Adopt A Park Programs & Greenbelt Trail Looking for a way to give back to the community? Help us maintain our beautiful parks and greenbelt areas by sponsoring sections of the greenbelt or a city park. Adopt A Park The City of Laramie has also entered into agreements with individuals or groups to assist with maintenance of parks in the community. Like the Greenbelt sponsorship, the agreements are for two years. This volunteer program is sponsored by the Parks & Recreation Department and encourages citizens to get involved in the care of our parks. This volunteer program is sponsored by the Parks & Recreation Department and encourages citizens to get involved in the care of our parks. Adopt a Park agreements are typically with an individual or a group with a common interest in a specific park or recreation area. For more information call 721-5267. Adopt A Trail in the Greenbelt The Laramie City Council adopted plans for a bicycle trail master plan in 1999 which included the Laramie River Greenbelt. From the observation of wildlife, birds, wetlands, and vegetation, people, young and old can learn about nature and better understand the ecological importance of the Greenbelt. The Optimist Park trail head includes a playground, sheltered picnic area and fenced in dog run area. There are memorial benches located along the trail for relaxing and enjoying the scenery. The Parks, Tree and Recreation Advisory Board has opened quarter mile sections of the Greenbelt trail for adoption. Groups or individuals that adopt have a two year contract that must be approved by the advisory board. Each year the contract requires a $75.00 payment for the signage that is placed on the adopted section of the trail.

Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM) The City of Laramie mosquito control program is an Integrated Mosquito Management Program (IMM), as recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It considers many various forms of control and uses the most environmentally friendly methods of control available that will achieve the desired control outcomes. IMM programs use pesticides, but only after a systematic monitoring of pest populations indicates that there is a need. All mosquito control products used within the United States fall under EPA guidelines and are evaluated for safety by EPA before being registered for use. The City of Laramie has chosen its pesticides based on several factors including: environmental impacts, cost, effective use in our cool climate, and citizen sensitivities. Community Forest News Winter Tree Care: The main focus of tree care in winter, especially for evergreen trees, is to keep the soil moist. During periods of no snow cover find a day above 40 degrees when high winds are not expected. Water the ground around trees from the trunk extending outside of the tree crown dripline. Using a garden hose, water slowly with a sprinkler or just a low flow from the hose, moving it frequently. Frozen soil may not allow all the water to soak into the soil. Avoid runoff or water pooling, but water what you can.

Parks

Late winter is the best time for pruning most tree species, but it can be done whenever trees are dormant. Maple and birch trees will bleed sap out of pruning cuts, so pruning mid-summer on these trees may be more desirable. Common reasons for pruning are to remove deadwood, weak, and broken branches. Prune just outside the swollen area, called the branch collar, where a branch joins a larger one. Hire a professional if the job requires you to physically leave the ground. Slacklines and Hammocks – Not allowed in City Parks: Slacklines and hammocks are becoming more popular in Laramie parks. Both of these systems involve being tied between two solid supports and usually trees are used. Laramie Municipal Code Chapter 12.52 - RULES AND REGULATIONS, 12.52.010 - Damaging vegetation, does NOT allow hammocks, slacklines or other things to be attached in any way to trees. The specific wording in the code states: “No person (other than authorized city employees) shall damage, cut, carve, transplant or remove any tree or plant or injure the bark, or pick the flower or seeds of any tree or plant. Nor shall any such person attach any rope, wire or other contrivance to any tree or plant, dig in or otherwise disturb grass areas, or in any other way injure or impair the natural beauty or usefulness of any area in the park.” If you have access to private property trees or acquire permission to use private property trees to set-up hammocks or slacklines, there are proper ways to do the set-up with the least amount of damage to trees. Tree trunks need to be more than 12 inches in diameter or more than 38 inches in circumference. Check the health and condition of the tree including any visible signs of root weakness. Don’t use dead trees. Make sure there are no dead, broken or weak limbs above. Trees with thick bark should be used. Conifer trees such as, spruce, fir, lodgepole pine, and limber pine have thin bark and should not be used. Don’t use aspen, birch or other smooth barked trees. Older and healthy cottonwoods usually have furrowed bark thick enough to support hammock and slackline attachments. Also, older Ponderosa pine, ash and elm trees usually have thick furrowed bark. Use thick felt type padding or thick burlap padding under a strong webbing material, which is at least two inches wide, to go around the tree trunk. Don’t use rope around the trunk because of the low amount of surface area in contact with the padding and bark.

Tree Planting Cost Share: The Shawver Tree Fund was established in 2013 by the Rotary Clubs of Laramie to honor the life and community interest of Charles “Chuck” Shawver. City of Laramie residential property owners, including the owners of rental houses, can apply to the city for the purchase and delivery of new trees to be planted along city streets abutting their residential property. The Shawver Tree Fund will pay half the cost of the tree and delivery. The property owner pays the other half of the cost. The city will purchase and deliver the trees to the residence in spring and late summer. The property owner will be responsible for the planting and the care of the new trees. Up to $125 per tree for a total of $500 per property owner, per calendar year, will be available as a cost share from the Shawver Tree Fund. Trees are ordered by the city at quoted wholesale prices. We are beginning our fourth season of providing trees to Laramie property owners participating in the Shawver Tree Fund planting program. Shawver Tree Fund – Tree Planting Program information, which includes the policy and application, is available online at cityoflaramie.org. Type ‘Shawver Tree Fund’ in the search box. If you have questions concerning trees on your property, in the right-of-way adjacent to your property or you would like additional information on the Shawver Tree Fund Program contact, Randy Overstreet, City Arborist, at roverstreet@ cityoflaramie.org or by phone at 721-5338.
