Driver in Holt school bus crash will retire

A mission to inform

Will Kangas

Holt High School’s SADD (students against destructive decisions) club was on a mission June 10 to inform/remind the community of the penalties of providing alcohol to minors. With high school graduation open houses in full swing, SADD members want to deter adults from purchasing alcohol for use by minors. Seven SADD members and their club advisor went around to four local businesses (Big Ten, Carl’s, Brower’s, Rich’s) and put neon pink stickers on cases of beer that warn about the penalties. The club calls it “Project Sticker Shock.” COURTESY PHOTO

HOLT — The Holt Public Schools driver who was behind the wheel of a bus that crashed into the side of a large garage earlier this month has decided to retire, according to school officials. The incident occurred at the corner of Delhi Street Northeast and Holt Road on June 2. There were no students on the bus. The female driver turned left from Delhi Street Northeast onto Holt Road and appeared to have lost control of the bus, swerving into a yard and

then smashing into a garage, according to police After an internal investigation, Deputy Superintendent Scott Szpara said the conclusion was that the accident was a result of “driver error.” “The driver was at fault,” Szpara said. He said one possible explanation was that her foot slipped. The driver, who was not named, is of retirement age and has decided to do so, Szpara said. There will be no disciplinary action by the district and there was no ticket issued by the Ingham County Sheriff’s Department’s Delhi Division. The crash created a hole

in the garage, and the bus hit a 1953 antique wrecker that was damaged and a utility trailer that police said was a complete loss. The owner of the property, Tim Monroe, said he believed it will cost between $5,000 and $10,000 each to repair the garage and the wrecker. Szpara said any compensation for damages would be handled by the insurance companies of both parties. Szpara said the district used on-board cameras to help determine what happened, but because the driver has retired, any further action would be moot, because of her decision to end active employment.

Tales from third grade: Jet packs are needed F

ather’s Day seems to coincide with the last days of school — could this be a coincidence? Maybe. What is a fact is that as summer begins I will miss the after school report that I get from my son at Wilcox Elementary. What follows are examples of a unique perspective on life as seen through the eyes of a third grader. I felt compelled to write down some of the highlights throughout the

LIFE IN HOLT Will Kangas

year and share them here. Warning: These thoughts and stories from the third grade are true but candid. Names have been changed to protect the innocent. It usually starts like this:

How’d it go at school today? “Well dad, someone has been throwing their hotdog on the floor in the cafeteria. The supervisor warned us that someone better confess or none of us will be able to go to recess. Jacob said he thought about saying it was him just so we could get to go out.”

“Well, he has sharp teeth, he is kind of pale and is allergic to garlic.”

“Some of the kids at school think Michael may be a vampire.” Why is that?

Students submitted various accomplishments they were proud of and put them in a collage on

“Wesley wasn’t at school today so Jeremiah was the one that had to drink down his chocolate milk really fast.” What? Why did he have to do that? “Someone had to be the entertainment.”

the wall outside the classroom. My son’s contribution: “I survived the swine flu.” While sipping on a pop at the year-end school festival, a bee landed on his can and flew away. “You can have this now, dad.” Why? “A bee landed on it and now it tastes like honey.” After school my wife and I treated him to some

pizza, but it was too hot to eat, so my wife grabbed a slice and held it out the window to cool it off. He became worried. “Boy, I bet that slice of pizza is scared right now.” The school parking lot can get crazy sometimes after school, and on this day my son turned the corner at the same time a car was approaching and it stopped short. “See dad, this is why I need a jet pack,” he said without hesitation.

HOLT — An artificial joint components maker has a new majority shareholder and plans to expand globally while adding jobs in Michigan. Orchid Orthopedic Solutions, with 150 employees in Holt and a combined 645 at four other Michigan locations, now lists Sweden’s Altor Equity Partners as its majority shareholder. The shares

were sold by former shareholder Churchill Equity of Minneapolis. Terms weren’t disclosed. Mike Miller, chairman and CEO of Orchid, said Altor wants to help Orchid expand its presence. “We will be taking some of our skilled employees in Michigan and asking them to transplant our capabilities to places in Asia, India and South America,” Miller said. Orchid makes components for replacement hips, knees and other

joints. It also makes the medical instruments surgeons use to implant the devices. Orchid has annual sales of approximately $175 million. As the company expands globally, Miller anticipates that an additional 150 workers will be needed in Michigan. These jobs will include manufacturing, clerical and executive positions, but Miller wasn’t able to estimate an average wage for the positions. “With an aging and increasingly active popula-

tion in the Western markets and increasing public and private health care spending in the developing markets, there is a fundamentally solid long-term demand growth outlook for orthopedic and dental implants,” said Hans Stråberg, future chairman of the board and former CEO of Electrolux. Orchid recently invested $1.5 million into added office space and machining equipment at its Holt location.

