Holt resident appointed to Great Lakes council By WILL KANGAS

HOLT — Holt’s Jim Bredin loves the Great Lakes and now he will serve on a council that will keep the office of the president aware of its health. Bredin, who has lived in Holt for 30 years, was named Assistant Asian Carp Director of the White House Council on Environmental Quality. “I’ve truly enjoyed the Great Lakes and my goal is to ensure that my grand-

HOLT — A word processing class at Holt High School will have their work published and help a community tradition at the same time. The Delhi Tree Lighting Celebration committee was looking for a new way of designing the Community Songbook for this year’s ceremony, which will be Dec. 1 at the Holt Community Services Center. Songbooks are used to sing along with the Holt High School choir and band during the celebration. There is an additional songbook for HCN readers on pages 13-20. The student-made songbook will be at the celebration. “Teacher Nancy Meredith said her word processing students

would love to work on it,” celebration co-organizer Gail Hayhoe said. “This became a class project with the students eager to put their knowledge to work on a real project and have their work published,” she said. The class was given the assignment and each student prepared a page for the songbook. Songbooks are available in various locations around the community, including the Holt/Delhi branch of the Capital Area District Library. Holt teacher Nancy Meredith said art teacher Heidi Irvine referred the project to the school’s business department. “But she also provided her students with the opportunity to contribute original art work to include in the songbook,” Meredith said.

“Two of the images in the songbooks are pieces that her students created,” she said. Meredith said she was excited about the project. “It provided my students with an opportunity for real life application of the Microsoft Word skills they have gained in word processing class,” she said. It wasn’t easy, and they didn’t have much time, Meredith said. “We had only 4 and a half days to complete the project and could have used a bit more time but there was a deadline to be met,” she said. Meredith said she was impressed with her students. “They demonstrated that they truly cared about producing a quality songbook and were excited that they were developing something that would be used in the community.” she said.

tabbed to fight carp

“Asian Carp Czar” will join Bredin on the council and oversee the $80 million in federal response monies tagged to keeping the invasive species out of the Great Lakes. “In my mind there’s nothing better than to sit, with my wife on the pier in Grand Haven and watch the sun go down,” Bredin said. Bredin is a graduate of MSU’s Dept of Natural Resources (Aquatic Biologist) with an MA in Environmental Administration from Western Michigan University. He was the Assistant to the Director of the Office of the Great Lakes for 20 years before this move. Bredin was involved with implementation of many aspects of the state Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, and was on the

team that settled the Saginaw Bay Natural Resources Damage Assessment, as well as helped implement the Michigan Ballast Water Reporting Program. “I’m most proud of being on the Michigan team that successfully negotiated the Great Lakes Compact,” he said. Asian carp have been identified as a major environmental threat to the health and well being of the lakes in recent years. “I want to ensure that Asian carp are prevented from being introduced into the Great Lakes,” Bredin said. “One of the main focuses will be on increasing and improving communication. I will keep the team informed as to what information is being presented to the public and respond with information that correctly frames our efforts.”

DELHI TWP. – The holiday tradition continues. Two Holt students were selected to help light the tree at the 15th Annual Delhi Tree Lighting Celebration on December 1. This year the students chosen were Zach Cripe, 4th grade student at Sycamore Elementary School, and Cameron Maysonet, 4th grade student at Midway Elementary School. Students have been picked on a yearly basis by the school district to pull the switch at the ceremony, including those that have had fathers who could not be there for Christmas because they were serving in the armed forces. According to co-organizer Gail Hayhoe, back again this year is the North Pole Express mailbox, by

special arrangement with Santa Claus, has been placed in the lobby of the community services building just outside the library entrance. From now until Christmas, boys and girls can mail their letters to Santa Claus from this mail box, and Santa’s elves will deliver them directly to Santa at the North Pole. “The children are urged to include their mailing address so Santa can answer their letters.,” she said. This year’s tree lighting celebration and sing a long is at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Delhi Community Services Building, 2074 Aurelius Road. Like last year, hot chocolate and cookies will be served in the lobby before and during the celebration at no charge. Holiday music will be provided by the Holt High School band and choir who

