Eaton Rapids library celebrates 135 years

By MARY JO WHITE

mjwhite@lsj.com

T

he 135-year-old Eaton Rapids Public Library is an unexpected treasure trove for history buffs. They’ve found handwritten library board minutes from the 1880s in beautifully embellished script, for instance. Back then, a librarian’s annual salary was $125 and the yearly budget for new books an astounding $15.30. Staff have also found a passenger manifest for the Kaiser Wilhelm II, a German steamship on its way to New York when World War I broke out that was seized by the United States and eventually turned into a Navy ship. There’s a wooden librarian’s desk with floral carvings and a top that can be raised to store important documents, as well as a turn-of-the-century metal inkwell and tray that have been recycled for modern use. Today the inkwell houses paper clips and the tray date stampers and ink pads. Librarians, it seems, are very resourceful.

Celebrating the milestone Plan to celebrate this milestone anniversary with these events at the Eaton Rapids Library. • Author Talk with local author and retired ER teacher Kathleen McGlinchy on Wednesday, Feb.16 at 7 p.m. • Friends of the Library monthly book sale, Saturday, Feb. 19, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. • Open House with displays, door prizes and birthday cake on Sunday, Feb. 27 2 to 5 p.m. In addition, the library will hold weekly drawings in February for a year’s free library service ($25 gift certificates) and special library canvas tote bags. Porter says she has really enjoyed discovering these pieces of history and deciding what to do with them, helped by Brandon Rappel, a public history student at Western Michigan University whose task as an intern was to catalogue every item in the library’s historical collection. Rappel, now a WSU grad, is currently employed by the library. “I’ve (even) had trouble Pieces of history getting my real work done,” The greatest surprise so Porter said. Even the youngest can hone their computer skills with educational games on two children’s stations with rainbow keyboards . There are also many DVDs and videos for rent. “There is a lot to do at the library even without the books,” Porter said.

Creativity

In these days of shrinking budgets, Porter has had to be pretty creative, too. For instance, the new energy efficient front windows that replaced the rattling grocery store panes were paid for by a $19,000 Reinhardt Library Fund grant that she pursued. Porter would like to see her library become a district library, but knows the required millage makes that

So she’s had to reduce staff hours as well as the hours that the library is open. “The city’s been very good to us, but we do come out of their general fund,” Porter said. “If anybody has looked at the price of a book at Barnes and Noble,

$25 isn’t much money.” About 10 years ago the library started charging a $25 annual service fee for individuals who live outside the city, $45 for a family. There are also 90-day cards for $5, which are a boon to parents over the summer when schools are closed.

Porter also sees the MEL interlibrary loan system as an invaluable part of what the library has to offer, calling it a “big lifesaver.” “It allows us to offer patrons over 40 million books that we couldn’t afford to buy,” she said. See

EATON RAPIDS — He came to play. Former Detroit Lion and Michigan State Spartan football player T.J. Duckett came to Northwestern Elementary Dec. 15 to play some Wii and hand out “high-fives” to the school’s second- and third-graders. He also collected over $670 for a charitable program known as Cuts For Cancer. Northwestern Phys Ed and Health teacher Eric Frohriep was responsible for arranging the visit. “He (Duckett) was awesome,” he said. “The kids

had a great time, and he gave out lots of high-fives.” Frohriep said the visit got its start way back in the fall, when he kicked off a healthy life-style program called Play 60 sponsored by the NFL (National Football League). “It encourages kids to play, or exercise, for 60 minutes every day,” Frohriep said. Aside from getting promotional materials through the program, Frohriep got a Internet link to a new Wii game from EA Sports called NFL Training Camp. Think-

ing it looked like a great way to get kids up and moving, he contacted EA Sports, explained his work with the kids and asked if they might be willing to send Northwestern a free game. He got more than expected, as EA Sports sent the school 20 free games. Frohriep said the school held a drawing to decide which students got the games. But attached to the whole idea of getting a new Wii game was the idea that some kids would actually get a chance to play the game with Duckett. In addition his e-mailing EA Sports, Frohriep had sent out an e-mail to Duckett, originally from Kalamazoo. Frohriep has been a “fan” for many years, as he attended Kalamazoo College. Duckett played for Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo before going to play for Michigan State University. Frohriep knew of Duckett’s local work in raising money for cancer research an effort known as Cuts For Cancer, which works with Ingham Medical Center in Courtesy photo Lansing. Part of the fundraising efforts involve him Northwestern third-grader Morgan Vanderwall was growing his beard. So Frohriep asked: the first Wii challenger for T.J. Duckett.

In the School Bond Proposal Teachers and textbooks are what most people think of when they hear “academics.” Unfortunately, school districts are not allowed to use bond money for these things. Rather, bond money can only go to support what happens in the classroom through improvements in learning environments. Passage of the bond proposal would significantly help the district preserve the general fund for essential direct instruction, while using bond funds to enhance learning environments. Approximately 16.5% of the $25.1 million school bond proposal will go toward