Many people suffering from bulimia are able to hide the disorder from others but it is more difficult to keep it a secret from their dentists. Changes inside the mouth of a bulimic can be detected during the course of a routine dental examination. A good experience with dentistry is based on making the right choice in a family dentist. If

you don’t have a dentist at this time, at HOLT FAMILY DENTISTRY we’re currently accepting new patients. Please call 517.694.2501 to schedule an appointment. We’re located at 2205 N. Cedar Street, Holt.

He was nominated by the faculty and staff of the Holt Central High School and Holt Adult High School for scholastic achievements, community involvement and service. Pratt-Taylor was a member of the Holt High School Varsity Basketball team this past season. The award was presented at the commencement ceremony on June 3 by Irma and Frank Moss, members of the Kiwanis Club of Okemos. Members of Kristopher’s family attending the graduation were his mother and two younger brothers. This commencement was attended by the Holt Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Johnny A. Scott and other executives of the district along with the Holt Public Schools Board of Education. Several of those present gave the graduates the

continues to gain momentum, we, as concerned citizens, may have reached a new hurdle with the Township – providing for and protecting our First Amendment rights. To get signatures, I attended the Lions Community Kids Day at Valhalla Park, this past Saturday. Almost immediately, we were approached by an event worker who advised us to leave. I asked to speak with a deputy who approached with a township representive. The rep insisted we leave. I asked the deputy to advise us under which ordinance we were being asked to leave the premises, he did not cite any ordinance. Under the threat of being ticketed or arrested, we decided to leave the park peacefully. I asked the deputy to file a formal report but was denied. Was this democracy in action or was the township representative’s response because we were going against his opinion for the project? Why is the rep denying my voice? Why was I threatened? Is there something in the Sludge ProjNancy Dayton ect that the representative does not want exposed to the public? I hope my experience energizes you to get more involved Civil liberties were denied in our township, engages you to challenge As the Signature Petition Referendum our elected officials, and encourages you crusade (to bring to vote the Delhi Town- to sign the petition. Your actions now will ship Board of Trustees’ decision to fund enable positive growth for the future. the $5.5 Million taxpayer Sludge Project) Mark Farone

I am writing in regards to the Solar Sludge project that Delhi Township board is seriously considering at a cost to the residents of Delhi. Considering the economic situations of so many people in Delhi Township, this is truly not the appropriate time to be considering this project. Yes, it sounds like a great deal but when times are tough you don’t purchase something just because it’s a good deal. In a family situation you wouldn’t buy something you can’t afford and don’t need right now without at least getting approval from the rest of the people that are helping to pay for it…but this is exactly what the Delhi Board wants to do. I say let’s get this on a ballot and let the Delhi residents, aka family, decide if this is what they want to spend their money on or if the “family” would rather save money all the way around and vote not to have it at all. Let the people (residents of Delhi) decide how their money will be spent.

DIMONDALE — As “Mac” McKenzie and his family planted flowers on his wife, Catherine’s, grave in the Dimondale Cemetery just before Memorial Day, a red van pulled up and the woman had tears in her eyes as she thanked MacKenzie for placing a U.S. flag on her father’s grave. She explained that her father was a Vietnam veteran and having the flag on her father’s grave meant so much to her. Marine Corp veteran McKenzie seemed surprised by the woman’s reaction. He just couldn’t imagine the veterans not having flags designating that they had served their country near their final resting places. “There is a story behind every headstone in the cemetery,” McKenzie said. It was about a year ago, McKenzie, who visited his wife’s grave regularly, noticed that some of the flags at the graves in the cemetery were in disrepair. He immediately purchased a “gross” of flags to start replacing the tattered ones. Before placing flags on the graves, he spends time hot gluing them so that they will last longer. McKenzie, who is modest about the impact of the project, said, “It keeps me out of trouble.” McKenzie won’t have time to get into trouble, he is not only placing flags at

‘Mac’ Mckenzie made sure veteran gravestones had flags. COURTESY PHOTO the Dimondale Cemetery but he is taking on the three other cemeteries owned by Windsor Township. American Legion Post 12 offered to purchase the flags. The Windsor Township Cemetery is special, according to McKenzie. First, he appreciates that they allow flags to be on the graves all year long. He also gives credit to Sexton Bill Long and the staff, Kirk Schalau and Jim Bogi for keeping the “best kept” cemetery in the area. “People take pride in this cemetery, you can tell,” McKenzie said. Along with McKenzie’s flag project, long-time Dimondale resident Pat House and members of the Home Culture Club annually plant flowers at the Veteran’s Memorial so the cemetery is always ready for the annual Memorial Day recognition.
