This coming Sunday will mark the 15th Anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York, claiming the lives of close to 3,000 Americans.

In commemoration of those who lost their lives on that tragic day, and to honor the first responders, San Diego authorities have begun a series of tributes leading up to this Sunday.

This Wednesday, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer headed a ceremony remembering the courage of police officers, firemen and women, and emergency responders who came to America’s aid on the day that marked the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil. “[It was] a day that forever changed our nation. For millions of Americans, the haunting images of that fateful day remain fresh in our minds,” expressed the Mayor during the ceremony held at the Downtown Community Concourse.

“Like all of you, when I think of 9/11, many of the images that cannot escape us are the images of our first responders and their heroism; what they did for our nation on that very fateful day,” Faulconer added.

On September 11, 2001, the world watched on television as, in a matter of minutes, two planes crashed against the World Trade Center towers in New York. Not much later, a third plane hit one of the wings of the Pentagon, one of the world’s most secure facilities.

A

binational delegation of San Diego and Baja California business leaders will head to Washington, D.C. this month to meet with legislators and policy officials to advocate for border projects.

The trip, organized by the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled from September 25 to September 28.

“We have been doing this trip for over seven years and it gives us the opportunity as a binational region to go to Washington and talk to legislators about border issues, the economy on both sides, and other issues,” said San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jerry Sanders. “We are the only chamber in the country that does a binational delegation, so we get really good meetings because of the number of different people that are out there.”

Last year, 150 people participated in the delegation’s yearly trip to

Washington, making it the largest group to date. This year’s trip is expected to have an even larger group of political and business leaders from the San Diego region. Sanders, a former mayor of San Diego, will again lead the delegation.

“Last year, we talked about border infrastructure and we talked to Customs and Border Protection about more help at the border to help expedite the crossings,” Sanders said. “We talked a lot about those issues including the pre-inspection on the Mexican site which went into effect,” Sanders added.

Sanders said that crossborder commerce will again be a major topic of this year meetings.

“This year we are also going to be advocating for the Otay Mesa East Port of Entry Southbound truck route on La Media Road and the Southbound route for PedWest,” Sanders said. “We are also asking for help in the southbound truck route because [truck traffic] clogs

businesses in both sides of the border because they are waiting a long time to cross.”

Sanders also said there will be meetings with legislators that are facing elections this year, and because of the presidential election, the trip is expected to garner more attention with a binational group.

The meetings already scheduled include Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Gil Kerlikowske, Department of Labor Deputy Secretary Chris Lu, Department of Transportation Deputy Secretary Victor Mendez, Department of Transportation Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology Greg Winfree, Department of Housing and Urban Development Deputy Secretary Nani Coloretti, and General Services Administration Administrator Denise Turner Roth.

Richard Thome: The Future is Now

Richard Thome is the first to admit it, his iPhone is always on and it is repeatedly checked. Richard loves all kinds of gadgets and is fascinated by electronics. It actually makes perfect sense, since technology has been part of his life and his job for over 40 years.

“My iPhone is my constant companion,” says Thome as he laughs during a one on one interview with La Prensa San Diego. “ It’s always on.

Of the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives during these attacks, more than 400 were emergency workers, including close to 80 New York and New Jersey Police officers and Port Authority officers, and 343 firefighters.

At the Pentagon, 55 members of the Armed Forces perished, according to official information. The attacks also left 6,000 wounded in their wake.

For San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman, 9/11 is a reminder of how precious life is and how quickly everything can change. Zimmerman also stated that it should serve as a reminder to law enforcement agencies throughout the country to always be ready for the unexpected.

“The importance of America’s first responders to this country can never be minimized,” stressed the Police Chief.

Fire-Rescue Chief Brian Fennessy spoke of that somber day that “shaped who we are, how we live our lives, and what we believe in,” but also one in which our country witnessed acts of heroism that will forever remain in our memory.

“We are here today to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives so that others could live theirs,” said Fennessy during this Wednesday’s tribute. “On September 11, 2001, our Nation saw the face of evil; yet on that awful day we also witnessed something distinctly American: ordinary citizens rising to the occasion and responding with extraordinary acts of courage.”

When I feel that it’s lost or misplaced, it’s like a piece of me is missing.”

Thome is one of the lucky few who gets to do what he loves for a living. He works as the Director of Professional Learning for the Mobile Technology Learning Center at the University of San Diego, which means he’s always surrounded by technology, data and education. Richard’s job is about much more than just flashy gadgets with extra bells and whistles though.

Ultimately it’s about using new tools to enhance education for students across the board. The goal is to make education fun, exciting, and never boring.

“Technology has opened so many doors for our students. Currently we have a full research team led by experts,” explains Thome. “The team looks into what techniques work best throughout the world. That information includes everything from the level of technology used in a classroom to the level of constructivism. Based on the data, recommendations are made to school districts on ways to improve learning for students.”

El condado de San Diego registra un número mayor de mujeres latinas víctimas de violencia intrafamiliar en comparación con el resto de la población femenina en la región. Dentro del condado, hay un mayor número de mujeres que llegan a perder la vida, al encontrarse en ambientes donde su pareja pierde el control y abusa de su fuerza contra ellas.

Asociaciones como la Alianza por la Esperanza Internacional de San Diego, junto al Centro de Justicia Familiar en el condado, ya contabilizan a una tercera parte de las víctimas como mujeres de origen latino. Estas mujeres se encuentran inmersas en círculos viciosos que las llevan a permanecer en ambientes de golpes y peligro.

Lisbet Pérez coordinadora del Proyecto Esperanza en San Diego aseguró existen una gran cantidad de factores que hasta hoy mantienen la estadística.

“Hay muchos miedos y un

estudio denominado ‘NO MORE’ reveló las primeras tres causas por las que una mujer inmigrante latina no deja una relación abusiva. En primer lugar está el miedo a la deportación, el segundo miedo más común es a que les quiten a sus hijos, ya sea el abusador o el gobierno, y la tercera razón es el miedo a más violencia, ya que usualmente él abusador amenaza con hacerle

daño a sus familiares y a sus amistades”, explicó Pérez.

En San Diego, el número de mujeres que más solicitan apoyo provienen de zonas como Barrio Logan, City Heights, y Chula Vista.

Sin embargo la problemática es mucha mas grande y no solo afecta a nuestra región. A nivel nacional, el 56 por ciento de las latinas conocen a una víctima de violencia y por lo menos una de cada cuatro personas del sexo femenino en la Unión Americana viven violencia intrafamiliar.

“Es muy triste porque es un problema que está pasando en nuestra comunidad y todos sabemos que sucede porque todos conocemos a alguien, pero nadie habla del tema”, explicó Pérez. “Es un tema vergonzoso; inclusive las víctimas después de salir de la relación abusiva, tienden a no hablar del tema y CONTINUA EN LA PAGINA 9

FAULCONER STILL SILENT With less than two months to election day, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer still has not taken a position on the issue of a downtown Chargers stadium.

