Andrew Kay finds sugary TV completely Pointless

A

few days sick in bed has left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Two bad tastes to be frank, once caused by the hideously manky tonsils that waggled angrily at the entrance to my throat last week, the other by daytime TV. I spent most of the time in a hot lemon, manuka honey and paracetamol daze, drifting in and out of fevered sleep. I believe in manuka honey, but at fifteen quid a jar, I sort of feel obliged to believe in it. Of course the honey did give me some energy, a good thing as I could hardly swallow. But food wasn’t the only thing I couldn’t swallow last week. Once I returned to some semblance of normality I tried whiling away the days with some TV. Well, what is going on? I mean really, it’s a diet of puerile pap pumped out for the masses in sugary-sweet dollops. The daytime dramas are almost universally atrocious, cut-price medical detectives, medical soaps, soapy detectives and medicated detectives. I flicked through the channels but it was all much of a muchness. I even gave the infamous Loose Women a try, but to be honest, they were as loose as the collective support garments that some of them had clearly piled into. It was as embarrassing as having your mum tell you about her sex life. Hideous. “I believe in manuka But where I really had to honey but at fifteen draw the line was with a show called Pointless. Now, I accept that daytime quiz shows will be quid a jar, I sort of feel pretty silly with cheapo prizes obliged to believe in it” and when it comes to prizes this one is very cheap, not much cash and very few winners anyway. But what really grates is that for all the world this is brained-up Family Fortunes. Analyse the way it works and there’s little difference in the format, except that where they had a cheesy comic at the helm of Family Fortunes we now have a couple of public schoolboys in nice suits with a cute line in witty banter and self-deprecation. Oh, and their claxon is not quite so dumb sounding. So instead of seeking the highest scoring answers in a survey, the teams have to seek out the lowest ones, and that’s the only real difference. I rather like the Armstrong chappie, he seems like a nice sort, not unlike most of the characters he plays in his comedy show with Ben Miller. And the other guy is okay if you like the sort of smarty-pants guys who you know your mum will like. But where does this drivel come from? I turned it off in disgust and also in fear that it would make me scream and cause a relapse. My throat was far too sore to risk that. Repackaging the same old stuff seems to be the flavour of the day. On TV Downton Abbey, good as it seems, is merely Upstairs Downstairs without the fun of Jean Marsh, Ruby and Mrs Bridges. When it comes to the property shows, the formula is identical across all the channels, with a couple of bickering presenters trying to find homes for people who either have unfeasibly large budgets, or ridiculously small ones. Grand Designs remains watchable, although I can’t help thinking that Kevin’s role these days is more counsellor than design guru. All those poor people discovering that they don’t have the right cash/planning permissions/support from their loved/un-loved ones. It’s become as dark as an episode of EastEnders but without the humour of my much loved Coronation Street. Being bedridden did give me a chance to catch up on the ‘Street’. What perfect bliss, what charm and wit and innocent joy. Well, that’s if you can wade through the murderous neighbours, philanderers, con-men, slatterns, thick-lads, shrews, duffers, curmudgeons and teenage lesbians. But despite all that it does still stay close to its roots and deliver entertaining drama on a regular basis and with the aid of the laptop I did manage to catch up in time for their amazing 50th anniversary live show in a few weeks time.