But some types of loss impact our lives profoundly-- like the loss of a loved one, the loss of your health, or the loss of one of your senses- your hearing, for instance. Dictionaries delivered from Kiwanis Club On November 11, members of the Holt Kiwanis Club delivered dictionaries to the third grade students in the Holt Public School District. This is an annual project for the Kiwanis Club. Each student is given a Webster’s Student Dictionary for use in the classroom and to take home with them at the end of the year. This year over 500 dictionaries were handed out. Kiwanians Roy Caldwell, John Hayhoe, and John Bush delivered dictionaries to Sue Seyfarth’s third grade students at Wilcox Elementary School.

HOLT — The Give-A-Kid-A-Christmas is in full swing in Holt and Dimondale. A number of businesses have decorated Christmas trees with stars that list a needy child’s wish. Kari DeRosa of the Give-A-Kid Projects urges community members to choose a star, purchase the gift listed, and then return the unwrapped gift with the star attached by December 11. Those gifts will then be given to the parents to insure that every child has a gift this Christmas season. It is also possible to adopt an entire family for the holiday season. If you are interested in adopting a family, contact Kari DeRosa, 694-7920, for more information. You can find star decorated trees at: Holt United Methodist Church, Holt Presbyterian Church, Union Bank in Dimondale, Holt Christian Church, Advanced Insurance Market, Volz Family Chiropractic, Holt High School Counseling Office, Dart Bank, Victory Lane, Holt-Delhi Public Library, and DeRosa’s Party Store. Monetary donations can be sent to Give-A-Kid Projects, PO Box 576, Holt, MI 48842. When you start planning your Christmas shopping, please remember to stop at any of the local businesses, pick up a star, and add a deserving child to your shopping list.

Still Time for Year-End Financial Moves The holiday season is always a busy time of year, so you’re probably pretty busy. But it is important to take some time now to evaluate year-end financial moves that may be beneficial in preparing for your financial future. Which year-end moves should you consider? You will want to talk to your financial advisor and tax and legal professionals first, but here are a few ideas to get you started: • Boost your IRA contributions. You have until April 15, 2011, to fully fund your IRA for the 2010 tax year, but the sooner you finish with your 2010 contribution, the quicker you can get started on your 2011 contribution — and the earlier in the year you fund your IRA, the more time you give your account the opportunity to grow. • Put more money into college savings plans. If you have a 529 college savings plan for yourself or someone else, consider putting more money in before year-end. You can gift up to $13,000 ($26,000 per married couple) per person per year without gift tax consequences. However, this must be accomplished by year-end. • Be generous. If you’ve been thinking of making charitable gifts, don’t put them off any longer. As long as you make a donation to a qualified charity before the year ends, you can claim a deduction on your 2010 tax return. For example, if you donate $100 to a charitable group [either a religious organization or one that has received 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service], and you’re in the 25% tax bracket, you can deduct $100 (with a tax benefit of $25) when you file your taxes for 2010, providing, of course, that you itemize. If you donate stocks or other types of assets, you may also be able to save on capital gains taxes, because it will be the charity, not you, that eventually sells those assets. • Sell your “losers.” If you own investments that have lost value since you purchased them, you can sell them before 2010 ends and then use the tax loss to offset capital gains you may have earned in other investments. If you don’t have any capital gains, you can use up to $3,000 of your tax losses to offset other ordinary income. If your loss is greater than $3,000, you can “carry over” the excess and deduct it from your taxes in future years. However, if you then want to repurchase the investment you sold, you’ll need to wait at least 31 days to avoid violating the IRS’ “wash sale” rules.

Considering these moves before the year ends may help you better prepare to address you financial picture in 2011.