The Mayor has not said whether he supporters or opposed Prop C created by the Chargers. Faulconer may make it through the election without having to take a position on the largest local project in decades.

FEDS LOSE BILLIONS IN TAXES A recent report by the Brookings Institution in Washington DC reviews the lost revenues in federal tax not collected on bonds issues to finance sports facilities including Petco Park in San Diego. The study concludes that the federal government has lost up to $3.7 billion since 2000 because the interest earned on public bonds is exempt from taxation. For bonds issued for Petco Park, the report estimates the IRS lost out on $68 million in taxes, and concludes there “is no discernible positive relationship between sports facility construction and local economic development, income growth or job creation.”

ITT TECH CLOSES ITS DOORS A well-known technical school has shut down and left thousands of students unsure about their futures. ITT Technical Institute shut down after US Department of Education ruled the school did not meet federal standards. ITT students can still use their school loans to complete classes at other schools, and they could also get loans discharged for ITT fees already paid. Local community colleges are now offering classes to ITT students.

MT. SOLEDAD CROSS TO STAY The 25-year legal drama over the white cross atop a La Jolla hilltop is now over. The final case was closed by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals this week. The case challenged the cross being on government land. Last year the land and the cross were purchased by a local group from the Dept of Defense. For the past year, the case was being wrapped up and its now finally over. In the end, the courts agreed that the cross violated the separation of church and state. The City of San Diego originally owned the land, which was later taken by the federal government, then recently sold to a non-profit for $1.4 million. Case closed.

YES on San Diego’s Proposition K: Too Many Latinos Left Out Now

S

an Diego’s power elite are fighting to keep San Diego’s elections open to outright winners in the primary elections when many Latinos and other minorities do not vote.

Proposition K on the November ballot would help our community gain greater influence in local elections.

Prop K would force a runoff election in November for the offices of Mayor, City Council, and City Attorney. Under the current election system, if any candidate for those offices receives more than 50% of the vote, they automatically win in the primary election without a need to run in November.

Although that may seem like a more efficient way to decide an election, it leaves many voters out of the election process, including a disproportionate number of Latinos, African-Americans, and lower income voters.

In the history of Chula Vista, and in the South Bay area, the names Cacho and Tamayo signify success in family farming. These names reflect the struggle and triumph from another era and remain as examples of family businesses which have stood the test of time.

Residents of southwest Chula Vista know and love Otay Farms Produce Market on the corner of Main and Broadway and recognize Don Luis Estates Mobile Home Park on Orange Avenue. Both Otay Farms and Cacho Farms were started on two basic ideas: hard work and familia.

The founders of Cacho farms, Antonio and Hermina Cacho, and the founders of Don Luis Estates, Paul and Amelia Tamayo, learned early in life the virtue of hard work and were tempered with the understanding of its potential.

Understanding that life could be difficult but that by working together as a family, pulling together,respecting each other and those that they encounter they would find a dignified and respectable living.

proven that fewer voters, and especially underrepresented communities, participate in primary elections.

If that is the case, then allowing our Mayor, City Council, and City Attorney to be elected by only half of the voters isn’t democratic at all.

San Diego’s voters have become younger, with more people of color registered to vote than at any time in our past. In recent elections, more woman, LGBT candidates, and Latinos have won campaigns for public office than ever before.

And that trend should continue to produce a more diverse pool of elected officials that better represent our community.

Let’s not stifle that progress by short-circuiting our local election process. Let’s encourage more participation, not less. Let’s make sure all our votes count.

whatever challenges confront you by meeting them head on and to never, ever back down. With that Michocan spirit, Antonio and Hermina Cacho ventured on to the United States, crossing into Texas in 1928. They found work in the fields, as it was the only job opportunity open to Mexican immigrants at the time in Texas and elsewhere in the United States.

By 1930,they had followed farm work to San Diego County settling in the Pala area of North County. It was there where the first Cacho children were born starting with Rosa, their eldest, followed by Luis, the first son. The other Cacho siblings Irene and Emilia, Petra, Antonio, and Delia, the youngest, were also born in San Diego County but outside the Pala area.

It was in the loss of Hermina’s first child, who became ill at six months deeply affected her. She felt humiliated and disrespected by the nurses, she understood enough English to know that they were making fun of her because her slip was showing,at the bottom of her dress. Ironically,from that experience,all the Cacho children were born at home,with the exception of Delia,the youngest child.

The loss of her daughter was an experience that profoundly affected Hermina. It was the first step in understanding how things were done in California and it reinforced her personal belief that

you must treat everybody with respect. She vowed then that her children would learn how things were done in the real world, and that they would be empowered with respect for themselves and others.

Hermina’s desire to learn about how things were done in California,would one day bear fruits, far beyond,anything she could have imagined in 1930. One of her grandsons would emerge to become the Majority Leader of the California State Assembly.

Little by little, Antonio and Hermina Cacho began buying small parcels of land in Chula Vista and other parts of the South Bay and working the land, selling their goods, and saving to be ready for the next opportunity. They worked hard, always willing to help out their fellow farmers. It didn’t matter to the Cachos who they were helping and they worked closely with the JapaneseAmerican farming families in the pre-war hysteria.

Opportunities came for the Cachos and eventually their holdings became substantial.

Throughout the years, after harvest time they would have great fiestas where the workers and family members would perform, recalling their parents’ time in Michoacan. A change in the family dynamic brought about new challenges for Hermina Cacho and she responded

in the only way she knew how: head on, Michoacan style. She passed her twilight years enjoying her children and grandchildren. Hermina was preceded in death by her husband Antonio.

Her and Antonio’s children all went on to make contributions to the United States, California, San Diego County, Chula Vista, and the South Bay area. Just a few examples are noted. Luis Cacho formed Mariachi Cacho and performed for Mexican-American soldiers in Vietnam during periods of heavy combat and composed a song for the troops.

Luis was an early contributor to the campaigns for MexicanAmerican candidates in the ‘60s and early ‘70s in the South Bay area, battled against abuses by the Border Patrol, often taking them on at great personal and economic sacrifice.

Little known fact: Luis Cacho, at the request of Herman Baca through the intervention of his sister, Delia Cacho Talamantez, lent one of his tractors with a digging scoop to the takeover of Chicano Park in its first days.

Delia Cacho Talamantez was an activist and advocate for more than 40 years. Delia was in the forefront of every major social justice and gender equity issue in San Diego County. She served many years as affirmative action adviser in the UC system.

voter turnout in primary elections in California. The study found that the electorate in primaries included fewer young voters, Latinos, and Asians. Even under the state’s new open primary system, voter turnout in June has continued to shrink compared to general elections.

But why the large difference in voter turnout?

