Wicker places in contest New city Web site is finished

By MARY JO WHITE

mjwhite@lsj.com

EATON RAPIDS - Seventeen-yearold Hannah Wicker of Eaton Rapids is one determined young woman. With her eye on a food career that just might include her own top-ofthe-line steakhouse someday, she’s currently taking culinary arts classes through the Eaton ISD at Lansing Community ColHannah lege’s downtown Wicker campus. Wicker is also finishing up credits at Greyhound High School, working a job at Celebration Cinema (where she admits to spicing up the popcorn) and raising her 1-year-old son, Leon Wicker-Hidy. Wicker’s latest achievement is winning second place in the 2011 SkillsUSA Michigan culinary contest, which requires contestants to prepare a meal in three hours using a menu they learn of only when the competition begins. On April 16, she will move on to the next level of the contest at Washtenaw Community College. It was a very competitive experience with 18 culinary students from seven career centers, according to Mary Ellen Brocklehurst, student services coordinator of career and technical education for the Eaton ISD, with five professional chefs judging everything from deboning the meat to the cleanup. “It’s an incredible honor,” Brocklehurst said. “Hannah is the first culinary student (of ours) to go to regionals in seven or eight years.”

and got the Food Network for the first time. She fell in love with Rachel Ray and Alton Brown on “Good Eats.” Of course, she does remember writing her own elaborate breakfast menus at age five, complete with prices. Her mom, Terri Wicker, also remembers vividly that the bacon and eggs were pretty pricey. “I bought the food and she charged us for making it,” Terri said. Eventually the family figured out it was best to just tip the cook. Hannah didn’t become a foodie because of her mom. In fact, Terri confesses she isn’t much of a cook at all. She and her sister, Brenda Stohr, even used to joke that their children might one day say they’d like “a home-made meal like mom used to make: hot dogs and mac and cheese.” Not Hannah. “I’ll eat anything,” she said recently, “but if I’m cooking, there’s no way Getting hooked I’m putting a hot dog on your plate.” Wicker says she really got hooked In fact, Hannah’s menu for a reon cooking in seventh grade when cent family lunch read like something her family switched cable companies from a five-star restaurant: a brus-

Gaining experience

She’s already had some professional experience, too, starting with cooking at the Cadillac Club in Lansing at 13. At 16, she began catering during Lugnuts games for the press box, players and suites. Eventually she wants to pursue a hospitality and business management degree at Michigan State University. At the time she was pregnant with See Wicker/page 3

EATON RAPIDS — Residents now have a virtual place to visit where they can pay their city utility bill, learn about the latest local developments and view historical photos — all at once. The city’s new Web site, located at www.cityofeatonrapids.com, debuted just a few weeks ago, offering a renovated portal to local happenings and organizations that officials say will be anything but stagnant. “We wanted something that, when it comes up, it changes weekly,” said Eaton Rapids City Clerk Kristy Reinecke. Reinecke worked with the city’s Mayor Steven Platte to achieve that goal in house at a minimal cost to the city — the only expense being an annual Web hosting fee of just over $100. Platte, a network engineer with the Department of Defense, has been voluntarily helping to create Web site’s for the last five years. Two years ago he helped his local pastor at Eaton Rapids’ First Baptist Church design a site for the congregation. He still

assists in maintaining it. Platte said while he helped create the city site’s construct and design, Reinecke will be handling weekly updates on the Web page. “Once we had the framework set up and knew what the new structure was going to be she’s really run with it and pretty much filled in the rest of the content,” said Platte.

Current resources

Reinecke and Platte began working on the site in October, she said. The former city Web site was created by a consultant firm over five years ago. But Reinecke said she and Platte wanted the Web page to be user-friendly and ever changing. “We had a list of probably 50 different sites that we liked and we used that to create this site,” she explained. They also reached out within the community to obtain on-going news submissions from the local school district, hospital, businesses and community organizations. Those articles will appear on the site and be changed out for new ones on a weekly basis. Other features on the site include: • a link for paying city utility bills; • copies of city meeting See

Davenport to run for drain commissioner EATON COUNTY Roxand Township-resident Sarah Davenport announced on Wednesday, April 6, her candidacy for Eaton County drain commissioner, a position currently held by Mike Atayan. Sarah She is run- Davenport ning to be the Republican nominee in the November 2012 election. Davenport will launch her campaign this weekend with a chili and Coney dog dinner meet-and-greet fundraiser from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, April 9, at the Grand Ledge American Le-

gion, 731 N. Clinton St. in Grand Ledge. Tickets are $10 at the door. Davenport said her experience in civil engineering and construction, and background as a life-long Eaton County resident makes her the best candidate to serve as drain commissioner. “Eaton County needs a fiscally conservative drain commissioner who respects that families today are dealing with tight household budgets,” Davenport said. “As drain commissioner, I will put my experience to work for taxpayers to ensure projects are completed in a timely and cost-effective way.” Born and raised in the

Mulliken area, Davenport lives in Roxand Township with her husband, Brent. She attended Michigan Technological University and has worked for a Michiganbased engineering firm for 11 years. Davenport is a member

of the American Business Women’s Association, Grand Ledge Chapter, and has served as its past president. In January, the group awarded her its Woman of the Year award. She also is active in the Eaton County Republican

Party and the Eaton County Tea Party. Unique to Michigan, a county drain commissioner has broad legal powers to address drainage and flooding to protect property and prevent erosion, and to protect surface water from pol-

lution. The office has the authority to directly levy taxes on property owners. For more information about Davenport and her campaign, visit www.VoteDavenport.com. - From Sarah Davenport.

