We’d like you to meet Fred...
Our society ought to put the most vulnerable people at the centre. Not as an act of generosity, but quite simply because we need them to help us be more human. Jean Vanier, founder of L’Arche
Many remain at risk of isolation, loneliness and abuse and live in a very small world with poor social networks. Many have no-one in their life except those who are paid to support them. In many cases that support is failing at a fundamental level. It does not meet one of the most important needs of all – the need to belong. L’Arche believes in the power of relationships to transform the lives of those whose deepest suffering is not their disability, but their experience of isolation and loneliness.
What makes us different is the attention we pay to building relationships and to the spiritual lives of people with learning disabilities. L’Arche celebrates people with learning disabilities and in doing so creates places of belonging where some of the most vulnerable people in society can live fuller lives. There are 11 L’Arche Communities across the UK providing a mix of commissioned and voluntary support to people with learning disabilities. Internationally, L’Arche operates in more than 35 countries.

People with a learning disability are often misunderstood and under-appreciated.
When Aaron met Fred It was an experience that has defined my life.
Fred is like no other man you’ve met before. Fred loves life, he loves animals, he loves people, he loves to sing loud enough so you can’t even hear your own thoughts, and most of all he loves Native American culture. Underneath it all is a man born with an intellectual disability. But the term disability does not define Fred. The moment you meet Fred, you won’t want to leave his presence. Aaron Phelps, former assistant at L’Arche Bognor.

In times of austerity the state often provides only the bare minimum of funding to keep a person with learning disabilities safe and secure.
With your help we can continue to build supportive Communities with and for people with learning disabilities and transform the lives of more people like Fred and Aaron. Join us in our mission to create a world where everyone belongs, where the contribution of each individual is valued.
Anything you can give will make a difference. Please use the form overleaf. Thank you.
