Proactive for environment Dansville history Local auto body shop puts big focus on cleaner air By CHRISTIE BLECK cbleck@lsj.com

MASON — Being environmentally friendly doesn’t mean a business has to take a big financial hit. Mason Auto Body Repair is proof of that. Bruce Wigginton, president of the body shop located at 805 Kerns Road, is thinking long-term in that regard. “We all have children,” Wigginton said. “We’re going to have grandchildren.” So it stands to reason that people want a clean environment for the next generations. But they still have a business to run now. To be environmentally conscious, Wigginton has taken steps to comply with federal standards even before they were required. And it’s saving Christie Bleck money. “It’s just a win-win situation for us,”Wigginton said. “We didn’t have to change.” But change they did, which resulted in the Michigan De- Painter Scott Gorrell works among environmentally partment of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) friendly water-borne paints at Mason Auto Body and the Automotive Service Association of Michigan hon- Repair. oring the company for its efforts at a recent awards preAgain, that makes good business sense, according to sentation. DANSVILLE — Dansville High School graduate Kelen Gailey continues to work on his yearbook history project. However, he also wants to start a Dansville Historical Society. Gailey, though, is busy being an Olivet College student and not yet having the money to just start up a society. “So, my hope is to begin to collect items, such as scanning items like the yearbooks and pictures, and be able to start possibly an online society and then once I have my own place and a job, finding a building or building my own to house all of the items,” Gailey said. According to Gailey, he’s looking for any thing Dansville-related for the museum — everything from pictures, school, farming, family histories or other items. “My feeling is that everyone should be remembered, from those who made the papers to those who broke their backs to keep food on the table for their family,” Gailey said. “So many places focus on the headline names or the big events, and in many cases it is the little guys who are the true backbone of the community.” Then there’s the yearbook project. “One of the projects that I am currently doing is a yearbook project ,which entails finding yearbooks from 1925-1948 to help complete Dansville High School’s year-

book collection,” Gailey said. Gailey said he’s not looking to buy or obtain someone’s yearbook, but to simply make a scan of the yearbook and other Dansville school-related material. After he reproduces the yearbooks and the techniques are perfected, he eventually wants to sell them to anyone interested. The price of the yearbooks from 1925-1948, he said, will range from $20-$30. Gailey said he’s looking into a company that can scan hardcover books and hopes to have those from 1949-1999 completed on an on-demand basis. Gailey said the finished products would be returned in three to four months. The cost of the yearbooks from 1949-1999 will range from $35-$45. Gailey also said he’s looking for yearbooks from 1925-1945. He already has volumes from 1946-1948, but they are a part of the softcover books that will cheaper to make, so they will be priced in the same range as the older volumes. “The cost is greater than this for me, but the hope is that more than one person will want that same year, and after about three yearbooks of the same year, the money will become profit to use toward reproducing more yearbooks,” Gailey said. Gailey said he’s also interested in any other Dansvillerelated memorabilia, such as pictures and family histories. For details, contact Gailey at (517) 589-8473 or kelenklgailey@hotmail.com.

Letters to the editor Oesterle appreciative

Thank you to each individual that supported Candie Oesterle in her quest for the Vevay Township clerk’s position. Your kindness, generosity and kind works about my mother were greatly appreciated. In my eyes, my mother lost nothing. Rather she gained the knowledge that the lifelong friendships she has established in the community endure. She gained the respect of many who watched her fight a good, clean campaign. And her grace and courage, despite difficult circumstances, have inspired many, including me. I have never been more proud of her or more proud to be a member of the Oesterle family than now. And a special thank you to those employees of the township office who made the past few months extremely difficult and made it clear future employment was not an option. Thank you for showing the entire township what a winner my mother really is. Angela J. Oesterle Mason

was the oldest. The 4-H and Honor Society also were represented. Everyone there has a good story. A cross-section of the type of person involved includes: Rick, who has played Santa for thousands of kids; Jim, who maintains a National Wildlife Federation-certified wildlife habitat; Tony, who maintains the native garden; and Jeff, the Professional Employees of Sparrow Hospital (PECSH) president who recently made your life safer. The park is closed for the winter. We will have more projects in the spring. Please see Facebook “Save Rayner Park” for updates or contact me at Papamaddix@aol.com Jim Maddix Mason

