S

aturday I had Keira Knightley. Monday was Anna Nicole Smith. Friday was Judy Garland. It was a week of celebrity served in a variety of ways. Keira was in The Children’s Hour, the Lillian Hellman classic, and she proved her real worth as an actress dispelling the thought that she was merely cast for her celebrity. Anna Nicole was the tragic victim of her life, a large part of “Saturday I had Keira which was celebrity built on notoriety. The Royal Opera Knightley. Friday no bars in that raw evening’s entertainment. was Judy Garland” But the real star of the week has to be Tracie Bennett in End Of The Rainbow. Tracie is perhaps better know for being in Coronation Street. I’m a big Corrie fan but I have over the years also criticised the casting of soap ‘stars’ in stage productions. All too often they have failed. But not this time. Bennett is the core of the most amazing show about Judy Garland’s final attempt to make a financially successful comeback at London’s Talk of the Town. It’s a performance of real star quality on every level. Bennett not only looks like Garland, she walks like her, moves like her, and, above all, sounds like her in both her speech and most importantly her singing. She walks onto the stage and from that first entrance she is utterly compelling. So much so that it’s hard to believe that the play could be done by anyone else. And it’s a good play too, not simply a ‘juke-box’ musical in which Bennett can show off her excellent impression, far from it. It’s a gutsy and often distressing view of the drug and drink addled star struggling with all of her demons. Bennett delivers on that score too, so much so that it’s hard to think that on matinee days she can deliver the role twice. The play also has a remarkable performance from Hilton McRae as her pianist Anthony. Although homosexual he displays total love for the fragile star offering to bring her to his home in Brighton to look after her and take her away from the hell that is her celebrity. Celebrity has gripped the world and often for the wrong reasons, but for Tracie Bennett the word would be well-earned and deserved. The Landlady The Landlady joins up again with an old friend

O

ne of my first ever lodgers came back to visit me the weekend just gone. She’s from the Channel Islands and lived at Landlady Towers from when she was 17 until she was 19. I was in my late thirties at the time, but it didn’t stop us from going out together way too often, taking over adjoining podiums in the Zap Club and generally behaving terribly all over Brighton. I remember taking an immediate liking to her because when she first arrived to look at the house, after casting a very brief eye over the tiny bedroom that was to be hers, she claimed it was the best room she’d seen and that she would move in the following Monday. Most prospective lodgers since, having complained about the bijoux nature of the room, then launch into about a million questions about myself, my family and my cooking. My first instincts about her turned out to be accurate and we’ve remained friends, in spite of the length of time and the distance between us. Alarmingly, The Big Daughter, who despises almost everyone, also took to our lodger. Last weekend was her 26th birthday and there “Alarmingly, The Big must have been tumbleweed Daughter, who despises blowing up and down the main street of St Peter Port, almost everyone, also because she brought half of Guernsey with her to took to our lodger” celebrate in Brighton. Even her mum and dad – whom I’ve met many times and are almost as mad as me – were involved. A supposedly sedate meal at a posh Hove establishment on the Friday night descended into a terrible session of Tuaca drinking at the bar where The Big Son works. Alas, I had a 7am start in the kitchen at The Supermarket the following day, which seemed a rather hilarious prospect while sitting in a bar five hours before, yet when the alarm – that I have no recollection of setting – went off at 6.30am, all the humour of the situation had completely vanished. I managed an eight-hour shift at The Supermarket, then after a three-hour afternoon nap, we were ready to start again. While I’d been at work, even more people had turned up from Guernsey and my house was full of cigarette smoke and empty wine bottles by 11pm. After a messy time in the Lion and Lobster – my local and without doubt the very best pub in Brighton – we headed to The Funky Buddah. Alas, it’s no longer funky. I haven’t been there for a couple of years, but it now seems to be perpetually an ’80s themed night. There was actually some good music released in the ’80s, but one would struggle to believe it from the music playing there. So it was all back to mine for some music, much unnecessary falling-over, and an 8am finish. Bloody lodgers...