es/No Productions completed purchase of The Old Market in Hove in August and are busy planning an exciting programme of artistic events for the opening of the venue in the spring of 2011. The company facilitates the multifaceted work of Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, best known for their global theatrical phenomenon Stomp. Stomp; a unique blend of percussion, choreography and physical comedy, has continued to captivate audiences across the world since its humble beginnings as a dustbin routine on the streets of Brighton in the early ‘80s. Since Stomp's inception, Yes/No Productions has continued to produce an eclectic body of work in film and theatre. Along with their new show The Lost And Found Orchestra, which takes the concepts behind Stomp to a whole new level, Luke and Steve have also created and developed a number of critically acclaimed long-format and feature-length films, imaginative programming for TV and a string of successful TV commercials. They are currently in production on projects including two 3D large format underwater films as well as other 3D/2D film projects. Yes/No Productions understand that The Old Market is a true treasure for Brighton and Hove artists. In fact, it was in this very building that Luke and Steve first met while working on a project in the early ‘80s. Since then, they have recorded and rehearsed there many times and believe this service should be provided for other musicians, choirs and orchestras. The hall has a wonderful acoustic quality that rivals the best in the UK, and needs to be preserved and promoted to its full potential. They intend to install state of the art digital recording and post audio equipment to maintain The Old Market as a world class recording facility and venue. The hall also provides great rehearsal and workshop space. The large size and amenities make this an ideal space for building creative ideas in theatre and movement. Yes/No has struggled to find good rehearsal spaces for Stomp and other productions in the past and so recognise the needs of local artists. They intend to make the main hall available for theatre and dance development for other local performance groups. They also believe they can utilise their significant experience in multimedia arts production to help and administrate premiering new and local works at the venue at key times including, but not limited, to Brighton's festival seasons. The Old Market will be closed for a short period of time while they make improvements to the on-site facilities. Meanwhile, they are continuing to meet artists and producers to further their creative vision for the space. Yes/No bought the derelict Astoria building on Brighton’s Old Steine back in 2001, with the sole intention of restoring it back to its former glory and turning it into a multi-functioning cinema, theatre and community arts space. After years of neglect, they had to spend large amounts of money structurally safeguarding the building, and more in the investigation of possible funding, grants and possible developmental partners. After facing insurmountable costs in getting the property back to even a basic functioning level they were, sadly, forced to sell it. Contrary to rumours in the media, Yes/No did not make any money on the purchase and, in fact, spent vast amounts of time, energy and funds trying to save the building. They are now very glad to be investing in such an important local venue and are looking forward to an exciting future for The Old Market.

news >OVER 61,000 NEW TENANTS ENTER THE RENTAL MARKET Tenant demand continues to reach new heights in Brighton according to Countrywide, the UK’s largest letting agent and property services Group. Local letting agent Countrywide Residential took part in the UK-wide research which revealed that in ‘quarter three 2010’ with over 61,000 new tenants registering for rental accommodation – a 19 per cent increase compared to the previous quarter.

According to the latest figures from Countrywide’s network of 1,300 letting and estate agency branches, the number of tenants looking for rental accommodation has jumped by 44 per cent during 2010 with July seeing over 20,000 applications – the highest number for a single month since records began. Hanna Ridges, branch manager said: “We are seeing a growing demand from tenants in Brighton and Hove, which is seeing properties having lets agreed before the previous tenants contract has ended. The Landlady The Landlady travels light for an Indian summer

I

know I’m only just back from Cuba, but in a few days time I’m off to India and Dubai for ten days to repeat roughly the same trip I did in January this year. I am only able to afford such copious travelling because of the low interest rates. Long may they continue... As usual – even though the flights were booked way back in February – I have yet again neglected to sort out my Indian visa, and have just had to rush up to London at the last minute, in order to arrange it. At least we’re not in the grips of Siberian weather as we were last time I attempted this, when my passport got stranded in a Post Office van on the snow-logged M23, two days before I was due to depart. This time, rather than travelling solo, I shall be travelling with a female friend from London who last visited India over 20 years ago. She seems determined to take her own loo roll, even though I’ve told her “I receive regular that these days it’s not necessary, (although it would bulletins about suitcase be, somewhat ironically, if we were going to Cuba). She is also sizes and what’s being rather worried that I am taking stuffed in them” only hand-luggage with me. This is usual for me, as when I’m travelling I generally move about a lot and do not wish to lug my entire wardrobe along with me. I’d also rather not spend an hour idling by the luggage carousel waiting nervously for my suitcase at 3am, when I could be snoring away in bed. Having said that, if I’m travelling with friends, I really don’t mind how much luggage they bring with them as they will definitely be the ones who have to carry it. It seems, however, that we have already entered into a ‘competitive packing’ type of scenario and I receive regular bulletins from London about sizes of suitcases, what is being stuffed into them, etc. I’m keeping schtum about the size and contents of my luggage, not to annoy my friend, but mainly because I will not be packing until the eleventh hour. I always take the same things away with me anyway. Fortunately, my friend has a similar plan to my own when it comes to the places we want to visit in India and we’re hoping to do a triangular city-mountain-beach-type thing. In Dubai, we’ll mainly be seeing very drunken friends of mine who relocated there ten years ago. One thing that is slightly worrying, having last night read The Rough Guide, is that you are advised to wear Wellingtons in one of the areas in India we’re planning to visit because of the abundance of leeches. I may have to re-think the configuration of my hand-luggage.

