INTRODUCTION Welcome to the

Liberty Garden Nature Retreat.

The 70 acres of this property are an independently owned and managed reserve that spreads out across a private valley and spans two ocean view ridges, each overlooking the Monterey Bay. Here, visitors enjoy a native habitat of exquisite beauty, restored by the current owner in a labor of love spanning the last 30 years through the systemic removal of undesired species, to cultivate a virgin ecological reserve. Along the way, he also put in modern recreational and meeting facilities to create a world-class resort setting for his inner circle. A broad range of uses can be explored, including development as a fullscale public resort, a corporate retreat, a private executive compound, a single grand estate, or subdivision into multiple private estate parcels that could share the central recreational areas and nature reserve. The crown jewel of the retreat its spectacular

pool complex, featuring a swim tank clad in a pebbled finish, with an Olympic-class diving board, beach entry and 85-foot infinity edge. Guests can lounge around the pool area on an elegant deck of Ipe wood that transitions to a high-grade Grecian tile hardscape. Other amenities include a heated swim spa, a large outdoor barbecue, and a luxurious kitchen. At the south end of the pool there are separate men’s and women’s lockers and showers, and to the west, a panoramic vista of scenic beauty, all contained within the preserve.

Beneath a low-profile exterior, the pool complex also houses within its walls a world-class conference facility with an office and board room plus separate media room, all with high-speed Internet, phone and video-chat capabilities, to serve the needs of the executive user. In keeping with the natural theme of Liberty Garden, the grounds of the pool area are tastefully fenced and landscaped with native plants from around the property, while nearby, a full regulation-size tennis court provides yet another venue for active outdoor recreation amidst its spectacular valley setting.


The existing pool complex is a masterpiece of integrated architecture formed

around the offset 70x30 foot design of its swim tank. Here, a semi-subterranean design blends the retreat center’s 1800 SF conference facility into the hillside with an additional 400 SF media room tucked into the far side of the structure. Interspersed amidst the remainder of Liberty Garden’s 70 acres are multiple additional outbuildings, each echoing the high design standards and quality construction that characterize every improvement the owners have put into both the land and the buildings upon it. Whereas many of these improvements were completed without permits, there are extensive photos, architectural drawings and engineering documentation which can be made available to the new owners of the property, describing in great detail the construction of each project in the event that they would like the existing buildings to be incorporated into a long-range development plan.

There are multiple ridgetop sites with ocean views inviting future development, and a land-use report has been commissioned by the owner, detailing the property’s current improvements and full range of potential uses. Access to Liberty Garden is controlled with a remote monitored gated entry. And although utilities are provided by PG&E, the facility has autonomous on-site solar and generator systems, thereby providing a secure experience completely independent of the outside world.

At every turn, the eye is greeted with artfully placed vignettes, designed to invite quiet reflection or social activity amidst a broad range of backdrops, each serving to impart a mood of timeless elegance and grace.


The current owner received accolades for his pioneering ecological work to

restore the natural California landscape and creek bed using an innovative method, termed “Unleashing the Native Seed Bank” that he conceptualized and implemented over the past 30 years. In so doing, he created a stunning oasis of native plant species that thrive around the property’s collection of natural springs, ponds and waterways. This ground-breaking project involved countless of hours of painstaking labor, with plant identification and seed bank management conducted under the guidance of Randall Morgan, a renowned environmental consultant and a fellow of the California Native Plant Society, and the project was showcased in the University of Wisconsin’s Ecological Restoration journal.

The Liberty Garden ecoscape includes rolling hills replendent with fields of wildflowers and indiginous species like Danthonium, a grass that can have a life span running hundreds of years for a single plant. And with the many miles of trails and multiple bridges that traverse these private lands, its guests are afforded convenient access to the retreat’s broad range of curated habitats.


It took an odyssey of restoration to transform

the environment at Liberty Garden from a population with over 90 percent non-native and invasive species to its present ecological habitat of over 90 percent native species. Today there is a dominant population with a widespread diversity of native plants, none of which are on the endangered list, and where the non-native species that have been allowed to remain were largely chosen due to pleasing aesthetic or food value.

LOCATION The Liberty Garden Retreat is located in Santa Cruz County, about 10 minutes

south of Santa Cruz, and about 5 minutes north of the Watsonville Airport. The property straddles the historic border between Aptos Rancho and Rancho San Andreas. The property has a La Selva Beach mailing address, but is closer in proximity to the beach community of Seascape which was developed in the 1980’s as a visitor destination with resort accommodations and vacation condos along with many owner-occupied homes that share the desirable location. The nearby village of La Selva is a quaint community with a longer history dating back to the 1920’s with an annual 4th of July parade and a private beach that is accessible only to residents and guests. Nearby recreation opportunities include the beach, Seascape Resort, Seascape Tennis Club and Rio Del Mar Golf & Country Club, all located within a 2-mile radius of Liberty Garden. Shopping and restaurants are also close by in nearby Seascape Village, with Deer Park Marketplace just 2 exits away and Capitola Mall about 5 minutes to the north. And along its western ridge, the property directly adjoins several luxury ocean view estates on small acreages with values that range into the multiple millions of dollars. To get to Liberty Garden, take the San Andreas Road exit and head towards the Ocean. Take the first turn on your left as you head down San Andreas Road onto Byers Lane, a couple hundred yards from the entrance to the Seascape Uplands community of luxury homes, and proceed to the main gate where access will be granted to the confirmed visitor.
