Local family marvels at Korean legacy By MARY JO WHITE mjwhite@lsj.com

EATON RAPIDS - Local attorney Bob Warner, 76, really only remembers his grandfather near the end of his life when he suffered from dementia, petting the family dog during get togethers and calling it a “nice cow.” Imagine his shock, then, when he learned the details of Robert Alex Hardie’s 45 -year career in Korea, first as a medical doctor, then as a Methodist missionary. Today the church he helped start, Chongyko Methodist in Seoul, one of the largest Methodist churches in the world, has a congregation of 10,000 that esteems Hardie as a pioneer. “I had no idea what my grandfather was or what he did,” Warner said. “It’s like discovering a treasure in your attic.”

Tuesday’s primary will shape Nov. ballot By ALAN MILLER alanmiller@lsj.com

CHARLOTTE — On Tuesday, voters will find it a little more interesting to be a Republican than a Democrat, if they consider making ballot choices to be interesting. In Eaton County, Republicans will have to choose from five candidates wanting to replace Jennifer Granholm as governor, three who want to be sent to congress in place of Mark Schauer, two who want to succeed Patty Birkholz as state senator, four who would like replace term-limited Rick Jones as state representative, two who seek the 65th District state representative seat, two who want to challenge Jeanne Pearl-Wright for a seat on the county commission and two who would like to take over Roger Harris’ commission seat. By comparison, Demo-

Learning about his work His first clue was a phone call from a young Korean student studying in Kentucky, seeking information on Hardie because he was the subject of his dissertation. When the man came to Michigan to visit, he was astounded by the simple flat stone that marks Hardie’s grave in Lansing’s Deepdale Cemetery. Such a great man, he reasoned, should have a much more elaborate monument. But that wasn’t Hardie’s way. “My grandfather had turned his back on the riches that most people are driven by,” Warner said after learning the whole Hardie story. Earlier this year, Warner, his wife, Jean, 77, and several other family members spent 10 days in South Korea at the invitation of Chongyko Church, which was celebrating its 110th anniversary. They learned the details of Hardie’s accomplishments and marveled at the impact his legacy has left on a country about which he had no knowledge when he made the decision to move there in 1890 after being inspired by a YMCA presentation in Toronto. Hardie, his pregnant wife, Matilda, and their 2-year-old daughter, Eva, embarked on the threemonth journey to Korea soon after he finished medical school. Their second child, Bessie, was born shortly after they arrived.

The Hardies would go on to have seven children in all, including Warner’s mother, Grace, born in Toronto during a Canadian furlough. Two young daughters, Margaret Joy and Marie, died in Korea and are buried there. The couple also raised two Korean children. over 60 religious books. Hardie also started Korea’s flourishing apple industry with apple seedlings sent by his brother, a Toronto dentist, according to research done by Dorothy Warner Trebilcock, Bob’s sister. Perhaps the incident that best summarizes Hardie’s character was his realization that he needed to change personally in order to draw more people to Christianity. “He found he might be a touch arrogant,” Jean said. “He had to lose face.” So Hardie, in tears, apologized for his shortcomings, including racism, during a one-week study with fellow missionaries that would eventually be known as part of the Revival of 1903.

Inspiring change That confession changed the course of Methodist evangelization in Korea, Jean says, because others were inspired to con-

fess, too, following Hardie’s example. “The reaction was amazing,” she said. “It spread like wildfire.” Bob was astounded at the reception his family got at Chongyko Church, with TV cameras whirring as he received a certificate honoring Hardie. His grandfather was commemorated on a Korean stamp, too, and his photo was prominent on programs and banners. Maybe the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. With the humility characteristic of Hardie in his later years, Bob said, shaking his head, that “people came up to get my autograph and I had as much to do with it as my cat.” Other family members who traveled on the historic trip to Korea were the Warners’ daughters, Patsy Baker of Eaton Rapids, Carole Bonfirm of Portland Ore. and Meg Higham of Liverpool, England, as well as Patsy’s children, Robert, 16, and Bailey, 13; Meg’s husband Steve and niece Amy Trebilcock and her husband Jim Frost from Scottville, Mich.