Robert Nemeth on The Nook’s eco makeover

A

quite dreadful feature of Brighton is the dreary series of imposing office buildings overlooking Preston Park. There were once Victorian villas, and now only one remains at the foot of Lovers Walk. Lovers Walk is a gem of a road. It was once a footpath leading to Seven Dials but was transformed dramatically when the railway was built through it during the late 1830s. It became a cul-desac when the upper goods yard and Dyke Road Drive were built in 1878. Several distinctive properties are situated above the aforementioned villa including a delightful set of flint cottages. No. 3 is another large detached double-fronted villa and is tucked away at the top of the road, adjacent to a steep flight of stone steps which leads up to Dyke Road Drive above. Quite appropriately, it is named The Nook. The Nook has been “This project is not owned by Two Piers Housing about history, it’s simply Co-operative since 1984 and is currently undergoing about reducing the major works. It is not a restoration or conversion carbon footprint” though. The works, paid for by a Technology Strategy Board grant, relate solely to improving the house’s eco credentials. I heard about this building through Mischa Hewitt whom I first met when I wrote about the Brighton Earthship in Stanmer Park. Mischa is a Director of Earthwise Construction, the firm responsible for the building work on this project, and he kindly showed me the building’s various eco improvements. James Rae at BBM Architects, a quite appropriate firm for eco work, was responsible for much of the design work. The sides and back of the house have been smothered with five inches of thick exterior insulation. The front of the building, due to its ornate features, has been insulated from the inside. The sides and back of the building have triple-glazed NorDan windows whereas the front has double-glazed Vrogum windows. As one might expect, the roof is now home to a solar thermal panel. As a committed conservationist, I would have been looking to replace the missing balustrades on the front steps and change the concrete roof tiles for slate. But this project is not about history, it’s simply about reducing the energy footprint of this house (to 17kg of CO2 per annum apparently). It is unique in the way that the money – no small amount – has been spent solely on environmentally-friendly features. I

