Georgina Ice confident about upcoming season The Georgina Ice are hungry for redemption. The team is looking to score more goals when the 2010-11 COJHL season kicks off next Friday at the Ice Palace against the Port Perry Mojacks. The team will hit the road to face off against Lakefield Sept. 26 and Uxbridge Oct. 1. Things are looking promising for Georgina, so far. The Ice went undefeated through their three preliminary round games at an Alliston tournament earlier this month, outscoring their opponents 15-5. Georgina also won both exhibition games they played. Players and coaching staff agree the team’s success hasn’t come without a lot of sacrifice and hard work, which they strive to continue if everyone sticks to the game plan. “This year’s team is very different,” said 20-year-old Mount Albert resident Jamie Murrell (No. 22), a right winger who returned to the Ice for his second season. “We have a very young team this year and it’s working. The young guys seem to be pushing the veterans to pick it up a notch. The coaches have been pushing us a lot in practice and it’s paying off, big time. The guys have also been doing a lot of off-ice conditioning to go along with our on-ice workouts. Everyone seems to be buying into the systems and we are all coming together.” Murrell’s teammate, 18-year-old Brandon Trimble, is also excited about his second year with the Ice. “We were the first team to get knocked out of the playoffs last season, but I guarantee that won’t happen again,” the Keswick resident said. “Our team is working together so much better this year. We have some new coaches who are teaching us new plays and systems and they’re working great so far. Guys are committing themselves to playing a higher tempo game. Everyone on the ice seems to have a much stronger work ethic.” “The coaches are all very optimistic for our chances during the season,” head coach Mike Sedore said. “The players have all been skating very well, so far. They know there are a lot of talented guys on our team, so each time they hit the ice they’re fighting for a job. There are still a few cuts to be made and players know it.” It will be a competitive season because three of the four teams to reach the semifinals in Alliston last season are league rivals to the Ice, Sedore added. There is one major adjustment that some of the younger players need to make before the puck drops for real, according to the coach. “Some guys just aren’t used to playing junior hockey yet,” the coach said. “The periods are 20 minutes long, so they need to learn how to pace themselves to last an entire game. The warm ups are more intense and players need to really use their time on the ice before the game to prepare and the guys need to commit 100 per cent to the systems we’re teaching them in order for us to be successful during the year.” Fans of the Ice?
