Director says promotions pay off

Main Street momentum

PORTLAND — The Portland Main Street program is gaining momentum after two successful events. Patrick Reagan, Main Street manager recently upadated the Portland City Council on the success of the Portland Pay Day promotion and Oktoberfest celebration. The organization hoped to make it three in a row with the Holidayfest on the Grand event, which took place Nov. 19-20 in downtown Portland. Reagan stated that approximately $55,750 was spent in Portland businesses as part of the Pay Day promotion, which was held during the summer.

“That was down a little from the $57,000 that was spent last year, but all in all it was a another successful promotion,” said Reagan. “The Promotions & Marketing Committee did a lot of work, and we had a great event. The committee and the businesses are already looking forward to next year.”

Octoberfest

Reagan also reported on the success of the third annual Oktoberfest event, which was held Oct. 16. “This was a great event that brought a lot of people to the downtown,” said Reagan. “This is the first year that we have finished in the block financially. We had some great vendors, some great

activities and great food vendors. Everything just went very well.” The organization had high hopes of continuing that momentum with the HolidayFest on the Grand event. The celebration was co-sponsored by Portland Main Street and the Portland Community Arts Council. Among the events tentatively planned include a window decorating contest, wreath making workshop and various other demonstrations inside downtown businesses. “We had a Luminary Lane and a visit from Santa,” said Reagan. “We scheduled carriage rides on both Friday and Saturday this year, and also held our tree-lighting ceremony.” See Main Street/page 6

IONIA — The Ionia County Board of Commissioners has scheduled a public hearing in order to receive input on proposed changes to the county’s Road Commission Board. The public hearing is scheduled to take place during the board’s first regular meeting in December, currently scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 3:30 p.m. Meetings take place on the third floor of the Ionia County Courthouse. The Road Commission Board is currently made up of three members. The term of board member Herb Cusack ends on Dec. 31, although he has applied for another six-year term. Also, board member Earl Strater has submitted his resignation to take effect in the middle of January. The commissioners will appoint a replacement to fill the remainder of his term,

which ends in 2014. Faced with having to appoint two out of the three members within a month, the Board of Commissioners felt it was an ideal time to study the makeup of the Road Commission Board and possibly make changes One change that has been mentioned by the commissioners is increasing the members from three to five. The county would be divided into four areas and one members would be appointed from each area with the fifth member from any part of the county. “I like the idea of establishing quadrants and appointing a member from each area,” said Commissioner Larry Tiejema. “That way the local township leaders would know who the road commissioner for their area is and can communicate with them better.” Dorothy Pohl, managing director of the Ionia County Road Commission, told See Input/page 5

Another change that has been discussed is going from a board appointed by the Board of Commissioners to one that is elected by residents of the county. Mark Howe, Ionia County administrator, told the com-

Main Street: Projects successful DOOSIE’S Continued from page 1

The recent successes have led to more people stepping forward to assist the organization. “We have really gained volunteers,” said Reagan. “I have been getting more calls and the Main Street board has also been getting calls from people who want to help out. To me, that is a sign that the program is working.” Reagan credited the volunteers and board/committee members with the recent successes “The Main Street program is not a government program ut is volunteerdriven,” said Reagan.

“I may be the director, but the volunteers are the ones who are doing the heavy lifting. These events are put on by the efforts of our volunteers who have been doing some amazing things. I think the program has succeeded before the work of the volunteers. “What’s more is you have more businesses stepping up to participate in these events,” added Reagan. “The Block Party was had some business sponsors who had never sponsored anything before that. The same was true with Oktoberfest. And we have more businesses taking part in HolidayFest. To me, that speaks volumes to the success of the program.”

Reagan said the program’s success can also be seen in the building vacancy rate in the downtown area. “When you look at this economy, you would think we would be struggling. But our vacancy rate is at 3 percent,” said Reagan. “We have new businesses that continue to come in as well as businesses who are adding employees.” Portland was selected as one of the first four Michigan Main Street communities in 2003. The success of the Main Street program in Portland and other communities has led to other communities earning the distinction.