have a problem. I’m on two a day and sometimes more. I don't know how to give up. Or if I even want to. I used to think that I could stop whenever I wanted to, that I didn't need them, but now I am not so sure. I get really shivery and moody when I don’t have them. Perhaps I can wean myself off slowly. Recently, I am ashamed to say, I’ve been on three a day... Baths. Yes. Three baths a day. I know! I know what you are thinking: when woman? When do you have the “It’s a way of getting time! Well, sometimes I have one as soon as I get some calm if you have up. So by 8am I have already had bath number a four year old” one. Then another perhaps while doing the child’s bedtime. That’s two baths in one day; easily done and it’s not even 7pm. Then, if I am really cold I might have another one before bed. It’s a good job I don't have my water metered. It’s only recently after having ‘Mummy’s friend’ around to stay, that I’ve realised that I have this addiction to immersing myself in hot water a few times a day. I’ve noticed he goes for a smoke when he wants ‘me-time’ and I have baths. It’s a way of getting some calm if you have a four year old. I’ve realised bathing is the one of the only times my child will let me be in another room without her for more than five minutes. But my flat is so small that even in the tub I am three feet away from the lounge, so I can still listen or talk to her watching TV while I loll in the bath. Baths are my way to escape everyone and get some peace and solitude. Three a day is a bit much though, I’m surprised I have any skin left. I text ‘Mummy’s friend’ saying “Hey, I only had two baths today!” I think he was impressed I’m weaning myself off hot water. For me, baths are not for washing, but a time to lie down and be warm and peaceful. Maybe I should just turn the heating on/up or buy myself a Slanket? Might be cheaper on my gas bill. Bath-loving does not seem to run in the family. I have to offer incentives to the small child to enter the bath. Saying things like: “I’ve run you a swimming pool” while waving the rubber ring at her – that generally works. Or just: “Get in the bath or I’ll turn the blummin’ telly off!” Though I can bank on it that when I do want a quiet solo bath, she will definitely want one. These are not so relaxing. She forces me to straighten my legs out of the bath (towards taps), telling me off if I try to put them back in the warm water: “They’re not legs! It’s a bridge!”

I

’ve decided to dispense with grumpiness. However, I thought I’d spend this column in a final splurge of grumpiness, in the same way Frank Sinatra always used to go on tour to announce his retirement. Testing the value of this column to the limit, I’m going to concentrate on the really small stresses. They’re not even about the outside world (customer service, product numbers, world poverty) or the frustrations that go with fatherhood. No, this week it’s random inanimate objects that niggle away at my day. All well within my capability to put right, but have I put them right? No. Much comes from the need to declutter. For example, at least once a day, I have some sort of hook incident. Putting a coat on a hook, and the coat immediately falls off. Or taking a coat off a hook, and other coats fall off. (Keep awake at the back.) There are certain cupboards, that when I open them, something falls out. Often the same thing. I don’t sort it. Why not? I think it’s because they’re so minor, if I don’t fix it there and then, they don’t quite stay on the radar. They’re not big enough to learn from. If every time I walked into a particular room, I got punched in the face, yes, I’d remember that. (And no, Latest readers, please don’t write in with offers.) However, a coat falling off a hook, something inconsequential falling out a cupboard, happening roughly the same time each day, this is a more subtle Groundhog Day stress. Another: I have holes in many of my right-hand trouser pockets. It is caused by a mini screwdriver once ‘handily’ attached to my keys. This screwdriver was for glasses; I probably used it twice. Now, offset the convenience of being able to (very) “This week it’s occasionally tighten the arm of a pair of glasses, with the frequency random inanimate (a couple of times a day) when I’ve forgotten there’s a hole. Loose objects that niggle change drops out of these pockets at the most inconvenient times away at my day” (crossing a road, standing up on a packed bus). The screwdriver’s been discarded but the damage remains. Lastly, most stupidly, I have problems with my front door keys. Six years on, I still haven’t got the knack of opening my own front door. There’s no excuse (although there is something odd about the lock). All of these could easily be put right, so writing them down is my impetus to do so. Forgive me for using this week as a kind of back-of-envelope household to-do list, but perhaps I’ll be a less grumpy person by the end of it. I’ll report back in a few months about how I’ve got on. Brighton holds its breath.

Seasonal spread

Assuming you have all the basics (good sized table; ample seating etc, if not, make a mental note to hit the sales), glitter and luxury are key words for this year’s festive spread. For however hard the austerity drive bites, we are determined to make the best of it. Bring out the fine tablecloth (a table runner in this year’s crimson, purple or black silk would set crisp white linen off to a tee), the napkins, the crystal, and the silver. If you don’t have a matching set, go for quirky and eclectic – mix simple basics with pretty one-off pieces, charity shop finds, and add a bit of colour. CHRISTMAS DINNERS Latest Interiors has the know-how when it comes to a fab festive spread – and don’t be a Scrooge with the crackers

lmost everyone likes a Christmas dinner, and not necessarily just for the turkey. There’s something about a beautifully set Christmas table, replete with shining glassware, beautiful china, clean pressed napkins, crackers and an awful lot of sparkle that simply warms the heart – whatever your denomination or dietary preference. ‘Tis the season to be jolly, after all, and as everyone knows, once the calendar reaches December 1st all serious work grinds to a halt as we eat, drink and entertain ourselves silly. And what will the best-dressed seasonal tables be wearing this year? Latest Interiors gets into practice for the festivities...