Some think it’s a gap in party philosophies where Democrats tend to skip contested primaries between two or more Democrats and wait for a more choice between Democrats and Republicans.

Republicans, on the other hand, vote more for a candidate they support in hopes of helping to choose their party’s candidate in the general election.

Others argue working-class voters and minority voters (often very much the same group) tend to have less time to focus on primaries compared with older and more affluent voters.

But no matter the reason, it is

Historically, election turn out for primary elections is much lower than the turnout in November, across most socio-economic groups except higher income Republicans.

For example, in San Diego’s 2012 election for Mayor, the turnout in the June primary was 241,404 voters; in the November runoff that year, the turnout was 469,932.

That’s a 94% increase between the two elections just five months apart.

And of those that skip the June election, a disproportionate number are either registered as Democrats or non-partisan, now the most popular preference when new voters register.

As we have seen in recent elections, Latinos and other minority voters vote largely for Democratic candidates. In 2008, for example, Barack Obama received the support of 75 % of the Latino vote, 73% of the Asian vote, and over 93% of the African-American vote.

Measure A to Increase Sales Tax to Fund Road Repairs

San Diego County voters will have the choice to approve or reject Measure A, which would increase sales tax in the region by half-cent for infrastructure projects, in the next general election.

Measure A is an ordinance that was voted on by SANDAG’s Board of Directors on July 8 to be included on the ballot for the November 8 election.

If Measure A is approved by two-thirds of voters in San Diego

County, the half-cent sales tax would begin to be collected effective April 1, 2017.

Measure A is designed to provide a dedicated source of local revenue to invest in the region’s transportation future, including highway, transit, open space, bike, and pedestrian projects throughout the county.

“The measure, if approved, is expected to raise $18 billion over a 40 year period,” explained Doug White, director of business outreach Citizens for a Better San

Diego, a campaign group created to support Measure A. “All the funds will go primarily to road repair and transit and transportation infrastructure.”

According to SANDAG, Measure A addresses infrastructure needs across the region from filling potholes on local streets and relieving highway congestion, to improving transit connectivity and preserving more open space.

New Port of Entry and Highways Coming to Otay Mesa

The California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) recently announced the arrival of close to $100 million dollars for the construction of connectors for State Route 125 and State Route 11. The third phase of these projects would connect the highways to one of the most ambitious projects between the U.S. and Mexico to date: The Otay Mesa East Port of Entry.

Mario Orso, Intermodal Project Director at CALTRANS, shared that the State had contributed $50 million to the SR-125 connectors project, and that the federal government intended to fund an additional $50 million, with “which SR-11 would be fully funded”, he said.

The first phase of the Otay Mesa East Port of Entry project started back in 2013 with the SR-11 project from SR-905 to Enrico Fermi Drive. The full plan – with an investment of more than $900 million – consists of three phases and, once completed, would culminate in a 20-lane Port of Entry between Tijuana and the United States.

The business sector has stated that not having an additional border crossing, such as Otay Mesa East, has already led to significant economic losses, among them

an average of $7.2 billion in lost production and close to 62,000 jobs/year due to long border wait times and lack of efficiency for crossing products. “These are very important, and very positive news; we have long been in favor of this new Otay Mesa East project, since it would guarantee people who want to cross the border to be able to do so in 20 minutes. We don’t have that now,” stated Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Alejandra Mier y Teran.

Another piece of great news from the business sector was that the investment on the Mexican side of the Port of Entry “already has funding allocated for acquiring the land in Mexico, which is a hugely important step that was missing. This will yield in many benefits, such as competitiveness, more companies, and better quality of life for our workers,” added Mier y Teran.

The more than 1,200 businesses operating in Otay Mesa also eagerly await this project aimed at reducing border wait times, increasing vehicle flow, and even reducing wait times at other ports of entry in the region, where during the most recent U.S. holiday, northbound vehicles had to wait a CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

Teachers from across the region will be honored for their commitment to teaching and learning at the 26th annual Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers. The Academy Awards-style extravaganza recognizes the county’s 26,000 public school teachers and features notable emcees and presenters, musical and dance performances, and the announcement of the five 2016-17 San Diego County Teachers of the Year who will go on to represent the region at the California Teacher of the Year program later this year.

“It’s an opportunity to represent my school,” said last year’s Teacher of the Year winner Armando Leon. “It’s very important to have this recognition among 26,000 teachers.”

Leon teaches United States History and he also coordinates AVID at Mar Vista Academy in Imperial Beach.

“The award is an honor for me, my school, and for my two daughters and wife,” Leon said. “It’s important to recognize the teachers, that we see the

positive impact they have, and not always focus on the bad things.”

Leon also mentioned that as a Latino receiving the award, he can be seen as a role model for his students and families in the community.

“My parents never pushed my four brothers or four sisters into education, we didn’t have these role models,” Leon said. “For Latino people to see a Latino represented in the awards, I’m hoping that they can see how far they can also go.”

The 43 nominees for Teacher of the Year were selected by their respective school districts. Of those nominees, five will be named County Teacher of the Year. The top five teachers are selected based on student achievement, professional development and community involvement, teaching philosophy and personal style, knowledge of educational issues and trends, promotion and development of the teaching profession, accountability, and their ability to serve as ambassadors of education.

Cross Border Xpress, the Tijuana airport border crossing in San Diego, will expand its facilities to include more parking spaces due to an increasing demand.

“This is one of the necessities we have, we are adding 550 parking spaces,” said CBX CEO Raul Revuelta. “It was one of the subjects we needed to address, they need to be functioning by this year’s Thanksgiving.”

The binational facilities opened in December 2015 with 700 stalls and just started a million dollar investment to include new parking spaces, CBX Chief Commercial Officer Elizabeth Brown informed.

CBX is an enclosed pedestrian bridge for Tijuana Airport passengers crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. With a valid boarding pass and a CBX ticket, users can cross the pedestrian border bridge in each direction, avoiding long waits at ports of entry.

CBX serves the approximately 2.4 million passengers who already cross the border as part of their travels.

Spanning 390 feet, the CBX skywalk is the first ever to connect a the United States directly into a foreign airport terminal.

“The first benefit of CBX is for Southern California residents. There is no other airport here that has the number of direct flights or connections like the Tijuana airport to Mexican destinations,” Revuelta mentioned.

“There are 33 direct destinations in Mexico including flights to Mexico City and Guadalajara every hour.”

aestros de toda la región serán honrados por su compromiso al aprendizaje y para el enseñar en la edición 26 del evento anual Cox Presenta: Un Homenaje a Maestros. La extravagancia al estilo de los premios Oscar reconoce a 26,000 maestros públicos con presentadores reconocidos, así como con presentaciones musicales y de danza, y anuncia a los cinco ganadores del premio Maestro del Año 2016-2017 del Condado de San Diego, quienes representarán a la región en el programa de Maestro del Año en California en los próximos meses.

