Parks - Integrated Mosquito Management Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM) The City of Laramie mosquito control program is an Integrated Mosquito Management Program (IMM), as recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It considers many various forms of control and uses the most environmentally friendly methods of control available that will achieve the desired control outcomes. IMM programs use pesticides, but only after a systematic monitoring of pest populations indicates that there is a need. All mosquito control products used within the United States fall under EPA guidelines and are evaluated for safety by EPA before being registered for use. The City of Laramie has chosen its pesticides based on several factors including: environmental impacts, cost, effective use in our cool climate, and citizen sensitivities. IMM Contact Information Tyler Shevling, Mosquito Control Crew Supervisor Phone 307-721-5258; Hotline 721-5056 email: tshevling@cityoflaramie.org. Internet: http//:/www.cityoflaramie.org/mosquito IMM Components There are many components to the city of Laramie’s Integrated Mosquito Management approach. These

include but are not limited to larval surveillance, biological larval control, reduction of larval habitat, adult mosquito surveillance, West Nile Virus testing and monitoring, adult mosquito control thought the use of ULV (ultra-low volume) foggers and EPA approved chemicals, and mosquito bite prevention education. West Nile Virus Information The introduction of West Nile Virus (WNv) in 1999 has forced us to consider mosquito control not only for relief from nuisance mosquitoes, but also for the prevention of disease for the general population. The Laramie Valley is home to over 20 species of mosquitoes, including a small but significant population of the mosquito Culex tarsalis, an extremely competent vector of WNv. This mostly rural mosquito prefers to feed on birds but will bite mammals as well, including horses and humans. Mosquito control personnel actively search for and treat larval habitats, but we must also have a plan for the possibility of an outbreak of WNv, which would could require additional adult mosquito control applications. Avian, Equine, Human or Mosquito samples that test positive for West Nile virus, could be the triggering mechanism to initiate this action. The threshold number of mosquitoes which could transmit WNv is set lower than the acceptable numbers of nuisance mosquitoes.