Say it with flowers Light some tall church candles, and add a vase or two of beautiful, pure white or purple flowers. The organised among you might want to ask a local florist in advance to prepare a bouquet or table piece for the big day (and you don’t need to spend a packet – pretty, hand-tied bouquets should start at around £15), but it’s perfectly possibly to make something beautiful yourself. Lilies, poinsettia, berries and amaryllis are all traditional table pieces at Christmas – for a more contemporary look, opt for single stems of snowberries, chrysanthemums or roses in individual glass vases.

I look for when logging into any site. The surprise is that the look of the new site is bright, confident and refreshingly witty, but above all it works. I love the classic wallpaper background, which gives the whole a modern feel without losing the classic look of the brand. The introduction of a rich olive green adds class and, rather than reducing the red, black and white brand, it actually strengthens it. The whole look is friendly, softer but still business like. And when it comes to the business it certainly performs. Navigating around the site is easy. You are never more than a few clicks away from where you want to be and each of the departments is clearly flagged up. Barry explains: “This was an involved process. Employers have been urged to communicate their IT security policies more effectively after a survey revealed that ignorance and lack of understanding were major factors behind security breaches suffered by organisations. In a poll of 2,000 office workers by software security company Clearswift, one in four felt that their company “could be better” at communicating guidelines, with 63 per cent blaming ignorance or a lack of understanding for security breaches suffered by their organisation. One-third of those surveyed said that they had not received any training on IT security since joining their firm. Clearswift warned that this was “particularly concerning” since more than twothirds (62 per cent) of respondents joined more than five years ago.

Be Broadband has announced what it is describing as a 'pioneering' line bonding service which could boost customers broadband speeds with up to 44Mbps download and 5Mbps upload. The UK ISP believes that the line bonding technology could mean that those people within 1KM of the exchange could find their rate boosted from around 20Mbps up to more than 40Mbps. It is not cheap with the line bonding service monthly rental being £65 per month, plus setup costs and you will need two phone lines coming into a building from the same exchange.

Over a million mobile phones in China have been hit by a virus that steals contact information to commit click fraud and propagate the virus. The virus manipulates a security application to transmit the victim's SIM card details to a central server controlled by a group of hackers, who then send virus-ridden links to games and software, according to CNN. Anyone clicking on the link will infect their mobile

phones which is translated into a payment for a party publicising the links. Chinese mobile service providers have taken steps to reduce the number of infected messages, but telecoms experts have raised the concern that an updated virus might start sending messages at lower volumes and go unnoticed. The company that produces the targeted security application said it had nothing to do with the virus.

Google instant previews Google has updated its search capability with Instant Previews enabling users to see what a web page looks like before opening it. The Instant Previews feature comes just two months after Google Instant, which displays results as users type in search terms. Now users can find the right results even faster, says Google, by looking at snapshots of the webpages by clicking on the magnifying glass next to any search result and then hovering over further results.

Jailed for withholding password A teenager has been jailed for four months after refusing to hand over an encryption key for his computer to police. 19-year-old Oliver Drage from Lancashire was originally arrested for another alleged offence last May. In the course of that investigation police seized his computer however they could not get past a 50-character encryption password to find out what material was on the computer. Drage was then formally requested to disclose the password, but he failed to do so. He was then charged under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) 2000, and convicted after a trial at Preston Crown Court. A year ago, it was disclosed that RIPA was being used by local councils, the police and the security services around 1,500 times a day to investigate citizens.

