PORTLAND — Celebrating winter may be the last thing on the minds of area residents after last week’s storm, students at Portland High School will be a festive mood this week as Winterfest arrives. The school’s winter homecoming begins Monday, Feb. 7, and continues through Friday, Feb. 11. During the week, students have a variety of events and activities planned to mark the occasion. The featured event is the crowning of the 2011 Winterfest King and Queen, which will take place during half-

Windshield

time of Portland’s boys basketball game against Corunna on Feb. 11. Queen candidates include Audrey Dorshimer, Emily Draper and Courtney Moulton. King candidates include Will Augst, Brock Cochrane and Carson Seal. Members of the 2011 Winterfest court include junior representatives Angelia Walters and Justin Ouendag, sophomore representatives Ashley Blaschka and Jared Krausz, and freshmen representatives Courtney Gillengarten and Auston Brandt. Like the fall homecoming celebration, students will have a theme for the day to dress to for each day of Winterfest. Monday is Ugly Sweater Day. Tuesday is Future Day in which the students dress to the style of the career

they plan to be in after their high school days are completed. Wednesday will be Come As You Are Day, while Thursday has been designated Wacky Tacky Day. The week concludes with the traditional Red and White Day on Friday. The students will have other Winterfest activities to take part in during the week. On Wednesday, a powder puff volleyball match takes place, pitting the juniors against the seniors. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. Students will also take part in a Winterfest assembly during sixth hour on Friday. Also on Friday, a Winterfest dance will be held following the varsity basketball contest.

“Given those circumstances, this was an optimal place to establish a shelter in case the freeway was closed.” The shelter housed a few residents during the storm, but did not experience a large turnout. “It was strongly suggested that people stay off the roads and I think a lot of people exercised good judgement and heeded the warning,” said Yates. “Otherwise we would have had more people here.” Yates said the volunteers appreciated the support received by the middle school staff and Principal Todd Marsh, as well as the efforts of the Portland fire department personnel and Portland police officers. Members of the Portland police and fire departments were also prepared ahead of the storm, but also saw little action.

PORTLAND — Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction of an early spring may be been a small consolation to Portland-area residents as they spent Groundhog’s Day digging out from a blizzard. Approximately 8 to 13 inches of snow fell on the Portland area beginning in the evening of Feb. 1 and continuing through the morning of Feb. 2. The snow was accompanied by winds ranging from 25 mph to over 40 mph, prompting the National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids to issue a blizzard warning for the area starting at 5 p.m. on Feb. 1. The Portland and Pewamo-Westphalia school districts both canceled classes on Feb. 2 due to the storm. The Ionia County government offices at the courthouse in Ionia were also closed. The Grand Rapids chapter of the American Red Cross established an emergency shelter at the Portland Middle School during the afternoon of Feb. 1. The shelter was open on Feb. 2. “There was an anticipation that the freeway may have been shut down given the wide open stretch of freeway through this area,” said Ken Yates, Red Cross volunteer.

“No one was out during the night,” said Portland police chief Bob Bauer. “We handled a couple of stranded vehicle reports but that was it. There were no accidents. Everyone heeded the advice and stayed home.” The Ionia County Sheriff Department also responded to very few calls during the storm. “We handled between seven to 10 calls during the night,” said Lt. Roger VanderMolen. “We had some minor accidents and one report of a car in a ditch. For the most part, it appears everyone hunkered down for the storm.” Work crews with the Ionia County Road Commission began clearing roadways at about midnight on Feb. 2 and were continuing to work on a major roadways in the early afternoon of Feb. 2. “Most of the night work that we did was to assist emergency vehicles as they responded to calls,” said Dorothy Pohl, managing director of the Ionia County Road Commission. “We are still on the main trunklines and are just starting to get to the primary roads. We may not get to the gravel roads until Thursday.” Pohl said the road commission is responsible for 1,100 miles of county roads and 300 miles of state roads, including Interstate 96. She said the wind would also play a role in when the roads would be open. “Right now we are watching what the wind is doing,” said Pohl. “It had been coming mostly out of the north and affecting east-west roads. But if it shifts and comes from the southwest, the north-south roads would also be impacted.”

