DARA’s camp earns state license By KURT MADDEN kumadden@lsj.com

DEWITT — The DeWitt Area Recreation Authority’s popular summer camp has received the stamp of approval from the state Department of Human Services. The DHS has officially certified DARA’s Summer Fun Club — an 11-week , multifaceted activity-charged program — as a licensed day camp. Clay Summers, DARA’s executive director, says the certification is an added assurance that safety measures and staff training meet basic standards. “We felt that we were at a point in our development that we should take the step to become licensed by the state,” Summers said. It took about a month and a half for the necessary paperwork to be completed to

apply for the license. The state requires a criminal history check and a child protective services check of staff members. Also evaluated are camp staff requirements, health services, food service, policies and procedures. Fire safety and sanitation procedures are also part of the state’s evaluation. “A day camp is defined as a program that runs at least four days a week , more than four hours a day,” Summers said. In previous years, DARA summer programs were usually comprised of three-week segments. The Summer Fun Club is already in its fourth week, and will end on Aug. 27. “It is entirely flexible program. You can sign up for one week, three weeks, or all 11 weeks. Parents don’t have to worry about paying

Camp schedule July 6-9 — Into the Wild, field trip to Potter Park Zoo. July 12-16 — Water, field trip to the DeWitt High School pool. for the entire camp, knowing that their kids will not be able to attend for a couple of weeks because of a family vacation,” Summers said. One staff member is on hand for every 10 kids. The weekly camps attract an average of 32 youngsters,

aged 5-12, requiring four counselors. DARA serves the City of DeWitt and DeWitt Township, but will accept participants from Bath Township for an additional $5 charge. The cost is $95 per child per week for residents of DeWitt.

DEWITT — A long hoped-for event will finally get its day in the sun on Sunday, July 11. That’s the date for the inaugural Art in the Park, planned to run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Riverside Park in downtown DeWitt. The event is being hosted by the DeWitt Area Chamber of Commerce, which planned it as a complement to that day’s Midsummer Blooms Garden Walk. Chamber president Loretta Spinrad said Garden Club members approached the chamber about collaborating. “We think their event is great for the community, and we want to support their event,” she said. “We have wanted to have an art fair for years, and this was a great opportunity to partner with them to bring Art in the Park to DeWitt.” Spinrad believes the Riverside Park setting is ideal for the art fair, with its location in the center of downtown. There’s also a tie-in with the garden club, which fills planter boxes on the bridge and maintains a garden at the park’s gazebo. “What better way to promote the DeWitt community?” Spinrad said. The fair has about a dozen artists signed up so far, but Spinrad said she is fielding calls daily from others interested in participating.

“We would like to have as many (exhibitors) as we can, both for the artists and for our visitors,” she said. A $15 entry fee covers a 10x12-foot space, while a 20x12 space can be had for $25. “We will not turn anyone away, even if they come that day,” Spinrad said. Visitors to the fair will be able to select from – among other items – wind chimes, walking stones for the garden and other outdoor art, photography, glass and jewelry. Exhibitors include DeWitt teacher Bob Jaruzel, who will have original acrylic and watercolor paintings. Spinrad said student artists would also be welcome to exhibit their works for sale, and would not be charged an entry fee. “Whatever we can do to help promote their inner strengths, that’s what we want to do,” she said. Concessions and restrooms will be on-site throughout the day. To sign up, go online for an entry form to www.dewittareacc.org or call Spinrad at (517) 668-3635. “We want to encourage local artists to participate. It’s a great way to encourage the kids of today to recognize the importance of creativity,” she said. “We’re excited about it, and we hope the community will be excited about it.”

DeWitt Garden Walk to take place on July 11 By DAWN PARKER dlparker@lsj.com

DEWITT — The first one worked out so well, they decided to do it again. The DeWitt Millennium Garden Club will hold its second annual Midsummer Blooms Garden Walk from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 11. Gardens at six area private homes will be on display, with a variety of landscaping styles represented. The club’s inaugural garden tour in 2009 had around 500 visitors, and garden club members are hoping to see at least that many this year. Tickets are $6 per person in advance and $8 at Riverside Park on the day of the tour. Proceeds will help fund the construction of a healing labyrinth near the DeWitt Cemetery. The club is ready to request bids for the project, garden club member Kathi Dominguez said. The plans for the labyrinth were executed by a group of third-year landscape design students at Michigan State University as a class project. Visitors to the healing garden during the walk will be able to see the plans on display. The club is planning to build the labyrinth in three phases – a walkway,