Business aid Samantha Dickinson of local solicitors Dean Wilson LLP gives invaluable advice to the city’s thousands of small companies and employees This week: Employee Engagement Q: My company has recently made redundancies, which has left morale low amongst the remaining staff. How can I motivate people and make sure their increased workload doesn’t lead to ill-health and the like? A: Increased workloads and organisational changes inevitably risk an unhappy workforce and that will not only affect productivity but could lead to increased absence levels. Managed properly, though, you can take steps to reduce these risks. You have duties under the Equality Act 2010 and Health and Safety legislation to take care of your employees’ health and have common law duties too. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) report that levels of sickness absence are rising, as are levels of mental health problems, so it makes good business sense to take positive steps towards employee engagement.

Q: What does employee engagement entail? A: Staff who are committed to the company and its aims are engaged employees and there is a direct correlation between an engaged work force and creativity, performance and absence levels. The CIPD suggest the first step is to measure your employees’ existing attitudes; how you do that depends on the size of your organisation. Individual group meetings or surveys can help you understand what employees think about a number of factors related to their working environment, which will then help you recognise and address their concerns, be it in relation to communication, line management, staff pay and development and/or work/life balance. Giving employees freedom to voice their concerns and their ideas for improvement is one of the main drivers of employee engagement.

Q: Then what? A: Everybody likes to be listened to, but obviously you need to act upon the results of the survey and communicate your proposals to staff. Ask them to feed back and assist you with any action plan you might put into place as a result of the survey. Regular staff meetings and feedback opportunities let staff feel more involved in the company, as do regular social events. Q: This all sounds great in theory but I’m not sure I have the time to do this. A: There is no quick way to engaging employees but the time and effort you (and your managers) put in now will be rewarded by improved performance and morale in the future. A range of practical support and guidance is available on the websites of the Department for Business Innovation and Skills and also the CIPD.

Tenant demand continues to reach new heights in Brighton according to Countrywide, the UK’s largest letting agent and property services Group. Local letting agent Countrywide Residential took part in the UK-wide research which revealed that in quarter three (Q3) 2010 with over 61,000 new tenants registering for rental accommodation – a 19 percent increase compared to the previous quarter. According to the latest figures from Countrywide’s network of 1,300 letting and estate agency branches, the number of tenants looking for rental accommodation has jumped by 44 percent during 2010 with July seeing over 20,000 applications – the highest number for a single month since records began. A combination of record demand and supply issues have caused the total number of properties available to rent in the UK to fall by 6.9 percent in Q3 2010 compared to Q2 2010 - a 27 percent fall on the total number of properties available to rent in Q3 2009. There is now an average of 5.8 tenants vying for each property across the UK – up from 5.5 in Q2 2010. Whilst apartments made up the greatest percent of stock on agents books, two bedroom houses continue to be most popular with an average of 10.2 tenants vying for each property. In contrast to Q2 2010 when houses were the most sought after property type, demand for one and two bedroom apartments have jumped sharply, most notably in London and the North West. The latest findings also reveal that properties are being rented out within 13 days of entering the market – a reduction of one day compared to Q2 2010 and 7 days quicker than at the start of the year, with many properties let within hours of coming onto the market. Couples under 35 made up the highest percentage of new tenant applications in Q3 2010. However the demographic of tenants remained broadly similar to Q2 2010 levels despite the seasonal influx of student tenants experienced during the summer months. Closer to home, Countrywide is reporting an increase in demand for properties in all arrears of Brighton and Hove. Hanna Ridges , Branch Manager said; “We are seeing a growing demand from tenants in Brighton and Hove, which is seeing properties having lets agreed before the previous tenants contract has ended. “The shortage of properties is pushing up demand across the country, buy-to-let investors and homeowners looking to let out their property should contact their local Countrywide Residential Office to discuss what options are available.”
