Parks Shawver Tree Fund

The City of Laramie and Rotary Clubs of Laramie have partnered to create the Shawver Tree Fund, in memory of Chuck Shawver. The fund is set up to replace dying, decayed and dangerous trees and to help provide additional trees within public use areas such as community entrance corridors or along City rights of ways where more trees are needed to fill in or extend shade tree plans, play lot parks, and new parks. For more information on the Shawver Tree Fund please contact City Arborist Randy Overstreet at roverstreet@cityoflaramie. org or 721-5338 or visit: www.cityoflaramie.org/trees Bench and Tree Memorials Memorialize the memory of your loved one with a tree or bench placed in a City park. A plaque may be placed by memorials or donations if desired by the donor. The Parks & Recreation Department accepts donations of trees, shrubs and park benches for beautification and enhancement of the City Parks and Recreation areas. Prior to planting or installation, the Parks staff must approve the donation and the location. The donor may plant the tree or shrub they have donated with the assistance of Parks staff members. All tree donations and memorials purchased from the City are invoiced at wholesale cost. Community Forest Stewardship Plan The Community Forest Stewardship Plan has been completed for a long range management system and policies for tree care and placement, throughout public spaces, right of ways, and parks system. To learn more about the plan and view digitally, please contact City Arborist Randy Overstreet at roverstreet@ cityoflaramie.org or 721-5338 or visit: www.cityoflaramie. org/trees Cirrus Sky Technology Park Trail Project Construction of an 11ft. concrete trail on the bluff overlooking the City of Laramie from 15th St.-30th St., will be constructed in 2016 as part of the Cirrus Sky Development Project. Anticipated completion is by end of year 2017. Jacoby Ridge Rural Trail Construction is underway and set to be complete by end of summer 2017. This area surrounded by the Jacoby Golf Course on the west, Willet Dr. on the south, Crow Dr. on the north and a State Section on the east is the site of the Jacoby Ridge Rural Trail. The Jacoby Ridge Rural Trail is a crusher fine trail intended for use by pedestrians and bicyclists alike. Use and/or crossing of this trail by vehicles could damage the trail tread making it impassible by the intended users. The City of Laramie and the University of Wyoming are alerting residents that the area of land east of the Jacoby Golf Course will no longer be open to unauthorized motor vehicles. Local law enforcement will be patrolling the area for violators. For more information please contact the City of Laramie, Parks & Recreation Department at 307.721.5269.

Help us maintain our beautiful parks and greenbelt areas by sponsoring sections of the greenbelt or a city park. Adopt A Park The City of Laramie has also entered into agreements with individuals or groups to assist with maintenance of parks in the community. Like the Greenbelt sponsorship, the agreements are for two years. This volunteer program is sponsored by the Parks & Recreation Department and encourages citizens to get involved in the care of our parks. Adopt a Park agreements are typically with an individual or a group with a common interest in a specific park or recreation area. Adopt a Park agreements are typically with an individual or a group with a common interest in a specific park or recreation area. For more information call 721-5267. Adopt A Trail in the Greenbelt The Laramie City Council adopted plans for a bicycle trail master plan in 1999 which included the Laramie River Greenbelt. From the observation of wildlife, birds, wetlands, and vegetation, people young and old can learn about nature and better understand the ecological importance of the Greenbelt. The Optimist Park trail head includes a playground, sheltered picnic area and fenced in dog run area. There are memorial benches located along the trail for relaxing and enjoying the scenery. The Parks, Tree and Recreation Advisory Board has opened quarter mile sections of the Greenbelt trail for adoption. Groups or individuals that adopt have a two year contract that must be approved by the advisory board. Each year the contract requires a $75.00 payment for the signage that is placed on the adopted section of the trail.

Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM) The City of Laramie mosquito control program is an Integrated Mosquito Management Program (IMM), as recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It considers many various forms of control and uses the most environmentally friendly methods of control available that will achieve the desired control outcomes. IMM programs use pesticides, but only after a systematic monitoring of pest populations indicates that there is a need. All mosquito control products used within the United States fall under EPA guidelines and are evaluated for safety by EPA before being registered for use. The City of Laramie has chosen its pesticides based on several factors including: environmental impacts, cost, effective use in

Community Forest News Trees with limb or trunk damage from high wind or heavy snow may require removal or pruning to make the tree safe and to prevent further damage to the tree, if the tree can be saved. Apple, crabapple, hawthorn, mountain-ash, and pear trees should be pruned while dormant. Mid-October through Mid-November and Mid-February through mid-April are good dormant pruning periods for all trees in Laramie. Avoiding pruning during or near sub-zero temperatures. However, trees with broken limbs can have the broken limbs pruned off as needed anytime. Hire a professional arborist if the tree requires the use of power tools or leaving the ground to prune.

• The best management practice is to prune trees while they are young and vigorously growing. Wait two to three years after transplanting to allow the tree to regrow roots before pruning the entire tree. Dead and broken limbs can be pruned off at transplanting and throughout the tree’s life. • Look for dead, broken and diseased branches. Prune these branches off first. Pruning trees diseased or susceptible to disease will require the cutting tools to be sterilized after each branch is cut. Use Lysol or a 10% chlorine bleach solution. Wipe excess sterilizing liquid off the tool before using it again. • Remove no more than ¼ of a tree’s leaf and branch crown in a season. • Ideally, main side branches should be no more than ⅔ the diameter of the trunk. Branches similar in diameter to the trunk diameter often compete with the main trunk. A young tree may also have more than one main trunk. Choose the largest, most vertical, and best condition trunk and remove the other trunk(s). Don’t remove more than ¼ of tree’s leaf crown in one year. • For most deciduous (broadleaf) trees, don’t prune up from the bottom any more than ⅓ of the tree’s total height. • Where possible, try to encourage side branches that form “10 o’clock” or “2 o’clock” angles with the trunk. • Don’t worry about protecting pruning cuts. Research shows that painting wounds doesn’t prevent or reduce decay.

• Keep hand saws and pruning shears sharp and clean. By-pass style (scissor-like) pruning shears and loppers work best on young trees. • For high branches, 2-inches in diameter or less, you can use a pole pruner. A major job on a big tree should be done by a professional arborist. • For lower larger branches, cut outside the branch bark ridge and branch collar. Do not leave a protruding stub. • When simply shortening a small branch, make the cut at a lateral bud or another lateral branch. Favor a bud that will produce a branch that will grow in the desired direction (usually outward and upward). The cut should be sharp and clean and made at a slight angle about ¼ inch beyond the bud. Parks LaBonte Park

About the Park LaBonte Park has a variety of amenities for people of all ages. From a skate park to a scenic lake, picnic shelters and community gardens, the park functions as a great place for the community to enjoy the outdoors and each other. Additionally, LaBonte Park has been selected for the first playground shade system for the Laramie Parks Division. LaBonte Park was selected for our inaugural shade structure, both because of the sheer volume of children using the park and because the shade trees in this park are less mature than the shade trees in other similarly sized local parks. The shade structure will allow children, families and parks users a place to play, rest, read, picnic, and simply have a break from the sun while still enjoying the outdoors.
