Fantastic, but frigid, fundraisers Persons who enjoy the snow and cold weather had two local events to take part in on Jan. 15. The annual Portland Winter Run 5k (left) drew approximately 200 runners to the city and raised funds for the Portland High School cross country and track programs. The race started and finished at Portland High School and was run on city streets.

Later in the day, the Portland Community Arts Council held its annual Portland Plunge (right) as eight brave persons took a quick swim in the Grand River to raise $1,000 for the arts council. Participants this year were Rush Clement, Andrea Eckert, John Hempel, Bernard Johnson, Joseph Ngo, Jason Osoff, Aaron Tomac, and Carol Walker.

IONIA — The Ionia County Board of Commissioners learned about various improvements throughout the county at its first committee of the whole meeting for 2011. Jim Valentine, director of Ionia County Central Dispatch, updated the board on a variety of projects and upgrades. “Right now, we are looking at installing an automated

vehicle location program,” said Valentine. “This will allow dispatchers to see all of the patrol cars in the county on a map. We hope to have this operational in mid to late February.” Valentine added that the installation of fiber optic lines at the Central Dispatch center has been completed and is waiting to take the next step of upgrading the telephones and electronic equipment. “Right now we are waiting on a disbursement from the state,” said Valentine. “Once we have that, the state

Hopefully this will be done by March.” Valentine also informed the board that the center is in the process of upgrading base radios with local departments throughout the county. “Currently the department is about 7 percent under budget, but we will not know our final numbers until February,” said Valentine. “However, I still expect that we will finish the year under our budget.”

PORTLAND — The Portland City Council had a lighter than usual workload with just one action item on its agenda on Jan. 17. The council approved the final payment of $11,514.79 to Cook Brothers Excavating for work on the Rivertrail loop between Charlotte Highway and Okemos Road. The payment includes the retainage that the city held while the project was being completed as well as $2,020 for a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund

Do You Think That Having Back Pain is Just a Normal Part of Life?

The fact is that those aches and pains may be warning signs that your back is wearing out, or degenerating, prematurely. Everyday, your spine has to handle the stresses you put on it. Poor posture or repeated movements that strain your spine (micro traumas), injuries like whiplash (major traumas), spine conditions present since birth (congenital conditions), and even your life-style may contribute to spinal degeneration. You may be able to prevent, slow, or halt spinal degeneration with the help of your chiropractor.

P-W board seeks input from citizens By TOM THELEN

tthelen@lsj.com

WESTPHALIA TWP. — The Pewamo-Westphalia Schools Board of Education has formalized a plan to hire the next superintendent for the district. The board is working with NorthStar Staffing Inc. of Haslett to conduct the search. A search timeline and job description have been developed. At this time, the position is being advertised and candidate applications are being accepted. Interested candidates have until March 14 to apply. Potential candidates must demonstrate leadership abilities, have experience in budget development and financial management, and also have knowledge of the education process and student development. P-W board members are also asking district residents to submit their thoughts by completing a survey. The survey asks for the resident’s thoughts on various topics, including the duties of the new superintendent and areas of the district’s operation that should be examined. The survey can be found on the district’s website at www.pw.k12.mi.us. The board requests that the surveys be completed and submitted by Feb. 4. The board plans to hold two rounds of interviews in April and hire the next superintendent in early May. The new superintendent would begin working at P-W in early June. The new superintendent will replace former superintendent Ron Simon, who resigned at the start of the current school year to accept a position with the Montcalm Intermediate School District. Roger Thelen has been serving as interim superintendent since Simon’s departure. Thelen had also served as interim high school principal for the district during the 2009-2010 school year.

TAX TIP

By: Lori Rademacher of Expert Tax Solutions, Inc.

Understanding the IRA Withdrawal Rules for Tax Year 2010!

Note to our retirees: If you are approaching the magic age of 70 1/2, then you probably know that it is wise to review your situation approximately six months before the golden day arrives to make sure you are up on the rules. There is much to know about making this particular transition and it has everything to do with taxes and financial planning. For instance if you turn 70 ½ in 2010, you should be set up to start receiving some withdrawals no later than April 1st, 2011. If you miss this or misunderstand this, you could be leaving yourself open for a hefty 50% tax on the minimum distribution due if not taken. (Note that Roth IRA’s are not under this rule). There are several other rules associated with this that are unique to each individual. Not sure how to handle this or if it’s handled? Your friendly, neighborhood tax accountant would be glad to help you out on this matter or any other questions you may have. No matter how you slice it….planning early could save you money and a headache!

“Most of these kids have played in the baseball program, and they know us,” Scheurer said. “They know our expectations. I don’t know if they get too much of us, but what a riot it is to coach them for two-thirds of the year.” That good feeling will be put to the test as St. Pats gets into the meat of its basketball schedule, with its next three games against the three teams with which it shares the top spot in the league, beginning with P-W on Jan. 21. Next week, the Shamrocks travel to Fulton on Wednesday, Jan. 26, and then host Bath on Friday, Jan. 28.

POTTERVILLE — Portland St. Patrick is enjoying their best boys basketball season in recent memory, after their 78-74 win at Potterville on Jan. 14 gave the Shamrocks a portion of the league lead in the Central Michigan Athletic Conference, with a record of 6-2 overall and 5-1 in CMAC play. Five different players scored in double figures for St. Pats in the game, led by sophomore Collin Lay with 16 points. Paul Pung and Ryan Wilcox each had 15 points, Jerrid Smith had 12 and David Simon added 10 against the Vikings, to put the Shamrocks into a four-way tie for first in the CMAC standings. That sort of shared scoring output has been a hallmark of the team all season, according to St. Pats head coach Mark Scheurer. “People ask me who our best player is, and we don’t have one,” Scheurer said. “That’s not a knock on any of the kids, but I was looking at our stat leaders today, and our high scorer (Wilcox) is averaging 13 (points) a game. Paul Pung has 10, and we have three other people averaging 7 to 9. Collectively as a team, I think we’re very good and very competitive. If you’re looking for that one first-team all-league-type person, I don’t think we have one.” That the Shamrocks have climbed into the upper tier of one of the toughest small-school leagues in the entire state, tied with Pewamo-Westphalia, Bath and Fulton and a game ahead of Laingsburg, who handed them their only league loss

so far, has a great deal to do with how coachable the team is. Scheurer said that coaching this group is a pleasure. “They want to learn,” he said. “How they listen to what you say and incorporates it into what they do, as quickly as they do, it’s just fun.” There is also a greater familiarity between the athletes and the coaching staff than exists at most schools, since Scheurer, along with JV basketball coach Dan Thelen, assist his brother Bryan coaching the Shamrock baseball program. Bryan, in turn, serves as assistant varsity basketball coach.
