Designed and constructed six sets of covered bleachers for a local soccer field using locally grown and harvested bamboo. Knowledge of local systems of operation, from material purchasing and quality control, to obtaining land permissions through public forum presentations led to a stronger tie to the community and a shared sense of responsibility toward the finished work.

RED LIGHT REHABILITATION, KOLKATA, INDIA 2009 Working directly with New Light, a nonprofit charitable trust in India, I helped design an incremental housing proposal for a long standing red light district in Kolkata, India. Rather than challenge the power structure that owns and operates the sex trade within Kalighat, we responded to an immediate and urgent need for improved, healthful living conditions for the sex workers and their families.

EXPERIENCE

RISD + ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON FOUNDATION GRANT, PROVIDENCE, RI POST-GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOW, AUGUST 2010-MAY 2011 Researched potential speakers and projects for a symposium addressing the intersection of art, design and health. Filmed and edited a series of interviews focusing on health and design innovation.

DOWNCITY DESIGN, PROVIDENCE, RI EDUCATOR 2011-CURRENT Entered an alternative learning high school to teach ideas of community engagement through building and design. Created a curriculum centered around student empowerment and community outreach. Incorporated material investigation, empirical testing, and energy conservation into various design approaches.

HB LLC, PROVIDENCE, RI DESIGNER/BUILDER, JUNE 2010 -OCTOBER 2010 Completed on-site construction and fabrication. Continuously worked to rethink construction details and improve on areas of quality and craftsmanship throughout the building process. Worked on a mill renovation drawing set and designed a fire-rated stair and enclosure, from concept through material connections.

USAID/THE ASIA FOUNDATION, PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA DESIGN CONSULTANT 2007 Developed visibility material including information sheets, stands, banners and assisted in the development and design of presentation material. Worked alongside the TipinAsia Consultant in redesigning the TipinAsia web site to provide accurate data, sourcing and information to counter-trafficking stakeholders.

INTERNSHIP

AARDVARCHITECTURE, GLEN FALLS, NY INTERN 2009 Fabricated and installed a customized curtain wall system. Worked alongside the architect to solve issues of water/air infiltration and thermal break. Assisted in other aspects of the construction process from routering/fastening structural connections to beam and rafter positioning.

3SIX0 ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN, PROVIDENCE, RI INTERN 2008 Participated in the design process and produced presentation materials for a National Parks Service open competition and a corporate RFP. Created a series of animations exhibiting past architectural work including 3D rendering work and photo collage.