the labyrinth itself and then a berm. “As we raise money, we will continue with the plan until it is completed,” Dominguez said. “We know after this summer we will have enough money to get started, and we are very excited. This is a project that has been coming along for many years.” Attracting visitors to the Garden Walk is one way the club has of raising funds, and the tour offers vistas of many lovely plants and flowers. The garden at the home of Greg and Nui Forbis, 206 W. Dill Drive on the Looking Glass River, includes a series of cascading waterfalls and landscaped pockets of flowers flowing down to a fish pond. “It’s very simple and very serene,” Dominguez said. The woodland garden at the home of Morris and Dawn Pysarchik, 508 E. Geneva Drive, features a meandering path down to the water, enhancements by garden designer Dan Crow and a glass piece by noted artist Craig Mitchell Smith. “It’s a small garden, but it’s very well done,” Dominguez said. The eclectic country garden of David and Marilee Powell, 1208 Lucerne Drive

in the Geneva Shores subdivision, shows off raised beds, sunny and shady areas and gardens surrounding a pool. “It’s a beautiful place to entertain, and very welcoming,” Dominguez said. The country cottage garden of Cecil and Jackie Marr, 3223 W. Clark Road, surrounds their home on two levels. Jackie Marr, an artist, likes to incorporate paintings or artistic items in the design of the garden, and has also given a second life to several pieces of vintage wicker furniture. “She has an eye for creativity and humor. She sets up the unexpected,” Dominguez said. The woodland garden of Jim and Patti Sebrell, 12575 Airport Road, has several distinct area separated by meandering pathways. There’s a brook, a pond and a waterfall, with flowers throughout. A little further away, but well worth the drive, is the home of Dale and Karen Daily, 2707 E. Howe Road. The extensive gardens on their property feature not only a variety of plants, but statuary both whimsical and serious by artist Paul Nils-

On the day of the tour, public restrooms will be available at the DeWitt

Sports Park and at Riverside Park. Visitors are asked not to bring pets or strollers or smoke in the private gardens on the walk. Tickets are available in DeWitt at DeWitt Pharmacy,

Bath Twp. Police officers arrest suspected thieves By KEN PALMER kpalmer@lsj.com

BATH TWP. — Four people have been arrested in a lengthy crime spree that included break-ins at a local federal government research station, Haslett High School and several area businesses. Two Cadillac men, 19 and 17, have been arraigned on charges that include safebreaking and breaking and entering, township police said. A Haslett man, 49, was lodged in the Ingham County Jail in one of the cases and could face more charges, police said. A Bath Township juvenile, 16, also faces charges in juvenile court. Police said they planned to interview a fifth suspect in the Cadillac area. The arrests stemmed from an investigation that began when township police were dispatched to a break-in at VanAtta’s Greenhouse on Jan. 30. Numerous items were stolen, including a safe containing cash, township Detective Gary Smith said. Officer Tom Miller, the township’s crime scene investigator, collected unspecified forensic evidence and sent it to the state police crime lab for analysis. The crime lab identified a suspect and forwarded the information to township police in May. Smith located the suspect in Cadillac and began conducting interviews that yielded more and more suspects. As of June 28, leads were coming in on almost a daily ba-

sis, Smith said. “This case is a classic example of how identifying at least one person for a crime can lead to information in multiple crimes with multiple suspects in multiple jurisdictions across the state,” he said. Caleb J. Pitts Jr., 19, and Nickolas Perrin, 17, both of Cadillac, were lodged in the Clinton County Jail on charges that include safebreaking, a maximum life felony, Smith said. So far, the investigation has yielded information about a dozen crimes in three counties dating as far back as last summer, Smith said. Charges have not been brought in all of those cases, he said. The crimes included break-ins at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Plant Soils Research Center in Bath Township on Oct. 15 and Nov. 25, 2009, and another in the summer of 2009. Smith said. A safe was stolen in the Nov. 25 incident, police said. Police also developed information about break-ins at the Meridian Township transfer station, Haslett High School, a smoke shop in East Lansing and a convenience store at M-52 and Haslett Road in Ingham County. The list also includes a March 22 home invasion in Bath Township and various crimes that occurred in the Cadillac area, they said. Smith said his department routinely assigns its detective and crime scene investigator to all serious felony cases, including property crimes such as burglary and illegal entry. That practice and advances in forensic science have resulted in more solved cases over the past few years, he said.