“Es una oportunidad de representar a mi escuela”, dijo el ganador de Maestro del Año del periodo pasado, Armando León.

“Es muy importante este reconocimiento entre 26,000 maestros”.

León enseña Historia de Estados Unidos y coordina el programa AVID en la preparatoria Mar Vista Academy de Imperial Beach.

“Este premio es un orgullo para mi, la escuela, y para mis dos hijas y esposa”, dijo León. “Es importante reconocer a los maestros y que veamos el impacto positivo que tienen, y no solo

enfocarnos siempre en las cosas malas”.

León mencionó que como latino, el recibir el premio es como ser un líder de la comunidad para sus estudiantes y familias en la comunidad.

“Mis padres nunca me empujaron a mí, o a mis cuatro hermanos o cuatro hermanas hacia la educación. No teníamos a estos líderes comunitarios”, dijo León. “Al ver a un latino representado en los premios, espero que más latinos puedan ver que ellos también pueden llegar lejos”.

Incremento de Impuestos para Autopistas POR ANA GÓMEZ SALCIDO

Los votantes del Condado de San Diego tendrán la decisión de aprobar o rechazar la Propuesta A, esta incrementa un medio centavo los impuestos locales de venta y uso para proyectos de infraestructura en las próximas elecciones generales.

La Propuesta A es un decreto que fue aprobado por la Mesa Directiva de la Asociación de Gobiernos del Condado de San Diego (SANDAG, por sus siglas en inglés), el pasado 8 de julio para ser incluido en la boleta de las elecciones del 8 de noviembre.

Si la Propuesta A es aprobada por dos tercios de los votantes en el Condado de San Diego, el impuesto de un medio centavo se efectuaría a partir del 1 de Abril del 2017.

La Propuesta A está diseñada para proporcionar un fondo de recursos locales para invertir en el futuro en la infraestructura de la región, incluyendo proyectos de carreteras, vialidades, espacios abiertos, bicicletas, y corredores para peatones en toda la comunidad.

Los cinco elegidos son seleccionados por los logros de sus estudiantes, desarrollo profesional, relación con la comunidad, enseñanzas de filosofía, estilo personal, conocimiento de temas y tendencias en educación, promoción y desarrollo de la profesión de maestros, responsabilidad, y su habilidad de ser embajadores de la educación.

“Los maestros tienen el poder de impactar a sus estudiantes

trabajo. Thome es el Director del llamado “Learning for the Mobile Technology Learning Center” en la Universidad de San Diego. Dentro de este centro de aprendizaje con tecnología mobil, Thome constantemente está rodeado de alta tecnología, de investigaciones, y de educación. Pero el interés va más allá de pantallas de último modelo y de tabletas digitales.

Thome busca incorporar la tecnología para promover la educación de estudiantes a nivel local, estatal y hasta nacional.

“La tecnología ha abierto un sin fin de puertas para estudiantes y las sigue abriendo”, explica Thome. “ Al momento tenemos un equipo de investigadores que estudia las técnicas educativas más eficaces alrededor del mundo. El énfasis está en encontrar las técnicas que combinan la tecnología con la educación y que tienen éxito.

Dependiendo de los resultados, le enviamos recomendaciones a distritos escolares para que actualicen sus programas.”

A través de los años, Thome ha encabezado varios proyectos en el sector tecnológico y educativo. Ha sido maestro y también sub-director escolar y ha trabajado en el Departamento de Educación del Condado de San Diego al igual que en varios distritos escolares del estado. Durante sus años en el Condado, Thome dirigió la implementación de tres centros tecnológicos en la

Este domingo se cumplen 15 años del atentado terrorista a las Torres Gemelas en Nueva York, en el que murieron alrededor de 3,000 personas.

En conmemoración de las personas que fallecieron ese trágico martes negro, así como los primeros respondientes que arriesgaron su vida, varias autoridades de San Diego iniciaron una serie de tributos que se extenderán hasta este fin de semana.

Este miércoles, el alcalde de San Diego Kevin Faulconer encabezó una ceremonia para recordar la valentía de las fuerzas policiales, bomberos, y servicios de emergencia que asistieron aquel día en que se registró el peor ataque terrorista en suelo estadounidense. “[Fue] un día que cambió por siempre a nuestra nación. Para millones de americanos, las imágenes de ese día permanecen frescas en nuestra mente”, declaró el alcalde en una ceremonia realizada a las afueras de la oficina del ayuntamiento.

“Al igual que ustedes, cuando yo pienso

en el 11 de septiembre, las imágenes que no pueden escaparse son las de nuestros primeros respondientes y su heroísmo y lo que hicieron por nuestra nación en ese día fatídico”, agregó Faulconer.

El 11 de septiembre de 2001 el mundo vio por televisión cómo en un lapso de minutos dos aviones se impactaron con las torres gemelas del World Trade Center de Nueva York. Poco más tarde, un tercer avión se estrelló contra una de las alas del Pentágono, considerado uno de los edificios más seguros del mundo.

De las casi 3,000 personas que murieron en dichos ataques, cerca de 80 eran oficiales de policía en Nueva York, casi 400 trabajadores de emergencias, y 343 bomberos. En el Pentágono, perecieron 55 integrantes de las fuerzas armadas, revelan datos oficiales. Aunado a esa cifra, los atentados dejaron un saldo de 6,000 personas heridas dentro del Pentagono.

Para la Jefa de Policía de San Diego Shelley Zimmerman, el 11 de septiembre es un recordatorio de lo valioso de la vida y del “qué tan rápido” todo puede cambiar.

A su vez, dijo que la fecha funge como un

recordatorio para las agencias policiacas alrededor del país para siempre estar preparados para lo inesperado.

“La importancia de los primeros respondientes de este país nunca debe ser minimizada”, subrayó la titular de la policía de San Diego.

Por su parte, el Jefe de Bomberos, Brian Fennessy resaltó que la enseñanza que dejó un día que “cambió quienes somos y cómo vivimos la vida”, en el que además, el país fue testigo de actos de heroísmo que permanecen en la memoria.

“Estamos aquí para recordar a los hombres y mujeres que dieron su vida para que otros pudieran vivir la suya”, señaló Fennessy durante el tributo de este miércoles. “El 11 de septiembre de 2001 nuestra nación vio el rostro de la maldad, pero en ese día tan horrible también vimos algo muy distintivamente americano, ciudadanos ordinarios que se alzaron a la ocasión y respondieron con extraordinarios actos de valor”, Fennessy concluyó.

CBX Crece Debido a Demanda

La garita del aeropuerto de Tijuana en San Diego Cross Border Xpress, o CBX por sus siglas en inglés, extenderá sus instalaciones para proporcionar más espacio en el estacionamiento debido a la demanda.

