MCI Gave Its Approval For 21 New Medical Colleges

T

he newly formed board of the Medical Council of India, governed by Dr.K.K. Talwar, gave its approval for 21 new medical colleges. The approval was given to these institutions based on the report of the earlier board, headed by Dr.S.K.Sarin. Though 21 new medical colleges have been approved, the board has decided to re-inspect and re-assess these institu-

tions at random basis over the next three months. Dr.Purushottam Lal, one of the board members, said that they will investigate the colleges again within the next three months. The colleges have given declaration that they have the best of infrastructure. But if it is found unfit, they may also face legal action. The first phase of inspections started in January with

June 30 being the last date of giving approvals. The board may this time change the way inspection is done and even include bureaucrats and journalists in its inspection team to make the process more clear. And on the last day of giving approval, the MCI increased about 1,800 undergraduate seats. The total number of MBBS seats in the country now stands at 39,785. Court relief to OBC student denied admission to IIT-Delhi

T

he Delhi High Court on Friday came to the rescue of an OBC student who qualified for the joint entrance examination (JEE) for admission in IIT engineering colleges but was denied admission due to a technical glitch while applying online for the counselling. A vacation bench of Justice M.L. Mehta issued notice to the government and chairperson of JEE asking them to find a way to accommodate 18year-old Jitendra Kumar Bansal, who secured 748th rank in the OBC merit list in this year's JEE examination. The student approached the court for the issue of writ of mandamus (meaning to command) seeking production of records with regard to the procedure for admission to various undergraduate courses in the IITs conducted by JEE2011, especially the procedure as to the 'Choice Filling' online. "The petitioner got himself registered online, logging on to JEE counselling online portal as a first step for the online counselling. Accordingly, Bansal received the printed version of the result from chairman, JEE-2011, IIT

Delhi," said the petition. Later, he paid the registration fee and sent the requisite copies of the documents to the chairman, JEE, IIT Delhi. Meanwhile, Bansal was not able to register himself for the counselling, which he alleged was because of failure of the IIT's electronic server. After his repeated requests to IIT Delhi director and chairman to allow him admission failed to generate any favourable and concrete response, he knocked the court's door. Justice Mehta observed: "Since the candidate has qualified the examination, IIT should find a way to accommodate him. Imagine the hardship he will face if his plea is not considered." "The boy who has made it to this level should not be denied the right to appear in the counselling since it was only a technical error," he noted. Since the last counselling for admission is on July 10, the court has asked IIT Delhi to file its reply on July 4. "You find out a way or the court will issue an appropriate order," the bench said.

Surgery for Sleep Apnea Surgical intervention may be a viable alternative for some OSA patients; however, it is important to keep in mind that no surgical procedure is universally successful. Every patient has a different shaped nose and throat, so before surgery is considered your ENT Surgeon will measure the airway at several points and check for any abnormal flow of air from the nose to lungs. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) - If the airway collapses at the soft palate, a UPPP may be helpful. UPPP is usually performed on patients who are unable to tolerate the C-PAP. The UPPP procedure shortens and stiffens the soft palate by partially

the Soft Palate uses radio waves to shrink the tissue in the throat or tongue, thereby increasing the space in the throat and making airway obstruction less likely. Over the course of several treatments the inner tissue shrinks while the outer tissue remains unharmed. Laser-Assisted Uvuloplasty (LAUP) is a surgical procedure that removes the uvula and surrounding tissue to open the airway behind the palate. This procedure is generally used to relieve snoring and can be performed by the ENT surgeon uner general anesthesia. Hyoid Suspension - If collapse occurs at the tongue base, a hyoid suspension may be indicated. The hyoid bone is a U-shaped bone in the neck located above the level of the thyroid cartilage (Adam's apple) that has attachments to the muscles of the tongue as well as other muscles and soft

and helps to stabilize this region of the airway. Genioglossus Advancement (GGA) - GGA was developed specifically to treat obstructive sleep apnea, and is designed to open the upper breathing passage. The procedure tightens the front tongue tendon; thereby, reducing the degree of tongue displacement into the throat. This operation is often performed in tandem with at least one other procedure such as the UPPP or hyoid suspension. Maxillomandibular Advancement (MMA) - MMA is a procedure that surgically moves the upper and lower jaws forward. As the bones are surgically advanced, the soft tissues of the tongue and palate are also moved forward, again opening the upper airway. For some individuals, the MMA is the only technique that can create the necessary air passageway to resolve their OSA condition.
