Turkeys galore ER gives thanks in many ways at middle school By MARY JO WHITE mjwhite@lsj.com

EATON RAPIDS - The last place a turkey would want to be at this time of year is on a school cafeteria food line. At Greyhound Intermediate and Eaton Rapids Middle Schools, though, whimsical turkeys welcome kids in the lunch line and bring middleof-the-day smiles. They’re all part of the annual turkey art contest,

whose prize winners receive a free Thanksgiving dinner for their families. One winner will be from the middle school and one from Greyhound Intermediate. Many of the entries are drawings, some of them very creative. “Save the turkeys; eat a cow!” says one. Another shows a turkey armed with a rifle shouting “Freeze” to a hapless hunter with his See

EATON RAPIDS - There are lots of Eaton Rapids folks of all ages ready to celebrate the true meaning of Thanksgiving, the only big American holiday that calls for no expensive gifts, new clothes, costumes or flashy decorations. The parish council at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, for instance, has been hard at work promoting its second annual free Thanksgiving dinner designed to bring community members together. “If you’re having company and don’t feel like cooking, bring them to St. Peter’s,” said Judy Simpson, who’s in charge of publicity for the event and says there will be enough turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy and pie for about 250 people. Simpson, who spent three days just putting out flyers for the dinner, says parishioners have plucked almost all the feathers off the “giving turkey,” a display at the church in which each feather contains the name of a dish or ingredient needed for the event. Simpson emphasizes that everyone is welcome regardless of their own religious affiliation or lack thereof. Last year the church planned for 250 people, but only 50 showed up. The extra food was taken to the Lansing City Rescue Mission. This year there will be a new addition that will probably increase the crowd: a

Veterans honored

Courtesy photo

On Nov.11 in the South Eaton Cemetery in Eaton Township, a very special tribute was paid to veterans of all wars. The program was put together by Eagle Scout candidate Nathan Dolman of Charlotte. The program honored all veterans but also served to dedicate the new Veteran’s Memorial that Dolman created as a permanent tribute to the 26 veterans in the South Eaton Cemetery, many of whom served in the civil war. Mr. Dolman purchased and erected the monument and memorial garden as part of his Eagle Scout project for Charlotte Troop # 37. He raised over $1,700 to fund the monument and memorial garden. The monument and garden was placed in the South Eaton Cemetery in late October and dedicated in a ceremony on Nov. 11. Over 80 attendees honored our veterans at the ceremony that included the VFW Honor Guard and speakers from the American Legion Post 42, National Guard, Sons of the Civil War Veterans, and Congressman-Elect Tim Walberg. The invocation and closing prayer was issued by Pastor Mangan of Mount Hope Church. Eaton Township extends an invitation to anyone to view the monument and garden at the South Eaton Cemetery located at the intersection of M-50 and Long Hwy. Saturday, Nov. 20, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. For questions, call Brenda Stohr at (517) 663-1144.

and new,” Izzy said. Fellow middle-schooler Nathan Laginess agreed. “Brody didn’t look like I thought it would. It looked like the mall cafeteria. I liked it a lot. And it was fun meeting the students.” While the middle schoolers enjoyed the visit to Brody, they all seemed to agree the best part of the day was the game itself. “I got to sit with all my friends and enjoy a good football game,” said eighth grader Chase Coss, who said he’s been an MSU fan all his life. “We got a little bit rowdy but that’s just part of being at a football game” The Spartans won the Nov. 6 game against Minnesota by a score of 31-8. Chase said he had been to the MSU campus before but hadn’t realized how big it really is. “A lot of things were new to me,” he said. Izzy said being able to visit the MSU campus was especially important to her as she hopes to attend college there. “It’s huge, and I was quite happy to get the chance to see it.” Teacher Tanya Smith said

she thought it was important for all the students to experience a bit of college life “first-hand.” “It was a new experience for many of them,” she said. “Many had never been to a college football game at all.” Both Gooley and Smith thanked Pepsi for its hospitality. “They treated us real well, ” Gooley said. “Our guide was great and gave each kid a Spartan hat with the words ‘Pepsi’ on it.” The Pepsi grant came with more than just the trip Courtesy photo to the Spartan game. EATON RAPIDS - A pack of over 45 Greyhounds became Spartans for the day when students and chaperones from Eaton Rapids Middle School traveled to Michigan State University for a Nov. 6 Spartan home football game. The trip was made possible through a Pepsi Refresh grant secured by Middle School teacher Sara Gooley. She said the grant provided tickets to the game for 45 students and five chaperones. The students who got to go, both seventh and eighth graders, were selected by drawing. Gooley, fellow ERMS teachers Tanya Smith and Sarah Judit, paraprofessional Laurie Whitman and parent Jim Crandall accompanied the students. The group traveled to MSU by bus. “We had a fantastic time,” Gooley said. “It was a great experience for the kids.” She said the group had its own personal tour guide provided by Pepsi, and the day began with breakfast at MSU’s Brody Hall complex. Eighth grader Izzy Wood said the trip was “awesome.” “Brody Hall was so cool

