Alt. ed. was good idea for struggling student By WILL KANGAS

HOLT — As a young teen, Frank Schmidt felt like he just didn’t fit in at Holt High School. “I had some discipline problems and other things going on,” he said. It felt like the teachers there thought of the school as some kind of Ivy League school.” His grades suffered, and he began losing interest in school despite his love of football.

So Schmidt transferred to Holt Central High School, the district’s alternative high school for his sophomore year, after being recommended for it. Ninth Grade Campus Principal Nick Johnson, who had known Schmidt for a long time, recommended the switch as well. “He was going through some tough times,” Johnson said. “Each student is different, but I thought it would be a great change for him.” The switch resulted in

better grades and a better outlook on life, Schmidt said, as he was able to continue his education and play football for the Rams. “The teachers at Holt Central just seemed to care more,” Schmidt said. “Along with the other students, we all seemed to be a family.” It also led to him helping out the Rams as they made a deep playoff run in the fall. Fed by the success he was feeling in his new

HOLT — A third death as a result of injuries from a Jan. 31 crash on Hagadorn Road will no doubt bring another charge against the driver in what has been called a “tragic accident” by school officials. Anthony Harris, a senior at Holt High School, died about 9 p.m. Feb. 2 at Sparrow Hospital, hospital officials said on Feb. 3. Harris was a passenger in a car that crashed into a tree off of Hagadorn Road near Bennett Road. Killed in the crash were Holly Bossenbery, 17, and Taylyr Cochran, 18, of Holt. Bossenbery, whose father lives in Lansing, was a Holt High School senior, officials said. Cochran graduated last year and

was attending Lansing Community College. Kenzie Schaffer, a Holt senior, was also in the car but was released from the hospital on Feb. 1. Driver Brett Johnson, of Dimondale, was charged with two counts of drunken driving causing death and one count of drunken driving causing serious injury in connection with the crash. He could face up to 30 years in prison on the drunken driving causing death counts. Hundreds turned out for a vigil that was held at the Holt-Delhi Library on Feb. 1 and counselors helped students at school deal with the trajedy. — From LSJ reports.

DELHI TWP. — A blizzard couldn’t stop three determined television reporters from getting the scoop on Delhi Township’s wooly employees. Three Japanese reporters from TV Tokyo came to Delhi Township on Feb. 2 to meet the township’s sheep. The sheep were brought in a couple years ago to eat grass and help cut mowing costs for the township’s public works property on McCue Road. The TV Tokyo crew were on the final chapter of a three-part story about American governments trying to save money in hard economic times.

“They drove all the way up here in a blizzard from Columbus,” Delhi Township Department of Public Works Director Sandra Diorka said. “They found out about the sheep through the Internet.” She said producer Kanako Ota and companions interviewed her and filmed the sheep on location for a couple hours at the plant before leaving to try and catch a plane back to their bureau in Washington, D.C. “When they first called, I thought maybe it was an international student from Michigan State University,” Diorka said. But it turned out to be reporters from See

classroom, Schmidt said he worked harder on his football skills and earned a regular playing spot by the fourth game last season. It led to a rare distinction. Schmidt became the first alternative education student in the state to be in the starting rotation of a Division 1 high school, according to his dad Robert, who consulted with the Michigan High School Athletic Association. Holt Rams Head Coach Al Slamer said Schmidt was a very important part of the team, and rose up during the Rams final playoff game against Howell. “If you watch the film, Frank single-handedly kept us in the game,” Slamer said. Schmidt’s mom Teresa said she was thankful staff members stepped up to help her son, who she said

just needed someone at the school to be a positive influence. Meanwhile, she and other parents as well as staff at Holt Central are fretting about a possible change in the way students are taught. Superintendent Dr. Johnny Scott recently announced that there will be a special meeting concerning alternative education with the Holt Public School’s Board of Education on Feb. 10 in the boardroom at 7 p.m. at the Ninth Grade Campus building. “This will be strictly an informational meeting,” Scott said. “We will present some options and discuss them, and the meeting will be open to the public.” Current and former alternative education students addressed the school board at its last regular meeting in January during the public comment section. They told the board

Schmidt is the only alternative education student in the state to start for a division 1 school, according to the MHSAA. that it would be a mistake to switch to a new online-heavy based curriculum. The board did not respond at the time, saying that no recommendations had been made as of yet. “I know what helped me was having a connection with the teachers and other students at Holt Central,”

Schmidt said. “I don’t like the idea of being strictly online with classes.” Schmidt was recently hired for an internship with the Board of Water & Light and given a scholarship to study at LCC. Schmidt was selected from over 200 applicants for the position as a Water Production Helper.

