Five eighth graders to attend LCC federal mini-grant

HOLT — When Holt eighth-grader Hien Lee started her education at Holt Public Schools in seventh grade, she couldn’t speak English. The Vietnamese-born Lee, now a year later, was one of five students who will get an opportunity to attend Lansing Community College for two years on a full scholarship after graduating from Holt High School. The students were announced and signed their letters of intent to graduate from Holt at a special awards ceremony at Holt Junior High on March 28. They are the first class of students that have been given this opportunity thanks to a new H.O.L.T. Scholarship program, “Help Others Learn Together.” “We were called into the office about three weeks ago,” scholarship recipient Josh Golden said. “Some of us were so excited we cried.” Golden wants to study to possibly be a pediatric doctor. “But college is also for finding out about other things so I may change my mind.” Golden and Lee were joined at a table with fellow recipients Makayla Kost, Daisa Clemons and Danny Martinez.

Martinez said he would like to be in the NFL someday, but just in case he wants to study engineering. The program was established to provide education scholarships to talented students who are “at-risk” of failing to get a college education because economic, cultural or physical circumstances. “Some of us were so excited we cried.” – Josh Golden, scholarship recipient was launched in 2009. Upon hearing about similar programs like those in Kalamazoo, Delhi Township Supervisor Stuart Goodrich wanted to have a similar program in Holt. And so private donations and some other corporate donations, like national company Xerox, made contributions.

Each scholarship, or two years at LCC, was valued up to $5,000 for each student. “As much as it was a special moment to give this gift to deserving students today we need to continue to work with the community for donations,” Holt Public School Superintendent Johnny Scott said.

HOLT — Horizon Elementary has been awarded one of only 25 national grants to help expand its “walking school bus” program. The National Center for Safe Routes to School has announced the selection of 25 recipients who have been awarded $1,000 mini-grants for projects designed to encourage safe walking and bicycling to and from school. “We are going to roll out the program when the weather changes,” Horizon Elementary Principal David Hornak said. The program is called a “walking school bus” because students can be dropped off at designated walking locations where they walk with an adult to school. “We continue to be impressed by the innovation and creativity of the mini-grant applications we receive,” said Lauren Marchetti, director of the National Center for Safe Routes to School. “Communities nationwide are tailoring walking and bicycling to school programs to address their unique needs, and that customization and attention to detail is what will sustain these efforts to improve safety and promote an ac-

Competition for the grant was very heavy, with over 300 applicants nationwide. Tribal governments to improve the health and wellbeing of children by enabling and encouraging them to walk and bicycle to and from school. Selected proposals distinguished themselves through their commitment and creative approaches to improve safety and increase walking and bicycling to and from school. Holt’s Horizon was the only winner from Michigan. The school will expand its existing walking school bus program by adding new drop-off sites and signage. Additionally, bicycle locks will be available for students on loan. This security measure will complement an existing program that provides bicycles and helmets to students who actively participate in the school’s walking and bicycling activities. Other winning ideas include California’s McKinley Elementary School’s paved walkway and safety fence coordinated by the Bonita Neighborhood Association with matching funding from other sources. The paved walkway will

enable students and members of the neighborhood to use the pathway year-round, and the safety fence will separate students from a nearby freeway ramp. In Colorado, Columbine Elementary will expand its Bike Club safety activities by providing club members with bicycle helmets and new educational materials as part of its goal for students to ride safely 100 percent of the time. A new bicycle rack also will help alleviate a bicycle parking problem that has resulted from increased popularity of bicycling to school.

DIMONDALE — Usually closed on Sundays, Mike’s Village Restaurant on March 27 was bustling with community members who filled their plates to help raise funds for the Dimondale Food and Personal Needs Pantries. More than $1,600 was raised at the Full Plate Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser sponsored by the Dimondale Community Development Committee and Mike’s Village restaurant. Celebrity servers Dimondale Elementary School Principal James Cooper, WKAR Radio Personality Scott Pohl, Holt Varsity Football Coach Al Slamer and WLNS Meteorologist Jake Dunne waited on the guests at the second annual fundraiser. In 2010, the Pantries, sponsored by the Dimondale First Presbyterian and United Methodist churches, provided food for 10,542 meals. That total included 45 community families comprised of 120 individuals. The Pantries spend about $4,000 on food annually. “When others are in need, we are there to help,” Lori Conarton said. “When we are in need, others are there to help. That is what makes us a community.” Conarton is one of the sponsors of the event.

Down Syndrome kids kick up their heels at Zap Zone By MARY JO WHITE

DELTA TWP. - About 50 members of the Capital Area Down Syndrome Association escaped a cold, rainy day recently to have fun at the Zap Zone in Delta Township. They had come from all over the tri-county area on March 21 to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, the date chosen because those with the syndrome have an extra 21st chromosome. Zap Zone manager Craig Goschke said he was glad to host the group, adding that the business also donates

quite a bit to silent auction fundraisers. There were games of glow-in-the-dark golf and laser tag, bumper car rides and lots of pizza and cake. And it was hard to tell who was having the most fun: the kids or the parents watching them. “It gives families something different to do, a fun, free day sponsored by CADSA,” said Carrie Moore of Mason, the group’s president. Six-year-old Lily Huckleberry of DeWitt , her shiny strawberry blond hair cas-

cading over the side of her face, was fascinated by the stuffed animals in the “BuildYour-Own-Bear” room. Caleb Day and Willie Jenks, both 11-year-olds from Holt, couldn’t get enough of smashing into each other in the bumper cars. Holt resident Kim Sharpe, an Eaton ISD occupational therapist, spent time watching the bumper cars with one of her students too young for a ride, 3-year-old Brady Tomlin of Eaton Rapids. Brady’s mom, Dawn, a medical social worker at

the Eaton County Medical Care facility, is CADSA’s new member coordinator and the main organizer of the event. “We wanted a family event that would promote awareness of Down Syndrome and celebrate our families,” Tomlin said. She said it was the group’s first time at Zap Zone and it turned out to be a very enjoyable experience. Zap Zone often participates in fundraisers, according to manager Craig Goschke, and was happy to host CADSA and provide the

group a discount. By the end of the afternoon, 3-year-old Owen Kribs of Haslett couldn’t keep his eyes open. Luckily his mom, Wendi, had just the shoulder to nap on. CADSA’s largest fundraiser of the year is an event at the Potter Park Zoo scheduled this year for September 18. It will include a walk through the zoo, a moonwalk and other fun activities, as well as a silent auction and a raffle. For more information, log on to

Holt beats Saline in Lacrosse A chill was in the air, but the Rams Lacrosse Team was red-hot, winning its home opener 15-2 on a sunny, but frigid day at Troost Field on March 26. After losing their season opener at Detroit Catholic Central, the Rams regrouped with a energized offense and solid defense to completely control Saline. The win brings Holt to 1-1 on the season.
