03 WORKSHOP II Architectural Association (AA) London 2018 VOXEL NEIGHBOURHOODS by Mostafa El-Sayed Team: Lara Niovi Vartziotis Bhavatarini Kumaravel Irfan Bhakrani Xiujunk Wang

CELLULAR AUTOMATA Cellular automata is a grid of cells that exist in one of a finite number of states, where a new generation is born by the application of a fixed rule on the grid, and the states re-determined. A voxel is a unit value on a regular three dimensi- onal grid. WORKSHOP BRIEF The workshop explores the generative potential of self-regulating neighbour- hoods of voxels that interact through simple local rule sets and result in complex organisations across large po- pulations. Experimenting through explicit models of interactions and observable patterns of agency the workshop explores the capacity for these systems to evolve structural elements with the capacity to self-structure. RESEARCH BRIEF The research seeks to evaluate a voxel neighbourhood system through stability. The inherent stability of the system is analysed and strategies to enhance it are evolved. The local rules and the initiali- zing seed of the cellular automata voxel neighbourhood are rated in terms of their stability quotients across iterations and the best rules and seeds deduced out of them are employed in an attempt to building systems of increased heights, employing the stabilizing strategies discovered.

SACRAL EXPERIENCES

This place is my own interpretation of the sacral. The central challenge of my construction is the feeling braking out after havening guided from darkness to light. An ideal place for the development of personal senses, autocatharsis and catharsis.

For ace to ping Infinity Mirror The Mirror-Lockers are placed facing each other. That means that each locker reflects the locker opposite to it, creating an infinity illusion. Closing the curtains, the infinity game stops and intimacy is created.

the Mirror-Locker A hostel room needs efficiency in its planning to create the best space possible. Thus, we suggest a locker with a mirror surface in its front to reduce the space and movement needed when using the mirror or the locker. photo floor plan 01

cconcept: boulders and ruins design: equilibrium The main concept of our design proposal is the circle, as a symbol of purity, completion and eternity. The design is based on three concen- tric circles and the radii that emerge from its center every 30 degree. The inner circle contains the functional nucleus (staircase, rest- and storage rooms), the middle circle includes the corridor that connects all the spaces and the outer circle the inner sanctum, the lookout point and the exhibitional space and history cham- ber, which are two seperatable spaces, able to host permanent and temporary exhibitions, in- dependantly from the rest of the building. The look-out point works as an antechamber to the breathtaking look-out point created centuries ago, the ruins of the chapel itself.

cconcept: boulders and ruins Inspired by the shapes and volumes of theroutes: catharsis The main principle for designing the routes for our proposition is to create a nod between the existing routes and the new ones: our building. The route starting from the Historic Village and passing through the gatelike boulders ends on the top of the building. From this point one may follow the old route south leading to the castle, enter the building to get through it to the Chapel of Sao Joao, or walk direclty to the west towards the Castle of Monsanto, to find the monumental staircase that leads di- rectly to the top of its walls.
