PRIVATE LETTING AGENTS Private letting agents’ services and charges in Brighton and Hove are to be reviewed by a cross-party group of councillors. The decision to create a council scrutiny panel follows concerns raised by a recent Citizens Advice Bureau report, which claimed that 94 per cent of letting agents surveyed nationally imposed additional charges on tenants. As part of the panel’s evidence gathering local housing experts

and letting agents are invited to share their thoughts with the panel at a meeting on Friday 17 December at 10am at Hove Town Hall. The chair of the scrutiny panel, Councillor Paul Elgood, said: “Brighton and Hove has the sixth largest private rented sector in the country, with thousands of residents having dealings with letting agents. “We need to get a better picture of what the issues are locally, why these charges are being imposed and what, if anything, can be done about them.” If you cannot attend but still wish to give evidence to the scrutiny panel, please: email scrutiny@brighton-hove.gov.uk

No Windows 7 system DVD? If your PC did not come with a physical DVD to conduct system repairs you can simply burn your own from scratch. Follow these instructions: Click the START icon and then type REPAIR. If given options select the CREATE A SYSTEM REPAIR DISC option, otherwise this will be pre-selected. Insert a DVDRW and then click the CREATE DISC button and follow the instructions. Using this disc you cannot reinstall Windows but you do have some useful disaster recovery tools.

Suspect your hard disk is faulty? To establish if your hard disk (HD) is at fault you do not always need to call a Geek. Why not try to find out if your HD has errors on it yourself? To do this, click the START icon and then select COMPUTER. Then select DETAILS from the drop down view list (the arrow pointing down in the top right hand corner of the explorer Window). If you have more than one physical hard disk drive in your computer you may see various hard drives listed (these will be listed as LOCAL DISK under the Type heading). This is possible with a workstation but extremely rare with a laptop. Your operating system will normally (99% of the time) be installed on the C drive. Assuming you think C is at fault right click on it and select PROPERTIES from the menu given. Then select TOOLS, CHECK NOW and the START button. If you have other drives that you think are faulty repeat this process.

e are well into the advent countdown to festive parties, hangovers, panic shopping and an awful lot of food. But nothing evokes a bit of Christmas spirit as much as bringing home and decorating your Christmas tree. This week, we bring you a seasonal selection of trees for all spaces and places.

Which tree, where? According to the British Christmas Tree Growers Association (BCTGA) around 70 per cent of us prefer a real, living tree. But not everyone has room or inclination for a full-sized (or even miniature) real tree. If you are short on space, find carrying a real tree home difficult, don’t want the mess or simply prefer a more contemporary look, there are plenty of alternatives. Forget the natural look: coloured and fibre-optic pre-lit trees remain popular this year. We love Debenhams’ black and red sequin tree. For tight spaces, choose a super slim ‘pencil’ tree. If you’ve only got a corner free, Marks & Spencer are actually selling a ‘corner tree’ this year, which has only partial branches. Many people think fake trees are a greener option because they can be re-used. Do remember though that fashions change, many are manufactured in the Far East – using petro-chemicals in their transportation here – and, if not re-used, will end up in a landfill site somewhere. So if you choose a fake tree, make sure you love it and re-use it. For a really eco-friendly version, John Lewis sell a rather fabulous paper tree made from recycled paper.

Greener trees

The strongest trend this year is for a good, old-fashioned real tree. Real trees are probably the most environmentally friendly choice as they can be planted out and reused or recycled for wood chippings and mulch. and sold to garden centres and shops, although it is possible to buy direct from the growers if you visit Christmas tree plantations. Some growers (like Wilderness Wood, near Uckfield, www.wildernesswood.co.uk) even allow you to choose and dig up your own tree. If you can’t buy direct, look for one labelled as grown in Britain by a member of the BCTGA . This indicates the tree is good quality and freshly harvested. The more local the supplier, the better. To look after your real tree – whether or not it has roots – and to make sure it lasts, bring it indoors at the last possible moment, keep it away from radiators, and water it regularly. It may need up to a quarter of a gallon of water each day. And if you’re not planting it outside to use next year, then please do recycle. The BCTGA estimate that in London alone, 976,000 Christmas trees are thrown away and only 10 per cent are recycled for mulch and woodchips. All that glitters The best bit, of course, is adding the tree decorations. This year, we still love all things quaint and nostalgic: gingham ribbon, bright coloured candy sticks, and traditional glass, tin and wooden ornaments. Simple, old-fashioned – even home-made – decorations bring out the festive spirit in everyone. Nature inspires another key trend, with dried flowers, garlands of hops, fruits, seeds, or shells, eucalyptus and ivy-covered wreaths. But if you really want to see this challenging year out with a bang (or a sparkle), go with colour and shine. And lots of it. Sequins, glitter, silver and crystal ornaments, flowers and anything that sparkles will chase away the winter blues. Is it true that as an employee I can refuse to work if it is too cold? For workers who work inside, certain regulations set out the rules on workplace temperatures. The general rule is the workplace temperature should be at least 16°C. However, there is no legal right to vacate the workplace as a result of extremes of heat and cold. In very cold weather, outdoor workers face two major health problems: hypothermia and frostbite. There is therefore extensive HSE guidance about protective clothing for cold weather, health issues and management guidelines. If you feel it is too cold at your workplace, speak to your employers and arrange an agreement, which will make you feel more comfortable at work.

As an employer can I dock the pay of an employee who has arrived to work late the morning after the company Christmas party? If an employer wishes to be able to make deductions from employees' pay in the event they are late the morning after the company Christmas party, it should include the right to do this in its contracts of employment. An alternative would be to ensure the employees in question have, in advance of the party, signed a separate document that clearly indicates their agreement to a quantifiable deduction being made in these specific circumstances. Another course of action would be to make it clear to staff in advance that disciplinary action will be taken against any employee who fails to turn up, or turns up late, the day after the Christmas party and there is reason to believe that the nonattendance/lateness is due to over-consumption of alcohol. It is also advisable that plenty of food and non-alcoholic drinks are available at the party itself. Other than that, Happy Partying!
