Baking a Difference By: Jennifer Florendo

Local bakery Mitchies Munchies recently made a sweet dream come true for one 10-year-old boy

T

he national nonprofit organization Icing Smiles Inc. recently called upon the local bakery Mitchies Munchies to be a part of something sweet. Icing Smiles provides custom cakes and treats to families who are affected by the critical illness of their child. To families battling an illness, the simple things, such as a birthday cake, can become a luxury instead of the norm. Having a special cake baked and delivered can provide a temporary escape from the everyday worry while creating happy memories. On January 27, Mitchies Munchies delivered a dream cake to Joey, an incredible big brother to a little baby named Christian. Christian was born with thanatophoric dysplasia type 1. As the big brother, Joey always puts himself last to ensure that his family, especially his baby brother, is taken care of. “That’s a big responsibility for a 10 year old and a selfless act. I couldn’t think of a more deserving child to honor than Joey. I was so happy to donate his dream cake and couldn’t wait to reveal his surprise to him,” said owner Michelle Fable, aka “Mitchie.”

Mitchies Munchies is not your typical sweet stop. With things like their signature treat, a schmapple, (a tart, green apple dipped in buttery caramel and milk chocolate, swirled with white and dark chocolate before being topped with candy) and schnaks, like schmoreos, schmake schticks, schnibbles, schnak paks to name a few, Mitchie Munchies combines a fresh and innovative approach to standard sweets. However, Mitchies Munchies also creates the traditional treats, like cakes, for events such as weddings, birthdays and other celebrations.