“We’re using the best cutting-edge tools that we can afford, and it’s working,” Smith said.

Unsecured load

A township officer found himself in the line of fire while trying to stop a truck spewing junk on I-69. As he caught up to the truck in the eastbound lanes of the freeway, items were still spilling from the trailer, and a piece of aluminum struck the patrol car, the officer said. A small piece of fabric covered a small portion of the loaded trailer, the officer reported. The driver was cited for having an expired plate and hauling an unsecured load.

Domestic assault

A 20-year-old woman was arrested for domestic assault after biting her boyfriend during a fight on June 25, police reports said. The officer was patrolling the Club Apartment complex when a security guard waved for him to help. The woman, of Washington Township, admitted striking her boyfriend and biting his arm during a heated argument, the reports said. Both combatants had been drinking, and the man was cited for being a minor in possession of alcohol.

Local attorney’s death stunning

By KEVIN GRASHA kgrasha@lsj.com

BATH TOWNSHIP — Scott Goldstein likely would not have been sent to prison after being convicted this month of defrauding an investor in an equipment leasing business out of more than $22,000. So when Goldstein’s attorney, Joseph Niskar, heard that the 43-year-old Bath Township resident had committed suicide, he was stunned. Goldstein, an East Lansing attorney who court documents say had been practicing since 1993, faced the loss of his law license because of the felony conviction. His license was suspended the day of the June 18 verdict, records show. Still, Niskar said, “we were gearing

up for motions for a new trial, and I had some discussions with him about gearing up for the appeal.” On Thursday, June 24 a day after those discussions, Bath Township police responded to Goldstein’s Kernwood Drive home and found him dead. The cause of death has not been released. It was a suicide, according to several people who knew him. A jury in Ingham County Circuit Court convicted Goldstein of false pretenses involving more than $20,000. The jury found Goldstein solicited $25,000 from an investor, Troy McHenry of Delhi Township, to supposedly help form a business that would lease equipment, including a drilling machine. That business never acquired any equipment, and Goldstein withdrew more than $22,000 from the business bank

account, which contained only McHenry’s investment. The felony is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, but the state uses a formula to calculate prison term length, and Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III said Goldstein probably would have been sentenced to probation in addition to paying restitution. “My understanding is there were a lot of things going wrong with his life other than (the conviction),” Dunnings said. Records show that in 2007, Goldstein filed for bankruptcy. A water and sewer system construction business he owned, Goldstein Enterprises LLC, also filed for bankruptcy that year. Seven lawsuits against Goldstein Enterprises are pending in Ingham County Circuit Court, awaiting the outcome of the bankruptcy, records show.

Inspired by learning

When we think about our future, we see everyday pleasures like vacations and the good health needed to enjoy them. So when we created our vision, we were inspired to set our sights high: to be recognized as a national leader in quality and patient care. To get there, we’ve made bold changes at Sparrow Clinton Hospital like updating our facilities to provide an even better experience for patients. We also joined forces with Thoracic and Cardiovascular Institute (TCI), to bring leading heart research, experts and technology to St. Johns. And that’s just the beginning.

Author’s second mystery novel is a thriller Linda Castillo does not disappoint with her second mystery set in Ohio Amish country. In “Pray For Silence”, Painter’s Mill Police Chief Kate Burkholder is back investigating the slaughter of an entire Amish family. Kate is baffled by the senseless killing of seven members of the Plank family. There doesn’t seem to be a motive, and there is no clear evidence to point Kate in any one direction. The Planks have only been

in the community for a year, re-locating from Pennsylvania, and kept to themselves as most Plain people do. What Kate finds most disturbing is the torture of the two teenage Plank sisters. During the initial investigation it looks as though the

father, Amos Plank, brutally murdered his wife and children, then committed suicide. However, as test results trickle in, Kate realizes that something just doesn’t fit. She calls on her friend and State Agent, John Tomasetti. Together they re-visit the crime scene and Kate locates the diary of 15-year-old Mary Plank. The diary’s content leads Kate to believe the teen was leading a double life, and planned to leave her Amish family. Mary nev-