“Esta es una de las necesidades que tenemos, vamos a agregar 550 espacios de estacionamiento”, dijo el Director General de CBX, Raul Revuelta. “Es uno de los puntos importantes que necesitamos

atender, y estarán funcionando para el día de Acción de Gracias de este año”.

Las instalaciones binacionales iniciaron operaciones en diciembre del 2015 con 700 espacios de estacionamiento y una inversión de un millón de dólares. “Estamos iniciando para ampliar el estacionamiento”, informó la Directora Comercial de CBX, Elizabeth Brown.

CBX es un puente peatonal techado para los pasajeros del aeropuerto de Tijuana que cruzan la frontera de Estados Unidos a

México. Con un boleto en mano del aeropuerto de Tijuana, y un pasaje de CBX, los usuarios pueden utilizar el puente de San Diego a Tijuana o viceversa, y evitar largas horas de espera en las garitas.

Con una longitud de 390 pies, el puente de CBX es el primero en la historia en conectar de Estados Unidos directamente, con la terminal de un aeropuerto en México. CBX sirve aproximadamente a 2.4 millones de pasajeros que cruzan la frontera como parte de su viaje.

“El beneficio de CBX es para los residentes del sur de California, ya que no hay otro aeropuerto aquí que tenga el número de vuelos directos o conexiones para destinos en México, como lo tiene el aeropuerto de Tijuana”, comentó Revuelta. “Hay 33 destinos directos en México incluyendo vuelos cada hora a la ciudad de México, y Guadalajara”.

Uno de los destinos que ofrece el aeropuerto de Tijuana, es un vuelo directo a Shanghai, y a partir de Enero del 2017 se incluirá otro vuelo a China.

“Actualmente hay más usuarios cruzando de México a Estados Unidos con larga espera en la garita”, dijo Revuelta. “El número de usuarios cambia dependiendo de las fechas. En este fin de semana del Día del Trabajo hubo más personas usando CBX hacia el sur, que hacia el norte”.

Lideres Viajan a Washington POR ANA GOMEZ SALCIDO

Una delegación binacional de comerciantes líderes de San Diego y Baja California, viajarán a Washington, D.C. para reunirse con legisladores y oficiales de política para abogar por proyectos de la frontera.

El viaje organizado por la Cámara Regional de Comercio de San Diego está programado del 25 al 28 de Septiembre.

“Hemos realizado este viaje por más de siete años, el cual nos ha dado la oportunidad como región binacional trasladarnos a Washington y tratar temas con los legisladores sobre asuntos fronterizos y la economía de ambos lados de la frontera”, dijo el Presidente y CEO de la Cámara Regional de Comercio de San Diego Jerry Sanders. “Somos la única cámara de comercio en el país que realiza una delegación binacional; somos una delegación comprometida y estamos dispuestos a lograr resultados en este viaje”.

El año pasado participaron 150 personas en la delegación binacional este año se espera contar con más participantes.

“El año pasado hablamos sobre la infraestructura de la frontera, y el tema se trató con Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza. Nosotros les solicitamos más ayuda en la frontera para acelerar los cruces, también hablamos sobre otros temas como el programa de preinspección del lado mexicano, que apenas tomó efecto”, dijo Sanders. “Sentimos que muchos puntos a tratar salieron de ese viaje.

Autoridades Federales: ‘Poco Importante el Muro de Trump’ POR MARINEE ZAVALA

En medio de la controversia por las declaraciones del candidato a la presidencia de Estados Unidos Donald Trump, las máximas autoridades en materia de seguridad fronteriza rechazaron las bases de su discurso.

Mientras Trump terminaba su visita por México y proclamaba un discurso en ambos países sobre cómo se pagaría un muro de grandes proporciones, autoridades federales de México y autoridades Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza (CBP, por sus siglas en inglés) de los Estados Unidos estrechaban lazos desde el condado de San Diego.

El evento binacional, titulado Construyendo Comunidades Fronterizas Fuertes, se mostró desde Southwestern College en Chula Vista. En este, se discutieron las estrategias que implementan los cuerpos de seguridad en la frontera para lograr la disminución del crimen.

El comisionado de CBP Gil Kerlikowske aseguró nunca había existido mejor relación entre los países.

“Las relaciones con México desde los ocho años que ha estado el presidente Obama nunca han sido mejores. La cooperación y la confianza son muy importantes, y creo que solo mejoraran con eventos como este”, afirmó Kerlikowske.

Por otro lado, la policía federal en México aseguró no relacionarse con tendencias políticas al momento de proteger a los ciudadanos, cuestiones donde dijeron las fronteras eran

inexistentes.

“Nosotros ponemos de verdad a un lado el muro; son políticas, yo creo que de estado y para nosotros como policías nunca ha habido muros ni fronteras y si los hay para nosotros son invisibles”. Señaló Raúl Antonio Castillejos Solís, titular de la División de Seguridad Regional Federal en México.

Mientras la mañana avanzaba, desde el centro de estudios en Chula Vista más se evidenciaba el trabajo que hacían ambas autoridades en donde en una especie de feria los agentes mostraban a los estudiantes y la comunidad a sus elementos, su armas, vehículos y algunas estrategias del equipo canino.

“El evento es para enfocarnos en la buena relación que tenemos y no solamente mantener a nuestra comunidad y nuestras fronteras seguras en lo que viene siendo Tijuana y San Diego, pero también

colaborando por medio de inteligencia”, declaró Wendi Lee, vocera de CBP. “Hemos visto casos grandes como el operativo de una de la personas más buscadas por la patrulla fronteriza que fue Martel Valencia Cortez, que igual, con la ayuda del gobierno de México pudimos arrestar a esta persona”.

Las autoridades federales dijeron que el trabajo en conjunto era constante en donde las agencias de México y la Patrulla Fronteriza mantenían unidades de enlace con las que trabajan directamente. De esta forma, la información que debe llegar a la autoridad es más rápida y oportuna. Dijeron también que las estrategias cambiaban conforme las necesidad para combatir a los criminales.

“Cuando el crimen organizado cambia sus estrategias, es algo que se comparte con ambas unidades de inteligencia en la Unión Americana y México. Con esto también cambiamos nuestras estrategias contra ellos”, agregó Lee. El comisionado de CBP en Estados Unidos informó a que “El reto para [la agencia] es el explicar a la comunidad que ambos protegemos y que estamos para cuidarlos y hacer al país más seguro. Es un rol que está más allá de la política y creo que la frontera nunca había sido más segura: tenemos más recursos en la frontera y como jefe de policía por muchos años, he visto un decremento en crímenes.

Hay muchas ciudades en los Estados Unidos que quisieran ser tan seguras como lo es San Diego, El Paso, o Tucson” aseguró Gil Kerlikowske.

Ayuda Para Adictos a las Drogas POR ANA GOMEZ SALCIDO

Las personas que abusan del alcohol o las drogas pueden encontrar ayuda en los más de 50 centros de tratamiento contra las drogas operados por el Condado de San Diego.

