Schools, legislators agree: cuts severe By MARY JO WHITE

mjwhite@lsj.com

EATON RAPIDS - At a special breakfast March 11 at the Radisson Hotel, Eaton Rapids Board of Education members were out in force, along with superintendent Bill DeFrance — eager to hear what their legislators had to say about proposed cuts to the education budget. The seven legislators on the panel all agreed on three points: that a well educated workforce is essential, that they were going to have to make tough budget decisions and that they would all support a ballot proposal to constitutionally protect K-12 funding. After the breakfast Eaton Rapids school board vice president Deb Brinson said she thought the ballot idea should be explored. “Education is the backbone of the state and of vibrant communities,” she said. “We need a bi-partisan group to work collectively.” Everyone agreed there is no quick fix to what Waverly Schools board member Edith Suttles compared to the 8.9 earthquake that had shaken Japan that morning. “It took us years to get into this situation and it will take years to get out,” said state representative Deb Shaughnessy. “There is no magic bullet.”

At right is Eaton Rapids superintendent Bill DeFrance. A packed room of superintendents and school board members from various districts listened to legislators answer questions about how to deal with proposed school budget cuts. State senator Rick Jones said he believes the proposed cuts are too much. “I don’t think it needs to be this deep,” he said. The panel fielded questions on tenure reform, consolidation of services, business taxes, retiree “legacy costs” and using school aid fund money to support community colleges and universities. “A budget that cuts K-12 education and community colleges by 22 percent is absolutely the wrong way to go if we want to be a magnet,” said state representative Joan Bauer.

State Rep. Mark Meadows noted that so-called legacy costs — money sent back from the districts to cover retiree health care — are huge. “(This issue) is not limited to school employees,” he said. “We need a single state plan.” Time ran out before audience members could ask their own questions, but some were written down for a later response. Other legislators on the panel were state representative Kevin Cotter and state senators Judy Emmons and Gretchen Whitmer.

From prison to God: Man credits ministry’s impact By MARY JO WHITE mjwhite@lsj.com

K

urt Skinner of Eaton Rapids knows a lot about prison life, having spent three and a half years incarcerated in North Carolina for drug trafficking offenses. He sold pot, acid and cocaine and has the colorful stories to prove it. Once he managed a trip on a Greyhound bus, for instance, with drugs hidden in his boots. Today Skinner credits his prison

years for what has been perhaps his greatest blessing — finding God and the strength to turn his life around. Waiting to be sentenced, he happened to have a short conversation with another inmate, a conversation that “planted a seed” in his soul that eventually blossomed into a new way of living. “Prison is a miserable life,” Skinner said, “(but) I don’t carry that with me (anymore),” adding that after giving his See Ministry/page 3

Pop quiz — local students knowledge tested I had the honor of being invited to the high school senior breakfast in early March. One of my roles was delivering pancakes to the front line from the griddles. The Women’s Club of Eaton Rapids provided a wonderful breakfast for over 200 people. The other role was to engage the seniors in an exPaw ercise. Below is what they prints worked on. Gift certificates to Evelyn Bay were given to the Bill DeFrance winning groups. The winning groups got eight, nine, or 10 of these questions right. See how you do. The questions are followed immediately by the answers: 1. What is the number one school predictor of adult success? Grade point average (GPA)

2. What two traits guarantee success in both the classroom and workplace? Attitude and aptitude 3. What attribute or variable has the best correlation to high income? Education 4. What are the Michigan colleges with tuition over $30,000 per year? Albion, Center for Creative Studies in Detroit (near Wayne State’s campus), Kalamazoo, University of Detroit-Mercy 5. To the nearest hundred, what is the annual cost of tuition at LCC? $2,400. Eaton Rapids is not in the LCC tax jurisdiction so the tuition rates are higher. 6. Which Michigan university has the highest out of state tuition? University of Michigan 7. Which Michigan college takes no state or federal aid? Hillsdale 8. Name any Michigan college, community college, or university that did not raise tuition this year. There were none. 9. Name a Michigan college for the arts. Kendall, Center

for Creative Studies and Michigan Institute of Arts. There are more. 10. How many Michigan colleges raised their tuition this year by more than 10 percent? None, everyone raised tuition. 11. This statement has the highest level of agreement from college freshmen. The students were given 11 statements to choose from. Colleges should prohibit racist/sexist speech on campus 12. Top two reasons for freshmen selecting a college to attend. Cost and types of programs offered. 14. Name a top flight technical college. There are many (LCC, Kettering) 15. Name the last three rulers, as well as the opposition group, in Egypt. Nasser, Sadat, and Mubarak with the opposition group being the Muslim Brotherhood formed in 1928. 16. Who is the ruler/dictator in Libya? Moamar Ghadafi Bill DeFrance is the superintendent of Eaton Rapids Public Schools.