er mentions a name, so it’s up to Kate, her staff and John to piece together the final months of Mary’s life, hoping this leads them in the right direction. Kate locates the Bishop for the Plank family, and he in turn talks to the Bishop in Pennsylvania, and finds that here was also a son Aaron, who was shunned. Kate likes him for the murders when she finds he has a police record for violent behavior. But Aaron has an

alibi and Kate and John continue to seek answers where there are none. Kate talks to neighboring farmers and stumbles upon a youngster that may have been a witness to the murders. The mentally disabled son of a bordering farmer has discovered girls. He sneaks out and looks in windows, and was at the Plank farm the night of the murders. Kate calls for a sketch artist, but because of his problems, Billy cannot de-

scribe the killer. Kate places the boy in a safe house and tells the media that she has new information, and sets herself up. John has left town but races against time and his own inner demons to be there for Kate. Castillo meshes the Amish traditions with the English ways in her new thriller that is sure to please. Holiday fireworks are not enjoyable for most pets Most cats, and for that matter many dogs, are terrified of fireworks! It is for this reason they detest 4th of July celebratory enthusiastic endeavors. They are totally freaked out by the explosions occurring throughout the day in their very own neighborhood. You may be one of many caregivers asking, “What

can I do to calm my pet’s fears?” The following are suggestions that may help make the entire day much

less traumatic for both your pet and yourself. Try keeping your pet in an interior room or in the basement. A room without windows is ideal. Don’t worry about keeping a light on. With an animal’s special eye structure, they see much better in the dark than we do. Anything in the room such as carpet

or some furniture that will muffle the sound also helps. Would your pet do better with a mild sedative? When administering any sedative the key to having it work is giving it well in advance of the anticipated event. The reason is quite simple. Pets will override the effects of the sedative if they are stimulated immediately after the medication is given. Once it is allowed to take effect and calm the recipient, additional stimulation will have a diminished effect. Acepromazine a.k.a. Ace is a drug that has worked well for decades for just such events. Hence, when considering its use for the 4th of July, for it to have its full calming effect, it should be given sometime in the early afternoon, be-

fore people start lighting off those noisy firecrackers. Pets remain comfortable for eight to 12 hours after having taken a dose of Ace. The dose is quite variable. Some respond well to as little as one fourth of a milligram per pound. However, it is safe to give up to three times this dose! Just to let you know, an important side effect of acepromazine is that it causes dilation of the blood vessels in the legs and paws, much the same as when we drink alcohol. This makes it very difficult for a pet to maintain their body temperature. It is for this reason that I do not recommend it be given to pets needing a mild sedative to handle fireworks bringing in the New Year or for those who need to

take the edge off while they traveling during winter months. If “Barney” climbs the walls when a firecracker explodes or “Dora” crawls deeper into the closet, rest assured in most instances something can be done to keep them from totally freaking out. If all else fails hold your pet and console them. Obviously, this isn’t going to do either of you any good if you “jump” every time you hear a “bang”. For more information about this and other pet health concerns, contact an expert - your veterinarian. Dr. Stephen R. DeWitt board approves 2010-2011 budget ing school year. District revenue for 2010-11 is anticipated to be $23.1 million or an increase of $270,000 from last year due to additional students. While revenues are up, they do not cover increased expenses for insurance and wages and general material costs. The district was compelled to implement cuts of approximately $1.5 million in order to balance next year’s budget. These cuts included changing insurance companies for administrators, support personnel and non affiliated workers; concessions of a co-pay in insurance premiums and a lower cost plan by teachers; staff reductions; retirements; increase in athletic fees; increase in secondary lab sizes; energy savings; reductions in the maintenance department by consolidating with St. Johns Public Schools; and other budget reductions. DeWitt superintendent Tina Templin said the good news in the budget picture is the restoration of the previously proposed cut to secondary morning busing as well as reading intervention support at Schavey Road Elementary and

busing for students going to and from athletic events. “These were cuts we absolultely did not want to make and knew were going to be hard for our students and their families. We are relieved that due to higher than expected sales tax revenues, the cuts to schools by the state look like they are not going to be as deep as previously expected,” Templin said. “The approved budget will provide for the continuation of most programs and services our community our community expects with approximately $400,000 going back into our savings account (fund equity.) “Much of the district’s ability to balance the 2010-11 budget was made possible with employee concessions,” Templin added.. “The teachers, support personnel, administrators and non-affiliated staff; all made concessions in order to help the district to reduce expenses for the coming year.” Barring any further cuts from the state, the district is on solid financial footing the the upcoming school year. — From DeWitt Public Schools

