Local WW II vets share their powerful stories By MARY JO WHITE

DELTA TWP. - Navy gunner Carl Kentner lived through 40 direct air attacks at Okinawa. Bill Carter watched the American flag raised at Iwo Jima. After he was shot down by the enemy, Russ Hilding wound up a prisoner of war in the Buchenwald concentration camp after being arrested by the Gestapo. These 65-year-old memories, as vivid as if they had happened yesterday, were just some of the stories presented by six World War II veterans to a spellbound and grateful audience at the Delta Township

District Library Nov. 4. The other three veterans were Chuck Greenough, Jim Perkins and Ernst Floeter. Greenough, who had never flown before he volunteered at 19 for the Army Air Corps in 1943, was shot down after 32 successful missions. “It was my worst day,” he said. “I thought it was going to be a milk run and we’d be home just across the channel.” Instead, Greenough landed in a corner of a field and crawled under some briar bushes, waiting to be captured. Hilding, a bombardier, was also shot down after he lost an engine and had to bail

out with a huge hole in the plane’s left wing, wondering why the aircraft didn’t blow up. All 10 of the crew members survived, with Hilding sent to Buchenwald, then on to a regular prisoner of war camp. “I won’t describe what I saw there,” he said of Buchenwald. Carter was an eager beaver of a teenager, teaching a freshman math class in his senior year of high school. But the young man with so much initiative didn’t expect to live another week when he arrived at Iwo Jima, where he would witness an iconic event that has come to symbolize

who shoots first lives.” Time, however, has given Kentner a broader perspective. “When I look back at 85, (I ask myself),” he said, “was I shooting airplanes or shooting people?” Perkins, sent to bomb an oil refinery in enemy territory, remembers the bravery of the Tuskegee flyers. “They would pick us up at the enemy border and escort us,” he said. “How much we appreciated them!” Floeter had, perhaps, the most unusual story. Drafted into the German army as

a young man, he never believed that the Axis powers would win the war. In fact, one of the highlights of his life was his capture by American soldiers he remembers as “fantastic.” “The Americans could have killed us; (instead) they shot over us,” Floeter said. He remembers one incident in which his glasses were hanging askew and, with his hands in the air in front of Allied soldiers, he couldn’t grab them. “If I put my hands down, I’d be gone,” he said. “If I didn’t put my hands down, my glasses would be gone.” He vividly remembers an

American GI carefully placing his glasses back on this nose. Asked about nightmares or other signs of post traumatic stress disorder, none of the veterans said they suffered in that way. The overpowering memories remain, however, along with smaller tales about censored mail, inedible food and missed paydays - even now, long after these men have married, raised families and pursued successful civilian careers. The memories are their legacy, and in the telling that marks each Veterans’ Day, our legacy as well.

hat is the one important endeavor that truly builds assets for any community? Friendliness is the answer. When we feel welcome, we are comfortable. A friendly community makes outsiders want to come back, and certainly

We have embraced a program called “Sensory Stimulation”—thus our name “Sensations.” This program affords our residents every opportunity to enjoy the quality of life they deserve. Each design element, from our familyfriendly indoor park and attractive resident rooms to our outdoor courtyards and antique gardens, has been created to help residents overcome challenges and enhance their capabilities. Where better to stay in touch with life than around the dinner table. That’s why we’ve created several cozy dining rooms, designed for a “Joy of Dining” experience, regardless of one’s level of ability. Our staff-to-resident ratio allows for unhurried, enjoyable dining. We know that care that allows residents to live with dignity translates into peace of mind for their families. ot all the time, but some times, nice things happen to nice people who deserve them. This happened to our boys’ high school soccer team this fall. One of the misconceptions I initially had was that I would get to spend a lot of time with students. Wrong! As the superintendent, I spend almost my entire time running the business of education. In college, I played soccer and am now what most of you would call an “old” soccer referee, so I tend to follow our district soccer teams with just a little special interest. The high school boys have just completed their season, led by two fine men and talented coaches, Matt Boersma and Jason Zeller. As the result of a little nudging from me and the offer of a free old referee, the boys kicked off their preseason with a rough and tumble game against our alumni players. It is a very fun way for our adults to come back, play a little, get the team ready for the season, and share some en-