Turkeys: Kids make some art Continued from page 1

arms raised. Other entries, though, are sculptured works of art made of materials most adults would never connect with turkeys. A joint effort by fifth graders Jasmine Johnson and Cheyanne Davis, for instance, uses an old red sock for the turkey’s wattles. Fourth grader Cameron Peters constructed his turkey mostly from colorful autumn leaves. And fourth grader Brooke Gibbs kept to a feather theme. Except many of her turkey’s feathers are bright pink. Food service staff have to be creative folks themselves, figuring out how

to slip some extra spinach into the salad to make it healthier, for instance. The turkey contest was an idea to make the mid-day meal more fun. Who knows? A pink feathered turkey might just spark a conversation between kids who haven’t had the chance to know each other very well - yet. “It was something to get the kids excited about coming to eat lunch,” said food service director Linda Vainner. “It’s amazing how creative they are.” Turkey contests aren’t the only thing up Vainner’s sleeve. It seems there was another contest last December - this one with reindeer.

It seems this dedicated woman, who has no first hour class this year, has already received a lifetime achievement award for her generosity over the years. The top winner was the Cindi Penski’s AP English class, whose members brought in 384 items. Some of the high school items will soon find their way into food baskets put together at Heart and Hands, according to Interact Club advisor Stacey Surato. “I’m proud we got everybody to kick in and work, especially since we started out slow,” said Interact treasurer Ryan Richmond. “We really got the number up as high as those in the past.” Heart and Hands director Roz Bullen, who has seen an October uptick in the num-

ber of people needing assistance, says the giving goes both ways. “It (the food drive) gives the students a good experience helping other people,” she said. Making sure everyone has enough food isn’t just the prerogative of high school students. Middle school kids recently collected almost 1,200 pounds of food as part of this year’s Michigan Harvest Gathering, half the total amount collected, according to ERMS secretary Sue Shaw. The Harvest Gathering effort was coordinated by Leslie Neubecker, the dietician at the Eaton Rapids Medical Center. Second and third graders at Northwestern Elementary also worked hard in that food drive. It seems you’re never too young to give thanks.

In late October, we had three high school teachers take a caravan of students on a college visit. Jamy Marske, Ryan Anderson, and Dori Ike took 33 students up to Central Michigan University (CMU) to introduce them to colPaw lege. These students have had their ups and downs in prints high school. Our students were greet- Bill DeFrance ed by Dr. Hernandez as well as seven CMU students who volunteered their time to put presentations together and walk with our teachers and students throughout the day. Our students found out about financial aid, and admissions, as well as resources available to them in the library.

And they sat in on a classroom lecture by a college professor. They also toured different departments throughout the day to find out more about majors and minors offered in college. Our teachers brought seven juniors on a return visit. They were able to meet with college advisors and professors in fields that they are interested. Mr. Marske took one junior (Amber) to the honors college where a CMU honors student who received the centralis scholarship met up with the two of them. Amber was taken to the honors college to meet with an advisor to find out what it takes to get into the honors program. Amber also had a meeting with a professor in the Department of Health and Human Resources, who helped her plan out courses she would need to take to become a Physician assistant. Mr. Andersonm took (Annatasia) to meet with advisors in the area of Fashion design. Annatasia really enjoyed the meeting with the advisors and walked away with

My family and I were eating dinner in a restaurant a few nights ago, and when the tab came, I noticed a statement printed in bold letters, which said, “Save The Music Foundation.” Upon further reading, I learned the foundation has as its goal, the maintenance of music in the schools. The bill was soliciting a donation, which could be added to the restaurant tab, and would show the revised total for record-keeping purposes. This unobtrusive, but effective way of supporting the schools, is not only unique, but very creative. What better asset could be found

There are scores of ways that motivated individuals can support and sustain ever-improving schools. It is clear that adult involvement is necessary if we are to continue to build better and better academic systems. What better way to give this support, than to add a dollar or two to the total when you receive a restaurant check of this nature. It is imperative that we, as adults, get behind and become a part of the education of our young people. To stand on the sidelines, and expect that teachers, alone, can raise the competency level of our youth, is falla-

a CD about the entire program. Mr. Marske also took (Kaitlyn and Samantha) to the ROTC building on campus where they learned more about the program from a CMU student who is currently in it. They now know what to do to get into the program and how it will help them pay for college. The feedback from our students who went on the trip was very positive. So far we have taken about 90 at-risk students to CMU over the last year and a half. We are hoping to do another trip to CMU in April. I wanted to thank Dr. Hernandez for his efforts and hospitality. I also wanted to thank Dori Ike for organizing this for ERPS. She has been a big proponent of our students expanding their horizons.

