FROM WASTE TO SCULPTURAL FORM MATERIAL AND PROCESS BOOK

LARA HOAD

PAPER MAKER AND ARTIST

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE MATERIALS AND PROCESSES WITHIN MY PRACTICE

:

MY INSPIRATION IS THE NATURAL WORLD, MATERIAL AND PROCESS, FASCINATED BY LICHEN, ITS FORM AND ROLE AS PART OF THE WOODLAND ECO SYSTEM, SPECIFICALLY WITHIN THE NEW FOREST, HAMPSHIRE. I AM INTRIGUED BY HOW ONE LIFE FORM CAN BE SUSTAINED FROM ANOTHER, CIRCULAR AND CONSTANTLY RENEWING. I USE TRADITIONAL PAPER MAKING TECHNIQUES TO MAKE HANDMADE PAPER, USING ABACA FIBRE AND DISCARDED WASTE PAPER COLLECTED FROM THE OFFCUTS OF ARTWORK, AS WELL AS LOCALLY SOURCED COLLECTED AND DRIED NATURAL MATERIALS. I EMBED THESE INTO THE PAPER, ALONG WITH WILD WOODLAND SEEDS. THE PAPER MAKING PROCESS IS RHYTHMIC AND REPETITIVE; CONTINUAL AND SLOW. THE PAPER FIBRES ARE BEATEN, PULPED AND FORMED INTO THIN SHEETS WITH DECKLED EDGES. THIN, OPAQUE AND FRAGILE. I USE PAPER MACHE TO BUILD THE ORGANIC SPHERICAL STRUCTURES USING A NATURAL CELLULOUS GLUE FROM CORN STARCH, MAKING THE FORMS BOTH SUSTAINABLE AND BIODEGRADABLE. THE INCLUSION OF WILD WOODLAND SEEDS INTO THE PAPER INTENDS TO RECREATE NATURAL ECO SYSTEM CYCLES; THE SCULPTURES BIODEGRADE, CHANGE FORM, RETURN BACK TO NATURE REGENERATING OR RECYCLING INTO SOMETHING NEW… AN INDELIBLE TRACE OF THEMSELVES. I COMBINE BOTH TRADITIONAL RED LIST ENDANGERED CRAFT WITH CONTEMPORARY PAPER MANIPULATION , TO CREATE DELICATE ORGANIC FORMS. MY AMBITION IS TO CREATE AN APPRECIATION FOR PAPER, FOR ITS MATERIAL QUALITIES, OFTEN INVOLVING THE USE OF THE HUMAN SENSES, OF SIGHT, TOUCH AND SMELL, WHILST ALSO CREATING AN AWARENESS FOR CONSCIOUSLY MADE ARTWORK WITH NATURE AND SUSTAINABILITY IN MIND. MATERIALS OF CHOICE ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS MATERIALS

RECYCLING

MY SCULPTURES START OUT AS COLLECTED WASTE MATERIALS; USED AND DISCARDED HEAVY WEIGHT PAPERS, WHICH I THEN BLEND INTO A FINE PULP

PAPER PULP THIS PROCESS BREAKS DOWN THE SHORT FIBRES IN THE PAPER, ALLOWING THE RECYCLED MATERIAL TO BE COMBINED WITH OTHER FIBRES

ABACA FIBRE

...

ABACA IS A SUSTAINABLE AND TRADITIONAL PAPER MAKING MATERIAL, AND IS POPULAR FOR HAVING STRONG, FRAGILE AND TRANSULCENT QUALITIES. THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE ONCE IT HAS BEEN PROCESSED AND COMPRESSED:

SUSTAINABLE

I BLEND THE ABACA PULP AND RECYCLED PAPER WITH A NATURAL CELLULOUSE TO ACHIEVE THE DESIRED CONSISTENCY AND MATERIAL PROPERTIES. THE RECYCLED PAPER GETS BLENDED WITH ABACA, ABACA FIBRE IS A SUSTAINABLE, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY MATERIAL SIMILAR TO A BANANA PALM.

NEW FOREST

THE NEW FOREST IS A LARGE SITE OF SPECIAL SCIENTIFIC INTEREST (SSSI) WITH A UNIQUE ECOSYSTEM FULL OF BIODIVERSITY.

MY FORMS ARE INFLUENCED BY THE ORGANIC SHAPES FOUND WITHIN NATURE, SUCH AS WASPS AND BIRDS NESTS. ALSO, THE WAY NATURAL MATTER ATTACHES AND GROWS TO A NATURAL FORM SUCH AS MOSS OR LICHEN, CREATING MICRO ECOSYSTEMS.

ORGANIC SHAPE

USING NATURAL TONES AND PIGMENTS INSPIRED BY LOCATION.