Upper Respiratory Tract Infections ‘Tis the season.... Your child is hot, flushed, has no appetite, is listless, has diarrhea or vomiting, has a runny or congested nose and sounds like your Saint Bernard. OK, so it’s this flu thing - it has been “going around” you say. These words reverberate through our Center every day. Some people take peace that other children are also afflicted. There seems to be some kind of safety in numbers it seems. The other thing that we as a society have been taught is that this child is sick. Yes, absolutely! There is no question in our minds. This is “sickness” at its best. But wait.....

Let’s look at this in some detail. Your child has a fever. This is actually a good thing. It is your body’s way of literally “burning” the bug. It is also the result of all the necessary body activities kicked into high gear to

November 21, 2010

fight for survival.

All this extra work produces extra heat - Fever. It is that simple. At the same time, however, the eyes take on a glassy appearance the result of being continually washed with tears to cool down the cornea, which is very heat sensitive. In its wisdom, your child’s body may want to get rid of this germ really fast - diarrhea and vomiting comes to mind. There isn’t a quicker way! This is good! LJ-0100047960

Your child may be competing with your Saint Bernard. It is simply another portal of exit for the germs that have invaded his body. Breathing and respiration also increase - your child literally exhales the invading organism faster. You’ll notice that the skin is moist and clammy - simply another method of exit for the bugs. At the same time, however, you notice that your child has no appetite. Even McDonald’s, his all time “fave” gives him the heebie-jeebies. The reason is that his body energy is geared towards survival and is on emergency stand-by. There is no energy wasted digesting food. You, by now, are probably thinking, “I didn’t know that.” There you have it - the logic behind the scenes. Pretty amazing isn’t it? In case you didn’t know this, your nervous system, that amazing computer-Internet complex that runs all of you, is responsible for all this marvelous activity. It is the system that causes your immune system to spring into action to protect you - any way it can.

This is not “sickness.” It is an expression of health. It is your body doing exactly what it needs to do, in order to regain your health. I am not saying you have to like it, though, but it is, nevertheless, in your best interests. Whenyourchildisfeelinglikethis, parentshavethecompulsion to intervene and interfere with this process unknowingly - cough suppressants, anti-fever medication, antibiotics, etc. We have been carefully taught that a child needs these drugs to be healthy. Nonsense! Your child simply needs no interference.

There are a number of things you can do, however, to help your child while his/her body is “doing its thing”;

A. Have your child checked by a chiropractor to make certain his/ her nervous system is functioning optimally so it can handle this “sickness” thing.

Ethan Childs, DC

B. Lots to drink. Water is best but kids don’t like it. You can use diluted fruit juice C. Lots of rest and vegging out. In the event that your child is not improving on his own in a week, it means that his immune system is weak and crisis care

may be needed. Call us.

Community Fund goal $15,000 tions. Last year, the organization’s Christmas Giving Program provided a Christmas dinner, socks, hats and gloves to over 165 families in the Portland School District. In addition, over 300 children received gifts and a shoebox filled with goodies. Residents of local nursing homes received personal care items. ACS seeks drivers

LANSING — Road to Recovery is an American Cancer Society volunteerbased driving program that provides free transportation to and from medical centers for cancer patients undergoing treatment. The Society is in need of volunteers to help drive cancer patients to and from their appointments in Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham counties. “Everyday cancer patients are in need of treatment and they have no way to get there,” notes Julie Renner, community program representative for the American Cancer Society. “For some, the need is as simple as not owning a car or not feeling well enough to drive. But there are other issues, too, where family and friends may not be able to cover all treatments due to schedule conflicts or treatment facilities may be far from home, creating extra stress and expense.” Right now, the American Cancer Society is recruiting volunteers from throughout Clinton, Eaton and Ingham counties to help drive cancer patients to and from their treatment. According to Renner, volunteer drivers should be able to donate five to 10 hours of their time each month as their schedule allows. To learn more about Road to Recovery or to volunteer for this program, call your local American Cancer Society office at (517) 332-3300. For cancer information, contact your American Cancer Society anytime at 1-800-227-2345 or visit www.cancer.org. — From the American Cancer Society