Como parte de Vive Bien San Diego, el condado opera centros de tratamiento por toda la región.

El objetivo es mejorar el bienestar y salud de todos los residentes locales.

“El tratamiento contra las drogas realmente sirve para las personas que están dispuestas a trabajar para limpiarse y recobrar la sobriedad”, dijo Linda Bridgeman-Smith de la Unidad de Prevención y Planeación de Servicios de Salud y Comportamiento del Condado de San Diego. “El tratamiento realmente sirve, y está disponible en San Diego”.

Durante el año fiscal del 2014-2015, más de 11,000 personas fueron parte de los programas de tratamiento contra el abuso del alcohol o drogas por parte del condado;1136 fueron menores de 18 años.

Para los adultos, la primera droga de elección fue la metanfetamina, seguido por el alcohol, y la heroína. En comparación, la mayoría de los jóvenes fueron recibidos por fumar marihuana o hachís, seguido por alcohol, y metanfetamina. Sails and Sand in San Diego Last weekend was one full of excitement along San Diego Bay. The Big Bay saw two major events which brought fans of both boats and sand sculptures to our beautiful waterfront!

Over 3,000 tons of sand were dumped on the B Street Cruise Terminal for master sand sculptors from all over the world to display their talents. Their ephemeral creations made out of sand were truly unbelievable.

The Festival of Sail also took place during this past weekend. Put on by the Maritime Museum of San Diego, Festival of Sail is the largest tall ship festival on the west coast. Every Labor Day weekend the bay transforms into a nautical theme park.

Spectators could see many old vessels in action, including a newly commissioned replica of the San Salvador, the first European vessel to land in San Diego.

People who abuse alcohol or drugs can find help at the over 50 drug treatment facilities operated by the County of San Diego to overcome their addiction.

As part of Live Well San Diego, the County operates treatment centers throughout the region. The program’s goal is to improve the overall health and well being of all local residents.

“Drug treatment really does work for people who are willing to work at getting clean and sober,” said Linda Bridgeman-Smith of the County’s Behavioral Health Services Prevention and Planning Unit. “It really does work and [drug treatment] is available in San Diego County.”

During the 2014-2015 fiscal year, there were over 11,000 people served by County-funded alcohol and other drug treatment programs. Of those, 1,136 were people under 18 years of age.

For adults, the primary drug of choice was methamphetamine, followed by alcohol and heroin. By comparison, most youth were admitted into treatment for using marijuana or hashish, followed by alcohol and methamphetamine.

Typically, about one-third of people who enter treatment complete their program while one-third drop out, and one-third make some progress toward recovery.

September is National Recovery Month and hundreds of people in recovery are expected to come together to celebrate being drug-free at Recovery Happens, an annual celebration sponsored by the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency and its prevention and treatment partners.

This year’s event will take place Saturday, September 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Liberty Station NTC Park in Point Loma.

The County and its partners organize the event to celebrate the accomplishments of those who are now in recovery and are leading a life free from alcohol and drugs. This free event will feature a recovery countdown, resource fair, and family activities. The celebration is open to the public, all ages are welcome and parking is free.

“Recovery is a lifelong process. The same way that people manage diseases like diabetes or heart disease, you celebrate life,” BridgemanSmith mentioned. “If someone has reached 30 days of not using drugs, the recovering community really sees that as something to celebrate, it reinforces that there is life after drug use, and you can be happy, and just enjoy life.”

Bridgeman-Smith recommends to people that have family members or friends that are drug users to search for information of how to help their loved ones. Help is available through the County’s Access and Crisis Line at (888) 724-7240 or 2-1-1.

LA FAMILIA TAMAYO Natives of Baja California are affectionately referred to as “Cachanillas,” a colloquialism that over time has come to mean people of strong character, not afraid of risks and hard work. The natives of the Mexican state of Chihuahua are also regarded as strong spirited people, who don’t back down from adversity or challenge.

This great combination of character came together in the marriage of Paul Estrada Tamayo and Amelia Lozoya LaChica and would be the foundation upon which the Tamayo family was formed.

The labor of the Tamayo family would produce a neighborhood institution that today Chula Vista knows and loves: Otay Farms.

Paul Estrada Tamayo was born in San Jose Del Cabo, Baja California Sur during the early part of the 1900s.

Amelia Lozoya Lachica was born in Chihuahua, Mexico during that same time period.They both came from families,who hungered for a better life and understood to reach for such a possibility, would require a fundamental change in their lives, involving many risks and challenges.

Both Paul and Amelia had to decide to leave their native Mexico to pursue the hope of a better life. The prospect of a better life energized a generation of Mexicans to migrate north to the United States during the early 1900s.

The migratory patterns of Mexican nationals tend to reflect a regional approach.

Mexicans from inner states would generally cross at El Paso, Texas and then follow the jobs either to New Mexico, Arizona, or California. The Migrants from Baja California and Sonora would generally congregate in Mexicali, cross at Calexico and seek work, which at the time was concentrated in El Centro.

Some of the Baja Californianos would venture east from Mexicali to Arizona to places like Mesa, Chandler, Globe, Glendale and other little towns where field work was available.

It was the convergence of two families migrating and finding themselves in the Imperial Valley during the 1930s that brought about the marriage of Paul Estrada Tamayo and Amelia Lozoya La Chica.

The Tamayo family was formed by two people,each strong of spirit, hard working, loving and oriented to family. Family emerged as the single most important part of the migrant experience. For many it was family that saved them in their darkest hours.

By the mid 1930s, it was time to start a family. Hector Tamayo, their firstborn, was born in 1935 in Brawley,California. He was followed by Paul Tamayo, born in San Diego in 1937.

Evangelina was born in 1939,also in San Diego.

Evangelina was followed by Alessandro, the youngest and the last Tamayo sibling alive today, born in 1954.

Paul and Amelia Tamayo approached life as a team,supporting each other in whatever they were doing, but they always remained focused on their children.

Paul Tamayo Sr. had worked hard all of his life, but he especially liked working in the produce business: buying, selling,

transporting, packing and doing whatever was required to get the job done. He found personal reward in finding the best products at the best prices and passing the savings on to his customers. He had always wanted to start a business that would be run by and for his family.

Tamayo’s dream came true when in 1961 he started Paul and Sons Produce on Moss and Broadway in Chula Vista.Things were tough at the beginning, but with time and hard work, success was just around the corner. Plus he was now joined in this effort by his sons Hector and Paul. The opportunity to acquire a bigger site presented itself and thus Paul and Sons moved to its current site at the corner of Main and Broadway in Chula Vista.

Paul and Son’s transition to Otay Farms would be gradual. Many changes were dictated by having to be competitive in the marketplace and customer preference. Acquisition and ownership of the store parcel also influenced what would be the future direction of the business.