DELTA TWP. — About 50 members of the Capital Area Down Syndrome Association escaped a cold, rainy day recently to have fun at the Zap Zone in Delta Township. They had come from all over the tri-county area on March 21 to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, the date chosen because those with the syndrome have an extra 21st chromosome. There were games of glow-in-the-dark golf and laser tag, bumper car rides and lots of pizza and cake. And it was hard to tell who was having the most fun: the kids or the parents watching them. #Fun event “It gives families something different to do, a fun, free day sponsored by CADSA,” said Carrie Moore of

Mason, the group’s president. Six-year-old Lily Huckleberry of DeWitt , her shiny strawberry blond hair cascading over the side of her face, was fascinated by the stuffed animals in the “BuildYour-Own-Bear” room. Caleb Day and Willie Jenks, both 11-year-olds from Holt, couldn’t get enough of smashing into each other in the bumper cars. Holt resident Kim Sharpe, an Eaton ISD occupational therapist, spent time watching the bumper cars with one of her students too young for a ride, 3-year-old Brady Tomlin of Eaton Rapids. Brady’s mom, Dawn, a medical social worker at the Eaton County Medical Care facility, is CADSA’s new member coordinator and the main organizer of the event. “We wanted a family event that would promote awareness of Down Syn-

drome and celebrate our families,” Tomlin said. She said it was the group’s first time at Zap Zone and it turned out to be a very enjoyable experience. Zap Zone often participates in fundraisers, according to manager Craig Goschke, and was happy to host CADSA and provide the group a discount. By the end of the afternoon, 3-year-old Owen Kribs of Haslett couldn’t keep his eyes open. Luckily his mom, Wendi, had just the shoulder to nap on. CADSA’s largest fundraiser of the year is an event at the Potter Park Zoo scheduled this year for September 18. It will include a walk through the zoo, a moonwalk and other fun activities, as well as a silent auction Mary Jo White and a raffle. For more information, log Three-year-old Brady Tomlin of Eaton Rapids enjoys an afternoon at Zap Zone on to www.cadsa.org. March 21. With Brady is his Eaton ISD occupational therapist, Kim Sharpe of

Lions to collect April 29-30 EATON RAPIDS — The Eaton Rapids Lions Club will not only be collecting for White Cane on Friday and Saturday, April 29 and 30, but they will also be collecting eyeglasses, sunglasses and hearing aids. The club wants to make it even easier for people to donate these items to the Lions. The eyeglasses are used in club missions to Third World countries. The sunglasses are used in missions to Third World countries as well. Why sunglasses? Many of the missions are in countries located near the Equator. The use of sunglasses help to protect the eyes from the hurtful ultraviolet rays of the sun. The hearing aids can be recycled right here in the United States for people in need. Look for the Lions from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 29 and 30, at Quality Dairy, Admiral Gas Station, Family Fare Food Store and Family Fare Gas Station. — From the Eaton Rapids Lions Club

Sharon, the oldest of four children, was born on January 5, 1943, to Wayne and Grace Gruesbeck in Perry, Michigan. She graduated at the top of her class from Eaton Rapids High School in 1961. In 1962 she married Thomas Black and they moved to Great Falls, Montana. The couple had two children, Ted (Phillis) Black of Glendale, Arizona, and Amy (Neil) Bosworth of Woodbridge, Virginia. She was later divorced. Sharon graduated from the University of Montana and taught in the Choteau, Montana, public schools for 16 years. In 1987, at the age of 44, she entered Gonzaga Law School, graduating in 1990. After graduation, she served as a law clerk for the Montana Supreme Court. Sharon was blessed to have four grandchildren, Reid and Maggie Bosworth, Thomas and Hugh Black who didn’t begin to arrive until she was 61. Sharon loved the mountains and enjoyed hiking and backpacking in the Wind Rivers in Wyoming and along the eastern front of the Rockies. She and Bill enjoyed traveling to bridge tournaments in the northwestern U.S. and Canada, as well as playing in Hawaii. Sharon was preceded in death by her father. Besides her husband at the family home in Sandpoint, and her children, and grandchildren, she is survived by her mother Grace Gruesbeck of Eaton Rapids and her mother-in-law, Marie Whitesel, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Sharon also leaves a brother, Robert (Barbara) Gruesbeck, and two sisters, Phyllis Boyd, and Carolyn (Dan Chunko) McNamara, of Eaton Rapids, Michigan. Sharon is also survived by eight stepchildren, fourteen step-grandchildren, several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. A Funeral Service was held in Sandpoint, ID on March 18, 2011 and Sharon was placed to rest at the Pinecrest Memorial Park overlooking the beautiful mountains she loved.