DeWitt-Bath Review

DEWITT — The DeWitt Public Schools Board of Education approved a $22.7 million budget for the 2010-11 school year at their June 14 meeting. School districts across the state are required to approve budgets by June 30 each year. This is a tremendous challenge for schools since they do not know for sure how many students they will have by September and also how much the State of Michigan will provide in a grant for each student from the School Aid Fund, which is the major source of district revenues. The district based its budget on a presumption of a per pupil foundation grant of $7,151 from the State of Michigan. This grant allocation represents a conservative approach to budgeting due to the reduction of $165 per pupil or $495,000 cut by the state last year from the district revenues. District leaders are hopeful that, despite uncertainties with the potential actions of the Michigan Legislature, allocations to schools will not be further reduced. To help offset increased costs, the district was able to fill 50 schools of choice openings for the upcom-

• Gently stretch the cramped muscle and hold for about 20 seconds; and • If symptoms persist or worsen, seek emergency medical treatment The more serious stage of heat-related illness is heat exhaustion, which typically occurs when people exercise heavily or work in a warm, humid place that causes sweating. This fluid loss can cause reduced blood flow to vital organs resulting in shock. Signs of exhaustion include headache, moist and pale skin, nausea, dizziness, weakness and exhaustion. Follow these tips for exhaustion: • Seek shade or a cool, comfortable place; • Drink a half glass of cool water every 15 minutes; • Remove or loosen any tight clothing; • Apply a cool, wet towel or compress; and • If symptoms persist or worsen, seek emergency medical treatment. Finally, heat stroke is the most severe stage of heat-related illness. A heat stroke, or also called sunstroke, is life threatening and immediate emergency medical attention is vital. During a heat stroke, the body’s temperature control stops working and temperature can rise very quickly. Seek emergency treatment immediately if the following

symptoms are present: • Vomiting; • Decreased alertness level or complete loss of consciousness; • High body temperature (sometimes as high as 105 degrees Fahrenheit); • Red, hot and dry skin; • Rapid, weak pulse; and • Rapid, shallow breathing. Another important concern during the summer months is skin cancer, or melanoma. Although this is present year round, risks increase during summer months. You can reduce your chances of skin cancer by using sunscreen, wearing sunglasses and wearing appropriate clothing that covers the body. Though it is extremely serious and can be life threatening, most heat-related illnesses are preventable. So when engaging in your summer activities remember it is always important to consult a physician about any concerns that you may have and remember these simple tips to lead a happier, healthier lifestyle. For more information and tips on sun safety and the effects of sun exposure, please speak with your doctor or visit our web site at www.michigan.gov/mdch. — From the Michigan Department of Community Health

LANSING — Now that the summer has officially arrived, the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) has tips to keep residents safe this summer when the heat reaches 80 degrees or above. Major heat can create stress on your body and mind. Very hot days, with temperatures in the upper 80s and above, can cause body temperature to rise, resulting in muscle cramps, dizziness and eventually making you dangerously ill. To prevent symptoms of heat stress, adults and children should stay completely hydrated by drinking water frequently, even when you may not be thirsty. Try to stay clear of alcoholic and caffeinated drinks as they cause dehydration. The sun’s rays can be very dangerous especially from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., so try to plan daily activities accordingly. If you must do work outdoors, take frequent breaks in shaded, cool areas. Wearing light colored, loose fitting clothing will help you stay cool during the hot summer days. Fabrics like

cotton are a good choice as they allow air to circulate through clothing and to your body. It is important to know the different signs of heat-related illnesses. Heat-related illness target young children and the elderly, so it is important to monitor these citizens by checking them frequently. The first stage of heat-related illness is dehydration, which occurs when body fluids are lost by sweating and not replaced. Dry mouth, thirst, headache, dizziness, cramps, excessive fatigue and irritability are all symptoms of dehydration. When experiencing dehydration, follow these tips: • Move to a shaded or air-conditioned area; • Replace fluids by drinking water; and • Consult a physician if symptoms persist or if there is an existing condition that could be complicated by increased fluid intake. Heat cramps are another indication of a potential heat-related emergency. Heat cramps are muscular pains and spasms caused by heavy exertion and high body temperatures. To treat heat cramps, follow these tips: • Seek shade or cool, comfortable place; • Drink a half glass of cool water every 15 minutes;

