“Twenty-odd years ago, this was Pablo Escobar’s town, with an annual homicide rate that peaked at 381 per 100,000. In New York City that would add up to an almost inconceivable 32,000 murders a year.” “Architecture alone obviously doesn’t account for the drop in homicides, but the two aren’t unrelated, either.” Sergio Fajardo, Mayor of Medellin, 2005

EXCEL DATA: filtered and compatibilized with shapes

Questionary used by the Municipality in 2008 to do the survey

Selected questions to join:

Data provided by the municipality was refined and a new field was created so the join could be possible with ArcGis.

1) Do you know how to read and write more than one paragraph? 2) What was your last level of study? 3) How much did you make last month? 4) Are you happy with your life?

COBAMA (system to classify blocks)= 0 & BARRIO & MANZANA

Process CHALLENGES

STEPS

1) The same houses were not interviewed every year

1- Identify the libraries in the city

2) The city asked different questions each year

2 - Select useful data from excel charts

3) Some data does not mention from which house it belongs: it cannot be spatialized

3- Join the blocks with the data from different years 4- Determine a buffer for these libraries (a range of influence)

Considering: * The average human pace between 3 and 5 miles/hour * Because of the steep topograpy a slowest speed was used = 4 miles/hr * Each library should be within 10 minutes of each person Library range of influence = 0,4 miles

What we can conclude is that the levels of iliteracy are decreasing while levels of literacy are increasing in two of these libraries. Some of basic levels of education are being affected such as the increase in Primary Education. On the other hand, in Quintana iliteracy increased. This lack of stability in data makes me believe that these libraries are not being directly responsible fro alterations in literacy and quality of formation.