Let’s provide for our students

When I arrived in Eaton Rapids as the high school band director five years ago, I felt a great deal of pride to be teaching in such a wonderful community. Today, I still wake up every morning with that same sense of pride. To teach in a community that has such wonderful students across the board truly is a gift. Our students give so much to me personally but also to all of us that, on Feb. 22, I hope the community will choose to give back to them. Our performing arts students are one of a kind. It’s not every student who is willing to work hard on anything, then stand up in front of a crowd of people and say, “here it is.” Other curricular classes have appropriate means of assessment (tests, papers, etc.) but few of them have assessments done in front of the community at large. I believe it is only right to give those students the best possible opportunity to showcase their talents by massively renovating our current high school auditorium. It’s no secret that our current auditorium is lacking in certain areas. The acoustics and lines of sight are poor, the size of the stage and audience seating are inadequate, and there are many backstage safety issues to be concerned about. For comparison purposes, our auditorium is about 40 years old. Of schools in the

area with an auditorium, the next oldest was built in 1997! We are simply not remaining competitive with our neighbors in this area. At some point in their school lives, every student who attends Eaton Rapids schools will use that auditorium-many of them on multiple occasions. We have band and choir students at GIS, ERMS, and ERHS but also wonderful elementary students who use the space (even though they don’t always fit on the stage). Our visual art students have art on display in the auditorium area (even though there is no dedicated space for this resulting in simply tacking a limited number of art projects on the walls for display). Theater students in middle school and high school use the auditorium to showcase their productions as best they can in the space (even though the sound and lighting are not reliable and, depending on your seat in the audience, you might not be able to see your child anyway). We have several community organizations that make regular use of the space putting on theatrical productions, dance recitals, and community talent shows. The auditorium has housed funerals and family reunions as well truly making this not just a school space — but a community space. We do have wonderful kids in our community with a wide variety of talents. It is with them in mind that I ask you to please consider supporting the bond and providing not only those students but the rest of the

community with the type of performance space they truly deserve. When classroom students need the best possible classroom to learn in-we find a way to provide. When athletes need a safe field to play on — we find a way to provide. Our arts students are looking for the best possible space for them to perform — I hope we will find a way to provide for them. Adam Gumbrecht Director of Bands, Eaton Rapids High School

Bond is good idea

My name is Karl Grant. I live here in Eaton Rapids School District with my wife Kimberly and daughter Taylor. She attends Eaton Rapids sixth grade. Also, my granddaughter is one and will attend Eaton Rapids schools when it is time.

I run my own Eaton Rapids-based company called TCI Inc. of Michigan (Excavation & Concrete). The Feb. 22 school bond proposal is a good idea for all of us. If it passes, our students will benefit, but so will the local economy. It will allow the district to invest money right here, where we need it to be. I have confidence in the construction management company that the district has chosen to manage the bond projects, Granger Construction. They have made a commitment to seek out qualified local contractors to work on the bond projects. Keeping it local is extremely important and will help the entire community. The school is very committed to use as much local contractor for this as they can. Please join me in supporting the bond proposal by voting “yes” on Feb. 22. Karl and Kim Grant Eaton Rapids

HASLETT - Greyhound boy hoops hit a rough stretch in the road, losing a pair of nonleague games. Eaton Rapids lost to Haslett 65-54 Jan. 21, then fell to Portland 64-52 Jan. 25. The two losses gives Eaton Rapids a 3-7 overall record. Senior point guard Travis Wells continues to scorch the net for Eaton Rapids, scoring 20 points against Haslett and 25 against Portland. He is the fourth ranked scorer among area high school players, averaging 22.7 points per game. Against Haslett, the Greyhounds’ Jacob Masteller hit a jumper to start the game. Travis Wells followed with a jumper off the high glass to put the Greyhounds up 4-0. A basket by Sam Delamater gave Eaton Rapids a 6-2 lead. But Haslett put together a 9-3 run to go up 13-9. Lorenzo Morales put back a rebound to stop the Viking run with two minutes left in the opening quarter. Masteller drove

the baseline to cut the Viking lead to 15-13 with less than a minute left in the first quarter. Haslett’s Zach Porritt hit a three-pointer with two seconds left to give the Vikings a five-point lead to start the second quarter. Ta’ron Gentry and Travis Wells each scored to cut the Haslett lead to one point early in the second quarter. Haslett closed out the first half with a 7-2 run to take a 30-23 lead. The Vikings continued to pull away in the third quarter with a 14-2 run. Morales finally stopped the Eaton Rapids bleeding with a two-pointer, but Haslett had taken a commanding 44-27 lead. Wells and Kyle Price each scored in the final two minutes of the third quarter to cut the Haslett lead to 20 points. “They pressured us and our guys panicked a little bit,” Eaton Rapids coach Luke Brown said about the Haslett defense. “They came out and ran the floor very well and we weren’t rebounding or getting back (on defense) and that’s a dangerous com-

bination.” Price jump started a 12-3 Eaton Rapids run in the fourth quarter when he drove the baseline for a basket, drew a foul and made the free throw. Derek Morris, Travis Wells and Craig Wells each hit three pointers to pull the Greyhounds to within 14 points. Travis Wells drove to the hoop with 1:10 left in the fourth quarter to cut the Viking lead to 10. Travis Wells scored his final basket with 20 seconds left. Masteller scored eight points. Gentry and Price each had six points. Against Portland, Eaton Rapids fell behind 27-22 at half time. The Greyhounds pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Red Raiders 19-11 to take a 41-38 lead. Portland won the battle of the fourth quarter, outscoring Eaton Rapids 26-11 to seal the win. Craig Wells scored six points. Gentry had five points. Shelby Sanchez had four points. Curtis Wells and Matt Althouse each scored three points.
