Waste to fuel plan faces critical test

Seconds from a championship

Delhi’s plan ‘green’ on many fronts By WILL KANGAS |

DELHI TWP. — Township trustees will decide the fate of a major project to convert human waste to a fuel that can be burned to generate power at their meeting March 15. “This will be a ‘make or break’ vote,” said Sandra Diorka, Delhi Township Director of Public Services. The board was presented with a full report on the project at its March 1 meeting, as well as a recommendation for the most costeffective way to make the project work. The project involves a final treatment of township waste water into usable fuel, using a de-watering mechanism and a sludge drying process similar to what is being used in

Europe. “Other areas of the world are being told this is the way to go and this is our opportunity,” Township Supervisor Stuart Goodrich said. Goodrich said the project would be the final step in a master plan for the department of public works. Two years ago the department finished its bio-digester project that has been lauded by environmental agencies and led to statewide awards. Goodrich said the sludge drying project was always meant to be the final stage of making the treatment plant a complete circle of renewable energy. It was unknown when the circle was going to be complete, but suddenly “green” stimulus money became available to the tune of $2.5 million. “This is taking advantage of an opporSee

The tournament was held from March 3-5.

HOLT — Organizers of a community Town Hall meeting focused on underage drinking want to inform and educate, without preaching, or reliving a recent tragedy. “We are not going to focus on the accident,” meeting co-chair Angela Stepter said. “We are not going to re-live what happened.” What happened was a tragic accident on Jan. 30

that took the lives of three Holt teens and injured another. The town hall meeting will be the first major production from a community task force formed after the accident. The meeting will be at Holt High School’s Margaret Livensparger Theater at 7 p.m. Stepter said she wants parents and students to attend because it will be an opportunity to inform the

public about underage drinking. “It doesn’t just happen in Holt,” Stepter said. “It happens everywhere, and its time to have a conversation.” A collection of experts who have wanted to help the community will be speaking at the meeting. • Dr. Hilton Thomas, Director of Professional Psychological & Rehabilitation See Meeting/page 6

tunity,” Goodrich said. “We believe this money won’t be available in the future.” Trustee Derek Bajema said the reason the money has become available is because others have turned it down. “Another community said ‘no thanks’ to the DEQ dollars which bumped us up to be eligible this year,” Bajema said. “I believe this demonstrates that most government entities realize that the people they represent want them to be fiscally responsible.” But Diorka says the project will save money and generate funds to offset operating and maintenance costs for the de-watering machine — which looks like a small rocket — and the two 400-foot greenhouses that will use solar power to dry the sludge. She said as far as operating costs, the sludge drying process would be $20,000 less than hauling it away. “This doesn’t include the income from selling the product,” she said. “This could range from $12,000 to $18,000 per year.” While some communities like Eaton Rapids Michigan State University have shown interest in the product, MSU’s decision is on hold, because the university is currently applying to amend its air per-

Q: Of the $2,580,000

in money that doesn’t have to be paid by the Township offered by the state, how many other communities were offered principal forgiveness this year? A: Nine additional communities were offered principal forgiveness from a total of 13 projects. The total amount of “Green” money available from the state is $13 million, and Delhi’s share would be 20 percent of it.

mit to allow for the burning of the product for fuel. MSU can’t commit to being a customer as of yet because of the permit process, Diorka said. The total project cost is $5 million, which would be paid for through a low-interest state revolving fund loan. Half of the cost would come back through stimulus money, and the township would look for other grant money. The cost to township residents would be a $1.20 flat fee per month on the sewer bill.

Public hearing will discuss trail connection

DELHI TWP. — Opposition to the township’s plans to hook up its trail system to Lansing’s has been circulating fliers in the township. Similar to what happened before township voters approved a police and emergency services millage in November last year, the fliers have been appearing in newspaper tubes and around mailboxes in the west side of the township. The Delhi Township Board of Trustees will be holding a public hearing on March 15 concerning a grant application by the township to the state to help fund its “north connector” trail. For years, the township has been planning and constructing a path that connects to the Lansing River Trail to the north and Hay-

hoe Trail to the south, when funds have been available. The first portions of the trail were completed in recent years, from Holt Road to Willoughby Road and along Cedar Street between Dallas and Holbrook Drive. The township is now pursuing construction of what is being called the “North Trail Connector.” That pathway will continue the trail, which ends at Willoughby Road, and extend it to the Lansing River Trail at the corner of Jolly and Aurelius Roads. The Lansing River Trail connects to Hawk Island Park, Potter Park Zoo, downtown Lansing, Old Town and through the MSU campus. The flier has the Delhi Charter Township logo on it and asks if residents want their money spent on a trail,

but it doesn’t identify who or what organization is distributing it. Township Supervisor Stuart Goodrich said he expects some residents to attend the public hearing, but doesn’t know how many will be there to oppose it versus praise it. “We’ve been told through residents and in surveys that a trail is needed,” he said. “One resident said he can’t wait to be able to ride his bike all the way to work.” The township has applied for a grant that would pay for $1 million of the $2.6 million cost of the trail project. It will also likely apply for another $500,000 grant to pay for more of it, according to Community Development Director Tracy Miller. The rest of the cost would be paid for by the Delhi Downtown Development Authority.