Robert Nemeth on a model worth a two-year wait

T

he closing scene of the film Raiders Of The Lost Ark depicts a crate containing the ark of the covenant being safely stored away in a sprawling government warehouse full of countless similar crates. I imagine Brighton & Hove City Council’s museum store to be a similar facility. Whatever appearance it takes, I have no doubt that it contains a myriad of hidden treasures. One such artifact is a scale model of Wykeham Terrace that I heard about some years ago. It took two years to arrange the viewing but I was finally able to see the model at the end of February. It was certainly worth the wait. Wykeham Terrace is the rather distinctive Grade II Listed Regency composition on Dyke Road, just below St Nicholas Church. Unlike other local compositions of the period, the style is gothic rather than classical. I had little idea what to expect though. I was pleasantly surprised by how many of those that I invited came (around 50) but, most importantly, just how remarkable the model is in its depiction of the historic terrace. Due to the presence of several obstacles such as trees and walls, it is not so easy to see the entirety of the real terrace in all of its glory. The model allows such views and presents the terrace in a way that I had never seen before. Its symmetry, in particular, is now much clearer to me. The wood and card model came into the possession of the people of Brighton and Hove in 1986 and was certainly on display in the Brighton Museum until 1999, the year that the large works programme commenced. It was built by “Messrs Barnard, Firth, Flmnn and Sattar of the School of Architecture, Brighton Polytechnic”. The spelling of “Flmnn” may well be incorrect but that is what went down in the records. I am grateful to local history curator Heather Fitch who organised for the model to be removed from storage and carried out some research into its history. ’ve been asked on a few dates recently, but I just can’t be bothered with the opposite sex until the building works are done on my flat. That’s not me getting old, honest! This is because until the work is done I cannot think straight. And not because I don’t have my own bedroom. I’m not the kind of girl that would need a bedroom after a first date. Well not any more, not since becoming born-again virgin post motherhood. I’m joking, I just haven’t got the space mentally in my head for anyone else. I am just about managing to be nice to daughter and myself. Never mind making someone feel “For a woman, there’s special in romance. And apart from that, you couldn’t actually fit a double bed into the new bedroom/old kitchen. I really could do with someone to be nice to me. Some support and hugs. Hey, forget the hugs, maybe just a lift to B&Q so I don’t have to cycle back with the new skirting board! For a woman there’s nothing like DIY to make you feel really single. I don’t miss someone doing the work, I miss being able to talk to someone about it all, discuss it, and problem-solve. Mostly, I miss someone to share the responsibility with of all the decision-making. All this responsibility is scary! What if I make the wrong decisions? Does the fan extraction really need external venting? Is it OK to trim the architrave? I don’t know! I know how many hours of sleep my daughter needs not to be a monster the next day. I know how many snacks she can consume before she’ll refuse to eat her dinner and wake the next day at 6am hungry. Sure, I could go on a date but instead of light flirty banter, I’d be bringing paint colour charts. “Do you think blue is OK for a four year-old-girl’s bedroom?” Bringing along sink catalogues: “brushed steel or shiny chrome?” It might be bit much for a first date but that’s what I need right now, not romance. Perhaps when my kitchen is installed in my lounge, I can start dating again and enjoy romantic meals... with the hum of the newly placed fridge in the background... If I was a real only child I’d just leave the fridge in the child’s bedroom, right? Hmm...