On way to championship

My dog has recently been invited to the Eukanuba National Dog Championship in Long Beach, Calif., on Dec. 5. If we win in the morning we compete in the evening in the herding group, which will be televised on Jan. 23, 2011 on ABC. Thanks go to my sponsors: Buddies Pub and Grill, Parkway Dental, Dr. Yancy Tygeson and Dr. Jaqueline WeGrateful to Big Boy stafall, Dr. Laurie Kaufman, Linda Barnes, and Kundinger This is a thank you for the free breakfast that the Big Farms of Gagetown. Boy restaurant of Mason provided for veterans on Veterans Jennifer Questa and Lorie Barnes Day. What a great thing to do. It was really appreciated. 5 C’s Collies Ron Underhill Williamston Mason On Nov. 20 a wonderful event happened. Approximately 60 community-minded individuals helped move a ton of leaves in Rayner Park. The event kicked off at 9 a.m. as close friends and family showed up and immediately pitched in. Minimal to no instruction was required. A couple of men used a trailer and moved sticks (some the size of logs). The city provided two 9-hp and two 8-hp leaf blowers and four rakes. Volunteers spent an average of two hours nonstop, the youngest being was a toddler. I am 60 and I don’t think I

I recently hosted a ‘“Turkey Fest” for 40 children and 10 adults. I wanted to have a typical dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, baby carrots and choice of pie. Since I don’t cook, I called my dear friends at Ellie’s Country Kitchen.” Brian Stiffler at the right time and place delivered all of the above in cookers so everything was kept warm. The food was abundant and absolutely delicious. Thank you, Brian and Ellie’s. Might I suggest if anyone would like an affair catered, call Brian. It’s very affordable, and I promise you won’t be disappointed. Sandy Bowden-Whelton Williamston

Mason police report Between Nov. 16-22, police investigated 55 reported incidents involving a variety of activities. These are some of those incidents.

Some scream

Nov. 16: Officers responded to a Mason residence after receiving a dispatched report from the complainant that during a telephone conversation, the complainant could hear a woman screaming on the other end and a male telling her everything was all right there. Officers found the couple inside the home, and interviews determined the suspect and the victim were both talking to the complainant by phone when the suspect became frustrated because the victim refused to talk any more and reached out, pushing the victim against the wall. The complainant reported the scream sounded like that made when someone was hurt. An audio recording made by the complainant substantiated the caller’s reason for concern. A neighbor, working outside, also reported hearing screaming coming from inside the residence. The suspect was arrested and taken to the Ingham County Jail and lodged. The Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office issued a warrant charging the suspect with domestic assault and battery.

Long drive for nothing?

Nov. 16: An officer was dispatched to Bond Skate Park for three trespassers skating inside the park. The park is closed for the season, clearly posted as such, with all access ways secured. The officers found the suspects’ car parked in front of the “closed for season” sign and contacted the trio, who had to climb the fence to exit the park. All three acknowledged knowing the park was closed for the season but not having been aware of this nor finding out until they had driven all the way from Howell. They reported they decided to skate anyway after such a long drive. They were sent on their way with a citation each for violation of city park rules.

Driver-text fail

Nov. 17: While patrolling near the downtown, an officer stopped a car for numerous traffic offenses and discovered the driver was texting while driving. The officer also noted the distinct odor of marijuana, which led to further investigation. Although no drugs were located, the officer did find a black air soft replica pistol, a set of handcuffs, a collapsible baton, a folding knife and a dark blue uniform jacket — same style issued to police and security personnel. The driver was released from the scene with a citation for the traffic offense and driving while texting, and the baton was seized. It turned out the collapsible baton was stolen from a residence in Lansing, but the owner will not prosecute.

Suspicions warranted

Nov. 18: While patrolling South Jefferson near South Street, an officer noticed a car with an equipment violation whose

driver appeared to be doing what she could to avoid the officer following her. After his attention and suspicions were aroused, the officer obtained information that the vehicle’s owner had a suspended driver’s license and was wanted on two contempt charges, both originating from driving while suspended charges. The driver was contacted and admitted to “freaking out” upon seeing the officer and having knowledge of the suspension and warrants. She was arrested and taken to the Ingham County Jail, where she was lodged for the two warrants and a new charge of driving while license suspended. The car was turned over to a family member who was called to pick it up.

Got pot?