Hunters asked to donate game

LANSING — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) encourages the general public to join hunters in the effort to provide processed wild game meat to local families in need. Last year, more than 23,000 pounds of venison was donated to food programs throughout Michigan enough to supply more than 100,000 meals. “Michigan’s first settlers often relied on hunters to supply fresh meat for survival. Today, we have the opportunity to continue that

tradition by helping those who are experiencing hard times,” says Raymond Rustem, of the DNRE’s Marketing, Education and Technology Division. Hunters can help in one of two simple ways. When purchasing a hunting license they can tell the agent of their interest to make a monetary donation to Michigan Sportsman Against Hunger (MSAH). The agent will add your donation to the overall cost. Secondly, hunters should consider taking and donating an extra deer through one of

the licensed processors registered with MSAH. Many of these processors also participate in the “Give a Pound” promotion, where hunters can donate some of the ground venison from their processed deer. Individuals who do not hunt can also support this important program. Non-hunters can donate by going to the Michigan E-Store. Monetary donations are used to support the cost of processing the venison for distribution. — From the Michigan DNRE

ach year on November 11, St. Patrick School celebrates Veteran’s Day with our annual Veteran’s Day program. It provides our students, staff, and families the opportunity to celebrate those who have served our country. Our goal is to make this a learning and educational experience for our students, while also giving our veterans the respect they so much deserve. As usual, this year’s celebration did not let me

Staff Sergeant Shane Vanderkuyl, director of U.S. Air Force recruiting for the Lansing area and Staff Sergeant Michael Moore, director of U.S. Air Force recruiting for the Muskegon area honored us by taking time out of their busy schedules to attend our program. They spoke of their experiences in the Air Force and the places they have been in service to their country. They also explained some of the benefits of joining the military. The program continued with high school student council president Adrienne Thelen reading the names of military personnel serving in the military from St. Patrick Parish. Adrienne’s presentation was followed with eighth grade students Shelby Miller and Bailey Sch-

neider, sophomore Elle Lehman, and junior Hannah Harte reading their VFW Patriot Pen Essays. This was followed by a rousing rendition of America the Beautiful by the St. Patrick first grade students. Fr. Larry King led us in a closing prayer followed by the playing of TAPS by VFW Post 4090. The VFW Honor Guard ended the ceremony with the Retrieval of Colors.

Thanks to veterans

I look especially forward to our annual Veterans Day assembly. As a former social studies teacher, I enjoy sitting and listening to the veterans share stories of the places they have been and their personal experiences. I am thankful and appreciative to have the opportunity to meet and talk with all of the veterans who attend each year. I would especially like to thank everyone who helped make this ceremony such a wonderful and moving experience. Thank you to the veterans and their families, to Staff Sergeants Vanderkuyll and Moore, and to the staff who worked so hard to put it all together. May God bless America!

ith the elections over, most political headlines are focusing on 2011 and the policy agenda of a new administration. However, the 2010 legislative session has not finished, and I have had many constituent questions regarding what a “lame duck” session means. In a nutshell, “lame duck” refers to session days that occur late in the year when some politicians have lost their elections but not their right to vote. Others may be leaving due to term limits. With more than 50 percent out of office for one reason or another, this year’s lame duck will in actuality be a very large flock. Intellectual stimulation crucial for our kids R

esearch clearly shows the vital importance of good care, intellectual stimulation, love and nurturing throughout childhood and especially the early years. Children with close parental contact and supervision, children who feel secure and well-loved, children who can count on their parents’ support and discipline and genuine interest

Superintendent’s corner Charles Dumas

absolutely soar in school… and in everything else they do. Conversely, children denied adult care, support and guidance function poorly in

school and may suffer irreparable damage that will handicap them throughout their lives. The educational impact of such parental neglect, however unintended, is devastating. Sadly, this type of neglect can, and does, come from homes of all economic levels. It is imperative that our children gain parental support early in their education.

The challenge is to find ways to spend time with our children and to be the best influence we can be on them during the time we spend with them. Making the time involves sacrifice and tough choices, but it is worth it. The time we spend with our children now will pay big dividends for the rest of their lives. Here are a few ways to think about making time for our kids:

• List your priorities; Use calendars to schedule family time. Make “To-Do” lists. • Examine your schedule; Eliminate time wasters like too much TV. Use small bits of time for math facts or spelling. Use time in the car for word games. • Set specific goals like: “We will all sit down at the dinner table for a family

meal at least three times a week.” • Change your schedule; Take time off to volunteer at school or take a trip with your child’s class or club Just say “No.” It is okay not to be on every committee. A family night is a commitment too. Charles Dumas is the superintendent of the Portland Public School District.