Portland girls fall to Lakewood, 34-29 By SCOTT YOSHONIS syoshonis@lsj.com

PORTLAND — Lakewood’s Anna Lynch scored 10 of her game-high 15 points in the last 1:36 to hand Portland their first CAAC White girls basketball loss of the season, and their first since 2009, 34-29 on Jan. 28. The loss dropped Portland to 8-4 overall and 5-1 in league play, while the win was the second big one in a row for the Vikings (8-4 overall, 3-3 CAAC White), who defeated fourth-ranked DeWitt only three nights previously. Portland coach Ray Kimball said that the momentum from that win helped the Vikings against his Raiders. “We got out-toughed by a pretty confident team tonight,” Kimball said. The contest was lost in the final two minutes, due in large part to the team’s Achilles heel, free-throw shooting. Port-

land missed seven free throws in the fourth quarter as a team, including the front end of both 1-and-1 opportunities. “Down the stretch, you have to make your free throws and take care of the ball,” Kimball said, “and we did a crappy job of all of that.” Sarah Trierweiler and Kelsey Spitzley each scored eight points to lead the Raiders, who took their biggest lead of the contest just before halftime, when Allison Russell beat the buzzer on a 10-footer that made the score 14-9 at the break. Points became hard to come by in the second half, as Lakewood turned up the defensive pressure, holding Portland without a field goal for the first 5:42 of the third quarter, and taking the lead. The Raiders are no strangers to defense themselves, which kept the Vikings from stretching the lead, and the game entered See

the fourth quarter with Lakewood holding a slim 20-19 advantage. With the score tied 24-24, Lynch hit a three-pointer with 1:36 left, and then converted seven of her eight free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Portland scored four points in the last five seconds, on a drive to the basket by Taylor Roe and the only time in the game when Portland made both of two free throws, by Madison Adams with 3.3 seconds left, making the final score 34-29. “We had our opportunities to make some plays,” Kimball said. “We didn’t finish on the offensive end, and we didn’t finish plays on the defensive end, giving

up second-shot opportunities.” Lakewood coach Tal Thompson said that beating the Raiders was bigger than knocking off DeWitt. “This was the toughest week on our schedule,” Thompson said. “To come out of it 2-0 is a pretty big deal. Number four in the state is pretty big, but this (Portland) is our rival.” The Raiders’ game at Fowlerville scheduled for Feb. 1 was one of the many casualties of the big snowstorm, and no reschedule date was available at press time. Portland will play at home twice this week, a potentially tricky nonleague contest against Charlotte on Tuesday, Feb. 8, and a CAAC White game against Corunna on Friday, Feb. 11.

Krausz drained a three with 6:40 left in the game to give Portland a 38-35 lead, which they would not relinquish. VanRiper scored the last of his game-high 17 points on his teams’ seventh putback with 2:20 left in the game, and Roe scored the last three points from the freethrow line to run out with the 47-39 win. The Raiders’ non-league game against Fowlerville, which was scheduled for Feb. 1 but snowed out, has been rescheduled for March 1. The team will hit the road for a non-league game at Charlotte on Tuesday, Feb. 8, before returning home on Friday, Feb. 11, for a CAAC White encounter with Corunna.

what would become a recurring theme of the game, a putback of a Portland missed free throw by Krausz that started an 8-2 run that closed the gap quickly, and cut the Viking lead to just one, 22-21, less than three minutes into the third quarter. Yet another converted freethrow miss, this time by VanRiper, gave the Raiders their first lead since 6-4, 26-24 with 4:26 left in the third quarter, which ended with the teams tied 33-33. A back-door layup by Connor Roe started the fourth quarter off on the right foot, and the Portland defense stepped up from there, allowing Lakewood just six points in the fourth.

We got on them a little bit at halftime. The second half was more like Portland basketball.” The Raiders enjoyed a considerable size advantage over the Vikings, whose only player taller than 6’3” on the varsity roster is a littleused 6’4” freshman. Still, Portland’s malaise allowed Lakewood to dominate the boards on both ends in the first half. But, as every other aspect of the game, it was a different story in the second. “It was a key down the stretch,” Pettit said. “Lakewood was beating us at our own game, they attacked the glass, they were getting offensive rebounds, and we pride ourselves on the offensive boards.” The second half began with

PORTLAND — Hunter VanRiper scored 17 points and Jared Krausz added 10 to lead Portland to a come-from-behind 47-39 CAAC White boys basketball win over Lakewood on Jan. 28. The fifth Raider win in the last six games improved their record to 8-3 overall and 3-3 in league play, but it didn’t look good at the outset. Portland stumbled out of the gate, trailing 13-6 after the first quarter and 20-13 at the half. Raider head coach Dave Pettit gave some of the credit for his team’s slow start to Lakewood’s matchup zone, which Portland had

difficulty negotiating throughout the game. “Obviously, with only 13 points at halftime, we really struggled scoring,” Pettit said. “We figured that we were going to have to turn it up defensively, because the halfcourt offense against them is really tough. They do a really nice job with that defense.” Pettit said that Portland’s exam week, and the resulting off day from school on the day of the game, also contributed to the team’s poor first half. “Everyone was taken out of their routine, and we could see that from the start,” Pettit said. “We made halftime adjustments, and the kids just came out and played harder.

The brutal winter temperatures remind me that yet another school year is half over! Here are a few of the good things that went on in our school buildings during the first semester of the 2010-2011 school year.