et me give you an insight into lunch out with Youngest™. Beware, I’m going into almost slow-motion detail. Like a Booker Prize winner, but without the writing quality. Also there’s more slapstick. In fact, because Youngest™ doesn’t speak, and I can’t draw diagrams in this column, it’s going to be like the novelisation of a Mr Bean episode. So if that’s your cup of tea then: 1. Read on and 2. Are you mad? He’s in the pushchair at the start. This is good in one way, he’s contained, but does make it tricky carrying anything. There’s a lot of planning involved. I scour the room for a decent place. A helpful assistant carries my tray while Youngest™ arches his back to get out. I wrestle him out of his coat, which really should come with instructions, it’s so complicated. He has a tuna sandwich, I have a chicken sandwich and a coffee. He’s already had raisins in the pushchair. One of the raisins drops on the next table. (Remember that plot point). I stir my coffee, pleased to be sitting down and relaxing. He squeaks and points, till I give him my teaspoon. He is happy for two seconds. Then he squeaks and points at the small cup that contained milk for coffee. I drain it, wipe it and pass it over. He picks up his tuna sandwich and stuffs it in the cup. Then he cranes his neck around and stares at the foreign students. They smile at him and wave. He stuffs more tuna sandwich in the cup and looks back at them for extra approval. All the while, I am trying to coax him into more food. I have some pear in the bag “I reach over – she which he does eat, but he doesn’t want the yoghurt, he thinks I’m about to steal wants the spoon. He starts trying to spoon his tuna her flapjack – and I sandwich out of the cup, and retrieve the raisin” because he’s eating some of it, I sit back a little. I mistakenly get a pen and notebook out of my pocket to write a list. He shrieks and points at the pen. I give in (again) and pass him the pen. He turns and shows it to the foreign students. They smile and wave (again). He knocks over his tuna-in-a-cup. I get it for him. As he watches me do his errands, he spots the raisin on the next table, which by now has someone sitting at it. He strains in his chair, and the woman’s confused because from her angle, she can’t see the raisin. I reach over – she thinks I’m about to steal her flapjack – and I retrieve the raisin. I struggle him back in the coat. We go.

Loops and cords are made from uncut loops of yarn, and have a very textured, rugged finish – hardwearing and great to look at, but possibly better suited to areas with less dirt and mess. Velvets are a finer, smoother version of twists, and are ideal for bedrooms and more formal spaces. Real wool carpets usually cost a little more than man-made or wool/nylon blends, but they remain the gold standard for floor covering. They are also a sustainable, environmentally friendly choice. Wool carpets are hard wearing and stain resistant, and usually clean up well, but for really high traffic areas (or if you’re on a budget), blends of wool and synthetic fibres perform very well.

This season, natural, neutral tones and plain carpets remain a strong trend. But as the season changes, manufacturers report that colour is making a comeback: Aubergine, chocolate, deep plum and red, as well as rich shades of chocolate, off-black and charcoal compliment key trends in interiors and furnishings. Pattern is also coming back into style – chintzy florals for traditional settings, stripes, dots and geometric shapes for more contemporary spaces. Patterned carpet can be used to define feature spaces, much like wallpaper or brightly coloured paint. I

n the list of real professions that includes doctors, dentists and surgeons, comes architects. But for many people, the idea of hiring an architect is a daunting one. Maybe we are frightened of the expense, maybe it’s the idea that they will force you to build something that looks like a cross between the Gherkin in the city of London or Frank Gehry’s impressive but weird Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. And all you wanted was a kitchen extension or a loft conversion. Surely your builder can design that? But can they? That is the question local architectural firm ARCH-angels ask. Nicola Thomas, had been working for ten years from home. Then eighteen months ago she met architect Richard Zinzan and they started ARCH-angels. Since then the company has doubled in both size and reputation – something they attribute to their client-first philosophy. The practice is varied in what it does. While they still enjoy the challenges of one-off projects for individual clients, whether it be simple extensions and conversions or new build houses, they also work on larger scale projects with community organisations and developers, one thing always remains the same: they are always client led and client focused. “We are not the kind of architects who tell people what they want. We very much listen to what our clients have to say,” Nicola says. “Much of our experience comes from the domestic market and we’ve encountered ‘architect fear’ plenty of times. We want to change the way architects are perceived...” “We always try to exceed expectations,” Richard adds. “When we look at all the referrals we are getting and the positive feedback, it seems that this philosophy works well.” “We enjoy working on many different projects, from multi-million pound regenerations of whole streets to small porch extensions,” Nicola continues. “The big projects can be very exciting but we get as much pleasure from working in the domestic market.”