Commissioner praises handling of snow storm By WILL KANGAS

DELHI TWP. — More a foot of snow was dumped on Holt and Mid-Michigan overnight on Feb. 1, but Ingham County road commission and county officials say hazardous road conditions were kept to a minimum thanks to preparation. Traffic on local roads was reduced due in part to early school closing notifications and the closing of some businesses. Holt Public Schools was closed Feb.2 and 3, and the Delhi Township offices were closed on Feb. 2. On top of that, snow plow crews made road conditions in the morning drivable, according to Ingham County Commissioner Steve Dougan. “I felt compelled to come to the Ingham County Road Commission office and congratulate them on a job well done,” Dougan said. Ingham County Road Commission Di-

rector Bill Conklin said he had 45 trucks on the road running for 14 hours straight. “We pulled some people who don’t normally drive trucks for the commission and put them in one as well,” Conklin said. The result was passable main roads, Dougan said. “I couldn’t believe how easy it was to drive,” Dougan said. “I was fearing the worst.” Conklin said it is a matter of logistics. The county is divided up, and every driver gets about 20 miles, he said. The primary roads that run north and south get the top priority, he said. “That’s because most of our commuting runs north and south,” Conklin said. Next is the primary east-west roads followed by secondary roads and then subdivisions. He said the trucks didn’t go into the subdivisions until Feb. 3. “The commission answered the call and impressed me,” Dougan said. “The township should be proud.”

one of Japan’s largest television stations. “There was a bit of a language barrier but we had a great time,” Diorka said. Delhi Trustee John Hayhoe was there and said it was a fun cultural exchange. “Kanako asked about the sheep and why we need a llama to protect them from coyotes,” Hayhoe said. “We also explained that the llama needed a companion because it can get lonely.” Kanako and the crew were given hats and gloves made from the wool of the sheep as a parting gift. “We were told to have gifts because it is a Japanese custom,” Diorka said. “It’s fun to think this will be on national television in Japan.” No date has been set for when the report will be televised, but a producer from the Washington D.C. bureau said a copy will be sent to the township after it airs. He said the only way a person in America could see it live is if they somehow have TV Tokyo through satellite broadcast.

Rams girls aggressive in hoop win over Okemos

HOLT — Mandy Johnson rattled off basket after basket, which allowed Holt to jump out to an early first quarter lead. The rest of the Rams picked up her aggressive approach in the second quarter and the rout was on from there. Johnson scored a gamehigh 21 points and Emily Klauka added 11 points and five rebounds to lead Holt to a 54-33 win over Okemos in a CAAC Blue matchup on Jan. 28 at Holt High. “Whenever you play that good and win like that, it’s fun,” Johnson said. “We came out really focused at the start of the game and just played great, especially in that first half.”

Johnson scored eight of her 21 points in the first quarter as she helped Holt take an early 19-3 lead. Okemos slowly chipped away at the lead, but senior center Hannah Hoffman picked up her third foul with four minutes remaining in the second quarter and was forced to sit for the rest of the half. The Chieftains we’re able to cut the deficit to 15 late in the third quarter, but that is the closest the score would get all night. Despite being in foul trouble for the majority of the game, Hoffman finished with 14 points and seven rebounds for Okemos (7-5, 3-2). “We know that she is a great player, so we just really focused on her and tried to stop her from getting

easy shots,” Johnson said of Hoffman. “When we played them last year, she did good and they held us to only five points in the first half. This time, it was completely different.” As good as Holt was on the offensive end, they were equally as good on defense. The Rams (8-4, 4-1) held Okemos to just 31 percent shooting from the field, while forcing 18 turnovers in the victory. “I just really put it on my guards, telling them in practice yesterday that if we can create the tempo of this game, then we will win,” Holt coach Doug Harkema said. “We’ve been good on one side of the ball a lot this year, but tonight we played a complete game.

Holt cosmo student takes third MASON — Students from the Capital Area Career Center’s Cosmetology program recently participated in an up-style hair competition. Students were divided

by junior and senior status and prizes were awarded for first through third place at each grade level. Students were given two hours and were judged on their degree of difficulty,

the style’s wear ability and their creativity. Junior level students participated in a creative up-style hair competition and senior level students were required to complete a replication hair up-style. This annual competition is judged by the program’s Advisory Board which consists of instructors and salon owners from around the area. In the junior class, Samantha Andring of Mason, took first place; Lindsay Hunt, also of Mason, took second and Kaitlyn Pier of Holt, took third. “Our students work incredibly hard in preparing for competitions such as this, and it shows in their final creation,” said Trisha Wilson, instructor of cosmetology at the Capital Courtesy photo Area Career Center. “This is just one of sevPictured is the junior class of the cosmetology program (l. to r.): Lindsay Hunt of Mason, Samantha eral competitions they will compete in throughout the