• Take capital gains. In 2011, the tax rate on long-term capital gains is scheduled to increase to 20% for most investors, up from the 15% rate it’s been the last several years. If you have stocks or other appreciated assets that you were thinking of selling in the near future, you might want to do so before the year comes to a close. However, it’s generally not a good idea to make investment decisions strictly because of tax consequences. If your appreciated assets are still a part of your overall financial strategy, you may be better off holding them for the long term, even with a higher capital gains rate.

Dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh

Jingle Bells

Over the fields we go, laughing all the way; Bells on bob-tail ring, making spirits bright What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight Chorus ingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

A day or two ago, I thought I’d take a ride

And soon Miss Fanny Bright, was seated by my side; The horse was lean and lank, misfortune seemed his lot; He got into a drifted bank and we got upsot (Chorus)

Now the ground is white, go it while you’re young

Take the girls tonight, and sing this sleighing song; Just get a bob-tailed bay, two-forty as his speed Hitch him to an open sleigh and crack! you’ll take the lead (Chorus)

Silent night, holy night,

Silent Night

All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace. Sleep in heavenly peace.

ilent night, holy night, Shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing alleluia; Christ the Savior, is born! Christ the Savior, is born!

Silent night, holy night,

Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth. Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

Sports West Virginia talks up Holt’s Sump signing MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University gymnastics coach Linda Burdette-Good announced recently that Dayah Haley, Lia Salzano and Maci Sump have signed national letters of intent to compete at WVU next fall. Linda Burdette-Good said she is impressed with the athletes. “Top to bottom, this is one of our most nationally experienced classes,” Burdette-Good said. “They all have competed at the national championships, and it’s nice to bring in a trio of student-athletes with a lot of experience. Each is very strong on three or four events, and we expect them all to have an immediate impact on the team’s success next year.” Sump, a Holt High School senior, is a level 10 gymnast

at Geddars Gymnastics. An elegant athlete with clean lines, Sump, a two-time Junior Olympics national qualifier, has shown tremendous promise as of late. She finished in second place on bars at the 2010 Michigan State Championships, third in the all-around at the regional meet and 19th at the Junior Olympics Championships. Possessing a strong work ethic, the coaches believe Sump has the potential to impact each lineup. Haley, a Pasadena, Md., native, is a level 10 gymnast from Hills Gymnastics. A powerful athlete, she is a two-time Junior Olympics national qualifier and recently finished in third place in the all-around at the 2010 meet. Additionally, she finished third in all-around at the 2010 Maryland State

Championships and first on beam at the 2010 Tim Rand Invitational. The coaches believe that Haley’s work ethic and great attitude should help her immediately push for a lineup spot on several events. A Centerville, Va., native, Salzano, a two-time Junior Olympics national qualifier, is currently a level 10 gymnast at Capital Gymnastics. A consistent competitor, Salzano is known for upgrading her routines’ level of difficulty each season. Competing in the senior ‘A’ division, she finished 29th in the allaround at the 2009 National Championships. Strong in the classroom as well, the coaches believe Salzano will enter collegiate gymnastics with a solid foundation that will aid in her future success.

Over 60 Turkeys donated

Recently Dakota Industries in Holt donated over 60 turkeys to the Holt Food Bank for a Thanksgiving dinner. Tom Brower, owner of Brower Hardware and Food consented to having them stored in his lockers. Pictured is Tom Brower, Denny, Tom, and Caroline Walsh transporting them to the lockers. This past Saturday over 350 families in Holt received a shopping cart full of food so they can cook a Thanksgiving day meal for their families. After a short respite, the Holt Food Bank will start collecting food for Christmas dinners in a few weeks. Shortly every household in Holt will receive a flyer and enclosed envelope requesting funds to buy more food; over 1,000 envelopes were sent out last year by the Holt Lions and over $43,000 was sent in by Holt residents. Anyone wishing to provide funds or manpower should phone (517) 694-9307.