Four Panthers play in softball All-Star game By BILL McLEOD bmcleod@lsj.com

EAST LANSING — DeWitt softball was well represented at the annual Mid-Michigan High School Softball All-Star game at Ranney Park June 28. Representing the Panthers were Chelsea Bozzo, Carolyn Vilona, Betsy Moody and Emily Mollitor. DeWitt coach Mike Church coached the West All Stars. The East All-Stars team came out on top 4-3. “It was a lot of fun, it’s what those games are supposed to be,” said Church, who was coaching in the All-Star game for his third straight year. “The games are serious all year long, so it’s nice to get a break and get to know some of the girls from the other schools.”

The West team looked to take the lead in the ninth inning with the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on second, but a called third strike on an Olivet batter ended the game without West scoring. “The people got to see a good game, so that part was good,” he said. Church had the opportunity to coach Olivet’s Chelsea Sundberg, the top pitcher in the state. Sundberg pitched four shutout innings. “I see why she’s Miss Michigan Softball (Pitcher), she’s the real deal,” Church said. “She’s night and day the best one I’ve seen all season. She’s a dominant player and will do well in college.” Sundberg will play for Central Michigan University.

Bath’s Cooper plays in softball All-Star game By BILL McLEOD bmcleod@lsj.com

EAST LANSING — Bath’s Bobby Cooper, the only senior on the Bee softball team, was selected to play in the annual MidMichigan High School Softball All-Star game at Ranney Park June 28. Cooper played outfield for the East team.

The East team beat West 4-3. Bath coach Mark Kibby was in the stands to watch Cooper play. “I was proud of her, she represented Bath well,” Kibby said. Cooper went 1-for-2 at the plate. Kibby said Cooper would have been 2-for-2 had it not been for a good defen-

sive play by the West team. Cooper was also the only CMAC player in the game. Her teammates come from Eaton Rapids, Williamston, Grand Ledge and other area schools. On the West team were players from DeWitt, Olivet, Okemos and Mason. In the other game of the tournament, the South team defeated the North 7-4.

Dalman gave all as DeWitt athlete, coach DEWITT — Every athlete has heard some variation of the phrase, “Give 100 percent effort and good things will happen.” It is a sports cliché, but it certainly rings true in the career of our final member of DeWitt High School Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Class of 2010. Sam Dalman, a 1983 graduate of DeWitt, earned 10 varsity letters in four different sports and was selected as DeWitt’s Male Athlete of the Year. If one takes a trip down the long hallway at the high school and spends some time admiring

the packed trophy cases, there is a common denominator; Dalman’s role, either as a player or a coach, helped lead to numerous championships. A three-time varsity letter-winner in cross country at DeWitt, Dalman helped the Panthers capture a Class C regional championship en route to a seventh place finish in the state his sophomore year. Dalman job of keeping our guys in line,” said DHS cross country coach Barry Kloenhamer. The Panthers won the Capital Circuit championship his junior year and finished fifth in the state. Dalman’s love of basketball led him to give up possibly his best sport (wrestling) in the winters to focus on the hardwood. DeWitt fans will remember him most for his non-stop energy and competitive spirit that more than made up for his small stature. Standing just over 5 feet and weighing less than 120 pounds, he still had the ability to dominate a basketball

game with his quickness. As a freshman, Dalman was pulled up from the junior varsity late in the season when several members of the varsity team were suspended and helped the Panthers to win two games in the districts before falling to Lansing Catholic Central in the finals. The following year, after a 15-5 regular season on the junior varsity, Dalman (chosen as the team’s Most Valuable Player) was pulled up again to the varsity at the end of his sophomore season and helped the Panthers to a Class C district championship in 1981, DeWitt’s first in boys basketball in 13 years. As a junior, Dalman averaged 14 points, six assists and five steals per game for Coach John Blumberg. He was named Second Team All-League and selected as a member of the AllClinton County Team. As a senior co-captain under first-year coach D.J. Lincoln, Dalman guided the Panthers to a 20-4 record overall. DeWitt tied Okemos for first place in the Capital Circuit (although the Panthers won both head-to-head match-ups) and a Class C district championship be-