Nov. 19: Officers were called to a Mason home regarding a property dispute. The resident would not relinquish the property belonging to a former friend because she didn’t want to allow the other back into her residence. It was at first thought the dispute was resolved with the first call, but the resident kept calling back about repeated phone calls by the suspect who she claimed was threatening her. Officers went to the place the suspect was staying and soon found it was the home of a medical marijuana user who was not present. The suspect was, however, and had helped himself to the medicinal stash. It was reported he was hiding in the basement from the officers because of this. Once he had been flushed out of his hiding place by the residence occupant, he was cited for marijuana use. The medicinal marijuana user was warned regarding the law that required her stash be in a locked storage area — not to be shared by anyone. The Prosecutor’s Office will be consulted to determine if the medicinal marijuana cardholder should be charged for violating the act.

residential facility on Kerns Road where a staff member reported being assaulted by a 17-year-old resident. The victim stated the suspect was playing loud music and refused to turn it down. When the victim went to turn the music down herself, the suspect began yelling and pushed her. She fell backwards, almost on top of a baby sitting on the floor. The victim stated the suspect then threatened her with a curling iron and she wanted the suspect arrested. The assault was corroborated by a nearby witness. The suspect was arrested for assault and taken to the Ingham County Jail, where she was lodged. A warrant for assault and battery was issued the following day by the Ingham County prosecutor.

Assault warrants issued

Nov. 21: An officer was dispatched to a disturbance in the hallway of a Mason area apartment house. The caller reported a loud argument and fighting between a male and female and blood sprayed about. The officer found blood spatters and smears throughout the hallway, indicating someone was probably seriously injured. When the officer approached the apartment door, he noticed the blood-covered door knob turning and called out for the door to be opened. When no response was forthcoming and it was obvious someone inside was badly hurt, the officer tried to enter but soon found the door barricaded

Nov. 20: A suspicious vehicle was reported to be frequenting Brookdale Avenue. The complainant stated he keeps seeing an occupied blue mini-van parked on the street in his neighborhood early in the morning. Whenever another vehicle drives by, the mini-van leaves, which seems suspicious. He described the vehicle as having a broken-out rear window that was covered over with plastic. The complainant provided a registration plate, and the vehicle owner, a Lansing resident, was located. The vehicle owner admitted to coming into Mason, hunting scrap metal to supplement her income and help pay the medical costs of her three children. She said she only picks up what she finds put out for garbage. She also apologized and said she would cease doing what she was if it was illegal. She was told that no evidence was present to indicate a crime. The complainant was apprised of the officer’s findings.

Ironing out dispute

Nov. 21: An officer was dispatched to a

from the inside — it was later found that two sofas had been stacked, leaning against the door. Having had prior experience with the suspect, the officer decided to call for help and place himself in a position to observe both apartment entrances, since the suspect had run out the back door during a prior incident, thus eluding the officer. The officer called for assistance, and four Ingham County deputies responded. Contact was finally made with the suspect, who claimed his wife and baby were inside with him and he would only surrender if shot. Neighboring apartments were evacuated before the officer and deputies gained access by forcing the door open enough to allow a tight fit through. They were then confronted with an excited male suspect who was covered with blood and standing with the dining room table over his head, which he was about to hurl. The officer subdued the suspect by applying an electro muscular devise (Taser), causing the suspect to fall to the floor where he was immediately handcuffed. Further investigation found the man and his wife had been involved in an argument over his being at a neighbor’s watching sports and not at home with the family. Although he first claimed his wife stabbed him, the suspect recanted, stating she pushed him

through a window and he cut both arms, which was the origin of all the blood markings and trail. The suspect was left at a medical facility to be treated for injuries. It was discovered from family members that the victim had fled the home with the baby prior to the police arriving. She was safe, but the deputy interviewing her found evidence she had been assaulted by the suspect. The Ingham County prosecutor issued a two-count warrant charging the suspect with resisting and obstructing Police and domestic assault-second.

Nov. 22: A Mason resident reported a friend had broken into his apartment. He claimed the friend was able to shrink himself at will and slip under the door to gain entry — and that the friend could also make himself invisible. The officers found no evidence to substantiate the claims and had medical personnel come to give the complainant a medical evaluation. The complainant was cooperative, but declined going to the hospital for assistance. Through questioning, it was determined the man was not a danger to himself or others so he was requested to go inside his residence.

“I was only 47 when I learned I needed open-heart surgery. Shortness of breath and numbness in my arm led me to the Allegiance Emergency Department, which revealed a defective heart valve and a blocked artery requiring immediate surgery. While most of that day is a blur, I recall heart surgeon Dr. Mahendar Macha clearly explaining everything. Today, he is my hero. I’ve never experienced such compassionate healthcare.
