but this bit hasn’t really sunk in. Even though he’s not really into football, he does know who his favourites are. (On any topic he’ll know who his favourites are.) His teams in order are Chelsea, then England then Brazil. Then Spain, Germany, and Tottenham. If I’m lucky. (At the risk of alienating Latest Magazine’s readers, I should confess Tottenham are my team.) I think his list of teams above is determined by, in order: 1) His cousin’s team, 2) The team people around him were supporting at the World Cup, 3) The team who he was told was best at the World Cup, 4) The team that won the World Cup, 5) The team that he got in his class sweepstake, er, at the World Cup, 6) To keep “He asks which team is me happy. which and how many nil Even though he’s asking questions, none of the have Chelsea scored” important information sinks in. After every goal, he asks me the score. Weirdly though, six months after the World Cup we were having a conversation about Holland and I said they put out Germany in the semifinals. “No, Dad,” he said as if explaining one of life’s harsh truths. “Spain did that.” He’s come up with other facts too, long after the actual games, though he never seems interested in what happens with the ball. His obsession with the stats after the game, while forgetting anything that happens during it, is like watching football with a goldfish who later turns into Rain Man. Maybe he’s just a typical male, who are said to often lie on the mild end of the autism spectrum. He’s certainly a collector of information. Maybe I’ve gone too deep. Perhaps he’s simply a six year old trying to feign interest in one of his dad’s hobbies. Finally, Tottenham’s game is shown, the last on Match Of The Day. Nil-Nil.

Go up a level If a loft conversion is out of the question, but you’re lucky enough to have head space in your home, make the most of it by adding a mezzanine level. Perfect for Victorian and Regency properties where ceilings – especially ground and first floor – tend to be high, a well-planned mezzanine can increase floor space by up to 40 per cent without detracting from the architectural style of the room (or damaging original features). Where ceiling heights exceed around 3.5m, a simple gallery-style mezzanine can add valuable sleeping and workspace, and small second bedrooms can benefit from a mezzanine-style sleeping area. Many conversions use the space beneath a mezzanine to house kitchen or bathroom areas, with additional storage.

M

ore and more homeowners are moving up instead of moving out. When you’re short of space (but still love your home) then a loft conversion can a cost-effective solution. This week, Latest Interiors shows you how to move up in the world.

Room with a view Loft conversions are one of the most popular home improvements. And it’s not surprising. A good conversion can add an average of 200–300 square feet of living space to a property without incurring moving costs, increasing its value by upwards of 15 per cent. In Brighton and Hove, where family-sized properties are at a premium, it could be even more. The most common – and affordable – loft conversions are Velux or roof-light conversions

(where flat windows are laid into the roof to provide light and ventilation), followed closely by dormer conversions (a boxed extension that adds head height as well as extra space in small lofts). Dormers add space to small lofts and, done well, look more ‘integrated’ than simple roof-lights. However, conversions aren’t suitable for all homes, and there are some minimum requirements: A good rule of thumb is that at least half the usable space should have a head height of 2.3m. There also needs to be enough room for a permanent staircase. Sadly, some types of roof just aren’t suitable for conversion, and any alterations to roof line or shape are (currently) unlikely to be favoured by planners (see http://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk /downloads/bhcc/localplan2001/01SPGBH _Roof_Extensions___Alterations.pdf).