Civic project gets chamber donation EATON RAPIDS — On Nov. 6, during the chili cook off and TGID party, the public rest room restoration project received additional funds for the project on Hamlin Court. The Eaton Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce (ERACC) presented a check for $1,000 to Sean Cotter of Eaton Federal Savings Bank who represents local civic groups coordinating the fundraiser. The chamber feels that the restoration project is important for the development of the downtown area and

that it has been long overlooked. Nice community facilities are important for the residents when they come downtown to visit the parks, eat at local restaurants and do business in Eaton Rapids. Anyone that would like to donate to the project should contact Sean Cotter at Eaton Federal Savings Bank or any civic group in our community. The ERACC and the local businesses would like to thank everyone for “Shopping ER.” — From the Eaton Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce

EATON RAPIDS - Mr. Dale’s Tradin’ Cards of Eaton Rapids is again conducting an annual toy/food/clothing drive for the Siren Shelter of Eaton County, now through Dec. 15. The number of people needing help continues to grow each month. Last year Siren turned away 510 households due to lack of funds and available services, triple the number the previous year. All we can do is our best to help those less fortunate. Without our help there will be no Christmas for these unfortunate children and adults. What

we all do can provide new hope for so many that now have none. Items needed are toys for all ages, household supplies, white goods, blankets, diapers, formula, clothing, coats, hats, gloves, scarves, all types of non-perishable food items (please check expiration dates) and monetary donations. Checks should be payable to Siren. We would like to thank everyone who has helped us support the Siren/Eaton Shelter so successfully in past years and ask that you do what you can by donating toys,

food, clothing and or cash this holiday season. The staff at Mr. Dale’s is working closely with the Siren folks to make sure all donations are delivered to local needy families and children. To give HOPE to someone who has little or none is truly a gift received. For more details call us at (517) 663-6136 or stop and see us at 156 S. Main St. in Eaton Rapids. We are available Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 am. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Wherry earns cross country all-state honors BILL McLEOD bmcleod@lsj.com

EATON RAPIDS - Despite the rigors of playing both high school soccer and running cross country, Greyhound sophomore Kenny Wherry continued to get stronger as the fall sports season wore on. Wherry turned in respectable times on the 5K cross country trails at the start of the cross country season, finishing fourth at Springport with a 17:11. But throughout the season Wherry continued to shave seconds off his time. He was sixth at the Greater Lansing Cross County Invitational with a 16:23 followed by a second-place finish at the final league jamboree of the season with a 16:20, all while playing soccer for a team that was batting to win its first district championship in 12 years. And like the soccer team, which saved its best for the last of the season, Wherry hit

his stride at the state cross country meet. He finished 15th with a time of 15:57 and walked away from the Michigan International Speedway with all-state honors. He also made his goals for the season. “I really wanted to go to states, get a top 15 and finally break 16 minutes,” Wherry said. This was Wherry’s first year running cross country, making his all-state performance even more impressive. Because of commitments to soccer, Wherry missed three races during the regular season. Three times during the season Wherry finished a 5K run, then changed into his soccer uniform and headed off to a game. “He’s a special athlete who wants to do as many things as he can, and do all of them well,” Eaton Rapids cross country coach Rick Smith said. “He’s a very diligent person who works very hard to be successful at whatever he

does.” Smith said it was easy to have Wherry as a dual-sport athlete with commitments to both soccer and cross country. “He always communicated with me, he was in my classroom and we would talk about what was on his schedule for soccer, and he would run whenever he could,” Smith said. Wherry, who was the only Eaton Rapids boy to qualify for the state meet, knew he had to keep with the front runners. “I tried to not get caught in the middle of the pack, because once that happens you get kind of screwed over,” he said. “But I didn’t want to burn everything early on.” Wherry kept pace with the top runners, avoiding getting bogged down among the 249 Division 2 harriers. “He analyzes races,” Smith said. “He doesn’t get as much time on the course as others, so he makes sure he knows who he is running

against and where they’ll be.” Wherry also showed his classroom skills, earning academic all-state honors with a 3.87 GPA. With soccer and cross country over, Wherry plans on joining the swim team to stay in shape for the spring track season. He made his mark with the Greyhound track team last spring as a distance runner. He’s set a lofty goal of running a 4:15 in the 1,600-meters and making the state meet. His long-term goal is to break the four-minute barrier. He looks to repeat as a cross country runner and a midfielder on the soccer team next fall. “It’s pretty tiring, I definitely didn’t think it would do that much to my body, but I always came home really Courtesy photo tired,” he said. “I’m glad I did both of them, I think we can Eaton Rapids’ Kenny Wherry finished 15th at the go way further in soccer and Division 2 state cross country meet, earning the I think I can get much faster Greyhound sophomore all-state honors. for cross.”