Letter to the editor Support for local DI teams is encouraged

Eaton Rapids’ Destination Imagination teams are our “community assets.” On March 5, 48 students from Eaton Rapids Public Schools took part in the Regional Tournament for Destination Imagination. There were nine teams present. Teams ranged from 3rd grade to seniors. For some, it was a first time experience, for others, they have spent more than half of their educational years involved with DI. All this is made possible by the parents who volunteer their time to be managers, appraisers, or coordinators.

They do this because they care about the educational School on Saturday, April 16 for the State DI tournament experiences of our kids in Eaton Rapids. where six of our nine teams will compete. Because of their grant writing, we have found finanThe Eaton Rapids Creativity Club cial support over the years from the Eaton Rapids Public School Education Foundation and a first-year grant from DART Corporation. Because of the generosity of those involved, we have allowed students a chance for creativity and to build team skills. In giving recognition, we must not forget to mention the true wonders of this program — the students. Residential & Commercial They allow us to see new possibilities with unending enthusiasm. Bond vote happened for a good reason

While I agree with a recent letter to the editor that it is a sad state of affairs when less than a quarter of the parents vote in an election that involves their children’s school, I applaud those that voted the recent school bond

down. I received mailings, automated phone calls and reminders at school functions — all urging me to vote for the bond measure. What I did not hear was how this money was going to help educate my children.I heard about new buses, new computers, new expensive learning programs, security cameras for a parking lot,

an updated auditorium, and more money for athletics. While none of these things are bad, none of them are necessary either. Our kids don’t need stateof-the-art computer systems and nice new athletic facilities. They need a world class education so they can compete with the rest of the

11 world and win. In the Feb. 27 edition, several members of the school board felt they needed to better understand why we voted no and how to change the no to a yes. For me, spend money to educate my children. That will change my vote to yes. Ben Huisman Eaton Rapids

Eaton Conservation District will donate tree seedlings to youth groups, classes and families that participate. According to Executive Director Andrea Stay, “This is a great opportunity for kids to learn about the environment and be involved in tree plantings in their community.”

Involving youth

The Go Green Youth Challenge will engage Michigan youth in environmental stewardship, community development and servicelearning by participating in a statewide effort to plant trees in Michigan. Challenge is a winner. Participants can provide input on where trees should be planted in Michigan. Every participant will receive a survey asking where they think trees should be planted. The answers will help determine where future trees are planted. Educators, group leaders and parents can receive downloadable education materials and access an online community to connect with to receive even more resources. Incentives, awards and special offers are based on the size of the participating group. The grand prize is a tree planting in your community and an invitation to the State Arbor Day Celebration to be awarded to the school or group that raises the most for the Go Green Youth Challenge. EATON RAPIDS — The Eaton Rapids fourth grade boys travel basketball team recently went to Saline to compete in the Southeast Michigan Championships. Facing tough competition, the ‘Hounds finished with a 1-2 record and settled for sixth place. Their first game was very competitive and Eaton Rapids ended up losing, 32-26, to South Lyon. The next game was a tough match-up for the Eaton Rapids boys as they squared off against FABE, a Flint-area all-star team. The team played hard and never gave up in the 43-8 loss. The last game was a match-up against Milan and the young ‘Hounds fought to a 23-14 victory. RJ VanVliet led the team in scoring for the tourna-

ment with 16 total points, which included 13 points in the first game. Nathan Dassance had 15 total points and Spencer Dick had 10. Chase Metts scored 4, Scott Rhoads and Caileb Brown added 3, and Deion Rogers and Griffin Gleeson each had 2. Zachary Dassance and Brayden McDaniel helped the team with several assists, steals and rebounds. Charles Johns, Gavin Bogardus, Bronson Sysum, Coltin Anderson and Tristin Hollandsworth were unable to participate in the weekend tournament but the team is looking forward to getting everyone back together for a couple spring and summer tournaments. The Eaton Rapids ‘Hounds currently have a 18-12 overall record. — From Jeff Dassance
