Looking ahead to 2011

Local leaders resolve for better New Year

By MARY JO WHITE

mjwhite@lsj.com

EATON RAPIDS - A new year means fresh starts and new ideas. But it also means keeping on keeping on with the important day-to-day tasks that aren’t new at all. Here’s what some local leaders are planning for 2011. Eaton Rapids Medical Center president and CEO Tim Johnson says at the top of his wish list is that the day will soon come when all people will have insurance that will cover the cost of their health care. The medical center itself has a resolution of its own, too. “The center’s resolution is to continue to deliver highquality health care to our community, regardless of what happens with health-care reform and hospital reimbursements,” Johnson said. The Eaton Rapids school district has needs of its own, the biggest one is financial. Superintendent Bill DeFrance says he hopes the $25.1 million bond proposal passes next Feb. 22 and that politicians figure out how to better fund all K-12 schools, community colleges and four-year colleges. He also wishes that all high school grads will be ready to do whatever they wish to do when they graduate. On a positive note, the district’s enrollment drop seems to be turning around and he hopes the trend continues. “This is the first year in five where our kindergarten enrollment increased over the previous year,” DeFrance said. Roz Bullen of Heart and Hands is perhaps the person most in touch with local residents in need at the end of a most difficult year. Bullen says she has been seeing an increase in the number of folks homeless because their income just won’t stretch far enough. “It’s hard to find appropriate housing for their income, especially renters,” Bullen said. Her main wish for the new year is the stability that only permanent housing can bring to people’s lives. Newly elected state representative Deb Shaughnessy reflected on how much her life will change when she begins work in the capitol. “I resolve to try to protect my time with my husband,” she said. “I am used to working part time and spending time with (husband) Steve.” Shaughnessy expects to seek ways to contact all of

“The center’s resolution is to continue to deliver high-quality health care to our community, regardless of what happens with health-care reform and hospital reimbursements.” – Tim Johnson, Eaton Rapids Medical Center president and CEO

To finish out the old year, the Eaton Rapids Public Library made some changes that will ensure more good years to come — we got new windows! Gone are the old, thin, single-paned windows and in their place are new, energyefficient front windows, guaranteed to make a difference in our heating and cooling costs. Our library was the recipient of a Reinhardt Library Grant in the amount of

$19,000 to be used to replace our windows. The Reinhardt Library Grants are administered by the law firm of Currie Kendall of Midland, Mich. Mr. Robert C. Reinhardt had a great interest in helping small rural

libraries and when he died in 2008, money was put aside in a trust to fund the grants given in his name. Our library is very pleased to be chosen for one of these grants and we’re grateful for the opportunity to improve our library building. I would also like to thank our patrons for their patience and understanding in regard to the library being closed in the days before Christmas for this installation. We real-

ize that our sudden closing caused difficulties for some and we are sorry for that, but we needed to take advantage of this window of opportunity — no pun intended — and had to act quickly. The library staff also gets high marks for working their usual shifts with little heat and layer upon layer of clothes and gloves, trying to keep warm while answering phones and shelving, etc. And a special note to anyone

who tried to call the library and got cut off — there were also phone problems. The new year of 2011 will be a special one for our library. In February, the Eaton Rapids Public Library will be celebrating its 135th year of service to Eaton Rapids! This is, indeed, something to be celebrated. We have a lot planned, culminating with a big birthday party/

open house celebration at the end of February. Watch for more information about our plans at the library and in the papers. Happy New Year from all of us here at the library: Sandy, Lauri, Teresa, Brandon and Patrick. Sandy Porter is the director at the Eaton Rapids Public Library.