DeSira named Athlete of the Year By DICK HOEKSTRA

For the Lansing State Journal

DEWITT — Tori DeSira of DeWitt swept Division 2 state, regional, league and Greater Lansing Honor Roll Track and Field Meet titles in both the 100 and 300 hurdles as a freshman a year ago. Since she came up short of repeating as a state champion earlier this month when she finished third in the 100 hurdles and fourth in the 300 hurdles, it might seem like she didn’t have as good of a season as a sophomore. A closer look reveals that DeSira’s times this year - which still earned her all-state status in both events - were both faster than the ones she won with a year ago, earning her the Lansing State Journal’s Girls Prep Track and Field Athlete of the Year award. In 2009, she won the Division 2 state meet with a time of 15.22 sec-

onds in the 100 hurdles and a 45.18 in the 300 hurdles. This year, on the same track in Zeeland, she placed third in the 100 hurdles with a 14.6 and fourth in the 300 hurdles with a career-best 44.9. And she successfully repeated as champion of both events at the regional, CAAC Gold and Honor Roll meets. In fact, both of her hurdles times in the CAAC Gold and Greater Lansing Honor Roll Meet times and her 100 hurdles time at regionals were also faster than a year ago. She also reached the semifinals of the 200 dash in the Division 2 state meet, and anchored DeWitt’s 11thplace 800 relay which also included Takira Moore, De’Anna Majors and Jessica D’Haene. The 800-meter relay team also were named to the Dream Team. “I was hoping to win and keep the titles,” DeSira said. “In the 300 (at the

state meet), I was disappointed that I let one of the girls pass me at the end, but I was tired after a long day with a lot of nerves.” Yet, she still managed a career-best time of 44.9. “I improved my times in the events,” she said, “So I’m still happy with that. I was pretty satisfied just to be up there. “But I plan to work harder next year to try to get (back to) first place.” Besides increased competition, running more injury free may have helped DeSira improve on her times from a year ago. “I had shin splints halfway through the season, and foot surgery going into summer where I had some bunions removed,” she said. “I don’t have any pain. So I think I got a lot quicker. Hopefully I can drop times some more next year.” Moore also earned Division 2 AllArea honors in the 100-meter dash.

but lost in the regional finals. Many of those players would return the following year aiming for the ultimate prize, the 1983 Class C state championship. Dalman was selected Second Team All-League as a senior, playing a key role for a team that blasted its way through the Capital Circuit with a perfect 10-0 record. The Panthers capped off a fantastic season, finishing 28-7 overall after a 5-1 victory over Lake Fenton gave DeWitt its first ever state championship in baseball. As an assistant coach for both the boys and girls varsity basketball teams, Dalman was a motivator for many DeWitt athletes. His primary role as an assistant was to lead the “Gold team” in practice against the starters, and he brought an intensity level to scrimmage situations that might otherwise be lacking. “He drove us to be our best as he was a fierce competitor,” said 1996 graduate Jason Kreider. “If you were not at your best it would show, because Sammy had a knack for making you look silly out there.” Christy Drayton, a four-year varsity player for the girls team added, “Sam would not allow you to give less than 100 percent. He just has a presence out on the court. As a player, when you see him volunteering his time to get the most out of you, it just makes you work that much harder so you don’t let him down.” Dalman’s willingness to stay after prac-

tice was an asset to the program as well. Kreider recalled, “If I wasn’t on my game, he’d make sure he would get me to take some extra shots with him after practice.” As a “volunteer” coach, that says a lot about his commitment to go above and beyond to help the program. As an assistant coach, Dalman was a part of four Class B Final Four tournament runs, two by the boys in 1994-1995 and 1995-1996 and two by the girls in 1999 and 2000. Combining his efforts in both the boys and girls programs, he was part of eight league championships, 10 district championships, and five regional championships. He assisted on six straight Ingham County League championship teams in girls basketball from 1997 to 2002 before stepping away from coaching to focus more on his increasing military responsibilities after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Although he had opportunities in 1983 to continue his basketball career in college, Dalman enlisted in the military in August the summer that he graduated from DeWitt. He served in the Michigan Army National Guard for the next 26 years, ultimately promoted to the rank of colonel until his retirement in February of 2010. He is now working as a realtor for Century 21 Home Towne Realty in Lansing. Dalman currently resides in Lansing with his wife Julie and three children, Max (18), Macy (16) and Ben (6). — From the DHS Athletic Hall of Fame committee