This year I was privileged to travel to Guatemala as a member of Eaton Rapids High School’s Interact club. Interact is the youth branch of Rotary dedicated to helping its community and improving communities around the world. Every year Interact travels to a foreign community to provide assistance and improve the welfare of the people living there. This year I, along with eight other students, went to the city of Xela in Guatemala Guest to procolumn vide our By Tessa Betz services. Before our trip we collected school supplies, toiletries, and toys for the orphans we would be visiting. Everyone in Interact helped with the collection and packing of our supplies. All of our checked luggage and suitcases were used solely to carry supplies for the children we were visiting. Our trip began on July 5. We spent 10 days in Guatemala; of those

10 days four were dedicated to helping the orphans we had packed for. Most of our time was spent at an orphanage called Xela Temporal. Our first day there was spent handing out the many gifts we had packed for the children and giving them some much deserved playtime. The faces of the children lit up upon our arrival. We spent the whole day playing games with them. Duck, duck, goose, and soccer were among their favorites. Aside from playtime we were able to help the children with their math skills and even a little vocabulary. The following days that we spent at Xela Temporal were spent painting. We were able to paint four large rooms in the orphanage, which included the kitchen, dining room, laundry room, and babies’ room. The kids really enjoyed the bright peach and yellow of the paint we used to revive the dirty walls. They took great pleasure in helping us with our work by doing some painting of their very own. One little boy named Evan always had a paintbrush in hand and took great pleasure in being helpful. His eyes were always brightest when we congratulated him on a job

well done and appreciated his work. Our presence there, even when occupied by our work gave the children a sense of love. They could tell that we cared for them by the preciseness of our work and our joy when they came to visit us. During our last day of work at the orphanage we went out and bought some paint of our own. We bought the brightest blue, yellow, pink, and purple we could find. As we finished our last coat of paint in the dining room we invited all the kids to join us. We dipped all of our hands in first and then the kids followed. Bright blues and purples covered the walls. The kids were overjoyed as they left their handprints near ours on the wall. The opportunity to bond with the children in Xela and bring them happiness is something I would never trade. Words cannot express the impact those children had on my life and the lives of my peers. I will never forget my time in Guatemala and I hope to go back soon. Tessa Betz is a student at Eaton Rapids High School.

New approach aimed at reaching ‘middle’ students I read a fascinating article about middle schools at the same time we began interviewing for a new administrator there. The author, Rick Allen, says that our educational practices for students in grades 5 to 9 are “pivotal” in their academic careers. There are a lot of educational delivery models for adolescents these days. Some of us went to junior high school; now we call it middle school. We have Paw a facility that allows prints us some wonderful Bill DeFrance opportunities for students as well as some flexibility. Eaton Rapids Public Schools has Greyhound Intermediate School (GIS) with students in fourth through sixth grades connected to the middle school where we have our seventh and eighth graders. When we closed Union Street Elementary School, we moved fourth graders to GIS. So, we now have grades 4 to 8 in the building complex, not quite the grades claimed as pivotal by Rick Allen. GIS principal, Beth Marcus, Middle

School Principal, Elizabeth Keusch, and an interview committee have been interviewing candidates for a dean of students. This dean of students will serve students in 4 to 8 grades; we think this is a great way to pay attention to every student. Both staffs use a responsible thinking process (RTP) in their approach to student discipline so we have some focus already. The translation is that we will move from two principals and one assistant principal at the middle school to two building principals (4-6 and 7-8) and a dean of students serving the principals and the students. The phrase “caught in the middle” refers the fact that these students are really caught between elementary and high school education. If you have raised or know “middle schoolers,” you know that this is a very fun but unique age. There are a lot of social and emotional needs as well as academic needs at this age. Research shows that the education turnoff starts in the fourth or fifth grade. Poor academic performance at this age is a strong predictor of who drops out in high school.

We hope this administrative alignment and approach to student behavior starts to knit our staffs so we are more honed in on these middle years. The tricky part of success for these students is really a lot like parenting. We need to have high academic expectations, knowing what is ahead for them in high school and beyond Besides the high academic expectations, we also need to understand students’ developmental needs and their views on equity. Nationally, educators often get accused on spending more time on needs and equity than on academic rigor. I think it is really important to balance

all three. This is the age where equity issues turn to bullying and making fun of height, weight, race, or anything else that makes a student a little different. We have great teachers and counselors. Students have access to a pool for swimming lessons and have the same music and band teachers for their five-year stay. Teachers and staff also work together keeping track of how your child is doing over that time. We are excited about the fall and those wonderful adolescents! Bill DeFrance is the superintendent of Eaton Rapids Public Schools.

College news Central Michigan University The following students have graduated from Central Michigan University: Megan Black, Kelly Laverty, Ashley Lowe and Chad Ruehle, all of Eaton Rapids.

Central Michigan University The following students were named to the Central Michigan University spring semester honors list: Ellen Buell, Cari Carmack, Sharron Dickerson and Rebecca Mergener, all of Eaton Rapids. The honors list includes students who earned 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) and higher grade point averages.