yearly scholarships are given on an as need basis but GPA and community service plays an important role in the selection. Jean Lodge, president of the Rotary said “this is a highly community supported event that affords educational aspiration assistance to our graduating seniors.” The huge success was attributed to the Texas Road House staff and owner Scott Anglebrandt. process. To achieve optimum success, the dispensing professional must tailor the process to meet the needs, abilities, and desires of the patient. If you are wondering if your hearing aids, or those of your loved ones, are meeting their current needs, please call Accuquest Hearing Center at

Now how many have said their hearing aids make some sounds too loud, don’t work well in noise, or they can’t tell if they are really helping them hear at all? Audiologists and dispensers try to make hearing aids function the best they can to give the patient a good outcome. But there were always a lot of difficulties surrounding comfort and understanding of speech. Let’s say you have a small child, an average sized wo woman, and a very large man, all with the same hearing loss. All hearing Julie Pabst aids would be Audiologist programmed the same way, according to the hearing aid manufacturers software. But the ear canals themselves must figure into the process, as well. Without diving into too much physics, ear canal size and shape for the child would be quite small. The woman would be close to the average size ear canals and the man’s ear canals would be quite large and long. The child would receive too much power from the hearing aids, the woman’s fitting would be close, and the man’s hearing aids would seem very quiet. All hearing aid manufacturers base their science off the average ear. But no one has the average ear. Live speech mapping is the latest innovative approach to hearing aid fitting which uses natural speech to show how effective digital hearing THEIR HEARING AIDS?

aids are in helping you to hear speech. With digital speech mapping, an actual speech signal, not tones or hissing sounds, is used to test the hearing aids while inserted in the patient’s ears. This allows for the shape and size of the patient’s ear canals to be included in the fitting process, as well as using the most important signal we hear, speech. For hearing aid fittings to be successful, speech must be appropriately amplified with respect to loudness, clarity, and comfort. Soft speech should be perceived as soft, moderate speech sounds should be perceived as moderate, and loud speech sounds should not reach the patient’s discomfort level. Speech mapping helps to provide a clear “visual” sense of the hearing loss, and the benefits or perhaps the limitations that your current hearing aids offer in relation to actual speech. While wearing hearing aids, a tiny probe microphone is inserted into the ear canal while the hearing aids are running, then a stimulus (voices/ music) is used to measure the output and shows if the hearing aids are amplifying sounds appropriately. The Live Speech Map is displayed on a monitor through easily-understood graphics so that you can actually see sounds that are missing and be presented with a clear visual sense of hearing loss and aided benefits relating to actual speech. It allows you to see graphically just how the aid is performing in a live, real world environment. Once we see what sounds you’re missing, we’ll be able to tune your personal hearing aids until it restores the missing speech patterns and tones. So, not only will you hear the difference a hearing aid makes with your speech, you’ll be able to see the sounds being restored visually as well. A successful hearing aid fitting should be a dynamic, patient-centered

MASON — It’s never easy as a coach to see your seniors play their final high school game. What makes it even more difficult for Doug Harkema and the Holt Rams, is that their three seniors were all exceptional players. Those three seniors put together another memorable

effort as they won another district title, but unfortunately the Holt Rams saw their state title hopes come to an end with a 52-42 loss to Niles in a Class A regional semifinal at Mason High. Senior guard Robyn Robinson scored a team-high 14 points and Emily Klauka had 12 points and six rebounds for the Rams, who finished their season with 15-8 record.

“I’m extremely proud of this team, win or lose,” Holt coach Doug Harkema said. “This was a game of makes and misses, and in the end, they just made more shots down the stretch than we did.” Despite getting down early on, the Rams stayed within striking distance throughout this game and were able to cut the deficit to just three points early on in the fourth quarter.

Ram powerlifters win title

It may not be the prettiest sport to watch, but for the Holt Ram Powerlifting Team, this was something that they will remember for a while. The Rams captured their first ever powerlifting Regional Championship on Feb. 26 at Shepherd High School. On their way to the memorable victory, Al Slamer’s crew edged out defending state champ, Lake Orion, by two team points. Leading the way for the Rams was Mike Bologna (114 pounds), Devin Salyer (123) and Wes Dorin (170), who all took home firstplace honors in their respected weight class. Second place finishers included: C.J. Waits, Kenny Rogers and Kari Leger. Mike Smith rounded out the top finishers with a third-place finish at 242 pounds.

On the girls side, Erichka Culp and Katina Leger placed first, while Gabrielle Sampi placed second and Khiara Duke took third.

All of these athletes qualified for the State Championship meet, which will be held on March 18-19 in Fenton.

game-high 21 points and Nichole Sly added 16 points and four assists for the Vikings (18-6). Niles held Holt leading scorer Mandy Johnson to just six points in the final game of her brilliant career. “She is one of our seniors who gave everything she had to this team,” Harkema said. “I’m extremely proud of this group and what they were able to accomplish here at Holt.”

But Niles went on a 7-0 run with just under six minutes to go, which proved to be too much for the Rams to overcome. “When you’re playing from behind the whole game and then cutting it to one or two points, you’re just waiting for that one big play that’s going to put you ahead,” Harkema said. “Unfortunately for us, that one big play just didn’t happen.” Maureen Craig scored a