DEWITT — Three years ago, when Dave Koenigsknecht took over as DeWitt golf coach, he said that he was fortunate to inherit a talented crop of incoming freshmen. “I knew if they continued to improve, we’d have a shot to win something,” he said. “That freshmen group that year, now juniors, eight to 10 of them were pretty good.” This season, that core group of juniors led DeWitt to the first boys golf state championship in school history. Koenigsknecht’s leadership of the Panther team earned him the Lansing State Journal’s Prep Golf Coach of the Year honors. The Panthers shot a team score of 307, 10 strokes better than CAAC Gold rival and second-place finisher Haslett. DeWitt’s score was all the more impressive considering their top finisher, junior Ryan Carey finished seven shots back of the medalist Joey Garber of Petoskey. The Panthers’ depth won out. “I usually carry 10 kids,” Koenigsknecht said. “We’re lucky enough to

have a very competitive group.” Koenigsknecht said that he would hold challenge matches in practice to determine the starting lineup for upcoming competitions. “I think that really helps prepare the kids,” he said. “They’re playing under pressure in practices a lot. “We had some pretty good players that would be playing a lot for a lot of other schools,” Koenigsknecht said. Junior Alex Jones said that the heightened level of competition at practice was key to the team’s success. “I feel like, personally, it helps us mentally,” Jones said. “You’re playing for your spot. If you don’t get it done, you’re not playing. “It simulates a lot what a real match is like,” Jones said. The DeWitt coach said that a state title was a serious goal for the team at the beginning of the year. “We saw Haslett finish second last year,” Koenigsknecht said. “They had mostly seniors (this season) and we had mostly juniors. Through the year as we traded wins with Haslett, we knew it could be either one of us if we played well.” Fittingly, the state title

came down to DeWitt and the Vikings, who were tied heading into the final round. Koenigsknecht said his players were composed heading into the last day. “They seemed pretty calm, pretty confident,” he said. “I told them to try to relax, play like your capable of. If things don’t go well, try and forget it.” Now with a state title in their possession and the core of the team returning for their senior seasons, expectations are high for 2011. “I think we have the confidence that we’ve done it,” Koenigsknecht said. “That can do a lot for the mental side of your game. We have a few other good players on their heels.” Jones was also named to the Dream Team. Carey and David DeKorte, two of the DeWitt juniors, earned Division 2 All-Area selections. DeWitt sophomore Tyler Polulak also received All-Area honors. Jones, Carey, Polulak and DeKorte were named to the All-League team for the CAAC Gold Division. Brendan Ward and Stephen Smith earned All-League honorable mentions.

mound for the North team. He scattered three hits and allowed two runs while striking out two. Lakewood’s Brian Satterly was 1-for-1 with a triple and Miguel Mendez was 1-for-3 with an RBI in the North victory. Victor Barron of Fowlerville had two hits and two RBI for the South team. “To be able to come together and play with some of the best players in the

state is a great experience for all of us,” Holt’s Carlos Berroa said. “Every one of us can take something from playing with each other in a game like this.” In the East/West game, the East team won 7-6. Dansville’s Wesley Mays was the winning pitcher. Williamston’s Mike Harbert was 3-for-3 in the victory for the East team and was named the MVP of the game.

LANSING — DeWitt baseball standouts Connor Hunt and Ricky Lowe shined in the 36th Annual High School Senior All-Star Game at Kircher/Municipal field June 23. Playing for the North team, Hunt and Lowe were instrumental in the 8-6 win over the South team. Lowe pitched two per-

fect innings and Hunt went 1-for-2 with a double. Hunt made several crowd-pleasing plays at third base, helping him earn the game’s MVP award. “It had been three weeks since I last played, so I just went in and tried to act natural and do what I normally do,” Hunt said. “To play here with these guys is a big honor for me.” Waverly’s Ben Saylor picked up the win on the