“People tend to shy away from green architecture because they assume it will be an added expense,” says Richard. “That’s another perception we’d like to change. The truth is if you get the basic, rather un-sexy stuff right, green architecture can be very affordable. “We want to let people know that by employing an architect you don’t only get added value, you often save money. Our experience with planners and regulatory bodies means we get things right the first time, saving our clients’ money in the long run. If you add that to the money you can save through energy efficient design, you start to see the benefits. “We never want people to build something they aren’t entirely happy with, so our first ideas and designs are never set in stone. A builder may suggest a solution that is the cheapest or easiest route, based on their building experience. However, we will always push for the best solution possible. We want all our clients to be more than satisfied with the final result – we want them to be overjoyed. We certainly are not about enforcing our style on people, but with our design experience, we will maximise the space and realise the potential of an existing building or site – things that someone without our experience might not even consider.” “To dispel this architect fear we always offer a free initial consultation with no commitment to take things further,” Nicola adds. “We work on a fixed fee basis so there are no hidden costs. He began to realise this vision when he purchased 500 acres of land and started to build Lancing College, and the foundations of its famous Chapel in 1868. This was the first of the Woodard Schools, which reflect his aim “to provide a good and complete education... of sound principle and sound knowledge, firmly grounded in the Christian faith”. Lancing College is one of the UK’s leading independent schools. Ofsted’s two latest boarding reports have rated it as ‘Outstanding’. Their January 2011 report states “The overall quality rating is outstanding...The school ethos fully

embraces boarding, which is seen as a vital and vibrant element of the school... Boarders felt living at the school was ‘brilliant... like living in one big happy family’”. As the school makes no distinction between boarders and day pupils, other than in accommodation needs, this positive report applies to all students. The academic results are consistently good: students achieve excellent examination results and a high level of entry to their first choice universities. For the past seven years, Lancing's percentage of A-B grades at A Level has been above 80 per cent. But a Lancing education is about much more than academic achievement. The standard of music at Lancing is very high, with 20 to 30 music scholars in the school at any time. Ella Taylor, aged 16, an A Level student, is currently BBC Radio 2’s young female chorister of the year. She is a dedicated member of the Lancing College Chapel Choir, which sings in services in the Chapel every week, and tours to major churches and cathedrals including Westminster Abbey and St George’s Chapel, Windsor. One of the youngest music scholars at Lancing, William Rowland, recently won the Choir Schools’ Composition Prize for his anthem Give Me, Lord, A Full Faith. His prize was a performance of his piece by the world-famous Choir of Westminster Abbey, and it was recently performed again, by Lancing College Choir, in the Chapel. While tuition provided by the music school creates an environment in which students of exceptional ability aim for the highest standards, all pupils are encouraged to make music. There are opportunities across every discipline: classical instrumental, jazz, swing, rock, contemporary music and composition. On Friday 6 May, musicians from Lancing College will perform with Chris Barber and the Big Chris Barber Band at Worthing Pavilion in a Celebration of Light Music. The performing arts are enhanced by a flourishing drama department and recent productions have included My Fair Lady, Amadeus and Blood Wedding. Lancing’s art department, which stages public exhibitions, has an impressive record of producing students who become designers, photographers, architects, art historians and painters. The new art school is an energy efficient, contemporary building, with excellent facilities for painting, drawing, photography, pottery, sculpture, print-making and set design. The finest work produced by current A Level and GCSE students is on exhibition at the DMH Stallard headquarters in Crawley until 18 March.

Lancing has a very successful sports department. The cross country team won all their races last term, beating competitors from many other leading schools. In football, Elliott Taylor was recently selected for the Sussex county U16 Team. His brother, Joe, has made the county team at U15 level, and has started a trial with Portsmouth FC. Pupils of all abilities are encouraged to participate in a wide range of sporting activities from football to fencing, ballet to badminton. Students are also given opportunities to work on the college farm and to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and CCF.
