Studio A The City Living Room


1. Macro Scale 1.1 Location

Ancoats and New Islington area is next to the city centre, with a tram link passing through the area.

2. Local Scale 2.1 Location

5-10 minutes walk from Ancoats and New Islington, it could get to New Islington tram station and some supermarket around. 10-15 minutes walk from this area, it could get to Piccadilly Garden, Piccadilly Station, etc. 15-20 minutes walk from this area, it could get to Arndale Shopping Centre and Vitoria Station.

2.2 Transport

These transport diagrams show the bus links, main station, bike and pedestrian route, vehicle road and car park. Bus lines are mainly distributed along the boundary of the area. The arrangement of the pedestrian road network is not comprehensive, and the pedestrian road in New Islington area is relatively sparse. Ancoats could get through by vehicles, but New Islington only has a few vehicle roads. There are many car parks in Ancoats, but a few in New Islington.

2.3 Land Uses

In Ancoats, there are many kinds of buildings: commercial buildings, mixed-use buildings, residence, etc. But in New Islignton, most of the buildings are residential housing. In Ancoats, there is a lawn where residents could have a rest and walk with teir dogs. In New Islington, there is a Cotton Field Park.

2.4 The Site

The site area is a connection of city centre. It is an entrance to the New Islington. It is an area has nice canal landscape. The site area has a Cotton Field Park, a New Islington Free School and a Medical Practice here. The total surface is about 77500 square metres.

3. Urban Design 3.1 Site Strategis

Our team mumbers are Alice, Yin and I. We proposed 3 different strategies for the site area. They are respectively Plan A, B and C.

3.3 Plan A: Urban Living Room

Proposed the gallery and theatre area on the Ancoats area side, because of the historical and cultural environment of Ancoats. Arranged the children playground next to the school, and dog  cat area next to the canal, opposite the residential buildings, so that residents could get here conveniently. The publiv park is located in the middle of the site, as an entrance to the area. Then, the commercial area next to the other main road around the site, so that it will have more people pass by.

The City for Children


1.Location

2. What is the project The project name is The City For Children The project’s aim is to provide a space for different ages of children (0-18) and families in the community and promote social networks across the community.

3. Why is the project ① Lifetime neighborhoods The form indicated that most people living in M4 district, which include A+NI area, are between 25-45. And when they are considering whether to continue living in this area, one of the considerations will certainly include their children.

11. Draft Sketches This draft shows the handdrawing of the Master Plan.

11. Draft Sketches Situation 1 shows the day of pet's home. The pets owner send their pets to the pet's home, then they go to work. In the morning, the staff of pet's home take the pets go to park to play. In the afternoon, students finish their course after school and go to the pet's home to play with pets. In the evening, the owner finish work and take his pet home. Situation 2 shows the children are having dancing and drawing class on the ground floor, their parents are waiting for their children in the cafe on the first floor. Situation 3 shows the Sure Start Centre, allotment and chicken, ducks, rabbits, birds'home area. Situation 4 shows the links between the senior activity centre, cinema, cafe and cakes, kitchen training, cake class, rest room and library. Situation 5 shows the evironment of Children's Hall and surrounding area.

The Children Activity Centre


1. What is the project

Site Area The Children Activity Centre includes performence and are rooms for children and art workers. The site area is surrounded by shool area, community area, common green area and a canal. So it connects well with surrounding environment.

2. Why is the project

According to the conclusion of Studio B, it could be known that the plot area is lack of children activity space and communication place for community.

5. Circulation  Function arrangement

Function arrangement includes private spaces and public spaces. Private spaces include instrument playing room (music museum), singing room (band exercise room), drawing room (artist working room), dacing room (dancing troupe room), children activity room, roof garden and the stairs and toilets in these spaces. They are for children and staff. Public spaces include cafe, garden in the middle of the site, restaurant, exhibition  performance centre and a toilet in these spaces. They are for community and visitors.