Portland High School

The greener side of life The new Environmental Studies course is helping Portland High School students see the greener side of life. Students have been involved in beautification and recycling projects. Recently the students toured parts of the campus of MSU to learn how Superintendent’s what they are learning in corner class can be applied through “green” projects. Students Charles have also been creating Dumas ideas of their own to help the environment through research projects. Community service is the theme A new Community Service Club has gained quite a bit of attention from the students at Portland High School. Students come together to learn and share the value of helping others through selfless acts. Our students have volunteered countless hours through this new club in addition to other community service projects done by the National Honor Society and the cheerleading team. Students are finding how rewarding it can be to help others. It is a H.I.T. With the passing of the vocational education millage last May, over 100 students from the Portland community are now able to continue to attend the Heartlands Institute of Technology (H.I.T.). A big thank you goes to all those who supported this effort. Our students are participating in the Dental and Health Occupations, Automotive Technology, Diesel/Heavy Equipment, Criminal Justice, Culinary Arts, Machine Tool, Plant/Animal Science, and Building Trades programs. Upon successful completion of any of these programs our students will be ready for an advanced level of learning or a job in their chosen field.

Portland Middle School

A fun fundraiser The Middle School Student Council sponsored a “Pennies for Patients” drive benefitting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Cancer has many connections to the families of both students and staff. The middle school stu-

dent council wanted to focus their efforts on raising money for a charity assisting in cancer research and care. With the added motivation of seeing their superintendent, principal and assistant principal kiss a pig, our middle school students raised over $3,000. Our students were praised for their efforts and were able to enjoy the kissing-of-the pig ceremonies at a special assembly just prior to their holiday break. Pillar of the Month Portland Middle School has added a new student recognition program focusing on students’ positive contributions to the learning environment. The Pillar of the Month program recognizes students who portray one of the Pillars of Character that are taught by Mrs. Kimball in our Life Skills classes. The six pillars are Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Each month teachers recognize a student for their demonstration of good character. A patriotic effort Mrs. Manion’s seventh grade English-Language Arts classes submitted essays for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Patriot’s Pen essay contest. Students were asked to write 300-400 word essays addressing the topic, “Does Patriotism Still Matter?” Seventh grader Trevor Trierweiler won the local competition and finished in fourth place at the VFW Regional competition. Nice work Trevor!

Westwood Elementary School

Junior lifesavers In conjunction with Michigan Blood (west Michigan’s equivalent to the Red Cross), Westwood Elementary School’s fifth graders have been learning about blood, beginning with its function in the human body and extending to its importance in local hospitals and communities. Students took part in a “blood-typing” exercise with the staff at Michigan Blood, learning their own blood types through the lesson. Our fifth grade students will help organize and run a blood drive in conjunction with Michigan Blood. Michigan Blood will run all donor-related aspects of the drive. Our students will be recruiting donors and helping out at the drive. This is a great opportunity for our students to participate in the wider community, an exercise we all want to encourage! Caring citizens As is the case each year, Westwood students have participated in a variety of opportunities to serve the Portland community. They participated in canned food drives

sponsored by the Portland Community Fund and Cheer for Charity this fall. Mr. Wesche’s and Mr. Nowak’s students participated in a collection of a wide variety of items for our troops overseas. Westwood students contributed to the Community Fund’s annual coat drive, too. Within the walls of Westwood, Mr. Fezzey’s fifth grade students handle our weekly recycling program, which includes both paper and plastic bottles. Mrs. Smiley’s students provide a monthly lunch to the staff at Westwood, a service which benefits the students and adds to our waistlines! As you can see, our students and staff are searching for and finding ways to make a difference in our corner of the world. We are hopeful that these connections, small as though they may be, will make a difference and demonstrate to our kids that they really can be the change they hope to see in the world.

Oakwood Elementary School

Bucket fillers Oakwood Elementary School is participating in the Bucket-fillers for Life program this year. This is an age appropriate way of talking to students about how they treat others. It is the foundation for anti-bullying. Our students are learning that when you treat others respectfully you are filling their bucket and when you are disrespectful to others you are dipping in to their bucket. Our goal at Oakwood is to be a school filled with “bucket- fillers.” The three “Be’s” We implemented three simple building rules for our students at Oakwood Elementary School this year. They are “Be Safe”, “Be Kind”, and “Be Neat.” These rules along with the DeBug system, a nonviolent, five step plan to handle conflict, were taught to all the students during the first month of school. This has given our students the tools to resolve conflicts in an acceptable way. Mileage Club expands Thanks to our many volunteers, we were fortunate enough to extend the Mileage Club to the fall this year. This is an opportunity for the students to walk or run during recess and keep track of the miles they accumulate. Each time a child completes a lap around the playground his/her mileage card is marked. When the children complete 20 laps around the playground, they earn a foot shaped charm. The students love the program and it encourages healthy habits. Charles Dumas is the superintendent of the Portland Public School District