By the 1970s, Paul’s sons Hector and Paul Jr. and their families were running the business and with this, the personality of the Otay Farms began to emerge beyond just being a produce market.

First came the meat department, then the tortilleria and little by little, utilizing recipes from Amelia Tamayo and the wives of Paul and Hector Tamayo, the fast food section became a big part of the business.The panaderia came soon afterward with the assistance of a baker named Santiago, who through his experience, essentially laid out that aspect of the business.

The Otay Farms of today is something that Paul and Amelia Tamayo could have never imagined in their dreams of America, but it gave them the chance to maintain the idea that was most precious to them: Familia.

Paul and Amelia Tamayo have gone to their rest; they are joined by three of their children: Hector, Paul, and Evangelina.

Family Farming, as a way of life, has pretty much disappeared in America. The reasons are mostly economic. Our country’s history recognizes that family farming played a vital role in our nation’s growth.

The farming history of California and San Diego County is rich with examples of successful family farm efforts. Quietly tucked in to that perception, are the contributions of Mexican immigrants to family farming. Usually, the role of Mexican immigrants is perceived to be in the workforce. However, in the South Bay area, the familias of Antonio and Hermina Cacho and Paul and Amelia Tamayo changed that dynamic through their hard work and faith in the family structure. Both the Tamayos and the Cachos affirmed that Mexican immigrants participated in the building of America, even in a simplified and quiet way. Perhaps their voice was not loud, but what they did, and how they did it, is no less great.

He’s been a teacher and an assistant superintendent.

He’s also worked for San Diego’s County Office of Education and several school districts throughout the state.While working for the County, he led the development of three regional technology centers which gives roughly 500,000 students access to these services in more than 40 school districts. His lists of achievements is long, but he says the highlight of his career was collaborating with the Mexican government in making digital technology available to Spanish speaking students throughout California.

Thome grew up in the Los Angeles area speaking English, but at home he lived in a Mexican household where speaking Spanish was the norm. Richard understands California’s school system and those enrolled in it, which of course includes a growing Hispanic population. Years ago, Thome worked as an English as a Second Language teacher which gave him an insider perspective on the strengths and challenges bilingual students face, especially when it comes to having access to technology.

“It’s not so much a gap based on ethnicity, but more of a socioeconomic gap,” says Thome. “Families that can afford to purchase new technologies will buy them.

We see that a lot in some wealthy communities in Chula Vista,” Thome explained. “One of the

solutions is for students to have the same technology they have in school even when school is out. So how do we do that? There are some districts that allow students to check out devices and take them home.”

Thome’s interest in technology goes back to when he was a child. He was a fairly good student, but his brother, he says, was a genius. His older sibling become a computer programer, but most importantly, he was Thome’s mentor. He always encouraged him to aim higher and Thome repeatedly followed his advice.

Even though the majority of the tech teams involves young experts, Thome says he’s never felt out of place or out of the loop. He jokingly remembers how back in the early 80’s, when he was working for the Capistrano School District, he was appointed as the technology coordinator because he was the only person on the team with an Apple computer.

“Things have changed right? That was a big deal back then,” says Thome.

“IBM had just released them and very few people had them. Some thought the whole technology thing was a fad that would pass, but I knew it was here to stay, especially in education.

Others feared computers would replace teachers, but that didn’t happen either.”

Being literate in technology is about much more than just being in tune with the latest app or computer buzz. Nowadays, it’s also

about getting students ahead of the curve and preparing them for employment.

Whether it be through engagements in Google Hangouts or connecting students in California with classrooms in South Korea, Bolivia, and Spain.

“Watching students interact with media improves their performance,” says Thome. “When we look at the global competition, we need to accelerate our game and be competitive. When it’s time for them to get a job, accessing critical information and using new technology will be second nature to them.”

Even after working in education for 48 years, Thome still gets excited about the future and all the doors technology has yet to open. He believes the key to learning is actively engaging students. With all the high-tech tools out there, he says there’s no excuse for teaching or learning to be boring.

“There needs to be a shift in culture, where we teach kids about this century and not last century,” says Thome. “I can see this happening now and I’m excited to be in the middle of it.”

os Chargers abren el domingo lo que podría ser su última temporada en San Diego.

Mientras se espera que los residentes de la ciudad otorguen el respaldo que necesita en la votaciones de Noviembre para construir un nuevo estadio, la escuadra sandieguina se declaró lista para visitar a los Chiefs de Kansas City.

El equipo sabe que necesita comenzar fuerte la temporada para que sus triunfos en el terreno de juego se trasladen en votos favorables en las urnas.

De no obtener el consenso ciudadano para construir un nuevo estadio, los Chargers estarían pensando seriamente en mudarse a Los Ángeles la próxima temporada.

“Cada quien debemos hacer nuestro trabajo, nosotros debemos de preocuparnos por ganar partidos independientemente de cuales otras circunstancias son las que rodean a la franquicia”, dijo el mariscal de campo de los Chargers Philip Rivers.

El jefe de la ofensiva sandieguina llega al primer partido de la temporada con la intención de mantener el buen paso que tuvo el año pasado al sumar 4,792 yardas y 29 pases de

En la jornada ocho del Torneo Apertura 2016, el cuadro fronterizo viajará a Monterrey para enfrentar el sábado al cuadro rayado.

Tijuana llega a este encuentro ocupando el liderato general del torneo con 16 puntos y una racha de cinco partidos sin conocer la derrota.

A pesar de la buena campaña que llevan, los integrantes del equipo rojinegro prefieren mantener los pies en la tierra, sabiendo que todavía falta mucho camino que recorrer en el torneo.

región. Gracias a ellos, ahora alrededor de 500,000 estudiantes en más de 40 distritos tienen acceso a servicios de alta tecnología. Thome ha logrado mucho en su carrera, pero indica que el momento más especial fue el poder colaborar con el gobierno de México, logrando que miles de estudiantes de habla hispana en California tengan acceso a herramientas digitales de primera categoría.

Antes de mudarse a San Diego, Thome vivía en el Condado de Los Ángeles, donde también creció. De joven hablaba Inglés en la ciudad, pero en casa el español era el idioma indicado. Thome onoce por dentro y fuera el sistema educativo de California, sobre todo el perfil de los estudiantes, incluyendo quienes forman parte de la comunidad hispana. Años atrás, Thome fué maestro dentro del programa ESL, también conocido como inglés como segundo idioma, por lo conoce, tanto a nivel personal y profesional, los beneficios y desafíos de estudiantes bilingües.

“La brecha que existe en los estudiantes hispanos se basa en el factor económico,” explica Thome.

“Familias de altos recursos, como vemos por ejemplo en algunas zonas de Chula Vista, compran lo último de la tecnología. El problema surge cuando estudiantes tienen acceso a todo en la escuela y nada en casa. Una de las soluciones es que los distritos escolares le permitan a los estudiantes el llevar estas herramientas digitales a casa.”