Letter to the editor Article about Mike Morgan was unfair The article written by Kevin Grasha regarding Mike Morgan being charged in a bike accident is so bias the pubic isn’t getting a clear and true picture This accident occurred when a truly caring family man with a school teaching wife and three children was involved in this incident. Mike Morgan is a hard working

business man that trains bomb sniffing dogs, drug detection dogs, and personal protections dogs to make our society safer. He is very community minded and served as president of the Eaton Rapids Chamber of Commerce, also president of Eaton Rapids Rotary Club instigating many projects making Eaton Rapids a better place. Every year, for many years, he has volunteered to go to Dominica assisting a doctor and his staff to

improve the health of many poor kids. Mr. Morgan served our country for 23 years in both the U.S. Army and the National Guards of Michigan. As a loyal police officer in Michigan Mike put his well being on the line every day to promote safety and peace. In the future Mr. Grasha please be fair - this man deserved that. Home church welcomes members

EATON RAPIDS - There’s a new religious group in town these days, eager to welcome new members - the Eaton Rapids Area Home Church. Inspired by New Testament stories of Jesus and the apostles, members want to return to the meeting style of the very early Christians, keeping their meetings small and local by holding them in members’ homes. “Every Christian should ask themselves if they’ve lost their focus on Jesus as they’ve accepted all the

requirements of churches that are large worldly organizations,” said Sam Colegrove, one of the ERA Home Church founders. Home churches do not have priests, pastors or ministers. All members are considered equal and are the Church. They worship God by studying the scriptures, praying and sharing blessings with each other as equals even though they come from different backgrounds and experiences. Who attends home church? Many are folks

News in brief Local blood drives

The American Red Cross has scheduled blood drives for the following dates: • Nov. 15: First United Methodist Church, 600 S. Main, Eaton Rapids, noon-5:45 p.m. • Nov. 16: Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, 210 E. Lawrence Ave., Charlotte, 11 a.m.-4:45 p.m. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good general health. To schedule an appointment at one of the above blood drives or for information on a blood drive, call 1-800-GIVE LIFE or visit www.redcrossmichigan.org.

who were regular churchgoers but have stopped attending. Others are those who haven’t been back to church since their wedding day or never started to go to church in the first place. All of these good people had their own reasons for not going to a familiar place every Sunday. Many have opted to not attend church because they don’t feel comfortable with the schedule or the worship service or the constant requests for donations. Leaving the known is an exciting move, but also scary. It requires a leap of faith. The ERA Home Church started meeting last August, first at Island Park and then at the new amphitheater. Meetings are now held in members’ homes. As this Body of Christ grows, the intent is to maintain small intimate groups of 12-20 people. As each group becomes large enough to split, dividing up will be accomplished by unanimous

decision and planning. By doing this, members will build a sense of community. Home church members are not looking for large numbers of people. They have no building mortgage, so they need no pledging units. The ERA Home Church is looking for fellowship with one another, so consider bringing your Bible and checking out the group. “We’re looking forward to meeting new people who share our concerns and feel comfortable with services at home,” said Sarah Colegrove, Sam’s wife. Sarah also says the group welcomes children. The ERA Home Church will meet at Roger and Miki Davis’ house at 8771 Cockroft Road, on November 14 and 21 from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Please call Miki at 517-857-3977 or Sarah at 517-663-8536 for directions and more information. - From the ERA Home Church

You deserve a rapid recovery from your hysterectomy. A robotic-assisted hysterectomy offers most women numerous potential benefits over traditional approaches to hysterectomies, particularly with more complex procedures like radical hysterectomy for gynecological cancer. Women undergoing robotic-assisted surgery typically experience: • Significantly less pain and fewer complications • Less blood loss and a decreased risk of infection • Less scarring • A shorter hospital stay (as short as a single day for total hysterectomies) and dramatically-decreased recovery time • A quicker return to normal daily activities Sparrow is mid-Michigan’s leader in robotic-assisted surgery.