COLOUR PALETTE

I AM INSPIRED BY NATURAL MATTER THAT GROWS BY ATTACHING ITSELF TO ANOTHER LIVING ORGANISM, CREATING UNUSUAL TEXTURES AND MICRO ECOSYSTEMS.

COLLECTING MATERIALS I FIND A UNIQUE SATISFACTION FROM USING MATERIALS FORAGED AND FOUND WITHIN MY LOCALITY. YOU ADOPT A CONNECTION TO BOTH THE ENVIRONMENT AND LOCATION. THIS, I THEN EMBODY IN MY SCULPTURAL FORMS.

THE LICHEN GROWS WITHIN THE FOREST OFTEN, COMPLETELY COVERING THE TREE, CREATING A BLANKET OF TEXTURE. 'EVERNIA PRUNSTRI', 'USNEA' AND 'RAMALINA' LICHEN VARIETYS. I ONLY COLLECT LICHEN FOUND ON THE FOREST FLOOR SO I DO NOT DISTURB THE ECOSYSTEMS GROWING.

I COLLECT AND DRY DROPPED LICHEN FROM THE NEW FOREST TO USE WITHIN THE PAPER MAKING PROCESS. LICHEN IS NATURES POLLUTION INDICATORS, IN THE RIGHT CONDITIONS THEY OFTEN THRIVE.

LICHEN

MAKING PAPER

MY MATERIAL OF CHOICE HAS ALWAYS BEEN PAPER. I FIND MYSELF DRAWN TO ITS MATERIAL QUALITIES. TANGIBLE, STRONG, FRAGILE AND OPAQUE.

RHYTHM A MAKER SHOULD BE AT ONE WITH THEIR MATERIALS AND PROCESS. PAPER MAKING CREATES A SENSATION OF EMBODIMENT, USING MOTION AND RHYTHM.

PATIENCE REPETITTION REQUIRES PATIENCE. THE REPEATED MOTION OF MAKING PAPER AND ITS DRYING TAKES TIME. GOING THROUGH THIS PROCESS WITH THE PAPER FROM ITS ORIGINS TO ITS FINISHED PRESSED FORM IS THERAPEUTIC AND REWARDING.

MATERIAL QUALITY HANDMADE PAPER HAS A CERTAIN UNIQUE QUALITY. A DECKLED EDGE IS CREATED FROM USING A MOULD AND DECKLE. THIS GIVES THE PAPER A FRAGMENTED EDGE. MAKING THE PAPER BY HAND GIVES ME CONTROL OVER THE THICKNESS, COLOUR AND ROUGHNESS, ALLOWING ME TO CREATE THE DESIRED THICKNESSES FOR MY SCULPTURAL FORMS.

HANDMADE ABACA PAPER

WITH DRIED LICHEN. MADE USING ABACA FIBRE, RECYCLED WASTE PAPER AND NATURAL CELLULOSE.

MY PAPER INCLUDES: DRIED AND PRESSED HAND-PICKED FLOWERS, DRIED LICHEN AND WILD WOODLAND SEEDS. THE INCLUSION OF THE WOODLAND SEEDS IS TO ENCOURAGE GROWTH IN PLACE OF THE DISINTERGRATED SCULPTURAL FORMS. LEAVING A TRACE AND RETURNING SOMETHING POSITIVE BACK TO NATURE.

P A P E R S A M P L E S

PROCESS HAS ALWAYS BEEN A FOCUS OF MY WORK, I MOVE FROM ONE PROCESS TO ANOTHER, CHANGING THE WAY THE PAPER IS CREATED AND USED. THE KEY PROCESSES SEEN WITHIN MY WORK ARE PAPER MAKING, PAPIER MACHE AND MANIPULATION.

PROCESS

I USE TRADITIONAL PAPER MAKING EQUIPMENT WITHIN MY WORK. BELOW, I AM USING A MOULD AND DECKLE, THIS IS A FRAME THAT FORMS THE PAPER INTO SHEETS. PAPER MAKING IS ONE OF THE MANY CRAFTS THAT ARE LISTED AS CRITICALLY ENDANGERED.

SCULPTURAL FORMS

THE COLLECTION OF MY FINAL FORMS MADE USING HANDMADE PAPER.

BIODEGRADABLE ART MY WORK HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO BE BIODEGRADABLE. I HAVE CONSCIOUSLY CHOSEN TO USE MATERIALS THAT CAN BREAK DOWN, EITHER TO BE RECYCLED INTO SOMETHING NEW OR BE RETURNED BACK TO NATURE.

CIRCULAR MODEL

MY FORMS ARE DESIGNED TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF WASTE PRODUCED DURING ALL AREAS OF PRODUCTION.