El interés que Thome siente por la tecnología es una conexión que existe desde que era niño. Thome recuerda que era buen estudiante, pero consideraba a su hermano como todo un genio. De adulto, su hermano se dedicó a programar sistemas de computación. El hermano mayor de Thome siempre lo motivó a dar más y tener visión del futuro.

A pesar de que la mayoría de los expertos en el sector tecnológico son jóvenes, Thome dice que nunca se ha sentido fuera de lugar.

Thome recuerda que cuando trabajaba en el Distrito Escolar de la ciudad de Capistrano en los años 80, fué asignado como el coordinador técnico por tener una computadora Apple. En ese entonces era el único de todo el equipo con una computadora.

“Cómo han cambiado las cosas,” dice Thome mientras ríe. “Apenas estaban en venta las computadoras de IBM y pocas personas podían comprarlas. En ese entonces había quienes decían que el énfasis de la tecnología pasaría, pero yo sabía que sería algo permanente.

También existía el temor que las computadoras tomarían el lugar de los maestros, pero tampoco ha sido el caso.”

Estar al tanto de lo último de la tecnología va más allá de aplicaciones digitales y tabletas de último modelo. Este sector se está convirtiendo en un punto indispensable de aprendizaje que también está preparando a los estudiantes para el mundo laboral.

“Cuando vemos la competencia a nivel global, los estudiantes de San Diego tienen que estar al mismo nivel,” dice Thome. “Cuando llegue la hora de buscar trabajo, el usar la tecnología y todos los recursos digitales, será una cosa automática y su conocimiento será más codiciado.”

Después de trabajar en el sector educativo por más de 48 años, Thome aún se emociona por el futuro. Richard está convencido que la clave de la educación está en la participación activa de los estudiantes. Con todos los recursos disponibles hoy en día, dice que el enseñar y aprender no pueden, ni deben, ser aburridos.

“Se necesita dar un giro en la manera que se les enseña a los jóvenes,” añade Thome. “El enfoque tiene que basarse en este siglo y nó en siglos pasados. Es una transición que se está desarrollando y estoy encantado de ser parte del proceso.”

Las terapias y el trabajo con éstas mujeres revelan que, en la mayor parte de los casos, no se sufrió algún abuso sexual o doméstico de forma directa, pero se desarrollaron en hogares abusivos: espacios donde era común ver padres golpeadores y estar en constante contacto con humillaciones verbales. Lisbet Perez es una sobreviviente.

Ella sola enfrentó las dificultades de vivir en un hogar donde el abuso físico y verbal era una realidad. Ella asegura que, como muchas mujeres, lo más triste para ella era permitir esta violencia en su casa, cual afecta de forma directa a lo más preciado para una mujer: sus hijos.

Hoy las asociaciones buscan frenar este problema ante las consecuencias que estos casos pueden generar no solo en la mujer, sino en los menores de edad, quienes también se ven condenados en su mayoría a repetir patrones abusivos. Cuando más mujeres enfrentan estos traumas, sufren consecuencias que les impiden realizar al cien por ciento sus labores cotidianas y de madres, lo que genera el menor perciba con mayor susceptibilidad los abusos y no pueda recibir apoyo de su ser querido más cercano, su madre.

APOYOS CONTRA LA VIOLENCIA En San Diego existen diversos programas que de forma gratuita apoyan a mujeres víctimas de violencia intrafamiliar, desde teléfonos de emergencia que proporcionan las autoridades y asociaciones civiles, hasta campamentos para pequeños y terapias hacia las madres de familia en la región.

La Alianza por la Esperanza Internacional aseguró uno de sus mejores programas radica en un campamento para menores de edad denominado Pathways to Hope, o Caminos Hacia La Esperanza, en donde sin costo dan apoyo a jóvenes entre los 11 y 17 años de edad con el objeto de crear comunidades que los apoyen en la situación difícil que vivieron y no se sientan diferentes o aislados.

Otro de los proyectos es el de Proyecto Esperanza, que ayuda a madres que han sobrellevado los últimos dos años desde que dejaron a su pareja y buscan romper el ciclo en casa.

Ellas están arriesgando su vida y el futuro de sus hijos. No les puedo decir va a ser fácil su vida, que va a ser feliz, no, es muy difícil salir de esa situación. Pero vale la pena porque al final del camino recuperas tu libertad y le das la oportunidad a tus hijos de tener una vida mejor”.

Se espera que cientos de personas se reúnan para celebrar el mantenerse libre de drogas en Recovery Happens, un evento anual organizado por la Agencia de Salud y Recursos Humanos del Condado de San Diego y asociados de prevención y centros de tratamiento.

El evento de este año se realizará el sábado 17 de septiembre de 10 a.m. a 1 p.m. en Liberty Station NTC Park en Point Loma.

El condado y sus asociados organizan el evento para celebrar los logros de aquellos que están en recuperación y están viviendo una vida libre del alcohol y drogas.

Este evento gratuito contará con una feria de recursos y actividades familiares. La celebración es abierta al público de todas las edades, y el estacionamiento será gratis.

“La recuperación es un proceso de toda la vida, de la misma manera que personas manejan enfermedades como diabetes o problemas del corazón, se trata de celebrar la vida”, dijo Bridgeman-Smith. “Si

alguien logró 30 días sin usar drogas, la comunidad lo ve como algo que se tiene que celebrar y refuerza que hay vida después del uso de las drogas; se puede ser feliz y disfrutar de la vida”.

Bridgeman-Smith recomendó a las personas que tienen amigos o familiares que abusan de las drogas buscar información sobre cómo ayudar a sus seres queridos.

“Es muy importante que si aman o quieren a alguien, facilitarles toda la información que puedan sobre los servicios que hay disponibles”, dijo Bridgeman-Smith.

Hay diferentes canales para entrar a uno de los centros de tratamiento del condado, puede ser por prescripción, orden de la corte, o por decisión propia.

“Right know there are more users crossing from Mexico to United States because of long waits at the ports of entry,” said Revuelta. “The number of users changes depending on the dates. On Labor Day weekend, there were more people using CBX to go south than north.”

According to CBX data, there are over 850,000 people that have used their binational facilities since their opening on December 9, 2015.

Revuelta mentioned that the month with the highest usage was last July with over 150,000 users.

Revuelta mentioned that there were a lot of families using the CBX facilities during the summer, and that the type of users vary throughout the rest of the year such as businessmen that use the bridge.

The Tijuana airport has seen a growth in passengers from January to May 2016 by 32 percent, in comparison to January to May 2015, Brown said, and it is attributed to CBX. CBX offers three kinds of tickets: one way tickets are $16, for round trip tickets are $30, and a family pass is $55. The tickets can be purchased online or in person at the CBX terminal in San Diego or at the Tijuana Airport skywalk entrance. The family pass can only be purchased on site.
